They tell hilarious behind-the-scenes stories from the sets of these big time productions, reveal some of the secrets to Peter's special effects and the origin of "Sexy Dorothy". About Peter Zavadil: Referring to himself as "tirelessly enthusiastic," or, "caffeine enhanced" -- depending on your perspective -- Peter has been working in the film business for over twenty years starting from the bottom and working his way up. Zavadil arrived in the music industry initially as an executive producer of music videos working with such legends as Waylon Jennings, Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette , Alabama and countless others. He then moved into directing and has gone on to work on music video, commercial and television ventures. As a director, he has received numerous ACM and CMA nominations including two CMA wins, a National Emmy and numerous regional NARAS awards, a World Fest Award and various other awards and nominations. Would you say no to a session with Bono and Edge? Dan talked about working at Memphis Sound Productions, recording B.B. King & Paul Schaffer, writing manuals for API, mixing with SSL, and teaching at one of the top recording colleges in Nashville TN. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Dan Pfeifer a professor in the Department of Recording Industry and Graduate Faculty Member at Middle Tennessee State University, and a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He got his Bachelor of Music degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1983 and Master of Arts degree from the University of Memphis in 1987 with an emphasis in audio engineering and music production. Before to coming to MTSU, Dan worked professionally as an audio engineer and producer, working with artists that include B.B. King, ZZ Top, Albert Collins, Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others. He has also served as 2nd Vice President and member of the Board of Governors for the Memphis Chapter of the NARAS, and he is a voting member of the Recording Academy and a professional member of the Audio Engineering Society. Dan has received many awards including the MTSU Alumni Association True Blue Citation of Distinction for MTSU Faculty, the MTSU Distinguished Achievement in Creative Activity Award, the Tennessee Board of Regents Academic Excellence and Quality Award, the MTSU Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Recording Industry Outstanding Alumni Award for University Service, and was inducted into the MTSU Band of Blue Hall of Fame. But most significantly for this interview, Dan was my audio teacher 30 years ago when I was at MTSU as an undergraduate student learning the basics of audio and recording. Dan taught me with a black board and three recording studios everything audio including the difference between various types of microphones, audio signal flow, the science of sound and hearing, flow charts for mixing consoles, and how to align an analog tape machine. Basically, Dan was the first teacher in my life to teach me stuff that would carry forward to change my life and career and inspire me to make records for 30 years. And the only part I regret is making those stupid bubble charts to represent audio mixes. You know the ones with a big bubble for the kick drum and a little bubble for the hi hat. "Writing (or drawing) about music is like dancing about architecture." This episode is dedicated to Ben Morton my classmate from MTSU. Ben may your bass have six strings on it in heaven and may you never have to change them again. Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by discussing multiple topics that unfolded over the weekend. First, Dom talks about his time spent on Fox and Friends on Sunday morning, in which he was called upon to lend his expertise to provide commentary on Mexican ads that use footage from Philadelphia to warn citizens of drug abuse. Then, Dom provides an update on safe injection sites in Philadelphia, telling how and why we're closer to having illegal injection sites in the City. After that, Dom and his producer Dan debate Dave Chappelle's appearance on Saturday Night Live in which he offered a comedic defense of anti-Semites Kanye West and Kyrie Irving, with Dan arguing that cancel culture has gone too far. Throughout the hour, Dom asks his side question of the day to listeners, asking for people who once had fame and completely disappeared. In today's second hour, Dom welcomes Dr. Elana Fishbein, Founder and President of No Left Turn in Education, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a situation she's uncovered during a October 25th West Chester, PA school board meeting, in which Superintendent Dr. Bob Sokolowski admitted that, while he was serving as a