In this episode, we explore the history of Page 3, one of the most controversial and enduring features of British tabloid culture. Introduced in The Sun newspaper in 1970, Page 3 became synonymous with topless glamour models, capturing both the public's fascination and fury. From its roots as a cheeky addition to the paper to its evolution into a cultural flashpoint, we unravel how this feature both reflected and shaped societal attitudes towards women, sexuality, and media ethics. We discuss the era when Page 3 dominated British popular culture, with models like Samantha Fox and Linda Lusardi becoming household names. At its height, Page 3 was a symbol of 70s and 80s hedonism, celebrated for its playful irreverence but equally criticized for its reductive portrayal of women. This episode takes a closer look at how the feature blurred the lines between empowerment and objectification, sparking fierce debates that continue to resonate today. The backlash against Page 3 is also a major focus, particularly the rise of feminist campaigns like No More Page 3, which galvanized public opinion and led to its eventual decline. We examine how changing societal values, media trends, and the advent of the internet forced a reevaluation of such content and whether the tabloid icon still has a place in modern Britain. Finally, we reflect on the broader implications of Page 3's legacy, from its impact on gender politics to its role in the evolution of media sensationalism. Whether you see it as an emblem of freedom or a relic of misogyny, there's no denying that Page 3 left a mark on British culture. Join us as we dissect its rise, fall, and enduring controversy. Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's. We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different. However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge. Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall. Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it. So, what's new? Another fun episode. Enjoy. LADYLIKE - Die Podcast-Show: Der Talk über Sex, Liebe & Erotik
Die beiden Podcasterinnen Yvonne und Nicole sprechen in dieser neuen Ladylike-Folge über ein Thema, das bei jedem eine Assoziation hervorruft, aber das die beiden noch nie besprochen haben: Sexsymbole. Was sind klassische Sexsymbole?

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, hosts Charles and Doug welcome Jim, known as the Podcast Sherpa and host of Too Many Podcasts, a podcast dedicated to exploring other podcasts. Jim shares his unique experiences attending various concerts, beginning with his first concert in 1980, where he saw The Police at Madison Square Garden during their Zenyatta Mondatta tour. He reminisces about the electrifying atmosphere and how the concert left a lasting impression on him as a high school student. The discussion also touches on other memorable shows, including Tina Turner's powerful performance as the opening act for Lionel Richie in 1984, where her high-energy stage presence captivated the audience. Jim also recalls seeing Elton John at Madison Square Garden during the Leather Jackets tour in 1986 and dispels a rumor about the singer allegedly assaulting a fan. He goes on to describe the experience of attending Billy Joel's record-setting 12 Gardens residency at Madison Square Garden, which also happened to be his wife's first concert, highlighting the shared joy of live music. The conversation takes a humorous turn as Jim recounts some lighter concert memories, including a prank involving "pre-concert mooing" at a Joan Jett concert in 1983 and a surprising encounter at a Samantha Fox show in 1989. Charles and Doug also share their own concert anecdotes, with Doug emphasizing the consistent quality of Billy Joel's performances and Charles recalling a chaotic food fight during a Joan Jett set at a Police concert. The episode is filled with entertaining stories and insights, reflecting the hosts' and guest's deep appreciation for live music and the unforgettable moments that concerts create.BANDS: Bare Naked Ladies, Billy Joel, Clint Black, Coolio, Elton John, Joan Jett, Lionel Richie, Prince, Samantha Fox, Sheila E, The Police, Tina Turner, Wynonna Judd.VENUES: Jones Beach, Madison Square Garden, Manchester Apollo, Orpheum Capitol Theater, The Marquee Club. 3D Modelling Scam! Who wants a life-size Samantha Fox! Ip or not IP, that is the question! Vlad the Beluga! Short one this week because Rossy (Arthur Wrightus) has to leave for his bus!
