What if quantum mechanics is not fundamental? What if time itself is an illusion? In this new episode, physicist Julian Barbour returns to share his most radical ideas yet. He proposes that the universe is built purely from ratios, that time is not fundamental, and that quantum mechanics might be replaced entirely without the need for wave functions or Planck's constant. This may be the simplest vision of reality ever proposed. As a listener of TOE you can get a special 20% off discount to The Economist and all it has to offer! When Everything's Going to Hell: Mastering Leadership in Chaos In this thought-provoking episode, the No More Leadership BS team explores how effective leaders maintain control when organizational chaos threatens to derail everything. Through real-world examples and practical insights, the hosts unpack strategies for not just surviving turbulent times, but using them as catalysts for growth. The Eye of the Storm: Finding Clarity in Confusion When facing organizational disorder, identifying clear priorities provides a strategic advantage. The discussion highlights how focusing on what you can control and addressing root causes rather than symptoms creates a path forward through the confusion. From Chaos to Clarity: The Leadership Roadmap Chaos presents unique opportunities for growth and building organizational resilience. The hosts share practical approaches: staying calm amid panic, communicating clearly and frequently, prioritizing immediate solutions, and supporting teams through turbulence. True leadership isn't just tested in chaos—it's revealed. The Second Law of Leadership: Why Order Dissolves The concept of "leadership entropy" explains how without deliberate intervention, organizational systems naturally progress from order to disorder. Fixing immediate problems isn't enough; implementing sustainable systems prevents the recurrence of underlying issues. The Bottom Line Effective leadership in chaos isn't about perpetual firefighting but creating foundations and systems that allow teams to function even when things get messy. Like a kindergarten classroom that appears chaotic to outsiders yet operates on clear expectations, organizations can handle disruption when built on solid principles. Tune in for: -> Real-world transformation stories from chaos to success -> Communication strategies that maintain clarity during crisis -> Why transparency becomes your greatest asset when facing challenges -> How to identify emerging leaders during chaotic periods -> Balancing control with team empowerment Remember: In chaos, you don't just need a leader—you need a foundation-builder who turns disorder into opportunity!

We often talk about the 10 Commandments, but did you know they were actually given twice to the Children of Israel? Not only that, but the context of this retelling of the 10 Commandments in Deuteronomy 5 clarifies what these commands meant and how the people were to learn them and live by them. Join us!  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    What does the name “Deuteronomy” mean? Who was this Second Law given to? Why did they need this law a second time?  2.    In terms of an overview of Deuteronomy 5, what is this passage about? What other Old Testament passage is similar to this one? 3.    What did the podcast say about the word “hear” means in verse 1? What was God calling the people to do? Can we be obedient to this instruction if we barely read the Bible and barely understand it? 4.    In verses 2 &3, what basis is given for these 10 Commandments? Where did their parents already covenant with the Lord? How did this next generation's obedience reflect their agreement to be in covenant with God? 5.    What were God's 10 Commandments that are given in verses 7 to 21? How does the slight wording difference between Deuteronomy 5 and Exodus 20 help clarify what these commands mean? 6.    How does verse 31 speak to the role of the priests back then? How might this be reflected in Paul instruction to Timothy in 2nd Timothy 4:2? Why was this necessary? What would happen to the people if these passages were not followed by the leadership? 7.    What does verse 32 mean by “turning aside”? What would this have looked like in their day? What does it look like in ours? 8.    What is God's challenge for His people in verse 33? What goes into walking in the way of the Lord?  Are there any areas of your own life where you're not faithfully walking with the Lord? What should be done about them? This weekend KITM Headquarters sent David Waldman and Greg Dworkin an email directing them to list five ways that they contribute to the civil discourse. These overachievers came up with something like two hours' worth! Gop town halls are experiencing F5 blowback from constituents, but it's a gentle breeze compared to what they're expecting to be hit with soon. This is the kind of thing local news loves to cover, and local protesters love to attend. People in power may want to hide, but for people who want to be in power, town halls are the place to be seen. Suddenly, no one wants to take credit for their thugs. Never Trump Republicans are divided on a host of issues but know how to get in front of a camera. They are enough of a threat to this administration to earn immediate attention from the Brown Shirts. On the other hand, Democrats are unifying behind nearby hedges to work on their guacamole bar charts, as their “Hope” poster mostly refers to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Ok, there is Senator Chris Murphy. Other than that, Donald K. Trump's worst enemy is himself, and he's doing a simply incredible job. He and Elon, of course. The only people they hate more than themselves are all the other people. With Dan Bongino and Pete Hegseth FA, there won't be any left to FO. We are, as usual, heading towards a government shutdown. Gops would like to blame Dems, if it wasn't for all of the government that they've been shutting down recently. As for the states, Trump picked and lost a fight with the Maine Governor, but hating Trump is completely bipartisan. The Times asks if had Ukraine not dressed so provocatively, would Vlad and Donald not be behaving the way they are? Germany has swung to the right in the latest elections but is also not swinging towards the United States.

