This past week I was reminded of a wonderful documentary about filmmaker Richard Linklater called Dream Is Destiny. The reason this came to mind was because so many people in his life doubted or belittled his work. And yet he kept going and his work resonates with many. I had someone disrespect my work and that's what triggered the recall of the documentary. Which speaks to a few things. One, don't let critics sway you. Two, look for evidence, like the documentary, of people succeeding in ways that you'd like to, doing it in ways that may appear odd. Beyond this, I talk about reuniting with friends and visiting Smorgasburg LA, continuing to work on my latest script and how it's different that the outline, and why I'm thinking it might be time to quit soccer. So check out this episode and please share your thoughts down in the comment section or hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. Fernando Lopez talks about his role in carrying the torch of a family legacy, co-founding the I Love Micheladas brand, launching the Michi Mobile, hosting a Youtube show and collaborating with the weekly food event Smorgasburg LA. After immigrating to Los Angeles from Oaxaca in the 90's, Fernando Sr., found success as a budding restaurateur. With rave reviews from the likes of the legendary food critic, Jonathan Gold, one venture led to many and Mr. Lopez was well on his way to building an empire. Then, the economic crisis of 2008 hit and all was lost. Facing bankruptcy and the possibility of losing the cherished restaurant business their father worked so hard to build, Fernando and his siblings decided to take the reigns. Several years later, La Guelaguetza is thriving and the family business has spawn multiple products at retail, including a cook book highlighting Oxacan cuisine based on recipes from the restaurant. The Lopez siblings have become some of LA's best known culture advocates, tastemakers on all things Oaxaca and preservers of a family legacy that epitomizes the American Dream. We caught Eric Demby just before launching his next big venture: Smorgasburg LA. It features highly curated artisanal makers, local food sellers, and other vendors in a marketplace patterned off of his prior successes in Brooklyn and New York City, starting with Brooklyn Flea in 2008. Eric gives advice for artisans looking to launch their own products in outdoor market, and tells stories about the rollercoaster ride of Brooklyn Flea and his colorful vendors over the years. He was a huge force in stoking a culture of manufacturing local artisanal goods in Brooklyn over the past decade. As he sets his sights on Los Angeles, what is it like for him to try to create culture and community in a city you don't live in? And surely this isn't the first artisanal market in LA. Will he be able to rise above the noise and get his new venture in an overlooked industrial part of Los Angeles get off the ground? For show notes: http://makeitinla.org/ericdemby