He was one of the three bullies (Pee Wee) in the movie House Party. He and his 2 brothers along with their cousins formed the group Full Force in the 80's, they went on to write and produce for several artists including, James Brown, The Backstreet Boys, Lisa Lisa and The Cultjam, Latina artist Selena, Samantha Fox, UTFO and more.
So, here's my idea for a music festival: REM, ABC, ELO, and NWA, and we'll call it "The Spelling Bee." (Please, "Alphabet Soup" was too obvious.) I wonder if my guests would go to that? The ticket stub would look interesting, anyway. But Charles and Doug have interesting stories and memorabilia for their show, and if you're an avid concert- goer, you'll appreciate the stories that get told. I actually have some true-life concert stories myself, that I didn't get to mention, like the "beret incident" at Samantha Fox(* unofficially pronounced "Suh-suh-suh-suh Samantha FOX!) and the "mooing" challenge at Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. (Sadly, I'm not joking..). But check out their show-it's definitely a tribute to live music. While sadly, I cannot assemble a solo kazoo tour. Anyway, thanks for coming on the show, guys! pWotD Episode 2603: Page 3 Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 589,276 views on Monday, 17 June 2024 our article of the day is Page 3.Page 3, or Page Three, was a British newspaper convention of publishing a large image of a topless female glamour model (known as a Page 3 girl) on the third page of mainstream red top tabloids. The Sun introduced the feature in November 1970, which boosted its readership and prompted competing tabloids—including The Daily Mirror, The Sunday People, and The Daily Star—to begin featuring topless models on their own third pages. Well-known Page 3 models included Linda Lusardi, Samantha Fox, Debee Ashby, Maria Whittaker, Katie Price, Keeley Hazell, and Jakki Degg.Although Page 3's defenders portrayed it as a harmless British cultural tradition, the feature was controversial throughout its history, drawing criticism both from conservatives, who tended to view it as softcore pornography inappropriate for inclusion in national newspapers, and feminists, who argued that Page 3 objectified women's bodies, negatively affected girls' and women's body image, and perpetuated sexism. Some politicians, most notably Clare Short and Caroline Lucas, campaigned to have Page 3 images banned from newspapers, although other politicians, including Nick Clegg and Ed Vaizey, expressed concern that such a ban would compromise press freedom. The British government never enacted legislation against Page 3, although activists in 2012 launched the No More Page 3 campaign with the goal of persuading newspaper editors and owners to end the feature voluntarily. In February 2013, Rupert Murdoch, owner of The Sun, suggested that Page 3 could become a "halfway house", featuring glamour photographs without showing nudity. In August of that year, The Sun's Republic of Ireland edition replaced topless Page 3 girls with clothed glamour models. The Sun's UK print editions followed suit in January 2015, discontinuing Page 3 after more than 44 years. The Sun's official Page 3 website ceased publishing new content in March 2017 and was taken offline the following year. In April 2019, The Daily Star became the last print daily to move to a clothed glamour format, ending the Page 3 convention in Britain's mainstream tabloid press. As of 2023, the only British tabloid still publishing topless models is the niche Sunday Sport. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:51 UTC on Tuesday, 18 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Page 3 on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ivy Neural.