As usual there are spoilers ahead! Description Forbidden Planet (1956) is a somewhat overlooked 50s classic. Although it often fails to make lists of the greatest sci-fi films of all time it has come across often in my written research and when speaking to guests. It's a film that not only seems to excite avid fans of sci-fi cinema but also influenced some of the genre's heavy hitters like both Star Wars and Star Trek. A costly, slick, colourful movie which takes a break from the red scare themes and invites us to delve into the dangers of the human mind. We mention Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics in the episode which are: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. The fourth law also known as Law Zero or Zeroth Law is: A robot cannot cause harm to mankind or, by inaction, allow mankind to come to harm.I have two amazing guests to help unravel the threads in this space opera. The ExpertsJay Telotte is Professor Emeritus of film and media studies at Georgia Tech. Where Is Your Treasure? A Reflection on Matthew 6:19-21 It's been a while since I shared my thoughts from the pulpit, but today, I want to revisit a sermon I preached back in 2011. This time, I've refreshed and expanded on the message, focusing on a critical question: Where is your treasure? The Heart of the Matter: Matthew 6:19-21 Let's begin with a familiar passage from the Sermon on the Mount: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV) These verses challenge us to consider the nature of our treasures. Are we investing in earthly possessions that will fade away, or are we focusing on treasures that hold eternal significance? The Parable of the Talents In Matthew 25, the Parable of the Talents illustrates our responsibility as stewards of God's gifts. We are called to multiply what God has given us for His glory. This raises a crucial question: Do we recognize that all our resources belong to God? The Call to Stewardship Stewardship is about being faithful with what we have. As Luke 16:10 states: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Our actions, both big and small, reflect our faithfulness. In 2 Corinthians 5:10, we are reminded that we will all appear before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of our stewardship. The Futility of Earthly Treasures Reflecting on earthly treasures, we can easily see their transient nature. Moths, rust, and thieves are constant reminders of the vulnerability of our material possessions. Here are some key points to consider: Material Wealth: Money, cars, homes, and possessions can provide temporary happiness but ultimately cannot be taken with us. Identity and Reputation: Our status and how others perceive us can sometimes lead us to seek validation through earthly means, which can be fleeting. Hypocrisy: Are we living authentically, or are we merely playing a role to impress others? The Second Law of Thermodynamics Interestingly, the second law of thermodynamics states that disorder tends to increase over time. This principle can be seen in our lives as well. Without intentionality, our earthly treasures will deteriorate, and our focus can shift away from what truly matters. Treasures in Heaven: How to Invest Wisely So, how do we lay up treasures in heaven? Here are some practical steps: Honor God with Your Wealth: As Proverbs 3:9-10 suggests, honoring God with our resources is vital. Be Generous: 1 Timothy 6:17-19 encourages us to be rich in good works and generous in sharing. Invest in Relationships: Building godly relationships and investing in others is a way to lay up treasures in heaven. Our children, for instance, are a significant part of this investment. The Importance of Connection Recently, I've noticed how the pandemic has changed our interactions. In a world where eye contact has become rare, I took the opportunity to engage with those around me while waiting in line at the grocery store. I struck up conversations with older individuals, and their gratitude for the simple act of chatting reminded me that many people crave connection. This experience reinforced the idea that we can lay up treasures in heaven by truly relating to others. Here are some ways to foster those connections: Take Time to Talk: Don't underestimate the power of a simple conversation. A few kind words can uplift someone's day. Be Present: Make an effort to look people in the eye and engage with them; it shows that you value them as individuals. Serve Others: Acts of kindness, whether small or large, can create ripples of goodwill and build lasting relationships. The Importance of Our Children As we reflect on laying up treasures, it's essential to recognize our children as invaluable assets in God's kingdom. They are like arrows in the hands of a warrior (Psalm 127:3-5), capable of making a lasting impact. Building the Next Generation Investing in our children's spiritual growth through programs like Adventure Club can help teach them sound doctrine and scripture. This investment not only benefits them but also builds a foundation for future generations. Conclusion: Shifting Our Focus In closing, let us remember the example of Christ, who spent His life serving others rather than focusing on Himself. By shifting our focus outward and investing in relationships, we can lay up treasures in heaven. What practical steps can you take this week to ensure your treasures are stored in heaven? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below! https://transcript.lol/read/generic/unknown/670d3047ddbb995e375ecea7

Get the book here: https://amzn.to/3XA6ad8 - This classic science fiction masterwork by Isaac Asimov weaves stories about robots, humanity, and the deep questions of existence into a novel of shocking intelligence and heart. “A must-read for science-fiction buffs and literature enjoyers alike.”—The GuardianI, Robot, the first and most widely read book in Asimov's Robot series, forever changed the world's perception of artificial intelligence. Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-reading robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world—all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asimov's trademark. The Three Laws of Robotics:1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov formulated the laws governing robots' behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future—a  future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete.“Tremendously exciting and entertaining . . . Asimov dramatizes an interesting question: How can we live with machines that, generation by generation, grow more intelligent than their creators and not eventually clash with our own invention?”—The Chicago Tribune