Principal, helped hide a student's gender transition from parents. This comes after months of pushback by liberals about conservatives creating boogeymen in schools that this kind of stuff is not happening. Fishbein explains the situation in schools, and why she and other mothers with school-aged children have bonded together to form No Left Turn, to push back against overbearing school boards creating solutions for problems that don't exist. Viens no arhaiskākajiem šablonu veidošanas paņēmieniem fiksēts Fidži salās, kur auduma apdrukai izmantoti banānu lapu trafareti. Iezīmīgs ir Ķīnas Tanu dinastijas periods - 607-907.g. - lielais sociālpolitisko procesu un kultūras jomu attīstības laiks. Ķīna strauji paplašinājās, tika ieviestas papīra naudaszīmes; apsteidzot Gūtenbergu, tika izgudrots tipogrāfiskais salikums. Līdzās senajām Ķīnas reliģijām Daoismam un Konfūcismam strauji izplatījās Mahājānas budisms. Tas postulēja, ka cilvēka garīgā izaugsme atrodas ciešā saistībā ar Budas attēla precīzas kopēšanas praksi. Imperatori varēja būvēt milzu Budas statujas, augstmaņi – pasūtināt ksilogrāfiskos dēlīšus vienas vai vairāku krāsu drukai, bet vienkāršais cilvēks, kam taču arī gribējās piedzīvot izaugsmi, Budas klātbūtni pasaulē vairoja ar trafaretiem. Tiek uzskatīts, ka tieši Ķīnā izgudrots trafareta siets. Te gan būtu jāuzsver, ka šī sieta, drīzāk jau tīkla, tehnoloģiskā ideja bija atšķirīga no šodien zināmās sietspiedes. Atkarībā no sieta blīvuma, to var panākt no 8 līdz pat 1000 mikrometriem biezu.
From Billboard to Soul Train to the Grammys, each year, the music industry recognizes the extraordinary work of musicians, writers and artists with exclusive awards. To win a Grammy, for example, carries a prestige that instantly verifies a creative as a legitimate talent. Even just being nominated carries significant weight. But how legit are these awards nowadays and how fair is the process of selecting the winners?

It is a great honor we present an interview with an artist known for both his solo records and his guitar session work. Larry Carlton is one of the greatest guitarists alive. If you think this is an exaggeration, maybe you should see him in concert. This interview with Mr. Carlton was recorded prior to one of his concerts in Atlanta, Georgia. He was performing a pair of shows on the same night at the Sambuca restaurant in Buckhead. Sambuca is sadly no longer there. While still touring with the Crusaders, he contributed as a guitar session player to albums from Sammy Davis, Jr., Herb Alpert, Quincy Jones, Paul Anka, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, and Jerry Garcia just to name a few. Over time, Larry Carlton appeared on over 3,000 studio sessions. His accomplishments are many. He has written and co-written theme songs for TV shows including the hit sitcom "Who's the Boss?" and the drama "Hill Street Blues." From the transcript:Today for Episode 28, I’m delighted to have with me Dr Naras Eechambadi, who’s an expert in the use of data science and analytics to drive marketing. This is relevant because the majority of startups fail not because of poor or inappropriate technology but lack of innovative and creative marketing. But Naras’ personal journey through management consulting and the two startups he founded, grew and exited honorably from, is also very interesting. Let me quickly go through his bio: engineering at IIT Madras to a doctorate in marketing at UT Austin to a leading ad agency (BBDO) to management consulting at Booz Allen and McKinsey; a senior executive at First Union, and then a successful serial entrepreneur. And an adjunct faculty at Berkeley, U Connecticut, Yale, Duke, North Carolina. On his career journey, the importance of networking, and the common threadMy network has always been invaluable in helping me either find opportunities or have the opportunities find me… At UT, Austin I made friends with a number of doctoral students and faculty in the marketing department and they convinced me to change my major from Operations Research to Marketing. I am really glad I made that shift. I love analytics and marketing and that has indeed been a common thread throughout my varied career and roles. How companies are making the transition from services to products/platformsTwo great examples of companies right here in Chennai that have done [that] successfully are Zoho and FreshDesk. I think we will see more of these in the future. How he managed good exits from both the startups be foundedFortunately for us, the acquiring company was not impacted by the financial crisis and they felt our company fit a strategic need. So the acquisition driven by strategic rather than financial considerations. They made us a very generous offer and