MSU's Health and Wellbeing (UHW) Division is conducting a university-wide health and wellbeing assessment that includes an anonymous survey. The purpose of this assessment is for UHW to gain a deeper understanding of issues impacting MSU students, faculty, and staff as it relates to physical health, mental health, and social wellbeing.  The results of the survey will contribute to the development of a 5-year plan for MSU to equitably support Spartan health and wellbeing. Specifically, UHW will comprehensively assess: ·       The health of the student, staff, and faculty populations ·       Identify prevalent health trends and issues, and  ·       Gather data essential for tailoring and enhancing support services, resource allocation, and policies to promote a culture of wellbeing on campus.  All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to complete the survey.  The information shared will be kept confidential. The survey takes 8-10 minutes to complete. For additional information, visit: https://uhw.msu.edu/assessment. Discussing the assessment and survey on this episode of MSU Today are Dr. Norman Beauchamp, Jr, MD, MHS, MSU executive vice president for Health Sciences, executive sponsor of the sustainable health theme in the MSU Strategic Plan 2030, and co-chair of the MSU Health and Wellbeing Assessment; Dr. Alexis Travis, assistant provost and executive director of MSU University Health and Wellbeing; and Dr. Renee Canady, MPHI CEO and assistant professor at MSU's College of Human Medicine Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health. Conversation Highlights: (2:23) – “UHW is supporting a community where health and wellbeing is equitably woven into all aspects of campus life.” (2:58) – “The beauty of MPHI is that we are a living and breathing demonstration of governmental and academic innovation.” (3:44) – How does UHW define health and wellbeing? – “It's a complete sense of physical, mental, and social health and not just the absence of disease or infirmary.” (6:02) – Why is health and wellbeing a priority for students, faculty, and staff and how does it impact student success and staff and faculty success?  (7:52) – Who should take the survey and what do you hope to learn from it? (9:02) – “This survey is about voice.” (11:55) – “MSU could have easily completed this project without us. The fact that they saw partnership as vitally important is what we do.” (13:02) – What will you do with the data compiled from the survey? (14:48) – How does the assessment fit into the sustainable health theme of MSU Strategic Plan 2030? (17:29) – “It's my hope that people will not only participate, but that they'll be better for having participated.” For additional information, please visit: https://uhw.msu.edu/assessment.Photo credit: Donna Hondorp. If you had childhood trauma and you're still relying on conventional approaches to heal, you may still be suffering with symptoms and losing hope that healing can happen. Talking about your traumatic experiences may NOT be the best way to heal from what happened to you in childhood. In fact it can activate neural circuits related to the *stress response* – that make it harder to think, harder to focus and next to impossible to process your emotions! But there's a better way. In this video I talk about 30 years of research that shows that writing about traumatic experiences has powerful healing effects. I highlight the recent podcast from Andrew Huberman @hubermanlab, summarizing the work of Dr. James Pennebaker (and subsequent peer-reviewed studies based on his work). Mike Bledsoe, former CEO of Barbell Shrugged and today's guest, had everything from the outside looking in. His business made millions. He was a world-renowned strongman and Olympic lifting coach. He had what seemed like a successful marriage. And he hit all of society's most common metrics for success.  There was only one problem…  Mike was deeply troubled. He wasn't living the life he wanted because his life wasn't in alignment with his true self and purpose in life.  But Mike changed his life when he realized he was lifting through 3 herniated discs. Taking two months off from lifting for the first time since he turned 15 made Mike reflect deeply on his life for the first time.  Through this reflection, he realized his insatiable desire to train was rooted in a desire to be loved. Before, Mike thought the only way people would love him is if he was strong. He also realized that his 7-figure business, marriage, and his entire life wasn't serving his higher self.  After making these startling realizations, Mike set out to change his life through deep, introspective work.  The result?  He stepped down as CEO of Barbell Shrugged. He went through a difficult, yet transformative divorce. And he finally stopped using exercise as an excuse to avoid the difficult emotions he struggled with.  In today's show, Mike and I discuss: How to listen to your body's cues that you're overtraining before you injure yourself  Why it's so difficult to leave your biggest insecurities behind  How to expand your consciousness and align yourself with your true purpose  The trick for making gut-wrenching experiences, like going through a divorce, a transformative experience instead of a destructive one And so much more.  This is a far-ranging conversation that touches on many of the key struggles men face today.  Listen now.  