Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

On the surface, it seemed like Shelly Tygielski had it all: she had achieved her goal of becoming a senior executive before her 40th birthday, had a wide circle of friends and a loving family.  But what no one knew was that she would have panic attacks on her way into work, and she felt adrift even as she was achieving everything she thought she wanted.  To counteract these difficult feelings, Shelly turned to mindfulness to help keep herself grounded.  What started as self preservation in the form of meditation at her local beach each Sunday, turned into a movement, and eventually a book: Sit Down to Rise Up. Listen in to hear Shelly's perfectly imperfect journey, her strong belief that it is only through proximity that we can bridge the divide between people, and how the intersection of that belief with the onset of COVID-19 led her to found Pandemic of Love.   About: After nearly 20 years in Corporate America, holding executive positions leading public and privately held companies, Shelly Tygielski decided to stop following the expected path and start following her lifelong passion – mindfulness and meditation – and began to fuse this passion with her purpose – community organization and ensuring equity, social justice and access to wellbeing for all. At the heart of Shelly's practice is a fierce justice warrior and social activist. She combines her pragmatic business skills with the tenets of mediation and mindfulness to make the world a better place. Shelly is deeply involved in offering trauma-informed healing practices to communities affected by gun violence and mass shootings and has led fully funded retreats for survivors and victims' families representing Parkland, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Aurora, Columbine and more. She was featured on the cover of Mindful Magazine® in June 2019 for her work in this space. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, On March 14th, 2020, at the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shelly posted two simple Google forms online. One read “Get Help” the other “Give Help”. The next morning, she was shocked to find hundreds of requests from both sides of the equation. She began directly matching those in need with patrons willing to help them meet their needs and the Pandemic of Love movement was born. Those few hundred requests grew to thousands, which grew to over 600,000 people matched within six months. Today Pandemic of Love boasts nearly 4000 volunteers worldwide and has directly exchanged nearly $100 million in donations and has connected over 3 million people. This work will continue well beyond the pandemic and Shelly is committed to formalizing mutual aid in communities across the world. Shelly was honored by CNN Heroes in 2020. She is also the author of the book “Sit Down To Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World” which was honored as a Gold winner of the Nautilus Book Award and a finalist for the Fall 2021 Big Idea Book Club. Shelly is certified in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). She is a certified Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute (founded at Google over a decade ago) teacher. Her contemplations and lessons shared freely over social media have gained tens of thousands of followers, and she was recently referred to as one of the most “Powerful Women in Mindfulness” by mindful.org. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Miami and a master's degree from Columbia University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in Philanthropic Leadership at the Lilly School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. She began her journey by teaching free meditation classes Sunday mornings on Hollywood Beach in Florida, and what started as a group of 12 friends grew into a community called “The Sand Tribe” of more than 15,000 in two years. Meet Shelly Tygielski Shelly Tygielski is the author of Sit Down to Rise Up and the founder of the global grassroots mutual aid organization Pandemic of Love. Her work has been featured by over 100 media outlets, including CNN Heroes, The Kelly Clarkson Show, CBS This Morning, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. A trauma-mindfulness teacher and a Garrison Institute Fellow, she has been called one of the "12 Powerful Women of the Mindfulness Movement" By Mindful.org and teaches self-care and resilience at organizations around the world.    I loved every moment of this conversation with Shelly. She is the real deal, my friend. She has followed her deep desire to make a positive change in the world and allowed herself to follow the breadcrumbs. It has led her to start a global non-profit that is all about helping communities worldwide get the services, shelter, goods, and nourishment they need to be well. Tune in to hear questions you can ask yourself that are powerful AF. You can't come away from this interview not feeling motivated to take action and be of greater service. For that reason, and many others, I am a big fan of Shelly's and hope you feel extra inspired after listening to her story. Sit Down to Rise Up After following her inner guidance and signing up for a meditation class back in the early nineties in her graduate program at Columbia University, Shelly Tygielski discovered a calm and deeper connection through the power of mindfulness and meditation. Years later, she realized that if we just focus only on ourselves and our inner world but don't use our inner guidance to make a difference, we are doing ourselves and the world a disservice. Shelly realized that we need to sit down and meditate, get calm and connected, to rise up and make a bigger impact. Her book Sit Down to Rise Up shares her insights a step further, be sure to look for that.  