What happens when academic research, climate resilience, digital inclusion and community development all collide? In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent is joined by Vicki Ayton, Founder of BizEd, a Community Interest Company (CIC) that exists to bridge the gap between research and real-world community impact. What started as a response to a local library closure has evolved into a growing community hub delivering digital inclusion support, climate resilience education, research projects and policy work across Shropshire and beyond. Vicki shares the realities of building a sustainable CIC, the challenges of balancing commercial income with social impact, and why digital skills are now fundamental to both business success and community resilience. In This Episode From Research to Real Impact Vicki explains how her background in climate and environmental research highlighted a common challenge: excellent research often fails to reach the people who need it most. BizEd was created to translate knowledge into practical support for communities and businesses. A pivotal moment came when the local council approached BizEd to replace services lost when a library closed due to RAAC concrete concerns. That request became the catalyst for creating a physical community hub. Why BizEd Chose a CIC Structure One of the most fascinating discussions centres around the decision to become a Community Interest Company rather than a charity. Vicki explains: Why financial resilience matters for community organisations How BizEd generates 60–70% of its income through trading activities The dangers of becoming overly reliant on grant funding How organisations can lose community trust when grant-funded projects disappear The CIC model provides greater flexibility to trade and generate sustainable income, helping create long-term impact rather than short-term projects. The CIC Catch-22 The conversation highlights a significant challenge faced by many social enterprises. While CICs are encouraged to trade and become self-sustaining, they are often excluded from support programmes available only to registered charities. Examples include: Free software licences Digital infrastructure grants Technology support programmes Meanwhile, charities often have access to these benefits but face restrictions on how much income they can generate through trading activities. It's a structural challenge that many social enterprises continue to face. Climate Resilience is a Business Issue Climate change is no longer a future concern. Vicki explains why businesses need to focus on resilience today, including: Managing disruption caused by extreme weather Protecting supply chains Supporting employee wellbeing during heatwaves Preparing for changing customer and community needs Rather than focusing solely on sustainability, businesses must also prepare for adaptation and resilience. Digital Skills are Now Essential A major theme throughout the conversation is the importance of digital capability at every level. Vicki breaks digital skills into three areas: Foundation Skills Email Online services Digital communication Accessing information safely Workplace Skills Productivity software Collaboration tools Digital workflows Data management Advanced Skills Artificial Intelligence AI risk management Data analysis Automation opportunities She also highlights the growing overlap between green jobs and digital capability, where data and technology skills are becoming increasingly valuable. Why Young People May Hold the AI Advantage For many small businesses, hiring experienced AI specialists isn't realistic. Vicki argues that younger people often bring natural AI fluency and experimentation skills that SMEs can benefit from immediately. For owner-managers looking to improve productivity, younger team members may already hold valuable expertise that businesses are overlooking. Building Community Hubs That Actually Work One of BizEd's biggest lessons is that community needs rarely exist in isolation. Someone seeking digital support may also need: Benefits advice Banking assistance Employment support Access to other local services Vicki shares her vision for integrated community hubs that bring multiple services together under one roof, making support more accessible and effective. Productivity Tools and Personal Effectiveness Despite operating in a highly digital world, Vicki's favourite productivity tool is surprisingly simple. Her trusted Busy Bee physical diary remains the cornerstone of her planning system. The discussion explores: Why writing things down improves thinking Managing the overlap between work and home life The importance of finding tools that suit your working style BizEd itself takes a tool-agnostic approach, using Trello, Notion, Planner and other platforms depending on team and client preferences. The focus is on removing barriers to collaboration rather than enforcing a single system. The One Key Thing Building sustainable impact requires balancing purpose with commercial reality. The organisations that create lasting change are the ones that develop the resilience to generate income while staying true to their mission. Standout Quote "Digital skills are no longer optional. They are the foundation of resilience for individuals, communities and businesses alike." About Vicki Ayton Vicki Ayton is the Founder of BizEd, a Community Interest Company focused on climate resilience, digital inclusion, research translation and community impact. Through education, community engagement and policy work, BizEd helps bridge the gap between knowledge and practical action. Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. Busy Bees is on a mission to reclaim storytime as a joyful experience that fosters a love of reading from the very beginning. Families are invited to join in, rediscovering the enjoyment of reading at home together and helping children to reach this momentous milestone. What does it actually take to run a successful play café once you're past the opening phase—especially when your space is larger than most independent, non-franchise-chain locations? In this episode of the Profitable Play Podcast, I sit down with Kristina Lai, owner of Busy Bee Play Cafe in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their 8,500+ sq ft facility is on the larger side for a non-chain indoor playground business, which brings its own unique challenges and advantages. On the challenge side, a larger space means a bigger team (often with a high number of teenage staff), higher capacity to manage, more moving parts operationally, and the ability—and pressure—to run a high volume of birthday parties every single week. On the flip side, that size also creates real opportunities: multiple parties running at once, diversified revenue streams beyond open play, a full balloon bar, stronger café potential, and more flexibility in how the business actually makes money. In this conversation, Kristina shares a candid, behind-the-scenes look at how she navigates both sides of that equation. We cover:...Operating a larger independent play café without franchise systems...Managing a large, mostly teenage team in peak seasons...Running a high volume of birthday parties each week—and why systems matter...Hosting multiple parties at the same time without overwhelming staff or guests...Real revenue breakdowns: open play, parties, memberships, café sales, retail, and balloons...Building a profitable balloon business after Party City closures...Using reservations and memberships to control capacity in a high-traffic space...When memberships attract the wrong families—and how to handle it...Letting go of problem members and employees (and why some money isn't worth it)...Launching hot food in a play café without turning it into a full restaurant...The emotional toll of running a large play business and being “always on call”...How ownership impacts family life when your kids grow up alongside the businessThis episode is especially helpful if you:...Own or are planning on opening a play café or indoor playground...Are considering (or already running) a larger-than-average independent space...Run frequent birthday parties and want better systems...Want multiple revenue streams without burning out...Are managing staffing, capacity, or boundaries