Show highlights include:  The insidious way covering up your root desire to be loved with the gym can cause life-changing injuries (11:05)  Why overtraining and ignoring your body can make your body split at the seams—like it did for Mike who had 3 herniated discs he didn't know about until after he got surgery (18:08)  How not knowing how to breathe properly can cause physical pain across your body and heighten your risk of injury (22:55)  Why deep-seated beliefs you picked up in childhood caan creep back up and make you self-sabotage (and how to deal with them before this happens) (26:07)  The “projection into reflection” secret for uncovering your deepest subconscious fears and addressing them to improve your mental and emotional health (32:23)  The weird way your biggest insecurities actually helped you survive (and how this makes letting go of them extremely difficult) (36:54)  How zooming out time and space helps you live longer, with fewer aches, pains, injuries and insecurities (45:17)  Why making more money can actually make you feel more stressed, overwhelmed, and unhappy (56:57)  The counterintuitive reason being too logical means your emotions completely control your behaviors (1:12:36)  2 daily activities which keep you in a near-constant state of zen (1:21:43)    Resources mentioned in this episode:  1. "If you are not feeling alive, if you are feeling asleep, if you are feeling like you don't have access to intuition, to a deep sense of something more than your mind and your thoughts, chances are a detoxification is going to be essential. When your life force is drained, you're going to be more associated with your thoughts. But that's not you. Who are you underneath your narration of life?" - Josh Macin Parasite Cleanse "You have to build a foundation before you start slaying parasites in the system. It's one of the most common mistakes in the holistic health world: if you have parasites, you destroy them. When they die, they release toxic gases that make you very sick that also degrade the mucus membrane in the gut so it gives you a leaky gut. If you don't know how to navigate that and you just keep flooding the body with antiparasitics, you're going to cause cellular damage." - Josh Macin Belly = Reservoir of Energy "The belly is a primal reservoir of energy. Most people have disconnected from their belly. It is such a massive reservoir of energy and creative life force that it's part of health. It's part of being authentic. A lot of people's consciousness is resting in their heart, or in their throat, or in their mind. If you're always in your heart, you're going to get crushed by this world. When neither ayahuasca, float tanks, fasting, meditation, colon cleaning, nor yoga could provide him with relief he began to lose faith. In a surreal sequence of events that transpired three years after beginning the journey, he found out about heavy metal poisoning and started a comprehensive detoxification protocol. Uterine fibroids are usually found during a health evaluation with a primary care physician or gynecologist. They may ask about any relevant symptoms, take a medical history, and perform a physical exam to confirm a diagnosis. Patients may then be counseled about "watchful waiting", may be referred to a specialized provider for surgical intervention, or to another provider that addresses uterine fibroids by addressing the underlying root cause by utilizing integrative treatment options. Some over-the-counter medications relieve mild fibroid symptoms like pain and cramping. However, these medications don't address the root of the issue. A minimally invasive procedure called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is an outpatient procedure performed using local anesthesia. A small catheter is inserted into the treatment area and guided to the uterine arteries. Once in place, tiny particles are released to block the blood flow to the fibroids. This starves the fibroids and causes them to shrink over time. Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month is the perfect time to learn about uterine fibroids and start the conversation with your provider, friends, and loved ones. When was the last time you felt awe? Perhaps it's an emotion you notice often, evoked by the trees, clouds, or people around you. Or maybe it's something you associate with more dramatic, less frequent experiences.Dr Dacher Keltner, has written a sublime book on the subject of awe. It's called Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life and in it he proposes that awe is an emotion that's all around us, waiting to be discovered – and in doing so, we can transform our health and lives for the better.Dacher is one of the world's foremost emotion scientists and Professor of Psychology at the University of California. He's also Director of the Greater Good Science Center, which studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of happiness and wellbeing. He has spent decades studying the science of happiness and believes that across the world, we are collectively having a moment of reflection and looking for more meaning. In this conversation, Dacher defines awe as our response to powerful things that are obscure, vast, and mysterious. They're beyond our frame of reference, making us feel small and filling us with wonder. But you don't have to go to the Grand Canyon or see the Northern Lights to find them. Having studied people's understanding and experience of awe in 26 different countries, he's found eight types that are common and easily available to us all. They include nature, music, moral beauty (noticing others' kindness), birth and death, and my favourite ‘collective effervescence'. This is that feeling of coming together with others, moving as one, and sharing the same consciousness – you may have experienced it in a sports stadium, at a music concert, on a dancefloor, in worship, in a choir, or even at parkrun. We spoke in depth about how birth and death are strong triggers for awe, sharing our own painful yet precious experiences of watching close relatives die. We also considered how awe reduces the ego and makes you humble. And how having a regular practice of contemplation, like meditation or breathwork, can open us up to easily noticing and benefitting from everyday awe.I truly believe that Dacher's work can help all of us find greater meaning and greater health. He's done a fantastic job of finding the science to support his words, but I think we also know intuitively that what he says makes perfect sense. This was a wonderful and deeply profound conversation that contains science, storytelling, raw emotion and so much more.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Learn about her journey and insight into creating a healthy lifestyle. Brett Gilliland: Welcome to the Circuit of Success. I'm your host, Brett Gilliland. Today I've got Elle Scott with me. Elle, how you doing?  