A Pandemic of Love Shelly Tygielski asked herself what she could do to solve the problem and help out her community at the beginning of the pandemic. This grassroots greater desire led her to create a simple spreadsheet that paired up those who needed help and those who could give help. This heart-centered idea ended up spreading across the planet and is now a global non-profit called A Pandemic of Love that has 280 chapters in 16 countries. In sum, you can ask 'What if?' or 'Why not?' If you follow the 'Why not?' thread, you could end up creating a life-changing operation, like Shelly. Two Questions to Change Your Life We talked about the need to not only meditate but also to honor your feelings. As Dr. Dan Siegel said, 'you've got to name it to tame it', or the phrase I live by is 'feel to heal'. The two questions to ask yourself when you are feeling overwhelmed or struggling with your emotions are 1. What can I do about this? and 2. How do I come from a place of love? The focus on being loving with yourself is the game changer to feeling and expressing greater peace, both within and in the greater world. Visit her online at http://www.shellytygielski.com.   Final Thoughts Shelly Tygielski is a wonderful example of how going within can help you expand without. Be sure to look for her book Sit Down to Rise Up. And if you feel called to serve look into her non-profit A Pandemic of Love.         Looking To Help Others Know Who They Are and Design Their Best Life? As you will hear during this interview Helen doesn't have a career. She has a calling. What she is doing now is no surprise to those who know her. Although, she did have a love for the performing arts, but her parents encouraged her to go after another passion. So, Helen uses her voice for those who do not know how to use theirs in a way that will affect much needed change. Helen has overseen the development of a continuum of programs to support women and families in every stage of life as well as to raise awareness and take action to end racial and social injustice. In 2019, Helen received the Crime Victim's Rights Award from the NJ Office of the Attorney General and the Excellence Award of Victim's Justice. Acara penobatan pemenang CNN Heroes of the year berlangsung tadi malam, sayangnya Pak Made Janur Yasa tidak memenangkan penghargaan sebagi Hero of the Year. Welcome to episode 52 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Tomas Alvarez III. Tomas is an award winning social entrepreneur and former nonprofit executive with 15+ years of experience leading social impact initiatives. He is the managing partner and strategy lead at Idea2Form. Tomas is a visionary thinker, cultural broker, and a transformational leader who has been recognized as an Ashoka Fellow, CNN Hero, NBC Latino Top 20 Innovator and Aspen Institute Scholar. His work has been featured by CNN, Forbes, the New York Times, amongst many other media outlets. Unfortunately, Tomas lost his mom at a young age and he shares the ways in which he continues to share her message and legacy through his work. He also talks about how he sees his Dad as a hero being only 26 years old and a widower who encouraged him and his sister to reach for the stars.  Tomas' career started in one direction as his father helped him choose what he should do when it came to his love for the arts. His Dad helped him choose graphic communications. However, that was just a starting point for Tomas. Listen in to hear how Tomas went on to became a social worker, started an organization dedicated to allowing kids to share their creativity through hip-hop dance, and then moved on to start an incredible social impact organization called Idea2Form. Our journey is not always linear. Tomas also asks these questions for all of us to ponder, "what are the things that light you up? What are the things that bring joy and satisfaction that will allow you to be of service to others?" There is so much you get out of being in service of others. It is the reason why people stay in the non-profit sector. Knowing that you go to work everyday and have a positive impact that can help to bring about systemic change is truly fulfilling. Something important that comes up during our conversation is giving ourselves permission to prioritize and understand the value of our work. Remember its not a sprint. It is a marathon. Tomas goes on to share that self-care and keeping our cup full is not being selfish. It is imperative! Listen in to hear Tomas share his answer to 'if I knew then, what I know now'.There are so many lessons learned and inspiring stories that Tomas shares about his journey. I am grateful to have the opportunity to share them. Next week join me for a week of conversations with entrepreneurs from around the world. When we sat down to talk with our next two guests, we were already big fans. They had presented as part of the Embodied Social Justice certificate course that we had taken together this summer, and their theme was clear: how we end racism. In one generation.   