There are some situations where panic is not an option. In today's episode, Ryan talks with Senator Mark Kelly about what his years as a Navy pilot, test pilot, and NASA astronaut taught him about fear, focus, humility, and staying calm under pressure. They discuss the lessons of spaceflight, the danger of ego in high-stakes moments, Marcus Aurelius' “view from above,” and what real leadership requires in today's world.Senator Mark Kelly is the senior United States Senator from Arizona. Before entering public service, he served as a U.S. Navy combat pilot, test pilot, and captain. He was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1996 and flew four space shuttle missions: STS-108, STS-121, STS-124, and STS-134, commanding the final two. Over the course of his NASA career, he spent more than 54 days in space. After his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot in an assassination attempt in 2011, Kelly retired from the Navy and NASA later that year. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020 in the special election for the seat once held by Senator John McCain, and was reelected to a full term in 2022.

Breathe in peace and tranquility through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "All the Ways to Name a Dragonfly", by Ellen Rowland. This version ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. All the Ways to Name a DragonflyWhat if your first thought upon wakingwas not of all you have to do, or how sadand frightening the world is, but this:I am alive. In a body. On a day I have never met.Hello, you beauty. What if, instead of reaching for a dark screen, you stood on the back porch of this weeping, sought the bay window of the sky seeping peachlight into your soul, or maybe slate, salmon, cerulean, painting the day alive with swathesof impossible color right before your eyes. What if, despite your knotted heart, you made a listof everyone you love, anthologized the weedsin your yard, collected seeds, feathers, and lost poems, made a lexicon of all the ways to name a dragonflyin this world: libellule, vážka, dreóilín, pilivesa, spāre.What if you then made something with your hands—a daisy chain, bread, a potholder, a salad of dandelions—and gave it to someone near, a neighbor, a child, a stranger, because the others are too far away. This matters, too.And what if, today, you allowed yourself to feel the rough huskof all you are—every fault, fear, scab and scar—so that the goalis not to be right or good, but to be whole. Like somethingslightly bruised in the fruit basket on the kitchen table, you sinkyour teeth in and bite anyway, like it's the very first time.-Ellen RowlandContinue your mindfulness journey with Julie - through her writings. The world doesn't feel stable right now — and your nervous system knows it. Economic uncertainty, political chaos, global conflict: even if none of it is landing directly on your doorstep, it's landing in your body. You're more reactive than usual. Your sleep is off. You're scrolling more and resting less. You're doing fine — except that quietly, underneath it all, you're not. This episode is about how to stay grounded when the external world keeps shifting. Not through toxic positivity or pretending things are fine. Not through a five-step productivity system. Through something more honest: learning to anchor yourself in what's actually stable when almost nothing outside of you is.Today we're walking you through what groundedness actually means — and more importantly, what it feels like in a body that's been running on high alert. You'll leave this episode with a clearer understanding of why you feel so rattled right now, and a set of practices you can return to again and again when the news cycle, the economy, or life itself starts to spin. This is courage for the long haul. Let's practice it together.
Arsenal survived one of the season's most chaotic afternoons at the London Stadium to remain top of the Premier League — but this was far from a comfortable title-race performance. The panel breaks down Arsenal's dominant opening spell, the tactical structure that initially overwhelmed West Ham, and why the game completely changed following Ben White's injury and Mikel Arteta's controversial reshuffle. There's detailed discussion around Declan Rice moving to right back, Martin Zubimendi's difficult introduction into the game, and whether Arteta once again overthought a high-pressure moment. The episode also focuses heavily on David Raya's enormous late save from Matías Fernández, with debate over where it ranks among Arsenal's most important moments of the season.Martin Ødegaard's substitute cameo, Leandro Trossard's decisive winner, and Arsenal's ability to survive difficult moments under pressure are all analysed as the title race enters its final weeks. The second half of the show is dominated by VAR controversy after West Ham's stoppage-time equaliser was ruled out for a foul on David Raya. The panel reacts to the media fallout, pundit reaction, and the wider narrative surrounding Arsenal's set pieces and corner routines. There's also discussion around Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori injury concerns, the emotional toll of the run-in, Manchester City's remaining fixtures, and whether Arsenal can finally get over the line.A chaotic afternoon. A massive result. Julie Potiker leads this guided meditation focusing on what is needed in your life right now. She completes the meditation with the poem, " Hawk and Crow Surf the Wind", by Moudi Sbeity.Hawk and Crow Surf the Wind, by Moudi SbeityWhether it was for play or rivalry, I could not tell. Crow cawed. Hawk was silent. They glided in massive signatures, nearing then drifting, in the clear cold wind. At times hawk flew higher, then crow climbed above. They titled and wedged their open wings through the bare branches. They circled the neighborhood, then the next one over, then came back and perched on opposite trees. All the while I watched this happen, and the cyclists rolled on, and the cars drove by,and the nations with their many troubles warred still. It was a moment of private purity,a quiet thrill held like a secret in my pen. As to whether they noticed me, I cannot say,but I stood there like a sunflower, my face awed and tracking, a shiver rising up my spine.