How did the universe evolve, and more importantly, how might it end? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome theoretical cosmologist and astrophysicist, Dr. Katie Mack, author of the recently published book, “The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking).” You're going to need your thinking caps for this episode, because the trio get into some pretty intense and complex concepts in physics and astrophysics.   We start off this episode hearing why Katie, who grew up under the starless pink skies in LA, embarked on her journey to explore the very beginnings of existence itself. It turns out, it wasn't the constellations or “pretty space pictures” that drew her to astrophysics, but the fact that all of the really cool, mindbending questions and extreme physics were related to stuff that happens in space like black holes and spacetime and “The Big Bang.”   For the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing. Chuck, who studies Observational Galaxy Evolution, brings up a paper recently published in the Astrophysical Journal by Anna de Graaff et al, about the discovery, using the James Webb Space telescope, of a group of 13-billion-year-old dwarf galaxies with an unusually large amount of dark matter inside them compared to modern day galaxies. The researchers then used the Illustris cosmological simulation of galaxy formation to evolve those galaxies and found that they would end up with a percentage of dark matter that is consistent with dwarf galaxies today.   Katie talks about the value of simulations in the study of the galaxies and the early universe, especially as the simulations get better at exploring more physics, like Illustris does. The kinds of simulations she works with, though, are more simple models designed to capture the essential physics of galactic evolution.   She's currently studying the possibility of dark matter annihilation in the early universe and what that would mean in terms of interacting with gas and energy as galaxies evolve. (At least, we think that's what Katie's talking about!)   Then it's time for our first cosmological question for Katie. Ellis asks, “What's your opinion on Block Universe theory?” Katie explains how the Block Universe theory attempts to model the past, present and future of spacetime, and how every point in space and time exists at the same time. (Again, we think that's what she's talking about!)   You'll hear about physics equations that look the same forward and backward in time, the Second Law of Thermodynamics, relativity, causality, predetermination, the limits of observation, and the meaning of time itself.   Next, Chuck asks Katie about her book, “The End of Everything” and how she thinks the universe might end. The two discuss string theory, bouncing membranes, the ekpyrotic model of the universe, and other cyclical cosmological models. Katie shares how people often respond to her book from a theological perspective, including the idea of cyclical universes in religion.   Finally, this episode addresses the confluence of science, philosophy and faith, looking at life and death, religion and the divine, personal beliefs and the need many people have to find meaning in existence and possibly even objective truth.   Like we said, thinking caps! And that's just Part 1. THE PHYSICS OF RETRO-CAUSATION AND TIME SYMMETRY - Daniel Sheehan PHD #60

Can time symmetry in physics, combined with exceptional violations of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, and the “quantum handshake” transactional interpretation of Quantum mechanics, open up main stream physics to the possibility of retro-causation? Could it help to explain the many paradoxes left open in modern physics? and is there experimental evidence for it? Today we have the extraordinary possibility of retro-causation to get our heads around: the apparently impossible phenomenon of events in the present causing changes in the past, or future events having an effect in the present depending on how you want to look at it. Today we'll be approaching this topic via the context of time symmetry in physics. As far back as 1947, French quantum physicist Olivier Costa de Beauregard, began to question the usual interpretation of time in quantum mechanics, intuiting that something was missing from the model for the many paradoxes in Quantum Mechanics to remain unexplained. And then, with others get on board over the years, in the 80's, John G Kramer, agreed that the missing ingredient was found in time symmetry and he proposed a ‘quantum handshake' between the waves passing forward and backward in time at the moment of collapse; in this Transactional Interpretation of quantum mechanics, Kramer claimed he had solved the paradoxes. My guest today has put together this research, a re-interpretation of the 2nd law of thermodynamics based on violations where Entropy exceptionally does not hold, and theorisation about quantum correlates to consciousness to create a new theory of retro-causation, which he thinks can be tested. He is Daniel Sheehan, Author and Professor of Physics at the University of San Diego, specialist in plasma physics, violations of the 2nd Law thermodynamics and Retro-causation. He is the founder the Quantum Retro-causation symposia that met at The University of San Diego. Have an Atheist Experience today as Secular Rarity (SR) and Armin Navabi, sort through questions of “creation”, differences in Quran scriptures, and ponder the unfalsifiable simulation claim. Jasmine, a theist in Ohio, says that all of existence including us, is part of god and that everything is created through god. How can everything be created through god and