So, if your immediate reaction is one of incredulity, then maybe you need to hear this episode more than you think. Because their method is not one of hammering hard facts into people's heads - it's an approach based primarily on love, compassion, and our shared humanity. We talk in-depth about the conversations that can bring seemingly opposite people together, even when issues of politics and race would normally divide them. (And - if you're looking for more tips on how to HAVE those uncomfortable conversations that may be happening in the next couple of weeks around your own holiday tables, we've got those details in depth next week!). At the end of our chat, we realized that this was the conversation we all, collectively, need to have, if we're really serious about moving the needle when it comes to racism. Have questions, comments, or concerns? Email us at hello@dearwhitewomen.com What to listen for: The importance of processing a timeline for ending racism - running TO a goal, instead of running AWAY from a goal How self-care plays into dismantling racism What happens when people focus on the humanity in each other versus constructs such as political or racial divides A specific method - if only for today - that focuses on the intentions we can all bring to our daily lives to begin the process of ending racism ABOUT JUSTIN:                     From growing up with gunshot holes outside of his bedroom window, to sharing the stage with Deepak Chopra, Justin Michael Williams knows the power of healing to overcome. He is an author, top 20 recording artist, and transformational speaker who is using music and meditation to wake up the world. When he was younger, Justin always wanted to be a singer, but a lifetime of being bullied, teased, and abused, made him give up his dream. Then after a seminal moment with his dying grandmother, Justin woke up—and his debut album premiered in the top 20 of the iTunes charts next to Britney Spears and Taylor Swift. He has since been featured by Billboard, Grammy.com, SXSW®, and shared on stages alongside some of the most compelling leaders of our time, including Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, and Chaka Khan.                    With over a decade of teaching experience, Justin has become a pioneering voice of color for the new healing movement—between his podcast, keynotes, and motivational online platforms, Justin's teachings have now spread to more than 40 countries around the globe.            Justin is dedicated to using his voice to serve. To being a beacon of hope for those who are lost, and to making sure all people, of all backgrounds, have access to the information they need to change their lives.        “When people wake up to their own brilliance—it's like magic," says Williams. 'If my work and art can inspire people to do that, then I've fulfilled my mission.” His first book, Stay Woke: A Meditation Guide for the Rest of Us, was released nationwide February 11, 2020. Today's topic is one that is so close to my heart, self-care! By now you've probably heard my burnout story of ending up in an ER due to depletion and overwork. This was a few years ago while I was working on my Master's degree, holding two jobs (radio and TV) managing GiGi's Academy (my first business) and picking up freelance gigs for extra income. It took me years to learn to release the guilt I used to feel when I paused to take care of my mental and physical health. It was especially difficult to learn to let go of the guilt of saying NO to what I used to call “opportunities” that were really just shiny objects; cool to have but not really catapulting me to my big goals. However, when I learned to release that guilt, when I learned to nurture my mind, body and spirit first and foremost, I immediately saw shifts and changes in my life that brought me abundance beyond my dreams, my life partner, stronger relationships and JOY. This lesson is what planted the seed of my Seizing Happy® coaching organization which is dedicated to nurturing the business and the woman behind the business equally. Today's guest wrote one of the best books I've read this year: Sit Down to Rise Up. How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World.” In this book she brings the effects of self-care to the forefront and shows us how it creates impacts on a local and even international level. Intro: Minutes 0 to 5 We’ll be off for two weeks and will be back with a new episode on January 10th. Chandra is doing well in lockdown, but it’s making me even more cynical than normal. Chandra is excited for the Moderna vaccine approval and we both have hope we’ll be able to get vaccinated by spring. Royals: Minutes 5:00 to 21:15 Harry and Meghan announced their new podcast on Spotify, Archewell Audio, on Tuesday. Before that they meted out the news expertly so that the press would freak out over that and wouldn’t have as much energy to focus on their podcast. Meghan did a video for CNN Heroes over the weekend thanking people who address food insecurity in their communities. Plus she invested in a woman-owned startup, Clevr Blends, and sent her neighbor, Oprah, a gift basket with their latte and matcha mixes. The royal reporters got in such a frenzy about that and were oddly silent when the news of the podcast came out. I play a segment from Zoom where Karen, Ameerah and Tanisha talk about this. We first heard in September that Harry and Meghan were going to do a deal with Spotify and now it’s come to fruition. There’s a lot of speculation about how much they got paid for it. I play a segment from that where they’re flirty with each other. I play a segment from Zoom where Laura, Ameerah, Tanisha and Karen talk about the new podcast.  