stuck with it even while the markets were imploding all around us [in 2008] … The second company i built was in the same space but it was a software platform. The pandemic hit some of our clients hard right at the beginning, which impacted our business. Fortunately, we were in a very attractive space and were able to generate multiple offers to buy the company and manage a decent exit [in 2020]. On consumer-centered marketing in IndiaBecause this is still an emerging, growth market most companies are still riding the wave through traditional mass marketing and mass media approaches. Most B2C companies in this market are still not data savvy. They really do not know who their best customers are, so do not really treat them differently. Their knowledge is often limited to mobile phone numbers and email addresses. They use these channels to bombard their customers and prospects alike with often irrelevant offers and messages. Data and customer insight are still an afterthought. Companies that decide to take it seriously will be able to build great businesses in the future. On prospects in India, and Asia more broadlyThere is a palpable energy, positive attitude and infectious optimism among people here, not just in tech but across the board India and Asia are still at the initial stages of a broader renaissance. On his immediate future plansI do enjoy mentoring and advising entrepreneurs and senior executives in larger companies. I am starting to connect with the local startup ecosystem in Chennai, particularly those linked to IITM Research Park. I look forward to engaging actively with them. This is a public episode. We have a great interview with a great musician (which is standard if you’ve been listening) and then I have a special treat for you at the end, where I dig into some archival tape and we’ll hear a bit of very candid talk by Carmen McRae. So stay tuned for that.Angela Parrish likes to describe her stuff as “new music for old souls” and it fits. She’s originally from Newton, Kansas, where she started early with piano and viola lessons, children’s chorus and high school choir, later graduating from Wichita State University and has a master’s degree in jazz piano from the University of Northern Colorado. Then she showed up in LA with $700 in her pocket, where she stuck it out from sleeping in her car to singing the opening lines of the movie La La Land. We get into all the layers of her story in the interview, and her songwriting is just incredible. Stay tuned for tastes of that underneath.Click PLAY above to hear my interview with Angela ParrishALSO: want to have a zoom meeting with her? She’s immortal among jazz singers:I’m gonna try something new here, please let me know what you think of it by writing in as you so often do. I envision this show as a weekly dose of connection and inspiring music talk, and we have an amazing population of contemporaries who I’ll never ever get through the supply of.But back in 1989 Joe Smith, who had been president of three major labels, published a book called "Off The Record" which was an oral history of the music business featuring over 200 interviews with iconic singers, musicians and industry figures to talk about their lives and their music. The book came out, everyone said it was great. It's an amazing artifact. But then in 2012 he took it up a notch and donated his entire set of unedited sound recordings to the Library of Congress. You can go check out the Joe Smith Collection (link in the show notes) and be a fly on the wall as Joe hangs with all the greats and boy does he get them to open up. All types of popular music are represented — it's a who's who from rock ‘n' roll, jazz, rhythm & blues and pop to big-band, heavy metal, folk and country-western. Thanks to the generosity of Joe Smith and the Library of Congress, the archive is available to use, and I’ve gone through it to find my favorite bits. I’m gonna let them all play in a row here for you at the end of the show. So let’s spend a little time with Carmen McRae. We need to know and remember our musical ancestors. There's a little chop in the tape where it skips a bit where she's mentioning Ronny Milsap... but you’ll catch on. It's an incredible story about how she resigned in protest from NARAS which runs the grammys, but did it TWICE. Two years in a row. There’s all kinds of other juice about how she toured, how she came together as an artist… I won’t tell you everything. Just listen. The questions all come from Joe Smith and I’ve tightened it up quite a bit for you so they get right to the point. The LOC Joe Smith Collection: https://www.loc.gov/collections/joe-smith/Press PLAY above to hear the whole episodeThanks for listening to Play It Like It’s Music.