Elle Scott: I'm doing fantastic. Thanks for having me. Brett Gilliland: It's a little warmer, I believe, where you're at. It's uh, just a tad warmer, maybe like 60, 70 degrees warmer... Elle Scott: Maybe, like 85. Brett Gilliland: Yeah.  Elle Scott: ...but I'm not rubbing it in. Brett Gilliland: No, exactly. And that's okay. That's okay. At least I'm looking out, I'm seeing sunshine and it's beautiful out. Uh, at least, uh, you know, as beautiful as it can be in January, or I guess February now, isn't it? February here in Greater St. Louis area. So, Well, Elle we're gonna dive into a lot of great stuff. We're gonna talk mindset, we're gonna talk, uh, iridology or you're an iridologist, which if I'm even saying that correctly, I am new to this. I am learning about it. I saw you on another podcast. I'm like, Hey, we gotta get her on here and learn about this. Uh, but before we do that, uh, I would love to just kind of dive into the backstory of what's made you, the woman you are today and what's gotten you to where you're, where you've gotten. Elle Scott: Sure. So, uh, first of all, a huge fan of mindset, and I had the privilege of being raised by two entrepreneurs. So my mom and my dad, who were mainly in the real estate and construction field, and they were introduced to a lot of mindsets. So as a young child, you know, 10, 11 years old, I'm readingAhmed Dino and Zig Zigler. Yeah, . Um, and of course the, the all famous Napoleon Hill, which, uh, I consider that guy. My, my mentor though, never met him. Yeah. But his books are very impactful to me, and so that was always at the forefront growing up, and I ate it up. I wanted to know everything about how one manifests, how one directs energy. So I was that kid. And I also had a very strong desire to be successful. And, you know, I had done a lot of different things. I tend, uh, or had bounced around to a lot of different industries and tried different things. Did the, did the high school, college, uh, played college, uh, collegiate golf, uh, for Irvine, and that was fantastic and fun. Uh, but I wanted to try something else and really make it into something that would make me a lot of money. Not that golf wouldn't professionally.  Brett Gilliland: Right.  Elle Scott: But it's, I wasn't that competitive... Brett Gilliland: A little bit different deal.  Elle Scott: ...I was that. Right, I was that gal that, you know, told my coach, well, why can't I smoke a cigar and wear, you know, skirts while we're competing? He's like, you're not college material [inaudible]  Brett Gilliland: That's not how it works.  Elle Scott: Exactly. Uh, so, uh, right out of college went into technology sales, so, software, Um, I mean obviously at the time there was still, uh, we were still using mainframe. We were still using Excel as base for our software programs and such. And so I got an early started to software sales. Uh, worked a lot with the state, uh, state government, and then went into more software and then cloud, and spent about 17 years in that industry, which I absolutely loved. There was just, you know, different types watching. This, the technology advanced so quickly. Obviously business acumen, I gotta travel. I worked from home,

A Wholistic and Integrative Perspective on Physical, Mental, and Emotional Health with Dr. Jamil Sayegh TT&DPC EP 57 Tony and Dakota interviewed integrative naturopathic physician and healer Dr. Jamil Sayegh. Jamil not only studied traditional and naturopathic medicine, but he also knows NLP (neurolinguistic programming), hypnotherapy, and energy work. Jamil talks about his unique credentials as an N.M.D. (naturopathic medical doctor) Tony, Dakota, and Jamil talk about mental and emotional release (MER) therapy, the Wim Hof breathing method, genetic mutations, and the connection between the gut, the mind, and the body. Jamil shared a powerful story about his father. When Jamil was 19 years old, his dad almost died due to a sudden brain aneurysm. Dr. Sayegh spent the next 3 years as his father's primary care giver. Jamil details the lessons and realizations he got over those 3 years. Dr. Sayegh explains how we can die at any moment, how we deserve to live lives free of fear (while doing whatever it is that we really desire), and how we should cherish every moment. Jamil details the most powerful way of looking at life (from love and responsibility), while also explaining the concept that perception is reality. Dr. Sayegh continues to drop valuable nuggets over and over again until the end of the podcast. This one went a little long, and it was totally worth it! Dr. Jeanette welcomes Dr. Jan Patterson, author of Breath for the Soul, to explore the mind, body, spirit connection in health and illness. When we have issues with a part of our human journey, we sometimes cannot recognize the great aspects of who we are and just try frantically to get better. This leads to 'no one hears me' and 'I can't find out what is wrong with me' conversations. The path to wellness is sometimes just a greater exploration of the symptoms you are having, find out where they are sourced, and learn more about ways to nurture the self. What we are seeking is a better quality of life regardless of the disease, grief, or pain of our life. We just want to know our heart and soul while finding ways to deepen our connection to what works and what doesn't in everyday life.Does your food nurture your physical body or are your choices driven by your mind, memories, and habits? Exercise, meditation, prayer and breath work are so essential to keep the heart going in a tumultuous time that we need to unplug and give ourselves a break. We feel 'I am stuck and I want to feel better' is a conversation everyone has throughout their lives and there are many ways to improve your health and wellbeing. For more information on Dr. Patterson visit: www.DrJanPatterson.comFor more information and support with Dr. Jeanette Gallagher visit: www.DrJeanetteGallagher.com