I've been wanting to do a Freestyle mixtape for a while now. I have cool memories of this music booming out of little Suzuki Samurais and Honda Civics in the late '80s during family vacations to the East and West Coasts. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of archived radio DJ mixes from the late '80s and was inspired to pull together some tasty Rap, Freestyle, Electro, Post-Disco, and House for this tape. I only recently became aware of the original version of 'Show Me Love' and found an unopened copy on Discogs, so the version at the end of this set is a genuine needle drop. A brief introduction to the Freestyle genre: Emerging in the early 1980s in the United States and originating in the urban Latino communities of New York City and Miami, Freestyle was characterized by a blend of synthesizer and drum-heavy electronic beats, Latin percussion, and emotive, often dramatic singing. Notable artists include Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Stevie B, and Exposé. Internationally, the impact of Freestyle was more nuanced. In Europe, while synth-pop, new wave, and house music were more dominant, elements of Freestyle influenced the emerging Eurodance scene. Meanwhile, in Japan, Freestyle was overshadowed by genres like J-Pop and city pop, along with various other forms of Western music. While its core fanbase resided in cities like New York and Miami, Freestyle's popularity was embraced in club scenes nationwide and received considerable radio play, particularly on urban contemporary, dance, and R&B stations during its peak in the late 1980s. This era marked the height of Freestyle's run in the charts with songs like 'Fascinated' by Company B, 'Crush on You' by The Jets, 'Point of No Return' by Exposé, 'Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)' by Samantha Fox, and 'Tell It to My Heart' by Taylor Dayne. Freestyle's influence persisted into the early '90s, notably in Eurodance with international hit songs like 'Rhythm of the Night' by Corona and 'Be My Lover' by La Bouche, which exhibited similarly catchy choruses and uptempo rhythms, but with much denser and slicker production. While in the Latin music scene, especially in the early to mid-1990s, Latin Freestyle, a subgenre, saw artists like Selena infusing traditional Latin sounds with Freestyle's electronic beats and rhythms. Freestyle remains a distinctive and memorable part of 1980s music culture, representing a unique fusion of sounds that captured the energy and diversity of its era. Fantasy 3 - It's Your Rock Pretty Tony - Fix It in the Mix Freestyle - Don't Stop the Rock Trinere - How Can We Be Wrong Sequal - It's Not Too Late Jennette - You Turn Me On Olga - Play Another Song for Me Pretty Poison - Nightime Newtrament - London Bridge is Falling Down (Dub Mix) Beat Street - Breaker's Revenge Bohannon - Let's Start the Dance III (Instrumental Club) Patrice Rushen - Number One (Instrumental Version) N.O.I.A. - The Rule to Survive Import #1 - Set It Off (Party Rock) Connie - Rock Me Lidell Townsell, M T F - Nu Nu (Radio Apella) Robin Stone - Show Me Love (New York Mix) If you're listening on Apple Podcasts, please shoot me a quick 5-star rating, and a positive review if you're feeling generous. It was a typical room for a teenage boy in the 1980s; football programmes on his desk with his homework, a well-used Amstrad HI-FI system with a tape cassette and radio, used to record the top chart hits on a Sunday, hitting the pause button before the DJ fades back in. Posters of his favourite musical acts covered the walls; Mel and Kim, T'Pau, Madonna, Samantha Fox — standard fare in 1988. His single bed, pushed against the wall of his cosy room, with his black pyjama bottoms tucked neatly under his pillow to wear the next night, but there would not be a next night…THIS EPISODE WAS PUBLISHED IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM ON DECEMBER 2nd, 2020. *** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Rosanna Fitton. As this episode goes live, registration for Create Your Program is open. This is my process to help you create and launch your signature program beyond private practice. If you'd like to start growing another part of your business and make money in a new way, this is the best time to jump into Create Your Program. If you register by Sunday, January 7th, you're going to get lifetime access to a bonus training that has helped grads of CYP to fill their programs. Go to https://rebeltherapist.me/create now to register. I can't wait to see you inside. Today I want to talk about a few really important things that set apart the people who launch programs and succeed from those who wish they had. Here are 3 things people who succeed with their programs are WILLING to do. 1: Be willing to work through discomfort in your marketing. My last guest, Samantha Fox, is great at this. Just like most people who sign up to work with me, Samantha was really nervous about getting more visible and sharing her work with large audiences. Her program is called Unbox Your Sexuality. She helps women all over the world who are realizing they are not as straight as they thought they were. She had to work through her discomfort with being known as a queer thought leader. A few years later, she's so glad she did! She's constantly creating content, including videos, and sharing it with people all over the world. She's guested on about 20 podcasts and gotten comfortable using her voice in that way. She gets to hear from people she's never met about how much her work has changed their lives. So even though she is an introvert and she used to be afraid of visibility, she's now a very public leader who feels abundant love and energy for the people who find her from all over the planet. 