be god at the same time? How can something that does not make sense be convincing? Is there a way you can build a claim without using language that is so vague? Rick, a theist in TX, asks how atheists explain the creation of the universe and the world. There are people dedicated their lives studying how this happened and their explanation does not include a deity. The framing of this question assumes there is a creation and that we as atheists have an answer. Why do atheists need to come up with an explanation when we are not making any claims? Even if things did have a beginning, does not make it true there was a creation. We do not have to have any justification for not believing something. Why do you think the scriptures such as the Bible or Quran will have any validity with atheists? If you were to be shown something that shows how the universe got here, and that does not include a god, how would that change your beliefs and certainty there is a god? If justifiable evidence were to be provided for the existence of god, we would believe, however, worshiping that god will be a another story. Armin and SR have a different opinion on this. Abdur Rahman, a Muslim in NY, has laid out three criteria: logical theological framework, preservation of the original text of the Quran, and miracles. There is a ton of evidence showing the Quran has not been preserved perfectly. How do we explain the different versions of the Quran that actually differ in the commandments of Allah? If there were Quranic verses in two separate versions that were so radically different that it changes the commands of Allah and can't be harmonized, would that make you no longer accept that the Quran is perfectly preserved? Why do we need the opinions of the scholars to make this harmonious? How do you explain these differences without changing the commandment of Allah and committing a sin? Steve in NE wants to talk about the collapse of the wave function, how things will exist in the fuzzy quantum state until they are observed, and the Second Law of Infodynamics which requires information entropy to remain constant or decrease overtime. He wonders if these things are indicators of a simulation program. How are you connecting these things? It doesn't really matter if we are in a simulation or not because our reality is indistinguishable from a base reality. We don't believe there is anything that can rule this claim out, making it unfalsifiable. Thank you for hanging out with us today and remember the prompt of the week is: Create the next god!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.

Life on earth demonstrates the second law of thermodynamics. Not true of Heaven.Quick Quote - Source - Jeff HillesA Biblical Christian worldview perspective - The second law of thermodynamics is centered around entropy which is “a process of degradation or running down or a trend to disorder" (Wikipedia). We see this dictum at work on many levels from the destruction of man through our own sin nature, to the deterioration of stars as energy is given off through heat and light until death. Praise God that for those who believe in Christ's finishing work on the cross, we will live in eternity in a perfect, sinless state where entropy no longer exists.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Generalized Stat Mech: The Boltzmann Approach, published by David Lorell on April 12, 2024 on LessWrong. Context There's a common intuition that the tools and frames of statistical mechanics ought to generalize far beyond physics and, of particular interest to us, it feels like they ought to say a lot about agency and intelligence. But, in practice, attempts to apply stat mech tools beyond physics tend to be pretty shallow and unsatisfying. This post was originally drafted to be the first in a sequence on "generalized statistical mechanics": stat mech, but presented in a way intended to generalize beyond the usual physics applications. The rest of the supposed sequence may or may not ever be written. In what follows, we present very roughly the formulation of stat mech given by Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann (though we have diverged substantially; we're not aiming for historical accuracy here) in a frame intended to make generalization to other fields relatively easy. We'll cover three main topics: Boltzmann's definition for entropy, and the derivation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics from that definition. Derivation of the thermodynamic efficiency bound for heat engines, as a prototypical example application. How to measure Boltzmann entropy functions experimentally (assuming the Second Law holds), with only access to macroscopic measurements. Entropy To start, let's give a Boltzmann-flavored definition of (physical) entropy. The "Boltzmann Entropy" SBoltzmann is the log number of microstates of a system consistent with a given macrostate. We'll use the notation: SBoltzmann(Y=y)=logN[X|Y=y] Where Y=y is a value of the macrostate, and X is a variable representing possible microstate values (analogous to how a random variable X would specify a distribution over some outcomes, and X=x would give one particular value from that outcome-space.) Note that Boltzmann entropy is a function of the macrostate. Different macrostates - i.e. different pressures, volumes, temperatures, flow fields, center-of-mass positions or momenta, etc - have different Boltzmann entropies. So for an ideal gas, for instance, we might write SBoltzmann(P,V,T), to indicate which variables constitute "the macrostate". Considerations for Generalization What hidden assumptions about the system does Boltzmann's definition introduce, which we need to pay attention to when trying to generalize to other kinds of applications? There's a division between "microstates" and "macrostates", obviously. As yet, we haven't done any derivations which make assumptions about those, but we will soon. The main three assumptions we'll need are: Microstates evolve reversibly over time. Macrostate at each time is a function of the microstate at that time. Macrostates evolve deterministically over time. Mathematically, we have some microstate which