Vores dampskib blev slynget op paa Afrikas kyst som en døddrukken flodhest. Jeg vadede i land iført mit fineste tweed og et blik, der signalerede staalsat inkompetence. Ingen modtog mig. Kun en død ged og et skilt: “VELKOMMEN TIL AFRIKA – VI ANBEFALER HAT OG NERVEMEDICIN.”     Første observation: Afrika er uforholdsmæssigt varmt, uigennemskueligt og anerkender mestendels ikke gemen bordskik. Jeg udpegede derfor straks kontinentet som fjendtligt. Fire dage senere, et sted syd for Khartoum, var min hest død af varme og anger. Min sidste daase-pølse var fortæret, og kortet jeg havde købt i Antwerpen viste sig muligvis at være bagsiden af en vinmenu fra Holland-Amerika-linjen. Mit kompas snurrede som en gal tepotte. Jeg begyndte at gaa.     Side 16 - Under paraventen: En gentleman bekender sin angst Paa ottendedagen, et sted mellem et udtørret flodleje og min sidste pibe Capstan Navy Cut, hørte jeg stemmer. Ikke inde i hovedet denne gang – virkelige stemmer. Jeg fandt ham i skyggen af et akacietræ. Han kaldte sig Sonny, og tilbød mig et stykke tørret kød, som jeg senere opdagede var hans dagbog. Han førte mig til en teltlejr, hvor man var i færd med at bygge en jernbane. Jeg bemærkede straks fraværet af enhver form for sikkerhedsprotokol, samt det faktum at lejren havde et foruroligende misforhold mellem levende og døde arbejdere. Brølet kom ved skumring. To skabninger. Løver, ja, men med manér som mordere. De bevægede sig lydløst mellem teltene. Jeg naaede akkurat at høre en jæger, med krop som en whiskyflaske og en stemme af kogt læder, sige: “‘The Ghost and the Darkness' (1996).” Jeg flygtede gennem lejren, der stank af imperiel arrogance og løvepis, og gemte mig under en dynge kongolesiske paraventer, der var malet med scener fra et bedre liv. Den smagte af symbolisme… og kardemomme.     Side 77 - På feltfod med Den Glødende Kossak (Notater fra fronten) Til sidst krydsede jeg en grænse (moralsk, forstås) og mødte Lord St. John-Paridon. En mand for hvem sort krudt var et krydderi. Han sagde ikke meget, men duftede svagt af kampvognsolie og propaganda. Uden varsel kastede han mig op i en hestekærre holdt sammen af patronhylstre og patriotisme og satte kursen durk mod flammehavet ‘Red Scorpion' (1988), hvor en højrøstet kossak ved navn Dolph Lundgren skinnede som en babyolieret obelisk midt i et opbrust hav af stridende indfødte. Jeg kastede op af respekt ved synet af Zarens glinsende barbar, som han stod der i modlyset fra den dræbende sol med vodka i aarerne og bly i blikket. Han udnævnte mig overraskende til feltpræst, og jeg døbte omgående en bærbar artillerifløjlskanon, mens officererne istemte med salmer, og en uralsk pansersavant forsøgte at forhandle med en hest. Vi passerede gennem kampzoner, hvor lastbiler eksploderede af stolthed og Dolphs anmasende viljestyrke fik selv baobabtræerne til at gribe til vaaben. En tank forsøgte at kapitulere, men blev omgaaende overtalt til at eksplodere i stedet. Jeg red bort paa trykbølgen, ud mod horisonten, som en gentleman paa en galopperende flaske Zanzibar-gin.      Kapitlet uden hvilket intet ville være muligt Jeg maa, med løvernes brøl endnu rungende i kraniet og en mild hjernebetændelse bag brillen, nedfælde min dybeste tak til jer – medlemmer af den hæderkronede Klub Moviebox. Jeres bidrag er som portvinen i mit glas: sød, klinisk nødvendig og til tider eksplosiv. Uden jeres rundhaandede støtte maatte jeg finansiere ekspeditionerne gennem ulovlige visninger af ‘Crocodile Dundee II' paa en opsprættet mulepose i det vestlige Zambia, eller bytte The Moviebox Collection-videoer mod myggenet og malaria-piller ved kontinentets mange uforudsigelige grænseposter. Det er jer, der gør det muligt for mig at bære tropehjelm med værdighed, og fortsætte disse svimlende cineastiske odysséer uden kompas, kort eller samvittighed, i jagten paa film, som kun vinden, Peter Peter og muligvis tordenguden Shango kender. Epilog Og saaledes slutter beretningen om vores prøvelser og pinsler paa det Afrikanske kontinent. En rejse med løver, dæmoner og eksploderende lastbiler. Hvad lærte vi? Maaske intet. Maaske alt. On August 8, 2020, Jamal “Shango” James became the World Boxing Association Welterweight Champion. The win gave Shango the same title and belt previously held by boxing icons like Tommy Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. In this interview, Shango discusses the incredible physical and mental resilience required to make a living as a professional boxer. A native of Minneapolis, Shango shares how he endured the pandemic that disrupted his career and the social unrest when George Floyd was murdered just blocks from where he lives and trains. He talks about what it was like to become a world champion winning the WBA Welterweight title and he candidly shares how he felt when he lost the title 15 months later. Shango also talks about his commitment to helping young people and how representing his family and community fuel him to pursue the title again. A