Today's girls are growing up in a culture that glorifies hustle—and it's leaving them exhausted. From academics to athletics, friendships to faith commitments, many daughters are running on empty long before adulthood. Is busyness shaping their identity more than God's truth? In this episode of the Raising Godly Girls Podcast, co-hosts Rachael Culpepper and Melissa Bearden tackle the silent epidemic of burnout among girls. With honesty, humor, and Biblical wisdom, they share how nonstop schedules can rob girls of peace and distort their sense of worth—and how parents can push back with rhythms of rest. You'll also hear American Heritage Girls Founder & Executive Director Emeritus Patti Garibay deliver a powerful Raising Godly Girls Minute on the “Busy Bee” trap and the freedom that comes with Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” Together, the conversation points to a better way: teaching our girls that rest is not laziness, but obedience. That saying “no” can be an act of trust. And that their value is not measured by their productivity, but by their identity in Christ. If your daughter is running hard—or if your own schedule feels like it's running you—this episode will help you breathe deeply, hit pause, and rediscover the beauty of a slower, Spirit-led life. This Week's Reminders: Her schedule should serve her, not control her Rest is a spiritual discipline, not a reward You set the tone she learns to live by Scripture References: Psalm 46:10 Explore more resources to raise girls rooted in Christ at raisinggodlygirls.com. Layoffs don't just take our jobs. They can scramble our judgment. Here's how to get both back.An entrepreneur on my podcast told me this story:“When I went bankrupt, I begged a friend, who had built a unicorn, for a meeting. He gave me 30 minutes. But the moment we sat down, I could tell he wanted to leave.Six months later, after I'd worked on myself, I went back with clarity and energy. This time, he introduced me to people and offered support. What I learned was simple: if you go to people with negative, desperate energy, you pull them down. But if you show up with direction and passion, they go out of their way to help.”That's the Busy Bee trap. When layoffs hit, many of us cope by throwing ourselves into endless activity - networking calls, resume blasts, constant LinkedIn posts. It feels like progress. But it's often just frantic energy that pushes people away.Because action is not the same as movement.Action is visible busyness. Running hard, but often in circles.Movement starts inside. Small, invisible shifts - restoring our headspace, processing what happened, finding clarity. That inner shift moves us forward far more than 100 frantic actions.Because once our headspace shifts, our actions carry real power. The real challenge during a layoff: managing our headspace while clarifying what we want. When we do this systematically, we give ourselves the best chance to succeed. We dive deeper into this in today's episode.Shownoteshttps://howtolive.life/episode/101-bouncing-back-after-layoff-with-Sharad-LalFor Folks Affected by Restructuring4 Week Career Transition Program. https://www.sharadlal.net/thrivethroughtransition How to Live NewsletterGo deeper with articles every 2-3 weeks. Episode Synopsis: What is the fate of Craigsville, Virginia after a prison closed in the small, rural town? We're envisioning the future of Craigsville and investigating how decarcerating the economy can become a win for all. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: What happens to a small town when a prison shuts down? The Augusta Correctional Center employed many residents and brought business to Craigsville, Virginia, a two square-mile, 900-person town located in the Shenandoah Valley. But when the prison closed in the summer of 2024 with minimal warning and no time for planning, Craigsville residents and the town's economy were hit hard. In this special report, Laura Flanders & Friends correspondents Chelsea Higgs Wise and Lewis Raven Wallace head to Craigsville to learn about how the town is struggling, possible solutions from locals, and the larger questions around our country's prison industrial complex. How can small, rural communities be supported in a sustainable transition away from a carceral economy? Join us as we envision the future of Craigsville and investigate how decarcerating the economy can become a win for all. Chelsea Higgs Wise is a community organizer based in Richmond, Virginia whose work focuses on empowering Black communities economically and educationally. She is co-founder and director of Marijuana Justice, a Black-led organization established to repair the harms of the drug war. Durham, North Carolina-based Lewis Raven Wallace is an independent journalist, author, and the Abolition Journalism Fellow at Interrupting Criminalization. Plus, a commentary from Laura on what could happen to the Augusta Correctional Center under the Trump administration.“At one point there were 43 institutions in the Virginia Departments of Corrections . . . That number has dramatically decreased as a result of measures put in place, such as incentive credits, the juvenile parole bill, and other pieces of legislation that helped sentencing.” - Sincere Allah“What I would say is that building these prisons has not changed communities. It hasn't helped people inside. It hasn't helped create all these amazing jobs . . . Instead of investing $1.5 billion in our prisons, parole, probation, what if that was invested in communities?” - Margaret Breslau“Augusta Correctional opened in 1985. Probably at least half of the population here was working over there at that time. And it boosted the community greatly . . , boosted the town operational costs also. Kind of devastating for them to leave.” - Richard L. Fox“There's a gorgeous gym in [the prison] that is just full of equipment that these young people could very much get something out of. There's a beautiful library in there. There's two ball fields there. There's plenty of office space. It could be turned into a lot of things.” - Tracy MartinCorrespondents:• Lewis Raven Wallace: Journalist & Activist, Durham, North Carolina• Chelsea Higgs Wise: Journalist & Policy Advocate, Richmond, VirginiaGuests:• Sincere Allah: State Organizer, REFORM Alliance• Margaret Breslau: Co-Founder, Virginia Prison Justice Network• Pam L.