varies as a function of time, x(t), and some macrostate which is also a function of time, y(t). The first assumption says that x(t)=ft(x(t1)) for some invertible function ft. The second assumption says that y(t)=gt(x(t)) for some function gt. The third assumption says that y(t)=Ft(y(t1)) for some function Ft. The Second Law: Derivation The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that entropy can never decrease over time, only increase. Let's derive that as a theorem for Boltzmann Entropy. Mathematically, we want to show: logN[X(t+1)|Y(t+1)=y(t+1)]logN[X(t)|Y(t)=y(t)] Visually, the proof works via this diagram: The arrows in the diagram show which states (micro/macro at t/t+1) are mapped to which other states by some function. Each of our three assumptions contributes one set of arrows: By assumption 1, microstate x(t) can be computed as a function of x(t+1) (i.e. no two microstates x(t) both evolve to the same later microstate x(t+1)). By assumption 2, macrostate y(t) can be comput...

Does the use of computer models in physics change the way we see the universe? How far reaching are the implications of computation irreducibility? Are observer limitations key to the way we conceive the laws of physics? In this episode we have the difficult yet beautiful topic of trying to model complex systems like nature and the universe computationally to get into; and how beyond a low level of complexity all systems, seem to become equally unpredictable. We have a whole episode in this series on Complexity Theory in biology and nature, but today we're going to be taking a more physics and computational slant. Another key element to this episode is Observer Theory, because we have to take into account the perceptual limitations of our species' context and perspective, if we want to understand how the laws of physics that we've worked out from our environment, are not and cannot be fixed and universal but rather will always be perspective bound, within a multitude of alternative branches of possible reality with alternative possible computational rules. We'll then connect this multi-computational approach to a reinterpretation of Entropy and the 2nd law of thermodynamics. The fact that my guest has been building on these ideas for over 40 years, creating computer language and Ai solutions, to map his deep theories of computational physics, makes him the ideal guest to help us unpack this topic. He is physicist, computer scientist and tech entrepreneur Stephen Wolfram. In 1987 he left academia at Caltech and Princeton behind and devoted himself to his computer science intuitions at his company Wolfram Research. He's published many blog articles about his ideas, and written many influential books including “A New kind of Science”, and more recently “A Project to Find the Fundamental Theory of Physics”, and “Computer Modelling and Simulation of Dynamic Systems”, and just out in 2023 “The Second Law” about the mystery of Entropy. One of the most wonderful things about Stephen Wolfram is that, despite his visionary insight into reality, he really loves to be ‘in the moment' with his thinking, engaging in socratic dialogue, staying open to perspectives other than his own and allowing his old ideas to be updated if something comes up that contradicts them; and given how quickly the fields of physics and computer science are evolving I think his humility and conceptual flexibility gives us a fine example of how we should update how we do science as we go. We all have an internal drive that propels us forward, inspiring us to achieve and create. Yet, there's also an innate anti-drive, a subtle yet powerful force that holds us back. This episode delves deeply into the nature of this anti-drive. We explore the foundations of resistance, drawing insights from Stephen Pressfield's 'The War of Art' and linking it to entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. We'll examine why resistance occurs, how it manifests in both our personal and professional lives, and the various ways it can be hidden, even under the guise of positivity. Is the universe a simulation? If so, is there someone twisting the dials or is the universe a big computer running itself, a program that includes things like the coati and those sneakers with wheels in them? It's a big question (the biggest, really), and in this episode we dig into it with Dr. Melvin Vopson. Melvin is an Associate Professor of Physics at the UK's University of Portsmouth, and he's made news for his work studying the nature of information and entropy. His conclusion? The way things work — from electrons on up to stars — looks suspiciously like how a computer might run things.  It's a fascinating and controversial idea. Is information the base layer of the universe? And does this mean there's a planet full of popular, well-known fantasy characters out there somewhere? We expel a little heat energy into the void to figure out how real Melvin Vopson's theories might be. (And how real we ourselves might be.) When we think of meditation, a lot of us think of chanting and things affiliated with other religions--but at its core, that's not what it is. Meditation can simply be calming the mind by disciplined focus on some external stimulus, like your breath, your heart, or the ambient sounds around you... and if your mind is scattered and flitting from topic to topic, there is certainly great physiologic value in this, as it will get you out of "fight or flight" and into the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state. Also, if your mind is too loud, it makes it all but impossible for you to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit--so quieting your mind through this form of meditation is valuable for that reason as well. Biblically, though, meditation is more than just quieting your "monkey brain." That just gets you back to neutral. Rather, biblical meditation involves focused thought upon an idea long enough for you to get a picture in your mind of what you're contemplating. We all do this all the time; it's just a matter of what we're thinking about. Andrew Wommack likes to say that if you know how to worry, you know how to meditate. Worry