The Cambridges went to a charity event and show called Pantoland for the children of essential workers. Will and Kate weren’t wearing masks on the red carpet, like the other guests and volunteers, but did wear them inside. They did a bizarre voiceover for a video about the event. It was very typical of them in that they were centering themselves when they should have been honoring frontline workers. This week Kate is covering People Magazine in a completely ridiculous profile that’s very similar to the cover story People ran after her Tatler puff piece backfired this summer.  The piece is offensive because it barely acknowledges how privileged she is and how much help she has. Our favorite stories of the year: Minute 21:15 to 38:15 The top 20 most commented posts this year are all royals stories. Some of these are smaller stories that are mostly fun for us. Chandra mentions the outing of Lea Michele. She loved covering it because so many of Lea’s costars and collaborators spoke out against her.  Minute 25: Katie Holmes hooked up with celebrity chef Emilio Vitolo over the summer. Chandra loves how extra they were, making out and taking joy rides for the paparazzi. Her favorite story was one from Page Six which said Katie wasn't very deep. At least Katie and Emilio always wore masks. Minute 28: In October, Trump got covid after playing it down, going maskless and not social distancing. The drama over the announcement and then Trump’s behavior afterwards was outrageous. Chandra thinks that the spike in covid cases in mid and late November was tied to Trump’s superspreader rallies. Minute 30: Chandra has two favorite royal stories. Her first was the Sussexes’ “you coulda had a bad bitch” farewell tour in March.  Her other favorite story was the insane Tatler profile of Duchess Kate, which first came out in late May. The first excerpt sort-of sounded positive about Kate, but the quotes were double-edged. Additional quotes were even shadier. Chandra thinks that the Cambridges authorized people to speak on their behalf but that Tatler turned it around on them. The Cambridges started denying the piece and issued a statement that “This story contains a swathe of inaccuracies and false misrepresentations which were not put to Kensington Palace prior to publication.” However Tatler stood by the story and called the royals out!   Richard Kay in the Daily Mail had a whole point-by-point rebuttal of the piece that made it worse and managed to confirm so many details! Then Kate and William threatened legal action against Tatler and Tatler called them out again! In September, four months after the piece came out online and in print, Tatler first removed a section referring to Prince Williams’ alleged mistress, Rose Hanbury. People theorized that the story was Rose and her friends’ revenge against Kate. A couple of weeks later they removed more parts referring to Kate as a “top CEO” and shading her family. In June, People Magazine ran a cover story about how hard Kate works. It was just a sugary repackaged version of the Tatler story. The royals responded to The Crown just like they responded to the Tatler story, they confirmed details and brought more attention to them while denying them. Comments of the Week: Minutes 38:15 to 41 My comment of the week is from Rapunzel on the post about Vladimir Put acknowledging Biden’s win before Mitch McConnell did. Chandra’s comment of the week is by Summerlover on the post about Will and Kate’s bizarre Pantoland video. Thanks for listening bitches! Happy Holidays! Here’s hoping that 2021 looks up for all of us. Text us or leave a voicemail at 434-218-3219.

Amongst other things, Meghan gave thanks to the many people who are ensuring those in need can access food during the pandemic. The second piece of news that emerged earlier this week was hearing that Meghan is stepping into the world of start-up investing. If Meghan weren’t married to Prince Harry this story wouldn’t have caused a ripple, however it is not often that we get to hear how the royals invest their money. An article about this was published in Fortune Magazine by journalist Emma Hinchliffe, the same lady who had interviewed Meghan earlier this year when Meghan took part in Fortune’s Most Powerful Women – Next Gen. summit. https://fortune.com/2020/12/14/meghan-markle-exclusive-first-investment-clevr-blends/Meghan and Harry have launched their own Podcast being aired exclusively on Spotify in a multi-year deal. In this brilliant episode of Thrive Bites, I sit down with Dr. David Sabgir as we talked about the essentials and health benefits of walking and why it is so paramount to start moving today. Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized, and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee, and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide, including Walk with Future Doc chapters led by medical students! Walking was recently recognized by the Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. We also talk about what it takes to be a music supervisor for t.v. shows, the relationship a supervisor should have with an artist as well as the importance of knowing the music editor for a series. Plus, practical steps you can take to get into this line of work in the music industry.