new father, Shango closes the interview with how he would like to help his son develop resilience as he grows up. When he was just aged five, Jamal “Shango” James made his first visit to a boxing gym. From that day forward, he was hooked. As an amateur boxer, he fought more than 100 bouts and turned pro winning his first match on May 22, 2010. He went on to win his first 20 professional bouts and has amassed a 28-2 professional record. In August of 2020, after months of waiting through the pandemic for his first chance at a title fight, Shango became a world champion with his victory over Thomas Dulorme in Los Angeles. David Boothman, one of 6 siblings, is a celebrated composer, artist, musician, and educator, currently serves as Master Artist in Residence at the University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT), and the chairman of Caribbean Renaissance Foundation, founded 8/2012 -  which is a fusion of creative entities plowing the ground for a cultural revitalization and the re-invention of the Caribbean identity; an innovative strategic engine creating the platform for a proactive and inter- active transformation of culture, education and tourism; shaping the future of an integrated Caribbean by preserving its heritage, through the advancement of the arts, science, education, culture and tourism; and highlighting the war heroes who brought pride to and beyond to its shores  - has been involved in the arts for over 45 years. "Booty/Ze Boots" comes from a family of artists and musicians. His uncles, Boscoe and Geoffrey Holder, are two of the best known artists from the Caribbean.Two of his brothers, Michael and Roger are also awarded artists and musicians. David attended Queen's Royal College in Trinidad and won a scholarship to Pratt Institute, New York, to study Art and became an honor graduate of the institute. In addition to being a top artist, David is also an accomplished Jazz pianist and composer. He moved to the United States in 1996 where he managed several bands. The band “Family Tree'' consisting of the Boothman brothers which later included the steelpan prodigy teenager, Len “Boogsie” Sharp and other wonderful artists, toured with Derek Walcott's Trinidad Theatre Workshop including Andre Tanker, the great Trinidadian flutist of the time, as well as international Jazz and Caribbean music festivals. David is the founder of CAJE Caribbean Art Jazz Ensemble and Founder/Director of the Caribbean Arts Central and Transcendental Caribbean. As a composer, artist, musician and educator, he has received numerous awards for arts in education and multi-media arts production in Trinidad and the US. In 1980, he was awarded a government scholarship through the Prime Minister's Best Village. Boothman has written and produced soundtracks for documentaries, composed jingles and has performed and recorded with Caribbean-performing leading artists. His paintings have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum, OAS, the National Museum in Dallas, Texas, as well international corporate buildings in Europe and Latin America. His works have been published in several publications, including  the Musical America International Directory of Performing Art annually and the International Review of African American Art.  "As a colorist, I am moved by color relationships, the subtleties of texture, nuances of line and shape, creating forms from abstract to figurative, from impressionism to cubism, from expression to quasi-realism." This is the Olympian's first encounter with the violent vigilante. Mettle takes a meeting with Shango, the reformed gang leader of the Fallen Angles. Mettle will fund the purchase of a building in Elmview and he wants Shango and his crew to run a trade school for the disenfranchised there. Shango says he will believe it when he sees it. On Monday Olympian goes to Fordhem ChemTech to make a security assessment of the facility with Phillip Madhur, FBEE. A Dr. Janet Shane takes them on a tour of the facility. Opening his production account in 2019 on Pipe and Pochet, Socko is now signed to several influential labels including Behrouz' Do Not Sit, Shango and down. Opening with two tracks featuring Romanian artist IV-IN, ‘Queen Is An Eagle' a low- slung, nu-disco vibe saunters with bluesy vocals. Rubber band guitar licks and sleazy keys provide musical asides as the track gathers momentum midway before an oasis of a break and chunky conclusion. Next up ‘Ghost is Not Human' continues apace with nuanced guitars forming the low end, and moody keys punctuating the sombre male vocals. Organ lines midway add energy and interest. Finally, with the vocal talents of D'Litte, the EP draws to a close with ‘Red Wet Dress'. Ticking clock percussion and sweet vocals juxtapose in the most delightful way as a disturbing mutated siren signals the introduction of bass and tension. A thoroughly classy and creatively complex debut for an artist on the cusp of worldwide notoriety.