is meditation upon something negative. Paul tells us what we should be meditating on in Philippians 4:8: "whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things." The reason this is so important is because scripture tells us that our thoughts determine what we believe, just like planting seeds will determine what kind of harvest we get. Proverbs 23:7 says, "for as a man thinks in his heart, so is he." We can act contrary to what we truly believe for a short period of time, but what we think in our hearts is who we really are, and it will come out eventually. This is why Jesus said that the most important parable He ever taught was the Parable of the Sower (Matt 13:3-23). In the parable, the "seed" is the Word of God, and soil is the hearts of the listeners. It's the state of the soil which determines how well that seed will grow and produce a harvest. There are other possible seeds besides God's word, though--in the parable, there were thorns and tares in one type of soil, too. Jesus later defines these for us as "the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches" (Matt 13:22), which can choke the Word such that it becomes unfruitful. Those sound like typical sources of worry to me. Think of thoughts in general--any type of thought--as a potential seed that can eventually bear a harvest if you plant it and cultivate it (or meditate upon it until you can see it in your mind). A stray thought here or there can't do this any more than a seed can without the right environment for it to grow--which is why we're told in scripture to take our thoughts captive (2 Cor 10:5). Think of this like weeding the 'garden' of your heart. If you don't want the harvest, then pluck up the plant before it can bear fruit--or, better yet, avoid exposing yourself to the seed in the first place, if you can control it. This isn't always possible, but we can choose what we watch, what we listen to, what kind of church we go to (one that preaches faith or unbelief), and what kind of people we spend time with. "Bad company corrupts good character" (1 Corinthians 15:33)--so if you surround yourself with people who are negative, complaining, undisciplined, or any other negative character trait, most likely it'll rub off on you eventually. Those people influence how you think, and unwittingly this plants "seeds" in your heart that will eventually bear a harvest, if they are allowed to do so. It takes discipline to control our imaginations, of course. Just like the Second Law of Thermodynamics describes entropy in the universe (which means that left to themselves, all systems go from order to disorder), so the tremendous power available in our minds will accomplish nothing if we don't focus it appropriately. Worse, if we use our imaginations for an actively destructive purpose like worrying, we might end up with exactly what we're essentially "believing" for. A medical example of this is the placebo versus the nocebo effect: about 30% of people (probably those who are most "suggest-able") in clinical trials will typically get better even if they're given a sugar pill rather than the actual medication being tested, because they believe it will help them. Their minds make it work. The nocebo is the same principle in reverse: if you believe something will make you worse, it very well might, even if the substance itself is neutral. This is the whole concept behind affirmations, or positive confessions: say something long or often enough, and eventually it'll sink down into your subconscious mind, and you'll start to believe it--even if you don't at first. Not what we superficially say, but what we truly believe, determines how we will act. Other religions and spiritual traditions jump onto this too, in books like "The Secret"--because it's a neutral principle which can work for us or against us. It's just part of the way God set up the world. In Genesis 11:6, speaking of the Tower of Babel, God says, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, now nothing they imagine to do will be impossible for them." This was a negative story, but it illustrates the principle as God made it. Jesus said the same thing on the flip side when the disciples were amazed that the fig tree withered when he cursed it: "Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe you receive them, and you will have them." (Mark 11:23-24). When I was a kid, I read this verse, took it at face value, and commanded the mountain outside my bedroom window to be cast into the sea. Nothing happened, of course... but I also didn't expect anything to happen. That's the 'caveat'--you have to actually believe what you're saying, like Jesus did. And that's why it's so important for you to "guard your heart with all diligence"--because out of it literally "spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:20-23). But not immediately; as with any plant, harvests come "first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head" (Mark 4:28). Gardening is hard work; you have to constantly plant not just what you want, but you have to prepare the soil, water the seed, and pluck up competing weeds that might steal the nutrients from your fledgling little plant and choke it. It's just like that with our minds. That's why biblical meditation--using a positive imagination to picture what we want, to visualize God's promises coming to pass--is so important. Here's an overview of some of the Hebrew and Greek words in scripture translated to meditate (or to imagine, speak, ponder, etc), their context, and how they help to back up this idea. HAGAH: meaning to meditate, speak, imagine, study, mutter, utter, muse, devise Joshua 1:8: "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate H1897 therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." Notice that God didn't tell Joshua to just read the book of the law. He told him to meditate on it day and night, to the point where it's coming out of his mouth continually. That's what was required for him to truly follow what was written. That's what was necessary for him to prosper and have success. Psalm 1:2-3: "But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate H1897 