Tom Turcich and his dog, Savannah, completed their world walk in 2022. On this week's episode of Travel Tales, we hear their story. We first talked with Tom and Savannah back in 2021, when they were in Kyrgyzstan, six years into their journey, which began in 2015. They had been held up by the pandemic, which was only one of many ordeals they faced on their circumnavigation. A year and a few thousand miles later, they were done and back home in New Jersey. And now, two years later, Tom has released his memoir, The World Walk: 7 Years. 28,000 Miles. 6 Continents. A Grand Meditation, One Step at a Time. In his Travel Tale, Tom reads an excerpt from the book, a moment set in the Peruvian desert about a year and a half into his journey. At that time, he'd already been held up by knife point and chased by semi-feral dogs in South America. The novelty of his walk had worn off and as he shuffled through the desert, he started to lose sight of why he was attempting this journey. And then he encountered a special restaurant with a special individual, one that revealed that he was indeed on the right path. Tom and host Aislyn Greene also talk about what it was like to return to “real” life after seven years of walking, his relationship to walking now, and where he wants to go next. Founded in 2020 by a group of animal advocates in Lincoln, Nebraska, Brave Animal Rescue is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) volunteer-based animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing homeless kittens, cats, dogs, and puppies. By working with a network of volunteer advocates, foster caregivers, local veterinarians, and shelters, Brave Animal Rescue is able to help hundreds of animals every year by pulling animals from high-kill shelters, by working hands-on rescuing orphaned kittens, by aiding in local Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts, and by helping those who are no longer able to care for their pets. We provide these animals with care and temporary homes until we are able to place them in permanent homes. Brave also aims to serve as a resource to our community by providing information about pet ownership, spaying and neutering, veterinary care, and TNR. The founders of Brave Animal Rescue are life-long animal advocates who have several years of experience working with other nonprofit animal groups throughout the Midwest. Through these experiences on the forefront of rescue, the founders quickly began to recognize a need in the community for a neonatal-focused rescue. The vast majority of animals that are surrendered to animal shelters are under the age of 18 months old. According to The Humane Society of the United States, 80% of kittens are born outside. Without intervention, these kittens go on to procreate, get killed (by disease, vehicles, predators, etc.), or end up in shelters. Unfortunately, kittens and puppies under 8 weeks old are the population most at-risk for being euthanized in shelters due to a lack of resources and foster homes. With a passion for newborn kittens and puppies, and drive to help the community, the founders of Brave Animal Rescue aim to end the cycle of unwanted companion animals through education, rescue, and spaying and neutering. Only one dog fouling fine has been issued in Lahinch in the past three years. The information comes as Green Party Councillor Liam Grant has urged Clare County Council at this month's meeting of the West Clare Municipal District to address the "serious" dog fouling issues in the coastal town. In response, the local authority says it's requested its Dog Warden service provider carry out additional patrols on Clare beaches to combat the issue. Councillor Grant says people must behave responsibly and believe harsher fines would be a step in the right direction.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: I spent a lot of time and money on one dog. Do I need help?, published by tobiasleenaert on December 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is about a personal experience - rescuing a dog on a trip in Mexico - that helped me realize how I wrestle with being effective. My girlfriend and me were recently in Mexico. After speaking at a conference, we took two weeks off in Yucatan. We had both been aware that we'd meet a lot of stray animals. We knew that this situation could potentially spoil our vacation - which was meant as a break from our daily involvement in animal activism (and thus animal suffering). So as well as we could, we avoided getting too close to any animal we saw in the streets. That worked, until it didn't. Near the end of our trip, I ran into a quite unhealthy looking dog who was riddled with ticks. We spent half an hour taking the ticks out and by the time we were done with him, we knew we wouldn't let him lie there. I called a few shelters, asking if they could take the dog in, but they were all full. Contacting local activists, we miraculously found a place nearby where he'd be able to stay indefinitely. We brought him there right away, leaving him in a pen (there were other dogs that needed to get used to him). When we went away, it was with a bad feeling. Later that night, we decided we would pick him up again the next morning (our hotel didn't allow dogs so we had to wait) and would find another place for him. When we went back the next day, we were told that the dog had escaped. We saw where he had bit through the fence, probably in desperation and fear of the barking of the other dogs. We felt devastated, thinking that instead of helping him, we had put his life at risk. There was a very busy road right next to the property, and the place where we had found him - his home turf - was six kilometers away. By now we had bonded with this dog - which we called Tlalok, after the Aztec rain god - and mourned for the rest of the day, as if one of our own dogs had just died. We actually had difficulty understanding why this whole situation affected us so much. Maybe it was because Tlalok was such an incredibly friendly, trusting - and at the same time needy - being. The next day, one day before we'd fly home, we decided we wouldn't give up on him. I made a Spanish "LOST" flyer that we copied in our hotel and then distributed in the village where we'd found him. The flyer promised a reward of 5000 pesos (250 dollars). We spoke to many people online and offline, contacted vets, shelters and activists… At one point that day, a vet we were in touch with sent us the picture of a dog that had walked into a hotel where coincidentally a friend of hers was staying. It was Tlalok! We rushed to the village for the second time that day and half an hour later, we felt the relief as we hugged him. We brought him to our hotel and the next night, to a shelter, which was full but agreed to take him in and make sure he got all the necessary care, but only if we agreed to adopt him. We said yes, not having any alternative solution. We'd figure out later what exactly we would do with Tlalok, but the plan was set in motion to have him fly over to Belgium, where we live. Four weeks later, we picked Tlalok up at Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam - where he arrived a day later than planned so that we had to stay an extra night there. As I'm writing this, he's in our kitchen with our four other dogs. We're looking to have him adopted, knowing that with each day that he's here, it will be harder to part ways. In the meantime, we also remained in contact with the vet in Mexico and paid her a couple of hundred dollars to spay/neuter Tlalok's siblings and mother. *** After reading some of this story, which I had posted - with some pictures - on Facebook, an EA friend told me...

