Pieta, the charity dedicated to preventing suicide and self-harm, is calling for better understanding and support for people affected by self-harm. Almost half of the people who come to Pieta for help are dealing with self-harm, and most of them are under 25. Self-harm is most common among teenagers and young adults. See pictures and read more on materiallyspeaking.comOriginally from Oregon, John moved around America a lot as a child. Although he was not formally schooled as an artist, he received his education at a young age while travelling with his family through Europe and the Middle East. There he took in many of the great works of antiquity.John came to sculpture in his thirties from a background in painting, and very quickly began carving monumental pieces which he was able to sell. It was at this time that he experienced a revelation when he began to imagine how stone carvers worked in the past.Although this technique is much less practised nowadays, he believes that for thousands of years sculptors worked without eye protection. They discovered what John refers to as profile carving. John describes himself as a direct, flexible, profile carver. The first piece John mentions is a big reclining figure which earned John enough money to allow him to come back to Pietrasanta and work. Recently the owner of that piece died and John was able to buy it back in an auction.John also tells of the gravestone he carved which is in the cemetery of Querceta, near Pietrasanta which is a Pieta of 5 life-size figures.Another piece, a pair of lovers, John carved from a special piece of marble he had kept for 16 years. As he was carving the embrace he had a moving experience as he felt them pushing themselves into each other, as though they couldn't get close enough. Now John divides his time between the Redwood forests of California and Pietrasanta - drawing inspiration from the world around. He acknowledges a great debt to the cavatore, the quarrymen. Without quarrymen, artists don't have the material to work with.johnfishersculpture.cominstagram.com/giovannipescatore51

Named after the radical painter JMW Turner, the Turner Prize was set up in 1984 to celebrate British Contemporary Artists.   On Tuesday 24 September 2024 Tate Britain unveiled the work of the four artists who have been shortlisted for this year's prize: Pio Abad, Jasleen Kaur, Claudette Johnson and Delaine Le Bas. At the press view for the Turner Prize 2024 exhibition RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with one of the Curator's of the exhibition Amy Emmerson Martin, Assistant Curator, Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain to firstly find out a bit more about the history and background to the Turner Prize to then an introduction to each of the four shortlisted Artists along with an overview of their work that impressed the Turner Prize panel which is on display at Tate Britain.   The winner of the Turner Prize 2024 will be announced on 3 December and the exhibition of the four shortlisted Artists work continues at Tate Britain until 16 February 2025. Description tours with one of Tate's Visitor Engagement Assistants can be booked in advance by either emailing hello@tate.org.uk or calling 020 7887 8888. About the four shortlisted Artists: Pio Abad presents a restaging of his nominated exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, which explores cultural loss and colonial histories. Featuring drawings, sculptures and museum artefacts, Abad brings together in-depth research and collaboration to highlight overlooked histories and connections to everyday life, often from the perspective of his Filipino heritage. Newly added works include Kiss the Hand You Cannot Bite 2019, which reimagines an Imelda Marcos bracelet as a three-metre concrete sculpture, are shown alongside works like I am singing a song that can only be borne after losing a country 2023, a drawing that turns the underside of Powhatan's Mantle - a Native American robe in the Ashmolean's collection - into an imagined map of colonised lands. Jasleen Kaur presents works from her nominated exhibition at Tramway, Glasgow. Rethinking tradition, Kaur creates sculptures from gathered and remade objects, each animated through an immersive sound composition. Items including family photos, a harmonium, Axminster carpet and kinetic worship bells are orchestrated to convey the artist's upbringing in Glasgow. A central feature is music, which is used to explore both inherited and hidden histories. Yearnings 2023, is an improvised vocal soundscape of the artist's voice, which is layered over snippets of pop songs playing from the speakers of Sociomobile 2023, a vintage Ford Escort covered with a large doily crocheted from cotton and filling the space with Kaur's own musical memory. Delaine Le Bas presents a restaging of her nominated exhibition at the Secession, Vienna. For her Turner Prize presentation, the artist has transformed the gallery into a monumental immersive environment filled with painted fabrics, costume, film and sculpture. Presented across three chambers, the work addresses themes of death, loss and renewal, and draws on the rich cultural history of the Roma people and the artist's engagement with mythologies. Textile sculpture Marley 2023, for example, reimagines Dickens' ghostly eponymous character as a harbinger of chaos, welcoming the viewer to this carefully constructed and captivating world, whilst the film Incipit Vita Nova 2023, projected onto organdie fabric, transports the viewer deep into a dreamlike sequence, matching the fluidity and distortion of the mirrored walls around it. Claudette Johnson presents a series of works from her nominated exhibitions at The Courtauld Gallery, London and Ortuzar Projects, New York, alongside new works. Using pastels, gouache, oil and watercolour, Johnson creates striking figurative portraits of Black women and men, often depicting family and friends. Her works counter the marginalisation of Black people in Western art history, shifting perspectives and investing her portraits with a palpable sense of presence. Friends in Green + Red on Yellow 2023 represents a recent development in her practice of creating double portraits, whilst Pieta 2024 is one of the artist's first works on wood, made from pastel and oil on bark cloth. You will find out more about the Turner Prize 2024 exhibition by visiting the following pages of the Tate website - https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/turner-prize-2024 Image show the entrance to Tate Britain with two red banners reading 'Tate Britain' and  'Free For All'