day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers." These are the results of meditating on God's word... versus: Psalm 2:1: "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine H1897 a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 'Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.' He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision..." The ungodly use this same principle of meditation to produce evil. This psalm shows that it won't ultimately work for them, but only because God will step in in the end, just as He did at the flood when the imaginations of men's hearts were only evil all the time (Genesis 6:5) and then when the men of the repopulated earth tried to build the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:6). Psalm 2 looks ahead to when God will step in again, as described in the book of Revelation. Psalm 35:28: "And my tongue shall speak H1897 of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long." Psalm 63:6: "When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate H1897 on thee in the night watches." Psalm 71:24: "My tongue also shall talk H1897 of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt." Psalm 77:12: "I will meditate H1897 also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings." Psalm 143:5: "I remember the days of old; I meditate H1897 on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands." Consider the fact that the man who wrote these psalms started out a shepherd boy, the youngest of his brothers and some speculate that he was even illegitimate--and he became the greatest king Israel ever had, to the point where the Messiah was called by his name, "Son of David" (Luke 18:38). And much of what we know about meditation comes from him. Psalm 38:12: "They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine H1897 deceits all the day long." And yet, David knew that his enemies were using this same principle against him. He spent some 13-17 years on the run from these enemies (we don't know how old he was when he was anointed king, so we don't know exactly how long). It certainly looked to him like they were winning for quite awhile. Fortunately, David persisted in envisioning and trusting and believing in God's promises coming to pass, even when everything seemed to be against him, and circumstances went from bad to much worse. In 1 Samuel 30:1-6, David had finally fled with his men out of Israel altogether, and was dwelling in the land of his enemies, when their city (Ziklag) was burned to the ground, their wives and children and everything they had stolen, and his men turned on him and spoke of stoning him. The natural human response to this would have been to give in to emotions of despair, but instead David "strengthened himself in the Lord" (1 Sam 30:6). You know that this took incredible discipline on his part, to fix his thoughts on what God said and not his current circumstances. Some believe that David encouraged himself by writing Psalm 61 after Ziklag was burned. The result was that not only did David and his men recover everything that was taken from them, but within days, he was crowned king--at long, long last. Prov 15:28: "The heart of the righteous studieth H1897 to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things." Back to the idea of entropy: cultivating our minds to produce righteousness, wisdom, and a positive imagination doesn't just happen. We have to study. We have to do this work. This is the process of being transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Prov 24:1-2: "Do not be envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them; For their heart studieth H1897 destruction, and their lips talk of mischief." The point here is that while the righteous studies wisdom and godly principles, the wicked are doing just the opposite. They too will reap what they sow (Gal 6:7). YETSER: imagination, form, framing, purpose, conception. Genesis 6:5: "And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination H3336 of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." Genesis 8:21: "And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination H3336 of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done." Deut 31:19-21: "Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant. And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination H3336 which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware." God knew long before the Israelites ever disobeyed Him that they would disobey. You can argue that this is because God is omniscient and knows the end from the beginning, and that's certainly true too--but this verse shows that God knew it (at least in part) because he could see what they were imagining. He knew their thoughts would determine their actions. This is exactly what happened in Numbers 13, when the Israelites sent the twelve spies into the Promised Land. God had promised to give them the land, but the spies returned with a "negative report". It wasn't an untrue report, mind you--the spies reported that the land was full of giants, and it was. Only Joshua and Caleb recognized that while true, that fact was irrelevant. What they should have been focused upon was God's promise that He would give the land to them, regardless of its current inhabitants. But the ten spies' negative report produced fear in the hearts of the people, and that entire generation never got to experience God's intended blessing for them. They died in the wilderness--all except for Joshua, who became the leader after Moses, and actually led the people in forty years later, and Caleb, who at eighty-five years old, was just as strong as he'd been in his forties (Joshua 14:11). He took the mountain of Hebron where the most intimidating Canaanites lived for his inheritance (Joshua 14:6-15). Psalm 103:14: "For he knoweth our frame; H3336 he remembereth that we are dust." The word 'frame' is also the word elsewhere translated meditation or thoughts, so it's not speaking just of the physical frame. The context here is speaking of our sins, and God's compassion upon us for our weakness. In other words, none of this is easy. God knows that. He pities us and has compassion upon us. Isaiah 26:3: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind H3336 is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." I love this verse. It gives us the recipe for peace. "Perfect peace" in Hebrew is actually shalom shalom shalom: the word for peace written three times. The translators presumably didn't know how else to translate that but "perfect." David modeled this for us at Ziklag, intentionally turning his mind to the Lord. Jesus modeled this for us when sleeping on the boat in the middle of the storm (Mark 4:35-41). Abraham modeled this for us when he kept his mind on God's promise of a child and not the impossibility of his and Sarah's circumstances (Romans 4:18-22). It's not easy, but the result is shalom shalom shalom.  