Please be aware that this conversation contains references to sexual abuse and suicide....Where in your life can you create the conditions for tenderness?...In 1989, Richard Propes left downtown Indianapolis in his wheelchair with $20 in his pocket, a backpack on his wheelchair, and a handful of press releases announcing his "Tenderness Tour." A paraplegic/double amputee born with spina bifida, Propes traveled for 41 days and over 1,000 miles alone around Indiana in an effort to look for good in the world after a life that had been defined by disability, sexual abuse, and the recent suicide of his wife and death of his newborn daughter. He returned from that successful journey determined to break his own cycles of abuse and to do what he could do to make the world a better and safer place for everyone. 35 years later, Propes has traveled over 6,000 miles by wheelchair, raised over $1 million for charitable organizations worldwide, and is living what he calls his "good life." Propes is the founder of the Race Away From Domestic Violence, a 5k event in Indianapolis raising funds for the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and is the author of The Hallelujah Life. Propes graduated summa cum laude from Martin University and is a graduate of Bethany Theological Seminary. He's the founder of TheIndependentCritic.com and is a member of the Indiana Film Journalists Association with his reviews carried by Rotten Tomatoes. Richard currently serves as the director of provider services for the Bureau of Disabilities Services (state of Indiana) and has produced a wide variety of fundraising events including poetry readings, concerts, the benefit CD "Give a Girl a Chance," the IndyFringe show "Laughing Sober," and served as executive producer of comic Rick Garrett's comedy DVD "Straight Outta Cowan." Richard has received numerous honors for his violence prevention work and disability advocacy including Indiana Minority Business Magazine's "Champions of Diversity" Award, Indiana's Sagamore of the Wabash, Prevent Child Abuse America's highest honor the Donna J. Stone Award, and the Jefferson Award. Academy Award-qualifying Heartland International Film Festival and Indy Shorts both present the Richard D. Propes Social Impact Award annually to filmmakers whose works exemplify a dedication to social impact. Having beaten cancer twice in the past year, Richard just completed a 160-mile wheelchair ride in September 2024 that raised $115,000 and eliminated nearly $17 million in medical debt for hoosiers.Today, Abbie and Richard discuss the creation and evolution of the Tenderness Tour, un-defining and redefining love, and learning to embrace the beautiful complexity that is interdependence. ...Stories Lived. “It does help you biologically for those reasons because cortisol and oxytocin can't coexist in our bodies. Which means the more stressed we are, the less likely we are to be generous, but the reverse is true. If we are feeling really authentically generous toward others, toward ourselves, then the cortisol doesn't have a chance to grow because the oxytocin sort of blocks it out. Either way, generosity can affect us on the inside as well as it affects others on the outside.” - Wendy H. Steele   Wendy H. Steele is the founder and CEO of Impact100, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting and empowering women to create a transformational impact in their communities. Since launching Impact100 in 2001, Wendy has dedicated her life to encouraging women to see themselves as both activists and philanthropists, bringing them together in order to unite their efforts, support one another, and enrich their communities as a team. What began as a grassroots effort in Cincinnati has today collectively granted more than $123 million to worthy nonprofits across more than 65 local chapters and four countries. The importance of giving back with the intent to leave the world a little better than she found it was instilled in her from a young age, leading her to see that all of us have something important to give. Wendy believes that, in giving to others, we gain in incalculable ways, and we can encourage others to do the same.  Wendy's debut book, Invitation to Impact: Lighting the Path to Community Transformation (MFF Publishing, 2023), shares her personal journey building one of today's most powerful grassroots organizations and invites women to become part of the solution by impacting their very own communities. Part business book, part memoir, Invitation to Impact provides insights for catalyzing meaningful change by giving women a seat at the table and a chance to join the movement—or spark one within themselves.    In recognition of her work with Impact100, Wendy was selected by Forbes for the July 2021 50 over 50 Impact list recognizing women changing communities through social entrepreneurship, law, advocacy, and education. We are wrapping up our podcast series on Using Your Voice with a very special guest. Sharon McMahon is a former high school government and law teacher whose Instagram went viral in 2020 (she now has over 1 million followers!) and who is the host of the podcast Here's Where it Gets Interesting.  Sharon is “on a mission to combat political misinformation by sharing non-partisan facts about the US government and democracy.”  Our lead speaking coach Diane Diaz is a super fan of Sharon and has been following her since the 2020 election season.  Diane reached out to Sharon who graciously agreed to chat with Diane and share with us how she started using her voice where she was with what she knew. In this episode, Sharon shares how her journey began with one small post on her Instagram about wanting to change one person's life through a monetary donation and has since grown into 1 million followers on Instagram and a community of people, lovingly dubbed the Governerds, who've raised over $7 million for various causes.    Diane and Sharon talk about: How Sharon's podcast was born out of her audience demanding more content than she could share on Instagram Why Sharon decided to write a book  Why Sharon challenges the notion that small contributions are insignificant, especially for women How Sharon manages the haters and trolls that can come with using your voice to do meaningful work The importance of thinking beyond the present to understand the ripple effects of your voice and actions Why each of us should embrace the courage to speak up, even in the face of criticism   Sharon's belief that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something, emphasizes the power of small contributions. Sharon's journey is a remarkable reminder that our voice has the potential to create lasting change. She believes we must shed the belief that our contributions are insignificant and instead embrace the power we hold to shape our world.  We hope you'll feel inspired by Sharon to find your courage, use your voice, and engage in meaningful action so that you have a bigger impact in the world!   About Our Guest: Sharon McMahon is on a mission to curate facts, fun, and inspiration by educating Americans on democracy, politics, and history. This is not a new concept.   We know that giving and the resulting good feelings can spread rather quickly.  