In 1967, the NCAA did something almost unthinkable - it outlawed the dunk. For nearly a decade, one of basketball's most electrifying plays was banned in college hoops, a move widely seen as an attempt to curb the dominance of towering stars like Lew Alcindor. In this episode, we look back on why the rule was created, the official justifications behind it, the cultural and competitive tensions surrounding it, and how it reshaped the NCAA tournament during one of the sport's most transformative eras. From UCLA's dynasty to the evolution of the skyhook and the eventual reinstatement of the dunk in 1976, this is the story of the rule that tried to change basketball. #ncaatournament #collegebasketball #ucla #ncaa

Send a textA working dog powers through a hot training session, then stops. The clock is ticking, because core temperature can keep climbing even after the effort ends. We sit down with JAVMA student award winner Sarah Parnes to unpack a simple, field-ready strategy that changes outcomes: cool first, transport second. Using the gear most of us carry—a water bottle, a towel, a small cooler—Sara's team tested multiple methods outdoors to mirror real-world conditions. One approach stood out: a voluntary head dunk that quickly blunted the post-exercise temperature rise while other techniques only reduced heat more slowly. We dig into why the head matters for thermoregulation, how targeted cooling may protect the brain and calm the system, and what owners can do when water is limited. If a dog won't dunk, pouring water over the head or using a wet towel still helps, but the dunk delivered the strongest effect. We also break down the early signs of heat stress that many people miss: ears pulled back, a long curled tongue, squinting eyes, shade seeking, and sudden reluctance to move. For brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs, we share prevention tactics that reduce risk on hot days, from timing exercise to creating shade and ensuring fresh water.Sarah also opens up about the research journey, from designing realistic protocols to exploring unanswered questions—like how post-exercise drinking during a dunk may influence cooling, and what head-focused alternatives work for dogs that avoid submersion. Whether you handle working dogs or walk a weekend warrior, you'll leave with practical tools to act fast and smart when the temperature spikes. If this conversation helps you or your dog community, subscribe, share the episode, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find these life-saving tips.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.24.06.0368INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ? "Chloe turned to me and said I'm never going to dance on this stage again, am I? Like she knew, it was really sad," remembers Christi as she looks back on her last ALDC Annual Dance Concert. On "45 Second Solos", Chloe doesn't even get a chance to shine as she's put on medical rest due to her fracturing her foot suddenly offscreen. Of course it didn't seem that way to viewers as the cover story for her eye problem in the week prior was a foot problem as well, so now it just comes across as Christi and Chloe being a little shifty on screen, leading to accusations off screen of faking it for the camera (more on that in this week's Producer Notes).Abby gives the girls a challenge: perform a 45 second solo of "their choosing" (as in the Producer's choosing) before the actual recital this week to determine who will get a solo at Nationals. To add some drama, Abby brings in Kamryn as Chloe's replacement. Christi is still made at Abby for trying to convince the judges in a previous competition to throw out Chloe's win in favor of Kamryn, so this development doesn't sit well. And to make matters worse, multiple fights break out between the moms... they just mostly happen off camera (again, lot of stuff in the Producer's Notes this week). But Abby has a solution to ease everyone's tension... a dunk tank! Why?! Who cares!Quotes“We all have to take a moment and just apreciate the fact that Christi and Kelly have any sort of tech capabilities whatsoever. Because I have the perfect example of why I'm not qualified to do tech. When I was prepping tech for Pillow Talk, I literally electrocuted myself." (10:05-10:24 | Christi)“The dance concert is the culmination of all the hard work the kids have done all year; it's the hottest ticket in town. Gurl no it's not, because you sent us to Shady-side and we couldn't even get the gays to come! There were rhinestones! It is not the hottest ticket in town." (20:59-21:14 | Christi)“Abby says at the dance concert I will be the executioner, judge and jury... it should be judge, jury and executioner. She did it the wrong way just like she did red, white and black all over." (29:51-30:03 | Christi)“Abby turns to Sarah and calls her a dingbat for sitting in... Oh she stole my name!" 1. Dunking on Gavin Newsom Ted Cruz responds to a tweet by Newsom blaming Trump for rising electricity prices. Cruz uses AI (Grok) to highlight that the states with the highest electricity rates are Democrat-led with strong renewable energy mandates. He argues that liberal policies, not Trump, are responsible for high energy costs. The discussion includes a critique of renewable energy mandates and infrastructure challenges in blue states. 2. Democrats’ “Forbidden Words” The think tank Third Way released a memo listing 45 words/phrases Democrats should avoid, claiming they alienate everyday Americans. Examples include: “privilege,” “birthing person,” “microaggression,” “cisgender,” “food insecurity,” and “environmental violence.” Cruz and Ferguson mock the list, comparing it to George Carlin’s “seven dirty words” and argue that the problem isn’t just language but ideology. 