SIYACH: meditate, seek, pray, commune, muse, ponder. 1 Chronicles 16:9: "Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk H7878 ye of all his wondrous works." Psalm 77:6: "I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune H7878 with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search." Psalm77:12: "I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk H7878 of thy doings." Psalm 105:2: "Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk H7878 ye of all his wondrous works." Psalm 119:15: "I will meditate H7878 in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways." (and repeatedly throughout Psalm 119) Proverbs 23:7: "for as he thinks in his heart, so is he." Hope YAHAL: wait, tarry, trust, hope, be patient. Hope can be considered positive imagination. It's the precursor for faith (Hebrews 11:1). Romans 8:24-25: "For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it." Psalm 42:5: "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance."   Greek dianoia = mind, understanding, imagination This is a command. It's not merely talking about intellectual study, though of course that's part of it. What starts out as an intellectual exercise eventually becomes the mental picture of what we see on the inside. Matthew 22:37: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." Eph 1:18: "The eyes of your understanding G1271 being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints" Eph 4:18: "Having the understanding G1271 darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart" Col 1:21: "And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind G1271 by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled." Heb 8:10: "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, G1271 and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people" 1 Peter 1:13: "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, G1271 be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;" Greek logismos: thought, imagination, reasoning, judgment "Casting down imaginations, G3053 and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" A few more examples of this principle in action: Genesis 13:16: God showed Abram the dust of the earth as a symbol of his descendants, and the land of Canaan that would be filled with them. Genesis 15:5: God showed Abram the stars as a picture of his descendants Mark 6:41: before feeding the 5000 with five loaves and two fish, Jesus looks up (ANABLEPO), seeing into the unseen realm, and gives thanks. (2 Cor 5:7: we walk by faith, not by sight... and this works because that's where all the spiritual blessings already exist (Eph 1:3). In this episode, Sean explains the second hermetic principle - the Law of Correspondence. This law shows the interconnectedness of all things and that there is no real separation. He provides examples like how an embryo forms from two cells coming together to make the whole, representing masculine and feminine energy in creation. Correspondence repeats across scales of reality. Sean stresses that to manifest ideas, you need both integrity to execute and intention to envision. Just having ethereal visions without grounding them creates incoherence. He explains that what's within us reflects the universe too. Our unstable energy can cause explosions in life, just like splitting an atom. Finding inner stability allows outer harmony. Sean shares how all energy comes from the same source, compacted differently across dimensions. Loving energy heals; fearful energy harms. Mastering Correspondence lets you see the miracles in all. Key Takeaways: There is no real separation between things What's within reflects without Both integrity and intention are needed to manifest Our inner instability creates outer explosions All energy is compacted source energy Loving thoughts create loving ripples

Christiansen and Nick Chater Buy here: https://tinyurl.com/35bvs8be Stephen Wolfram starts by discussing the second law of thermodynamics - the idea that entropy, or disorder, tends to increase over time. He talks about how this law seems intuitively true, but has been difficult to prove. Wolfram outlines his decades-long quest to fully understand the second law, including failed early attempts to simulate particles mixing as a 12-year-old. He explains how irreversibility arises from the computational irreducibility of underlying physical processes coupled with our limited ability as observers to do the computations needed to "decrypt" the microscopic details. The conversation then shifts to discussing language and how concepts allow us to communicate shared ideas between minds positioned in different parts of "rule space." Wolfram talks about the successes and limitations of using large language models to generate Wolfram Language code from natural language prompts. He sees it as a useful tool for getting started programming, but one still needs human refinement. The final part of the conversation focuses on AI safety and governance. Wolfram notes uncontrolled actuation is where things can go wrong with AI systems. He discusses whether AI agents could have intrinsic experiences and goals, how we might build trust networks between AIs, and that managing a system of many AIs may be easier than a single AI. Wolfram emphasizes the need for more philosophical depth in thinking about AI aims, and draws connections between potential solutions and his work on computational irreducibility and physics.
