Playful puppies and cuddly kittens are usually the first ones to be adopted in shelters, but what about senior pets? The sad truth is in most facilities, senior pets are the last to be adopted, if they're adopted at all. The ASPCA reports that senior dogs have a 25% adoption rate, compared to the 60% adoption rate of younger dogs and puppies and the stats for cats are even worse. In this episode, host Amy Castro explores the world of senior dog rescue and adoption with Sherri Franklin, president and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco. Muttville was the first senior dog rescue in the US and has saved the lives of almost 11,000 senior dogs since it began in 2007. In this episode, Amy and Sherri discuss:Why so many senior dogs end up in sheltersWhy people hesitate to adopt senior dogsThe benefits of adopting a seniorThe important role fosters play in getting dogs adoptedHospice adoption and the rewards for both dog and adopterAnd more!Shoutouts in this episode:Muttville Senior Dog RescueFamily Animal Hospital of FriendswoodStarlight Outreach and Rescue#petadoption #adoptdontshop #dogbreeder #pets #petstagram #petsofinstagram #petsagram #instapets #petshop #pets_of_instagram #cutepets #petscorner #petsofig #picpets #worldofcutepets #pets_perfection #lovepets #exoticpets #petsofinsta #petsgram #delight_pets #friendlypets #showcasing_pets #inspiredbypets #pets_of_our_world #rescuepetsofinstagram #mypets #petsarefamily s #petslover #petnutrition #podcast #petpodcaster #petcare #petfriendly #petlovers #petwellness #seniordog #seniordogs #seniorpetsKeep this podcast coming to you each week and bringing you GREAT content so you can be the best pet parent ever! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/starlightpettalkGET YOUR STARLIGHT PET TALK MERCHANDISE HERE! www.starlightoutreachandrescue.org/store FOLLOW STARLIGHT PET TALK ▷ Official Site: https://www.starlighpettalk.com ▶ Facebook: / starlightoutreachandrescue ▶ YouTube: -https://bit.ly/starlightsubscribe ▶ TikTok: ...

Sherri Franklin is the founder of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. She was named a CNN Hero in 2016, which emphasizes the impact she's had on the lives of senior animals and her community overall. She joins us today to talk about her mission to help aging animals. Sherri explains how Muttville began, why she ultimately decided to do something about the animal shelter conditions she'd witnessed, and how she continues to sustain a growing Muttville all these years later. I also ask Sherri an important question, one I feel she's best qualified to answer: How do we know when it is the right time to say goodbye to our beloved? In this episode, you'll hear how beautiful it can be to care so much. You'll hear about the ultimate goals for Muttville and why the mayor of San Francisco has officially declared a Muttville Senior Rescue Dog day across the city. You'll hear how among the ones who need it most - the precious oldies - there are those on the fighting line making a real difference. And you'll eagerly want to be part of it. There is a reason Sherri Franklin, the founder of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, was named a CNN Hero. She saw how often senior dogs were euthanized because they were older or became a bother or had health issues. You must learn of her great work and the value in rescuing a senior. After spending a year in an orphanage, she was adopted by a couple in Mumbai and brought to San Jose, California. In Mumbai, Meena would watch over a litter of puppies at her home. When she came to the United States, almost every weekend included a trip to the Humane Society or to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. Muttville is a cage-free dog rescue that gives senior dogs a "second chance at life," according to their website. The organization was founded by 2016 CNN Hero Sherri Franklin and rescues about 1,000 dogs per year and runs mostly with the help of volunteers. Meena first heard of the rescue from a neighbor whose dog had been adopted from Muttville. The neighbor shared stories of how senior dogs are often left behind in shelters. With tender love and care, those dogs can make great companions. "More people should adopt senior dogs," says Meena. "They give you the same unconditional love as any other dog." Meena understood what it felt like to be left behind, and wanted to help the senior dogs find the loving homes they deserve, just like she did. The problem was, Meena had to be 17-years-old to volunteer at Muttville, and she was only 12. She wanted to find a way to support Muttville and came up with an idea. She advertised on Nextdoor offering pet sitting and Pet Fairy Services was born. Meena began pet sitting in her own home for her neighbors and school friends with the goal of supporting Muttville. "You are never too young to start a business," says Meena. With rates of $35 per day and several years of hard work, Meena has managed to raise $7,000 for Muttville. That number doubled to $14,000, thanks to a matching donation program with Intel, where her father works. The Intel Volunteer Matching Grant Program encourages employees to donate time, money or labor to nonprofits that give back to their communities, according to Intel's website.

While during this festive time of the year many of us are taking the time to be with our loved ones and think about all the things we are grateful for, for some, the holidays can be an especially challenging time of year. Most people know about the big national projects such as the SPCA and Best Friends etc., but there are a lot of great causes to consider right here in San Francisco. So, with that in mind, this week on Escrow Out Loud, our San Francisco Real Estate podcast, we go through just a few of the local charities that we love and have worked with in the past.We start things off with mentioning some great San Francisco based dog rescues. As dog lovers, both Matt and Britton have adopted their current pets from Rocket Dog Rescue, but Muttville Senior Dog Rescue is another great group which rescues older dogs and dogs usually deemed unadoptable and finds them good homes. Some non-animal-related charities and groups we love include, Meritus College Fund, which does great work with students providing mentorships for high school students and four-year college scholarships, Project Open Hand deliver meals to elderly and low income or ill people who are homebound. Matt shares a story about doing a Project Open Hand delivery route and what an eye-opening experience it was that really brought home the realities of the poverty gap that exists in San Francisco.Another great group is The Welcome Home Project – a San Francisco Association of Realtors project – which helps people who were formerly homeless to set up their new homes with all the necessities they need. Currently, they are doing a big project for formerly homeless veterans. Finally, we would like to mention the Rebuilding Together group which helps people with lower incomes fix and clean up their homes to make them more liveable.People often have a hard time asking for help but the human connection is an invaluable gift. So if you have been looking for a great cause to give your time or your money to, these are just some of the many very worthy organizations in San Francisco to consider. Sherri Franklin, Founder and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, shares her journey in animal rescue at the Rescue Think Tank as she celebrates Muttville’s Tenth Anniversary. Sherri Franklin, a long-time animal advocate and shelter volunteer, founded Muttville in 2007 to save the lives of the older dogs that were considered “unadoptable” and routinely euthanized in area shelters. Working from her house, she saved 27 dogs that first year. She said she “wanted to make senior dogs sexy,” and in fact, has turned the organization into a Bay Area favorite and a national model. In 2010, Sherri received the Jefferson Award for Public Service, which recognizes those who “inspire others to service.” In 2016, CNN named Sherri a CNN Hero. Sassy Seniors - Celebrating Senior Pets - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)
Host Kelly Jackson takes you on a tour of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue and it's founder, Sherri Franklin. Franklin founded Muttville, based in San Francisco, CA, to help find loving homes for senior pets. Franklin talks to Kelly about Muttville's mission, the organization's big milestone last summer and yes...even an Oprah connection. Then we travel to France a place where author Sherry Long and her pooch, Chula, know all too well. Ever traveled with your pet? How about to another country? Long has written a delightful book called Dog Trots Globe - To Paris and Provence. For the last three years in April, Chula has globe trotted with her family to France. Even though Chula is now 11, the senior dog doesn't let anything get in her way of enjoying the City of Lights. Long talks about pet friendly and not-so-pet friendly parts of the country. Tips for flying to another country with a pet and whether pets can actually be bi-lingual! More details on this episode MP3 Podcast - From Muttville to France on Pet Life Radio