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I do music supervision and music direction at the same time for award shows.*How did you get into working on award shows? I did talent performance shows and along the way I got called to work on a sci-fi award show for Spike T.V. then she started calling me to do Teen Choice Awards and shows like that and people get to know you and start calling you for others.*It takes about 2 months to put an award show.*A “Dub Stage” is where you mix a t.v. show.*Don Mischer Productions does award shows.*I am either editing library music or writing music for the award shows.*Label and management decide what music they want played when their artists come on stage for award shows and I have to work with them to put that together.*Award shows are giant marketing events for artists, films, shows, etc.*When actors or models come on stage to be presenters, I have to figure out what their brand is and create music that fits who they are. Then their managers have to approve it most of the time.*The stress in award shows comes when they don’t tell you who the artists or presenters are until about a week before the show. So you’re doing stuff blind and chasing a lot of rumors and sometimes do work for no reason.*You’re going to do a lot of work for nothing, but that’s part of the job.*I do pop culture award shows, not academy awards, etc.*You only get about 48 hours to turn a song for t.v. shows.*I rarely have time as a music supervisor to reach out and ask licensing agents for songs to put in a show. I have reached out directly to artists and had them send me music that I needed right at that moment.*A music supervisor’s sentiment for putting an artist’s music in a show should be “thank you,” not “you’re welcome, I just got you exposure on social media.” That is devaluing you as an artist.*We have devalued music for the past 25 years.*Music supervisors should appreciate the artists and thank them for making the show successful.*Music supervisors should always be respectful of the musician’s art making their show better.*I would love to see the business of music stop accepting less all the time and try to be innovative and get back to more with innovation.*I moved to Nashville with the goal of saying “how can we break the mold entirely and start over again with a new model that will actually generate real revenue for artists and not just take whatever we’ve left them by giving away things all the time."*I have a company called Black Sleeve Media to create a new medium for music that can be experiential like the video gaming world where people will find value in and spend money on.*We’ve built technology for mobile devices that can play back multiple multi-tracks all at one time to gamify the experience of music and tie it all to different social experiences and communication experiences and festivals, and tie to brands, etc. and make it so you’re actually participating in music. It’s all virtual currency based so you’re not buying music but unlocking features and things they can do with music that will pay the artist the same way that the sale of CD would pay.*It’s mostly on mobile platforms working with artists and festivals to connect with the users.*Advice for getting into this world?*Do a lot of different things. They all have their own life and they all tie together so be free in not saying I only do one thing.*Someone taught me a technical skill to match my mental skill so I could express myself.*If you want to get into music supervision, there is a tremendous amount of value in technical skills. In being able to present your ideas to directors and producers they you hear them in your mind.*Learn how to edit music. Learn how to marry that music to Quicktime so you can take a show and put the scenes and music together edited the way you want.*The difference between being able to present yourself and your creative ideas as a music supervisor to picture, edited the way you hear them so it’s artistically doing what you’re hearing in your head, compared to just telling people your a music supervisor is huge.*Show them you have a clever, creative style.*You can’t show style without being able to present yourself.*Music supervision is a very hard world to get into now.*Learn how to program and do everything. It’s a job.*You don’t have to do it all at once, just get on the path. It’s a long journey.*It’s your presentation.*How do you approach a production company to show them a demo reel so you can become a music supervisor or composer?*You can get an agent like CAA or First Artist Management. There are multiple talent agents you can look up.*If you can show them something, they’ll watch it. You are competing against a bunch of people who have nothing to show for themselves.*Make something to show for yourself.*You don’t have to be signed with an agent to be a music supervisor, but it sure helps.*What is a talent agent going to do for you? If you’re new, they will connect you with indie films and small projects that nobody on the roster wants to do because it pays a smaller amount. They can offer that to you and if you follow through with it and do it well it will lead to bigger things, but you will only get the job is you SHOW them you can do the job, not tell them you can do the job.