Playful puppies and cuddly kittens are usually the first ones to be adopted in shelters, but what about senior pets? The sad truth is in most facilities, senior pets are the last to be adopted, if they're adopted at all. The ASPCA reports that senior dogs have a 25% adoption rate, compared to the 60% adoption rate of younger dogs and puppies and the stats for cats are even worse. In this episode, host Amy Castro explores the world of senior dog rescue and adoption with Sherri Franklin, president and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco. Muttville was the first senior dog rescue in the US and has saved the lives of  almost 11,000 senior dogs since it began in 2007. In this episode, Amy and Sherri discuss:Why so many senior dogs end up in sheltersWhy people hesitate to adopt senior dogsThe benefits of adopting a seniorThe important role fosters play in getting dogs adoptedHospice adoption and the rewards for both dog and adopterAnd more!Shoutouts in this episode:Muttville Senior Dog RescueFamily Animal Hospital of FriendswoodStarlight Outreach and Rescue#petadoption #adoptdontshop #dogbreeder #pets #petstagram #petsofinstagram #petsagram #instapets #petshop #pets_of_instagram #cutepets #petscorner #petsofig #picpets #worldofcutepets #pets_perfection #lovepets #exoticpets #petsofinsta #petsgram #delight_pets #friendlypets #showcasing_pets #inspiredbypets #pets_of_our_world #rescuepetsofinstagram #mypets #petsarefamily s #petslover #petnutrition #podcast #petpodcaster #petcare #petfriendly #petlovers #petwellness #seniordog #seniordogs #seniorpetsKeep this podcast coming to you each week and bringing you GREAT content so you can be the best pet parent ever! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/starlightpettalkGET YOUR STARLIGHT PET TALK MERCHANDISE HERE! www.starlightoutreachandrescue.org/store FOLLOW STARLIGHT PET TALK ▷ Official Site: https://www.starlighpettalk.com ▶ Facebook: / starlightoutreachandrescue ▶ YouTube: -https://bit.ly/starlightsubscribe ▶ TikTok: ...

After spending a year in an orphanage, she was adopted by a couple in Mumbai and brought to San Jose, California. In Mumbai, Meena would watch over a litter of puppies at her home. When she came to the United States, almost every weekend included a trip to the Humane Society or to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. Muttville is a cage-free dog rescue that gives senior dogs a "second chance at life," according to their website. The organization was founded by 2016 CNN Hero Sherri Franklin and rescues about 1,000 dogs per year and runs mostly with the help of volunteers. Meena first heard of the rescue from a neighbor whose dog had been adopted from Muttville. The neighbor shared stories of how senior dogs are often left behind in shelters. With tender love and care, those dogs can make great companions. "More people should adopt senior dogs," says Meena. "They give you the same unconditional love as any other dog." Meena understood what it felt like to be left behind, and wanted to help the senior dogs find the loving homes they deserve, just like she did. The problem was, Meena had to be 17-years-old to volunteer at Muttville, and she was only 12. She wanted to find a way to support Muttville and came up with an idea. She advertised on Nextdoor offering pet sitting and Pet Fairy Services was born. Meena began pet sitting in her own home for her neighbors and school friends with the goal of supporting Muttville. "You are never too young to start a business," says Meena. With rates of $35 per day and several years of hard work, Meena has managed to raise $7,000 for Muttville. That number doubled to $14,000, thanks to a matching donation program with Intel, where her father works. The Intel Volunteer Matching Grant Program encourages employees to donate time, money or labor to nonprofits that give back to their communities, according to Intel's website.

This broke Sherri's heart and she decided to start Muttville, a shelter-based in San Francisco that rescues senior dogs and adopts them out to forever homes, oftentimes giving these grateful pups a loving final chapter to their lives. If you're struggling with the expenses of your pet or with keeping your pet, check out this week's show notes for a list of resources. Marie Macaspac offers some terrific marketing and branding tips, along with observations on Muttville's founder Sherri Franklin and how her leadership empowered Marie and others. All part of a larger journey transforming Muttville into one of the premier rescue organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a powerful image synonymous with senior dogs. Marie Macaspac is founder of both Switchblade Creative Studios and Animal Rescue Marketing. She is also Director of Marketing for Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, which started in founder Sherri Franklin's home. Our episode starts when Marie Rochelle Macaspac left behind a corporate marketing job to start her own path. While starting to build her own business, Marie loved that she was able spend most of her days with one of her closest friends - her dog Jazmin - by her side. A year later, Jazmin died. Marie eventually volunteered for Muttville. A major moment occurred in 2008 when the band Gogol Bordello offered to perform a benefit concert for Muttville. Marie's marketing instincts kicked in to help make the concert a success, and led to Marie helping with the growth of Muttville through a variety of marketing and branding strategies. Franklin founded Muttville, based in San Francisco, CA, to help find loving homes for senior pets. Franklin talks to Kelly about Muttville's mission, the organization's big milestone last summer and yes...even an Oprah connection. Then we travel to France a place where author Sherry Long and her pooch, Chula, know all too well. Ever traveled with your pet? How about to another country? Long has written a delightful book called Dog Trots Globe - To Paris and Provence. For the last three years in April, Chula has globe trotted with her family to France. Even though Chula is now 11, the senior dog doesn't let anything get in her way of enjoying the City of Lights. Long talks about pet friendly and not-so-pet friendly parts of the country. Tips for flying to another country with a pet and whether pets can actually be bi-lingual! More details on this episode MP3 Podcast - From Muttville to France on Pet Life Radio
