POPULARITY
From Billboard to Soul Train to the Grammys, each year, the music industry recognizes the extraordinary work of musicians, writers and artists with exclusive awards. To win a Grammy, for example, carries a prestige that instantly verifies a creative as a legitimate talent. Even just being nominated carries significant weight. But how legit are these awards nowadays and how fair is the process of selecting the winners?

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE This week is a mega mix of five FORCE-ful artists and eight LPs (and even more on the Spotify playlist – see below), so let's get to it. Pop electro-funk was HUGE in the 1980s, a real force (expect to see this word often) in the music world. And as far as I'm concerned it all started with Soulsonic Force, led by THEE HIP-HOP LEGEND, Afrika Bambaataa. “Planet Rock” sealed the deal for me as far as electro-infused hip-hop, and almost singlehandedly started the electro-funk movement. Everything else you read about below you can go ahead and credit to Afrika, Soulsonic, and “Planet Rock”. Yes Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Yes OF COURSE Prince. But AS BIG A YES should be shouted out to the SEMINAL band/production team, Full Force. Not only did they have their own hits, such as the impossible to resist “Alice, I Want You Just for Me”, but they wrote & produced (for years after the 1980s) hits for acts small and large, such as The Real Roxanne, UTFO, Samantha Fox, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, La Toya Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Backstreet Boys, Rihanna & James Brown (the first four of which are in my Spotify playlist). So why are they not better known??? How many legendary production teams have kicked that much as for that many OTHER legendary performers and not been lauded and revered and lionized? Do NOT go a step further in reading this without listening to “Alice” and at least three of those other artists. Give them the props they deserve. They're still out there – all the original members – and still kickin' it. And finally you have the Force MDs, a band (from Staten Island of all places) that paved the way for all kinds of hip-hop infused r&b and slow jams like new jack swing, quiet storm, Boys II Men, Bell Biv DeVoe, and SO MANY other 1990s acts. Their hit, “Tender Love”, was one of the prime prototypes, and a song I sang & played on the piano over & over. It's sad that most of the members are now dead. All the more reason to revisit this other vital pop electro funk band. Here's a Spotify playlist with tons of these songs, as well as several of my CLEARLY INFLUENCED songs: The Unheralded FORCEs of Pop Electro Funk - Spotify playlist Do you remember these bands? The songs? Considering how 99% of pop music can now be classified as some version of pop electro funk, do you think these artists should be much better known? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues its steely grip everywhere on the planet, we're left to ponder what was essentially a lost year for many of us. Those of us fortunate to still have a job and earn a paycheck, are left wondering what might have been. Lost dreams, shattered hopes, delayed opportunities combined with severe limitations on our personal freedoms will leave 2020 as the 'year that got away.' Musically, I was not inspired to do much as DJ gigs evaporated, along with house parties and most social gatherings. Our respective social bubbles limited most of us to seeing family members only, and even then from a distance of six feet and wearing a face mask. Still, I remain optimistic this pandemic will be behind us soon and we'll resume our pre-COVID activities like playing sports, vacationing, concerts, dining out, parties and being with friends in large group settings. So hug those dearest to you and give thanks to God that happier days are on the horizon. This 'Best of' set includes many of my favourite songs this year, ranging from creative remixes, soulful house with the usual dose of smooth Brazilian jazzy grooves and soul. As always, stream, share, download. Enjoy! 1. So much time - The Futures (Sunner Soul mix) 2. Water Baby - Tom Misch 3. Save room for us (Casual Connection mix) - Tinashe 4. Brazilian Soul - The Knocks feat. Sofi Tukker 5. Sun in the Sky - Quasimodo 6. La La means I love you (David Kust remix) - The Delfonics 7. You fooled around (Danny G's Soulsonic mix) - Sister Sledge 8. Katmandu (Jazzanova remix) - Ivan Conti 9. Love Song 28 - Jullian Gomes feat. Bobby 10. Let it go - Louie Vega & The Martinez Boys 11. Our love - Louie Vega feat Anane 12. Player - Shashi 13. Bom Motivo - Toco feat. Rosalia De Souza 14. Melachula - Jose Armando Castilla 15. Outro Lugar - Jazz Moon Five
After a month of listening to this iconic and often talked about early pioneer album in the history of hip hop, rap and EDM, we came back together to discuss the history, the music and how it holds up today. There was lots of great discussion on this album and we also had lots of laughs. this track from 1982 was the born of hip hop. The combination of Krafwerk electrinic and street noice created a new sound that lead to Electro Boogie, Hip Hop and Techno. We rebuilt it with Roland TR808, Prophet 5, Minimoog and Fairlight samples. Lead Vocals by Joya, back and Vocoder Voice by Xanu

I remember seeing Kenny using for most of his sets around the 98-02 period, namely Space at Bar Rhumba, Plastic People(W1), Soulsonic at the Annexe and I particularly remember the Friday night he played in the basement of Bar Solo in Camden and also recall him being on the billings for the opening nights and ongoing at London's first new generation super clubs, the ill fated Home and highly succesful fabric.. This was testament to how influential and revered KH was.. With the unique selection and style that he delivered, you never knew completely what might be played, but you were always guaranteed it would be good, different and delivered in a consumately professional manner. RIP Kenny, you were a very special kind of DJ, I had many great nights seeing you play, the world will miss you. 01 Outrage - That Piano Track (Junior Boys Own) 02 Cine City - Are You Sure Joe(Paper) 03 Presence Ft Shara Nelson - I Sense Danger (Pepe Bradock mix) (Pagan) 04 Logan - La Costa EP (Pliable (FR)) 05 Seven Dub - Run for Cover (Pro-Zak Trax (FR)) 06 Loft 55 - 1-800 Gigolo (MES) 07 Alex Kidd - Soul College/Jazz Course EP (White(UK)) 08 Rick Preston - Soul Searchin' (Glagow Underground) 09 Silver Haze - Hidden Park (SubScience) 10 House Master Boyz/Rude Boy Of House - House Nation (Simply)