*Telling people you can do this job doesn’t help you. Showing them you can do this job helps you.*You can research “music supervision agency” or “composer agency.”*Music editors are critical because they are the pass-through in between the composer and the music supervisor and the show.*Music editors are critical people to get to know and send music to and work with.*Music editors are your first line people to get music to as an independent artist because they have to add temp music to picture. Give them music and ask them just to temp with it. It will most likely get replaced but it means that your music is getting shown to directors and you might be able to get a copy back and use it as a demo reel.*You’re just trying to show people what you can do to start and it will come from there.*Nobody is getting music in front of directors and producers more than a music editor with their own music because they have the knife and a picture with no music that needs temp music.*The music editor is the one who shapes the sound of t.v. show pilot more than anyone.*Music editing companies hire music editors. They don’t need an agent.*This is all one big job. Learn how to dive in and edit your music.*Pick 10 different shows and try the same song in all different environments and you’ll find out where it works best. That will teach you a lot about your music.*Comedy is the hardest to thing to put music to. If you can do that well you can jump to the front of the line because it is a very niche thing in Hollywood.*Don’t try to be something. Be you and try you in a lot of different things.*Learn what you’re good at by applying it to all different things.*Doug’s websiteDoug DeAngelis is a composer/producer/musical director and music supervisor. He began his professional career at age 18 at SyncroSound Recording Studio in Boston while attending Berklee College of Music for music synthesis. At age nineteen, he recorded the Nine Inch Nails hit “Head Like A Hole” with Trent Reznor and world-renowned producer Flood.  I met Doug DeAngelis at a Music Supervision event in Nashville recently and was intrigued because he has been a pioneer in what we know as dance, pop and rock music. His unique work as a music director and supervisor for award shows got my attention and I knew I wanted him on the show. In part 1 of our conversation Doug and I discuss his time producing the biggest names in pop music, being a composer for hit television shows and what it takes to be a music director for live t.v.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I programmed analog synthesizers in the early days before MIDI and went to Berklee College of Music to study music synthesis.*I saw music in colors and textures and layers.*Enthusiasm is the single best ingredient in professional musicianship. Nothing beats enthusiasm.*I started working at Syncro Sound studios owned by The Cars.*It had one of the first MIDI rooms in the country and I worked programming.*My first big project to work on was the debut album of Nine Inch Nails.*Then went on tour with the band Inner City, one of the first pop/house (Detroit Techno/Club) music bands.*Doug is a pioneer in Dance/Club music.*Moved to New York to work for David Franken McMurphy and that was my start with working on all the big artists in pop music.*When re-mixing an album, the record label picks the DJ and the DJ picks the producer to do the re-mix.*Moved to L.A. to work on more records and ended up working in T.V. by accident. I got a call to be the music director for a live talent show called Next Big Star with Ed McMahon, a precursor to American Idol. I ended up becoming the music supervisor as well not knowing what that even meant.*What does “clearing a song” mean for use on t.v. and film? It means identifying who the rights holders are for both the physical recording (the master) and the copyright (the publishing). Learning what cost is for all the different types of usages in t.v. or film. Learning how to do the paperwork and going out and getting the rights to license the songs to be used and have them signed off on before the show airs.*Don’t say no to an opportunity. Say yes! Figure it out and do it.*If you don’t take the opportunity when it comes your way, there are hundreds people waiting to take it from you.*You have to be more enthusiastic than ALL the people you’re working with. More than your bosses, the contestants, the artists your producing music for, the songwriters you’re cutting demos for. That’s what people need. That’s the job.*When you are making music for t.v. where you are on the clock, sometimes you are working for hours on a song and find out you can’t clear the rights to use it and you have to scrap it and start over knowing you have a lot more songs still do. Even then you have to stay enthusiastic. That’s the job.*Don’t leave a project until you know you have made your client happy based off what you know you are capable of accomplishing.*If you don’t impose your talent level on the client, you’re not finished yet. That’s enthusiasm.*Elevate everyone around you.*People who are great take everybody with them.*If you want to work professionally as a musician, producer, songwriter, composer, music supervisor, etc. , make “that’s great” the base line for what you do and go beyond that until the client says “that’s the greatest thing I’ve ever heard.”