3. SCOTUS Victory for Trump on DEI Grants The Supreme Court ruled 5–4 in favor of the Trump administration, allowing it to cancel $783 million in NIH grants tied to DEI and gender ideology. The ruling was based on jurisdictional grounds—plaintiffs filed in the wrong court. Justice Amy Coney Barrett was the swing vote, siding with conservatives on the funding issue but not on reversing DEI guidance. Cruz and Ferguson discuss the implications for future lawfare and judicial activism. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. The debate over demon possession in Christians is an ongoing discussion as the modern deliverance movement makes a resurgence online and into corporate gatherings. Many have been taught that generational curses, ancestral demons, soul ties, and such require expulsion from born-again believers. Deliverance practitioners will say that deliverance is the children's bread, and there are those who believe that they have debunked the opposition to these practices.Join me in the second installment of this two-part podcast as we consider such claims of debunking alleged myths opposing the modern deliverance movement.Resources:Is Denying Deliverance Blasphe… - The Lovesick Scribe Podcast - Apple PodcastsFrom the New Age Frying Pan to… - The Lovesick Scribe Podcast - Apple PodcastsMy info:Website: http://www.lovesickscribe.comSubscribe to my blog here: http://eepurl.com/dfZ-uHInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lovesickscribe/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lovesickscribeblog

At the Section of Biology, he teaches the courses “Biologie et Société” and “Comprendre l'évolution”. He is the author and editor of several books, including Darwin Mythology: Debunking Myths, Correcting Falsehoods. In this episode, we focus on Darwin Mythology. We start by talking about the problem with hero-worshipping in science, and what is a myth. We then go through several myths and falsehoods associated with Darwin, including whether his ideas were original to him; the Galápagos Islands and the finches; whether Darwin was an armchair theoretician; his reaction to Lamarck's ideas; Alfred Russell Wallace; whether Darwin's opponents had good arguments; the origins of the phrase “survival of the fittest”; essentialism; African human origins; whether Darwin's theory was revolutionary; and whether it makes sense to question Darwin. Finally, we talk about what we can learn about how science works by debunking such myths.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Knee pain can be managed with proper training and techniques. Isometric exercises play a crucial role in injury prevention. Diet can significantly impact tendon health and performance. As athletes age, training methods must adapt to prevent injuries. Different jumping techniques can affect knee stress differently. Warm-ups are essential to prevent injuries, especially as one ages. Cool-downs can aid recovery and reduce next-day soreness. Managing jump volume and intensity is key to longevity in the sport. Listening to one's body is crucial for effective training. Jordan has never used injections or stem cells for recovery. He emphasizes conservative management and load management for knee issues. Plyometrics should be approached with caution, focusing on depth jumps and seated jumps. Single effort jumps are preferred over multi-effort jumps to avoid knee strain. Lifting techniques should be adjusted based on individual comfort and pain levels. Muscle imbalances should be addressed by strengthening weaker muscles rather than focusing solely on balance. Footwear can significantly impact knee health; personal preference varies. Pain management during training can involve isometric exercises and adjustments in technique. Common tendon issues arise from excessive jumping without proper recovery and management. Weight training is essential for dunkers to prevent injuries and improve performance. It's February 19th. This day in 1967, the NCAA has decided to ban dunking in the college game -- a move largely seen as a response to Lew Alcindor (soon known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and other Black players using the move.Jody, Niki, and Kellie are joined by Mike Sielski of The Philadelphia Inquirer to talk about the larger political and racial context of the dunk ban, and what the dunk has meant to the game of basketball over the years.Mike's new book is "Magic In The Air: The Myth, the Mystery and the Soul of the Slam Dunk"This Day In Esoteric Political History is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX.Your support helps foster independent, artist-owned podcasts and award-winning stories. If you want to support the show directly, you can do so on our website: ThisDayPod.comYou can also find our newsletter, merch store, transcripts, and lot more on our site.Get in touch if you have any ideas for future topics, or just want to say hello. Today's word of the day is ‘embarrassed' as in the Lakers as in LeBron James as in Anthony Davis as in JJ Redick. The Lakers lost by 41 points to the Heat last night. Are you kidding me? Redick is in his first season as a head coach and the uphill battle he must fight with this Lakers team is gargantuan. (5:09) Zion Williamson is still going to be out. Hamstring. Always the hamstring. (6:50) Ja Morant said he is going to stop dunking. Seriously. (13:02) Yesterday the CEO of United healthcare was assassinated outside of a hotel in New York City. Horrible. The comments and vitriol online towards Brian Thompson and his family is horrifying. (26:31) Review: Parasite. (31:40) The Jaguars ended Trevor Lawrence's yesterday by placing him on IR. And now he'll undergo shoulder surgery. The other part to this story is Azeez Al-Shaair's suspension was upheld by the NFL. (38:00) Diontae Johnson has been suspended by the Ravens for a game. Why? Because he wouldn't enter a game? What… (43:45) Another betting scandal. Here we go. (50:50) NPPOD Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