- Moudi SbeityContinue your mindfulness journey with Julie - through her writings. POV: the world is on fire—and everyone is looking at you to stay calm. Leadership falls apart before the crisis in the quiet moments of fear, pressure, and unchecked emotion. The crisis just reveals it all. EPISODE SUMMARY What happens when leaders confuse urgency with importance and control with strength? In this grounding, no-fluff conversation, Jenn Whitmer sits down with Ken Miller to talk about what actually helps leaders stay steady when the pressure is high. Drawing from Ken's lived experience—from incarceration to entrepreneurship to boardrooms—this episode reframes emotional regulation, decision-making, and leadership presence. This is not about optimism or pretending things are fine. It's about gap control, emotional awareness, and leading from clarity instead of fear. If you've ever felt the pull to react fast, clamp down, or hide emotion “to be professional,” this episode will challenge—and steady—you. Here's What's in the Episode: [01:10] Why joy is not optimism, denial, or a reward for getting everything right [07:12] The biggest thing leaders misunderstand in high-pressure situations: EMOTIONS [08:53] Gap control: expanding the space between stimulus and response so leaders act and not react [11:56] Ken's mic drop for leaders: “If you forget emotions, you will be controlled by them.” [16:09] A real leadership failure and the moment control started costing trust [19:02] Why checklist leadership feels safe but quietly limits humanity and innovation [29:45] “I'm good with good.” What it actually means to be well as a leader Leaders searching for how to stay calm under pressure, emotional intelligence in leadership, decision-making in high-stress situations, leading through uncertainty, and how to manage emotions at work will find this episode especially relevant. Jenn Whitmer and Ken Miller explore why fear-based leadership leads to reactive decisions, how gap control helps leaders respond with clarity instead of urgency, and why compassion, self-awareness, and perspective are not soft skills—but strategic ones. This conversation is particularly valuable for executives, managers, and business owners navigating burnout, team tension, or high-stakes leadership moments who want to lead with steadiness without sacrificing humanity. Key Takeaway Joy in leadership doesn't come from reacting faster. You need to create enough space to respond with clarity, compassion, and courage. About the Guest: Ken Miller Ken Miller is a speaker, coach, and author whose life story reflects the power of resilience, accountability, and intentional growth. Raised in a home marked by both love and trauma, Ken excelled academically early on, becoming a National Merit Scholar and graduating from an Ivy League university—clear signs of his potential. But addiction and a series of destructive choices led him into homelessness, incarceration, and profound personal loss. Hitting rock bottom forced Ken to make a defining decision: to rebuild his life through small, consistent, intentional choices. Released from prison with little more than determination, Ken committed himself to change. That commitment transformed his life and career, leading him to become a successful entrepreneur, mentor, and respected leadership voice. Today, Ken shares his story with organizations, schools, and leaders across the country, offering a powerful message: your past does not define your future—and it's never too late to choose differently. The Find Your Leadership Confidence Podcast with Vicki Noethling
Find Your Leadership Confidence Podcast Host: Vicki Noethling Featured Returning Guest: Pankaj Singh Episode Title: Staying Calm During a Crisis What do you do when everything is on the line—and panic is the easiest option? In this powerful episode of the Find Your Leadership Confidence Podcast, host Vicki Noethling sits down with Pankaj Singh to explore what it truly means to lead with clarity, composure, and purpose during moments of extreme pressure. In October 2020, Pankaj faced a defining leadership test when his company was hit by a full-scale ransomware attack—on a Friday morning, with payroll and vendor payments due. Leading the recovery effort while working with the FBI and other agencies, Pankaj and his team restored operations on an entirely new infrastructure within just 30 hours—without paying the ransom. That experience, combined with decades of leadership and mindfulness practice, led Pankaj to identify three core pillars behind sustainable success: • A pragmatic and continuous hunger for learning • Mindfulness practices rooted in early life experiences • Strong communication and collaboration across cultures and backgrounds These principles became the foundation for the frameworks he now teaches—including PROGRESS, PEPTID, and the Ascendancy Action System—designed to help leaders stay grounded, resilient, and effective in times of crisis and change. In this conversation, we explore: Pankaj's leadership journey and the moments that shaped his approach • The PROGRESS and PEPTID frameworks and how they support calm decision-making • How self-reflection builds clarity during uncertainty • Why purpose at work is essential when plans fall apart and rapid pivots are required • Practical strategies to prevent burnout in high-stress careers • How integrating mind, body, and spirit strengthens leadership during crisis and transformation If you want to lead with confidence, composure, and intention—especially when the pressure is on—this episode will leave you with insights you can apply immediately.