What you may not know is that just being asked to be generous and trigger something life-changing in people.  They may respond with a “no" (even politely) but just that thought can change their perspective.   Don't be afraid to ask someone to be generous.  It's good for all parties.   Wendy Steele is the Founder and Chief Executive at Impact 100.  She's also a TEDx Speaker and winner of the Jefferson Award for Public Service.  We don't have official credentials but those accomplishments make her an impactmaker. Ocean Robbins, was born a changemaker. Recently, his Dad John Robbins (author of Diet for a New America and other great books) was on the podcast, and the response from that episode was overwhelming. Many of you wrote in to say just how moved you were by John's authenticity and his willingness to walk away from the Baskin Robbins fortune to forge his own “rocky road” of happiness without the strappings of running a multi-million dollar company that simply didn't align with his values. John and his wife built a one-room cabin in Canada and had a son. That son, now 48-year-old, Oceans is “a chocolate chip” off the old block of his father. As co-founder and CEO of The Food Revolution Network, Ocean thrives as an active author, activist, educator, and speaker. His goal? To educate and inspire people to bring their life and food choices more in alignment with their values to create a more healthy and loving world. From his very first peace rally at the age of seven, to his own natural bakery business at the age of 10, all the way through his non-profits and speaking tours in high school and beyond, it's obvious that Ocean is living his purpose to be a beacon of love and kindness - hoping to bridge the gaps that separate us and, instead, shine a bright light on our commonalities as humans and stewards of this wonderful earth. More About Ocean Robbins Ocean Robbins is the CEO and co-founder of the 500,000+ member Food Revolution Network — one of the largest communities of healthy eating advocates on the planet. He has held hundreds of live seminars and events that have touched millions of lives from 190 nations. Ocean is founder and was director of the nonprofit YES!, which has led transformational events for 650,000 leaders in 65 nations. He's a recipient of the national Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service, the Freedom's Flame Award, the Harmon Wilkinson Award, and numerous other honors. Ocean has served as adjunct professor for Chapman University, and on the boards of Friends Of The Earth, Creating Our Future, Tipping Point Network, Turning Tide Coalition, and many other organizations. Ocean's grandfather founded Baskin-Robbins, and his father, John Robbins, walked away from the family company and ice cream fortune to write bestsellers, including Diet for a New America, and to become a renowned health advocate. Now, Ocean is on a mission to transform the industrialized food culture into one that celebrates and supports healthy people and a healthy planet, and he's inviting YOU to join the food revolution. Ocean's been seen by hundreds of millions in TV, radio, online, and in-person appearances. My guest for this episode is Danny Mendoza. Danny is a foster youth advocate, public speaker, marketer, and founder, and CEO of the nonprofit Together We Rise (TWR). A leader in philanthropic team building and events, Danny empowers thousands of individuals, groups, and organizations to give back to their communities. Danny founded TWR at age 19, in 2008, and they have now touched the lives of over 600k foster kids and allocated millions of dollars to better their lives. Danny founded TWR after he discovered that his 9-year-old cousin was living in his car. He started mentoring kids at a local group home, and the direction of the new nonprofit was defined by what they told him–they wanted bikes, so Danny started a Build-A-Bike program; they were being told to move all their belongings between homes in trash bags, and so Danny started TWR's flagship Sweet Case program to provide duffels. Today, Together We Rise is committed to helping foster kids at every stage of their foster journey. Last year alone, they helped over 130,000 foster youth and activated over 30,000 volunteers. In addition to Build-A-Bike and Sweet Cases, they partner with major organizations to offer STEM Boxes, mentoring, Disney Days, sibling reunification events, shopping sprees, and much more to enrich the lives of foster youth. During the pandemic, they started the Rapid Response program to provide emergency support to aged-out foster youth who were at imminent risk of experiencing homelessness or food insecurity; by December of 2020, Rapid Response had distributed nearly half a million dollars across 29 different counties in California, and the program continues today. Most recently, Danny's #FosterLoveFriday initiative is giving away a total of $250,000 in direct cash support to foster families. Danny's work has been featured on the TODAY Show, Good Morning America, Forbes, and more. He has been awarded the Do Something Award, the Jefferson Award for Public Service, and most recently Together We Rise won the 2021 Foster Morey Award for Organization of the Year.   Here's what to expect during the episode: How can you help children in foster care? Bill Myers Inspires  Imagine being a white person born with a life threatening illness and the only people who did not given up on you were black people. Then later finding yourself homeless and black people once again providing guidance, shelter and a pathway forward in your life. Richard Propes shares his powerful story of how black people encouraged, influenced and inspired his life. Since 1989, Indianapolis activist/writer Richard Propes has traveled over 6,000 miles by wheelchair on a one-man mission he calls "The Tenderness Tour," an effort to end violence in the lives of children he began in 1989 with a 41-day, 1000+ mile wheelchair ride around the state of Indiana. While Richard's childhood story is dramatic, from his birth and unexpected survival with spina bifida to his early experiences with childhood sexual abuse, even more dramatic is the story of Richard's survival and creation of a life far beyond anyone's expectations including his own. Now in his early 50's and still far surpassing medical expectations, Richard continues to be an award-winning activist and writer who has been nominated two years in a row for Indy's "Best Human" in the Indy Star's annual community choice awards. In addition to raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for children's organizations worldwide, Propes is the founder of the Race Away From Domestic Violence, an annual 5k event benefiting the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence that is now in its 17th year. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, Richard is the founder/publisher of TheIndependentCritic.com, a member of the Indiana Film Journalists Association, and his reviews are carried on Rotten Tomatoes. He's the author of "The Hallelujah Life" and has produced two short films, an IndyFringe show, a comedy DVD, and a number of poetry readings, concerts, and special events.