2: Be willing to talk about your program with a lot of enthusiasm, and ask people to help you share it. Thing is something that the prior guest, Sonya Brewer, knows how to do! This one sounds obvious, but asking for help is NOT natural or easy for many folks who sign up to work with me. Sonya said that she shared the news about her program, badass boundaries for trauma survivors, with everyone she knows. She asked people: “Who do you have for me?” Sonya was able to do this because she knows her program is excellent. She sees the transformations her participants are able to make, and so she's willing to spread the word. Many people start to shrink or hide or even apologize when it's time to sell their programs. Even if this doesn't come easily to you, I know that you CAN learn to ask for referrals with enthusiasm! I used to shrink when it was time to talk about my work, and now I ask for referrals with ease. I no longer feel like hiding how awesome I know Create Your Program is. I've iterated it over 28 times. I've worked over 200 therapists through it. I've worked with a curriculum designer. We've got the best expert guest teachers who come in and teach particular vital things. CYP has grads like Sonya and Samantha and so many others who have created SO much value. Now when I talk about Create Your Program, I exude a lot of enthusiasm. I also don't care any longer if some folks don't like me because of my confidence. For every person who feels annoyed at my confidence, there are a few people who are encouraged to be a bit more confident themselves. So follow Sonya's lead and shout your program from the rooftops.
Samantha has shrunk her therapy practice way down and is no longer taking new therapy clients. She's delighted that her business has transitioned to mostly her coaching programs. She's found that she's got abundant energy and love for serving in this way. AND…Samantha has discovered that even the free stuff she provides on social media and on her site helps many queer women live truer lives. That's just ONE of the ways that the work she's doing now is a much better fit for her life than a full time therapy practice was. As a sexuality coach, Samantha Fox works with women worldwide to support them as they discover that they are not as straight as they might have thought. She's developed an experiential method called Unbox Your Sexuality that creates a monumental transformation. The method helps women in unpacking, unlearning, and relearning schemas and narratives that we carry with us due to being born into a patriarchal society. Here's some of what we talked about: Why Samantha is happy she's shrunk her therapy practice and transitioned her business mostly to coaching Choosing the niche of women who are curious and coming out as queer Creating her signature program: Unbox Your Sexuality Why she feels great about being visible in her work (even though she used to be afraid) How she fills her program using podcast guesting How she creates and repurposes her videos and the apps she recommends Creating lead magnets that attract the right people Dealing with trolls on social media How Rebel Therapist helped her build this program Show notes at https://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/215
Rupert Murdoch, controversial owner of The Sun, launched "The Birthday Suit Girl", a topless photo feature, on 17th November, 1970. Within a year, the paper's circulation had nearly doubled to 2.5 million. Editor Larry Lamb intended his ‘Page 3 girls' to be wholesome and clean, skating on the edge of what was acceptable in a family newspaper. But by the 80s, Editor Kelvin Mackenzie had introduced raunchier shots, to compete with a resurgent Daily Star. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly recall how the long-running feature eventually fizzled out; reveal how little money massive stars like Samantha Fox, Melinda Messenger and Jordan were paid for their appearances; and examine how the Editorial team got their knickers in a twist over News in Briefs… Further Reading: • ‘What 80s glamour models did next - from selling 30m records to dating Eric Clapton & jail time for money laundering' (The Sun, 2021): https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/17129778/glamour-models-page-3-linda-lusardi-sam-fox/ • ‘No More Page 3: how a feminist collective took on a media behemoth to challenge everyday sexism' (The Conversation, 2021): https://theconversation.com/no-more-page-3-how-a-feminist-collective-took-on-a-media-behemoth-to-challenge-everyday-sexism-156478 • ‘Did Page 3 make the world a better place?'