Nobody tells you that curiosity is a skill. Or that humor can be built. Or that the way you think is quietly deciding everything. Most of us are running on borrowed opinions — System One thinking dressed up as personality. We consume the same content, absorb the same views, and wonder why we feel forgettable. This episode breaks down five traits that genuinely change your trajectory: deep thinking, curiosity, uniqueness, humor, and enthusiasm. Not as abstract ideals — as practical, buildable skills that compound over time. Sam shares real frameworks, a few uncomfortable truths about how your algorithm is quietly shaping your identity, and why the most interesting people in any room aren't born that way. Train your attention like a muscle — distraction is the enemy of deep thought Curiosity isn't fixed; it's a lens you can deliberately apply to anything Humor follows rules — and once you know them, you can actually get funnier The traits that change your life are the ones nobody thought to teach you — until now. Markets are swinging sharply following the latest escalation in the Middle East, but investors seem surprisingly calm. Mike Armstrong and Paul Lane break down why stocks have barely moved overall despite a rapid spike in oil prices and what history tells us about when energy shocks actually become a serious economic threat. Mike and Paul also discuss how higher gas prices can ripple through inflation and consumer spending, why policymakers are watching markets closely as geopolitical tensions rise, the latest developments in AI and semiconductor demand, layoffs hitting the financial sector, and why the real solution to America's housing affordability crisis may be simpler than policymakers want to admit: build more homes.
The system was not built to keep you healthy. It was built to keep you paying. One entrepreneur who has spent his entire career inside US healthcare is finally saying out loud what most people only feel when they get the bill. What this episode is about:This is a raw, honest conversation with someone who has been operating inside the US healthcare industry since the 1990s. He breaks down exactly why the system is broken, who benefits from keeping it that way, and why the problem is only going to get worse, not better. Key topics discussed:- The "save all mentality" in US healthcare and why it drives unlimited spending regardless of cost- Why people are too scared to question their doctor's recommendations. and how that fear is being exploited- How insurance companies position themselves between patients and doctors- Why doctors get paid when you are sick, not when you are healthy, and what that incentive structure really means- Why the person who built their career in this industry believes the system is human-made, deeply destructive, and getting worse- The solution to the health care problem in the U.S. Why this episode matters:If you have ever received a medical bill that made no sense, been denied coverage, or felt like the system was working against you, this conversation will validate everything you suspected. This is not a political episode. It is a business and human conversation about a system that touches every single family in America. Entrepreneurs, healthcare workers, patients, and anyone paying for insurance needs to hear this.Drop a comment: have you ever felt like the healthcare system had your back, or did it let you down? My guest today is Dan Sundheim. Dan is the founder and CIO of D1 Capital Partners. He thinks about markets and businesses constantly, and has built a career entirely around that obsession. He manages over $30B across both public and private markets, with investments in SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic, and a public portfolio of names you may never have heard of. Dan shares the story of the short case he wrote on Orthodontic Centers of America and posted on Value Investors Club, which crashed the stock, and helped him land his first job. He shares why he backed Anthropic at a moment when many people told him it was the Lyft to OpenAI's Uber, what reading Dario Amodei's essays reminded him of Jeff Bezos, and how he thinks about LLM business models through the lens of Netflix and Spotify. We spend time on the extraordinarily stressful moment in early 2021 when GameStop hit the firm, and what Dan believes is the single biggest tail risk facing the global economy right now.