Do you love incredible stories of animals saving human lives? Well, then this one will definitely amaze you. In the fall of 1924, Curtis Welch, the only doctor of the port town of Nome in Alaska, raised the alarm: there was too little of the cure for a sudden illness striking the town. Dr. Welch ordered an additional batch and was hoping to receive it before winter because otherwise the town would be locked out by ice for 8 months. But the ship with the cure didn't make it in time, and the town had no choice but to wait until spring. There were no signs of an outbreak in Nome, but Dr. Welch was still beside himself for some reason. In December, he took in several patients with a sore throat, and although he ruled out the illness, his suspicions grew with every passing day. Until finally, in January 1925, they turned out to be correct: he officially diagnosed the first case. Nome was home to about 2,000 people, but 10,000 more lived in the surrounding area, all at risk of contracting the illness. Over a million units of the cure were found across the country and shipped to Alaska. But the real challenge was to get them to Nome itself... Learn more about your ad choices. Lisa Baronoff had a problem. Her beloved dog, Toffee, an adorable cocker spaniel, was sick. Here's what happened… She took him on a walk through the streets of New York in the snow. Now, that may seem like a safe thing to do. But it wasn't. Toffee's paws got covered with dangerous, toxic chemicals used to melt snow. As dogs do, he licked his paws. And he got sick. Violently sick. On the advice of her vet, Lisa put boots on him. She tried 10 different pairs. Each was a disaster. The same three frustrating problems kept happening… As you can imagine, it's a challenge to get boots on four squirming paws. They were uncomfortable and kept him from walking normally. And he would somehow always manage to lose one or two of them on their walks before Lisa noticed. So this problem wasn't just frustrating, it was expensive! What did Lisa do? Instead of giving up, she invented Walkie Paws! Not only did this amazing product solve her problem and help keep Toffee healthier, safer and more comfortable, it helped keep her home and furniture much cleaner. So if you and your pup suffer from these same problems, you'll want to listen to this episode of The Dogevity Show. Not only are Walkie Paws functional and practical, not only are they a far better solution than traditional dog boots, but they're also adorable and fun! Want to hear more of Lisa's fascinating story? Tune in now to episode 10 of The Dogevity Show!
You know that feeling when a normally avoidant dog inexplicably gives you love and affection? This is arguably one of the best feelings in the world, especially when you know that dog is infamous for ignoring everyone else in the room. Such an event inspired the story behind one of America's bestselling novels of an adventurous collie named Lad. Tune in for the rest of the story. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lad,_A_Dog

Kelly Forde is a former bartender turned mobile groomer. She says she'd rather get bit by a dog than deal with drunk people and who can possibly blame her? Dogs are way better company than drunks, no doubt. In this episode, Isabel digs into what it takes to establish and run a mobile grooming service. She asks Kelly about her grooming trailer, equipment, and more. Kelly doesn't hold back and even shares the pet peeves she deals with on a daily basis when working with - not the pets - but the pet parents. An open book, Kelly gives us a lesson on all she has learned since becoming Northern Virginia's premiere mobile groomer. EPISODE NOTES: One Dog At A Time
On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Courtney Bellew, Founder of SNARR Northeast Rescue (Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation), a New York-based organization that doesn't turn away animals with severe medical problems or high costs of care. Courtney talks about the biggest challenges and limitations animal rescues face, the positive impact of social media on animal welfare and rescue, as well as the heart-warming adoption story of a paralyzed pooch. Plus, she shares her thoughts on what needs to change and what laws and regulations need to be put in place to help animal welfare and rescue organizations in the US. “It's a balance… It's part of what I do by running a rescue is trying to balance out what we're spending, what we're bringing in, and trying to decide whether it's okay to take a big medical case at the time or not.” - Courtney Bellew Tune in to learn how you can get involved in making an impact in the animal welfare industry and how to volunteer with SNARR Northeast Rescue!