*Big things are easy to get right. It’s the little things that matter.*How did you transition from Music Directing on live t.v. shows and music supervising to be a composer for t.v. shows?*After multiple t.v. talent shows I produced a record for the group Love and Rockets and the singer and I started making music together that landed on some projects. We signed with CAA talent agency and pitched our reel to producer Michael Mann and landed the job scoring Robbery Homicide. That was my first job scoring a t.v. show.*Why sign with an agency like CAA? my partner Kevin already had a connection with them because of his band Love and Rockets and we had an advantage of getting our music heard.*When a new show is coming out, the studios will go to the big agents and say so and so has a new show and he is looking for a certain kind of music. Then everybody sends in their reels and the producer picks what they like.*t.v producers and music supervisors, etc. go to licensing agencies and talent agencies for music and composers because they can vet you and your work to make sure your music is good and you can handle the pressure of the schedule, the pace, etc. which is very taxing.*Scoring a drama is a 6 or 7 day turnaround which means 3 or 4 days to write the score because you have to have time for the producers and directors to hear it and make notes, then you revise the score and have it to stage the day before they mix the show.*All of that is for about 35 minutes of score in an 60 minute show.*What does a 24 hour day look like when you are scoring a show?*Realistically you work 18-19 hours a day and sleep 5-6 hours.* “Spot the episode” - meaning the composer, music supervisor, editor, director and the sound effects group meet together to watch a cut of the episode and you walk through it beat by beat, top to bottom of the showing making notes of what should be score, where there should be a song, where they want only sound design, end score, etc.*Then you have to remember what you talked about and create score and songs around that because there are no sound effects, etc. actually there yet.*When you’re scoring, understand that the better the film, the better your experience getting started at scoring is going to be.*It’s very hard to score to picture that is not good. Film, dialogue, story, cinematography, etc. make everything roll easier.*Music is all about you. When you’re scoring music for picture, it’s not about you anymore.*You always have to keep in mind that the episode started as a script about a year and a half ago going through a bunch or re-writes and back and forth with the studio getting rejections. Then they shot it and re-shot it because the acting wasn’t great, etc.*By the time it gets to you, It is what they want. So you have to be aware of that and score music that is subservient to the dialogue and the story that’s being told and it has to move with it.*The real job of a composer is to make each emotional turn and twist moment by moment with the dialogue and to tell the stories that the director is having a hard time telling.*You have to guide the audience to things that are important and away from things that are important with a score.*You’re also fixing things that aren’t working in the picture. Bad acting, a script that someone is unhappy with, or even subtle things like a beat is too long, etc.*You’re also fixing things as a music supervisor. The job is not just to polish something that was already great.*A lot of times a scene is over done and you need to downplay with the score.*You learn the banter between the executive producers and what they like and dislike so you can know how to fix problems in a scene with a score.*Comedy is the hardest genre to put music to.*The craft of a sitcom is to move from one scene that has a joke to a new scene in 3-5 seconds with a girl crying and getting from a chord that feels great with the joke to a heartbreak in two chords and it not feel horrible.*Every genre is a different craft. Check out Doug's website Doug DeAngelis is a composer/producer/musical director and music supervisor. Today I have the distinct pleasure of interview my colleague and friend Mona Patel for the second time. She just found out she is has made the top ten finalists in CNN's prestigious Heroes Award show, which will air on the same channel on December 17th at 6:00pm. On a spring day in 1990, Mona Patel was walking to class at Cal Poly University when a drunken driver slammed into her. She was 17. Weeks later, when Patel got out of the ICU, she underwent her first amputation. It was the start of seven years' worth of surgeries in attempts to salvage the rest of her leg. But along the way, as Patel continued to struggle physically with her disability, she also struggled to find a support group for amputees. In 1997, with the prospect of another amputation, Patel made a promise. "I vowed that once I got back on my feet, I would start one," she said. Today, Patel's nonprofit, the San Antonio Amputee Foundation, aims to help amputees rebuild their lives. The group offers peer support, education and recreation opportunities, as well as financial assistance for basic home and?car modifications and prosthetic limbs. Please vote for her every day and help her win the grand prize of $100,000.00. This will go toward expanding and funding her program for youth in living with limb loss. About the host.
