The no-kill movement promised to revolutionize animal sheltering by saving lives and ending unnecessary euthanasia. But behind the catchy slogans and glowing statistics, a different reality lurks – one that's rarely discussed. In this eye-opening conversation with animal welfare expert Daniel Ettinger, we dig deep into the issues plaguing some shelters striving for that elusive 90% live release rate.As a rescuer myself, I'm experiencing a system overwhelmed by its own ambitions. Shelters don't have a clear understanding of what it means to be no-kill, and communities are not set up to provide all the realities needed to make no-kill work. Instead, shelters are closing their doors when full to avoid euthanasia and maintain high live-release rates, finders are stuck with animals they can't keep, and rescues are buckling under overflow. Even worse, some animals are warehoused for years, leading to questionable quality of life. Daniel shares a more balanced alternative – SMART (Saving More Animals Responsibly Together), an approach that addresses the root causes and focuses on community resources, transparency, and responsible care.We discuss how the relentless pursuit of arbitrary statistics, like the 90% live release rate, has led to dangerous consequences, including the adoption of unsafe animals and public safety issues. We also explore why adopting more pets isn't the solution and how real change starts with accessible veterinary care, housing policy reform, and community education. This episode challenges the black-and-white thinking surrounding animal rescue and offers a fresh perspective on how we can all contribute to more sustainable, humane solutions. Tune in for an honest look at the no-kill movement and discover why we need a smarter approach to animal welfare.Comment on this episode! I broke down in the middle of a hurricane—sobbing, soaked, and desperately trying to keep my barn from blowing away—while sick kittens cried in a barely-secured shed. That's when I realized: something had to change. In this raw, no-holds-barred solo episode, I share the story kept quiet for too long—the mental, emotional, and physical toll of being "the yes person" in animal rescue for far too long. With over 4,000 animals fostered, a 7-acre property turned full-blown sanctuary, and a rescue organization I've poured my soul into, I finally hit my limit. From losing my husband to COVID, to battling cancer while still saving animals, to holding things together through Hurricane Beryl, I've lived the reality behind the glossy social media posts—and it nearly destroyed me.This episode covers:Why saying yes to every animal can mean saying no to the ones you could saveThe emotional damage of euthanasia decisions and the savior complex in rescue cultureThe moment I knew my passion had become a compulsionWhy I'm not leaving rescue, but stepping back to lead with clarityHow I'm building a leaner, foster-based model focused on advocacy and sustainabilityA preview of my upcoming interview on why the no-kill movement is failing—and what ethical, SMART sheltering could look likeIt's time for a new chapter—for me, and for the rescue world—one rooted in balance, boundaries, and better outcomes for everyone.

Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking, but for so many of us, grief is tangled up with guilt. Did I do enough? Was it too soon? Too late? Did I fail them? These thoughts can haunt us, making it even harder to heal.I know this feeling all too well. When I had to make the devastating decision to euthanize our 34-year-old rescue horse, Cherokee, I found myself overwhelmed with guilt—even after decades of experience in animal rescue. If you've ever struggled with these emotions, you're not alone. In this episode of Muddy Paws and Hairballs, I sit down with grief experts Ken Dolan-DelVecchio and Nancy Saxton-Lopez, hosts of The Pet Loss Companion podcast and co-authors of The Pet Loss Companion: Healing Advice from Family Therapists Who Lead Pet Loss Groups. Together, we're diving deep into:
If you think hairballs are just part of life with cats, think again! Frequent hairballs can signal serious health issues like digestive problems, excessive grooming due to stress or allergies, or even conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and pancreatitis. In this episode of Muddy Paws & Hairballs, veterinarian Dr. Linda Atkins breaks down the truth about cat hairballs, why they happen, and how to prevent them.Key Takeaways: ✔️ Healthy cats should have hairballs "seasonally", approximately four hairballs per year—weekly or monthly hairballs are a red flag. ✔️ Excessive grooming is often triggered by stress, food allergies, skin irritation, or parasites. ✔️ Digestive motility issues, like IBD, pancreatitis, or even constipation, can cause hairballs to form instead of passing through. ✔️ Brushing your cat regularly removes loose fur before they swallow it—the #1 way to prevent hairballs! ✔️ Wet cat food and fresh water improve digestive health and help move swallowed fur through the system. ✔️ Long-haired cat breeds (Persians, Maine Coons, Ragdolls) require extra grooming to prevent hairballs and matting. ✔️ Hairball-related coughing? It might not be hairballs at all—feline asthma or heart disease could be the real culprit. ✔️ Training pets early to accept brushing makes future grooming stress-free. ✔️ Thinking of adopting a cat? Know what you're signing up for—long-haired cats need lifelong grooming commitment!Don't Ignore the Signs! Frequent hairballs, vomiting, or excessive grooming are NOT normal cat behavior. If your cat is hacking up hairballs more than a few times a year, consult your veterinarian to rule out underlying health concerns.