The Mystery of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross! There is Only One Key to Truly Knowing Jesus! We celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14th). It is important we take the word Exaltation seriously! Why? Because in today's world, the cross appears seemingly everywhere. It appears on buildings, we begin our prayers by making the cross, we bless ourselves by means of it and we talk about carrying our crosses. Given all this, it's amazing how impoverish our knowledge of this Mystery really is in today's world. Many are guilty of repeating this over and over again without really thinking or meditating on the depth of this mystery. What does it really mean to communicate and pass on the faith? It starts with understanding the first word of today's Feast Day . . . Exaltation. One exalts something that you value and appreciate. One exalts someone well, only to the extent that you know that one. This mystery is not about Jesus carrying the Cross today! It is not simply about Jesus dying on the Cross today! The issue is what is our relationship to this Mystery? How well do we see how deep and broad it is? There Is Only One Key to Truly Knowing Jesus Christ! There is only one key to truly knowing Jesus Christ! Only one! There are not many! St. Louis de Montfort would often say and write: To seek to know all things, and not know Jesus Christ, is to know nothing. To know Jesus . . . is to know enough! To seek to know Jesus, and not know this key, is not to know Jesus at all! The Cross is the key that unlocks everything! It is the secret to understanding the identity of Jesus. It is the secret to understanding scripture. It is the secret to knowing the greatest truth of our faith! Listen more within the Homily! On this Feast Day, the Church celebrates the mystery of the tree that undoes the tragedy of the earlier tree. Celebrate the Victory of Life that comes to us! Hear more within this first of two Conferences on this Feast Day. Listen to this Meditation Media. Listen to: The Mystery of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross! The Instrumentalist by Harriet Constable: Anna Maria della Pieta was brought up in a Venetian orphanage, where unwanted babies were posted to the nuns through a slot in the wall. This was in the early 18th century, and by the age of eight she was widely recognized as a musical prodigy with an ambition to become the best violinist and composer that Venice had ever seen. Her tutor at the time was Antonio Vivaldi, who may have appropriated her compositions as his own and denied her the limelight in which he was used to shining. Rich with the atmosphere of Venice of the time, and radiant with musicality, this is terrific.  A Very French Affair by Maria Hoyle. Maria is a Kiwi in her 60's who was dating but not finding lasting happiness and then met a guy whom she saw only a few times before he suggested she move to live with him in France where he was going to live in a mill by a river in a tiny French village. What could possibly go wrong? This is  a highly entertaining romance in the beloved style of A Year in Provence, about grabbing life with both hands whatever your age, what it means to belong, the joys and frustrations of French living, and why you should always look closely at a map before emigrating. Ultimately, though, it is a story about the greatest adventure of all. Love.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chances are you've heard of Antonio Vivaldi, but you've never heard of Anna Maria or her fellow female orphans at the Ospedale della Pieta, which in 18th century Venice boasted the greatest orchestra in the world. Without these ridiculously talented girls and women, The Four Seasons might not exist.  Harriet Constable's debut historical fiction, The Instrumentalist, is the story of Anna Maria, Vivaldi's favourite student and violin prodigy, shining a light on the women and girls we should have been talking about for the last 300 years. He listens with prejudice and certainty But his hands hang lowest Of all the hanging hands. “My hands will be lifted,” he says, “as I lift others. So move on – let me be. I have work to do.” And his low hands Raise stones to his Single-eyed altar. Then he lays himself down – Body draped over the altar stones (a Motherless Pieta) Self-sacrificed, savior to none But heaven waits, they say. In this episode, I'm joined again by Josh Baron as we discuss my poem, Motherless Pieta, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, obedience, self abandonment and more. The daughter of two preacher's kids, Pieta Brown's early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace, running water, or TV. There, she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, Greg Brown, the now beloved Midwestern folk singer. Later, while living with her mother in Birmingham, Alabama during her formative years, Pieta drew on and expanded these influences and began writing poems and composing instrumental songs on piano. By the time she left home at 18 she had lived in at least 19 different houses and apartments between Iowa and Alabama. In her early 20's, after experiencing what she describes as "the songs calling,” Pieta started experimenting with the banjo and eventually picked up a 1930's Maybell arch-top guitar during a visit to her father's place and never looked back. Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly 'bohemian' upbringing, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings soon after teaching herself how to play guitar. "I grew up around a lot of musicians and artists living on the fringe, and have always felt most at home among them," Pieta says.Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana's true gems. In recent years Pieta has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style, but also the power of her singing and songwriting, including fan favorite Paradise Outlaw (2014 Red House, which Bon Iver master mind, Justin Vernon, called his “favorite recording made at our studio.”) Pieta has toured North America with Mark Knopfler, and toured various regions of the U.S., Australia and Canada with John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani Difranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico among others. She has co-written songs with and made recent guest appearances on albums by Calexico, Amos Lee, and Iris Dement, whose latest masterpiece Workin' On A World (2023) Pieta co-produced. Pieta's songs and music have been heard in various TV Shows and indie films including Everything Will Be Fine (Wim Wenders). With the release of her most recent album Freeway (September 2019, Righteous Babe) co-produced by Bon Iver drummer, S. Carey, followed by multiple experimental collaborations since with various artists including JT Bates, S.Carey, and Howe Gelb & The Colorist Orchestra, as well as a new instrumental based side-project she calls Sylvee & The Sea, Pieta's music and artistry continue to rise.~ "...a style and a sensuality that's all her own...."- Pop Matters~ "Among the top tier of songwriters today..." - FAME (Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange)~ "...a gifted singer-songwriter whose lyrics are pieces of polished poetry" - Huffington PostPieta's WebsiteSRTN Website

"In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it." (Michelangelo)  One of the greatest sculptors created unsurprassed masterpieces---The Pieta, David, Moses among others. He was a master at taking a block of inanimate material and bringing it to the highest artistic fulfillment.  I was thinking about this great work and something popped into my mind about the narcissistic mother who endeavors with all of her force to create the perfect child---her golden one. Some are chosen to play this role; others are not.  Many a narcissistic parent has become obsessed with molding a tiny baby into a perfect vision. This works beautifully with art using clay, marble and alabaster but it is a disaster with little children.  Were you the chosen one, the one who was ignored, the golden child dethroned, the child who was hidden in the bunch, the child who got into a lot of trouble with mom because you insisted on being yourself? There are innumerable patterns in these narcissistic, highly dysfunctional families.  Some children respond positively to the prodding of their highly ambitious narcissistic mothers. These mothers are restless creatures. Mother is relentlessly at work. Day and night she is plotting and thinking about the magnificence of the end product when the curtain parts and her creation is at center stage.  If one daughter does not go along with the transformation project, she will discard her and pick another child. The abanded daughter has a hard time because she has lost her mother's attention and is no longer in a psychological state of her mother's grace. But those who tough it out can be blessed because they bucked the force of the narcissistic mother's disturbed contorted vision.  Rather, this daughter is an individual with many unique gifts.  Narcissistic mothers will always be with us as well as narcissistic daughters. Our work is to recognize the true nature of the high level narcissists in our families and to assert and honor the immutable authentic, creative self that is grounded in truth and integrity.  Click the link below for my books on Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/46befxue Click the link below for the Mental Health News Radio Network, A Global Network of Shows by Podcasters on every facet of Mental Health: www.mhnrnetwork.com

Elfie Tromp (1985) is a Dutch writer, dramatist and performer. She is the city poet for Rotterdam and in-house dramatist at theatre Walhalla. Her third novel Pieta, a multi-faceted story surrounding a problematic statue, was recently published. She also creates musical theatre in the form of feminist punk cabaret, her latest show was titled Op de Barricade van het Hart (EN “Upon the Barricades of the Heart”)Find & follow Elfie:http://elfietromp.nl IG: @elfietrompTwitter: @elfietrompKey TakeawaysWe can use both the art that we create, and the art that we see, as a way of finding guidance to navigate this modern turbulent and confusing world. When you get a seat at the table, even if that is to fulfil a diversity quota, you deserve to be there and are allowed to use that opportunity. Anger can be a great driving force for changeIf we're able to take things less personally, we can also be more effective in communicating with othersYou might find motivation and power in thinking about what you are able to do now, that your parents or ancestors didn't get to doWe can consciously choose to work on breaking patterns of intergenerational traumaIn Western society we have become estranged from our bodies and have lost physiological knowledge about ourselvesRadical empathy can be a positive way to interact with those who we don't agree with, so we can foster greater understanding and step off the path of violenceDon't forget to have fun. It took a lot for you to be here, don't spend it only on anger and suffering and frustration. But know that you were also built for pleasure. Hosted on Acast.
