Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” John 7:37-39 (NIV) “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:15-18 (NIV) “Be Filled” Present tense: Passive voice: Imperative: Spiritual Breathing“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NIV) ASSIGNMENT: Practice Spiritual Breathing 1. EXHALE: Confess Sin “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) 2. How do we do that practically? 8) What areas of your life do you need to surrender or “resurrender” to the control and power of the Holy Spirit? 9) Are there areas of your life that you are “grieving” or “quenching” the work of the Holy Spirit in your life? Breath is life! After 25 years in a health and fitness career, Rebecca Kordecki always felt along her journey that she was meant to do more in a different way. She was completely focused on working with people from outside in, through fitness and nutrition, but she felt that she was always meant to touch people from the inside out.  Her big “Aha” moment came when she discovered breath work three years ago and she realized that she found the tool to help herself and others - from the inside out. She had been excavating through her own work and it became such a great tool that she started teaching it to her clients and in classes. She says that it has never failed her.  Holly highlights how different kinds of breath work techniques are the perfect way to insert into applied mindfulness into people’s busy schedules.  Rebecca shares that the beauty of breath work has so many facets that will calm, energize, induce sleep, reduce asthma, and release trauma. She suggests Box breathing, or a four by four. It goes as follows: inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, exhale for four counts doing this for six to eight cycles. There are variations that can be applied, such as inhale for four, hold for seven, exhale for eight. The point is to just BREATHE consciously! She mentions her teacher, Dan Brulé, the world's foremost expert and renowned pioneer in the field of breathwork, and leader of the worldwide Spiritual Breathing movement. Dan trains people to use the power of breath and breathing to relax and energize their body, focus and expand their mind, calm and balance their emotions, and nourish and uplift their soul. He is the author of several books, including “Just Breathe: Mastering Breathwork for Success in Life, Love, Business, and Beyond.” Interview Summary: In this interview, Dan first discusses his background and what inspired him to get into breathwork. He talks about traveling through India and China in search of eastern breathing practices, and reveals what he learned on this journey. He then explains the two main aspects of breathwork: breath awareness and conscious breathing. Dan gives examples of how conscious breathing impacts the body and mind. He also talks about reconnecting to creativity by reconnecting to our body and spirit. Chris describes how men often disconnect from their emotions, and Dan explains how to channel emotional energy through the breath. My very special guest in this episode of the podcast “Leadership is the Competitive Advantage” is Dan Brulé, a world renowned pioneer in the field of breathwork. He has been studying, practicing and teaching breathing techniques for more than 40 years. He is a master of Prana Yoga (The Hindu Science of Breath) and of Qigong (Chinese Medical Breathing Exercises). Dan is the author of several books: “A Formula for Transformation”, “The Principles of Breath Therapy”, “Zen and the Art of Breathing”, “Stress and Breathing”, “A Brief Introduction to Chinese Medical Breathing Exercises”, “The Art and Science of Breathwork”, “Spiritual Breathing”, and the latest book being “Just Breath” (it will be published in Estonian next spring). His fascination with the power of the breath began in 1970, when as an x-ray technician at the hospital he recognized the differences of how patients took and held their breaths while getting their chest x-rays done. This experience sparked a deep interest in breathing that continued throughout his career as a paramedic, a Navy deep-sea rescue diver, and an educator for the Red Cross. As he says: “I started to realize that there is a lot hidden in person’s relationship to their breathing – therein lies their relationship to their bodies and ultimately to their life.” Listing business executives, Olympic athletes and top performing artists as his clientele, more than 100 000 people in over 45 countries apply Dan’s breathing exercises to achieve peace and success in their work and lives. When you are starting to control your breathing, you are actually starting to control yourself. Every emotional state, every psychological state has a corresponding breathing pattern. The way I breathe when I am calm and peaceful and happy is very different than the way I breathe when I am upset or angry or disturbed. And the magic is it works the other way too. Every time my psychological or emotional state changes, my breathing pattern changes, and it is visible. Paying attention to our breathing can help us better handle day-to-day stresses and come up with more clear-headed responses to them. Breathwork can be used before and after an important presentation or high stakes meeting, both to prepare and recover. By practicing conscious breathing, we can learn how to access our peak state. That is the advantage that the great Navy SEAL warriors, Olympic athletes and exceptional leaders get out of the breathwork. By being both aware and conscious of our breathing patterns we can take control over our states of mind. As incredible as it sounds, by changing our breathing pattern, we can even manage our bodily chemistry. When we get a handle on our breath, we get a handle on our physiology. It is a way to hack into our nervous system, even a way to hack into our immune system. That is why breathwork can also have positive effects on our heart rate, blood pressure and even how well we digest our food. Breathing is such a powerful tool to focus on in order to awaken some of our higher abilities.
