Here is the question of the day: is it OK to read romances (like Harlequin & its ilk) if the sex isn't explicit? Are Christian romances a good substitute for secular romance genre reading? That question was posed to me from a long-time reader of this blog.I explore the complexities of Christian romance novels and the challenges of balancing faith with engaging narratives, avoiding sin and idols, and invite deeper contemplation. Links mentioned How far is too far? What does edgy mean and do we even need edgy? Why does it have to be called Christian fiction anyway- Tolkien's wasn't... In Christian fiction, how do we balance keeping the message strong and not watering it down while still wanting to reach readers beyond Christian bookstores or churches? Five Minute Family

Good morning, Five Minute Families. Do you feel stuck, ill-equipped, or unknowledgeable? Think back to your early years of schooling. You weren't born knowing how to read; you went through a process to learn how to read. The thing is that most of us forget the process of the things we now know and begin to do automatically. However, when something challenging comes along, we are often frustrated that we do not know or understand how to handle the situation. Don't forget, though, that growing in the Lord as a family is a process, and we each have to learn how to hold to Him and extend His grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Whenever you feel discouraged or unaware, remember the word “yet.” So, “I don't know” becomes “I don't know YET.” “I don't understand”… “I don't understand YET.” Remember what James wrote in James 1:5, “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.” That verse doesn't say you will know immediately when something happens, especially as a family with various levels of biblical knowledge and application. Take a breath and pray for wisdom to come. Remember, in Psalm 27:14, we are reminded to wait for the Lord. Here are five suggestions:Refocus your mind on Christ. James 3:13-17 Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense.Seek godly counsel. Proverbs 19:20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise later in life.Control your emotions. Ephesians 4:26-27 “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger and do not give the devil an opportunity.” Emotions are normal, how you respond to those emotions is the challenge set before us. Be humble. Don't try to get ahead of the Lord like Sarah did. Remember 1 Corinthians 3:18-20, “Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become a fool so that he can become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written, He catches the wise in their craftiness; and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings of the wise are futile.”Stay hopeful. As Psalm 130:5 says, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope.”Five minute families, none of us know everything we need to know to deal with the issues that will arise. The flipside of the encouraging “yet” is, for example, we will face death in our immediate families, but we have not yet. We will face addiction in our family or biblical community, but we have not yet. We will have moments of overwhelm, irritation, rebellion, disinterest, and so much more, in our families, even if we haven't yet. Don't let “yet” be a negative word in your home. Hold tight to God's truth that nothing is new under the sun and that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge (Proverbs 1:7). Since wisdom resides in the heart of the discerning (Proverbs 14:33), we know that by holding onto God in difficult or simply confusing times, we can come out the other side, praising Him and being even more effective to share His truth and light to those around us who are hurting. Steve Laube put it this way, “In every sense Jesus is our “yet.” Everything before Him pales when compared to the after.” John 1: 11-12 says, “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become...

Stephanie welcomes a guest teacher as part of our God's Glory, our Delight series. Steve Laube is joining us as a theologian and Bible teacher. Among many other things, Steve is a Sunday Class teacher with deep passion for delight in the glory of God, and decades of study in theology. He brings to us today his passion for Scripture and his eye for detail as we join Peter, James and John on the mountain to witness the once-in-history Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ. Peter's inkling to build "three tabernacles" (or "booths" or "tents") when he witnessed the event and the presence of Moses and Elijah, might indicate that the transfiguration took place in the general season of the "fall festivals" of Jewish faith - the festival of succoth, or festival of booths, being preeminent among the Jewish fall festivals. Succoth starts in 2022 on October 9, so we are releasing this episode in conjunction with this beautiful celebration. The transfiguration is the most paramount event in the earthly life of Jesus Christ to reveal His glory. Through the eyes of Peter, James and John we are invited to experience delight in the glory of the One and Only begotten Son of the Father, on whom His glory and delight dwell. So we ask, Why does the transfiguration matter to our faith today? Why does it matter that Moses and Elijah showed up on the mountain with Jesus? Why could they (and we) not stay on the mountaintop? Why do we need to descend back into the valley? What does the Jewish festival of Succoth have to do with the Transfiguration? Steve opens the texts of Scripture to us today to beckon us into experience of delight in the glory of Jesus Christ.   Brand new episodes coming September 2nd! In the meantime, listen to part two of The Book Within with Steve Laube. Steve Laube joins The Money Millhouse for another episode centered around writing a book, this time they focus on the money side of writing a book. Steve debunks the myth that authors make a lot of money. Before he arrives in the Millhouse, Bethany and Ellie go over The Keys to a Great Proposal from SteveLaube.com, including what points should make up your book proposal when thinking of writing a book. When Steve joins the conversation, he shares how many books he reads both for work and for fun. He debunks the myth that authors make a lot of money, and says writing a book is a tool for expanding your ideas, not a means of making money. Ellie asks what the average advance (money one is paid before the book is published) for people published with a royalty based publisher, where Steve says there is a wide range when it comes to this and it depends on the publisher. He also gives practical examples of how someone can use a book to make money that may not be directly from book sales (i.e. speaking, back of room book sales at events, periodicals and magazines, etc.). Ellie also shares another income stream called Brand Ambassador work, which also lead to media. All of these streams are because of the initial book. They then talk about tax deductions and expenses that authors can count towards their taxes and what writers can forget they can write off (with the reminder to continually check with your tax expert to make sure you are making the best moves when it comes to your taxes and being above the law). Ellie remembers a saying Steve said early in her career is the idea of goodwill coin (16:52), and how people can be branded as “hard to work with.” They also discuss practical ways we can earn goodwill coin by being respectful of people's time and expertise. They also clarify what Ellie meant when Bethany and Ellie end the show talking about “goodwill coin” again. They also talk about ways they each help each other in the space and maintaining goodwill coin when sending emails, especially when it comes to burning bridges or using up all their goodwill coin. They also finish the last few pieces of The Keys to a Great Proposal. Resources: stevelaube.com preditorsandeditors.com

Steve Laube, literary agent and the president of The Steve Laube Agency, comes into the Millhouse talking abut the unsolicited book proposal Ellie had sent over to his publishing house 20 years ago, and then how they became friends. Ellie asks Steve a very difficult (trick) question, and Bethany asks Steve how long he has been in the business. He explains his journey to becoming a literary agent and founding his own agency. Steve talks about where people start when they want to start writing a book. He also explains what an agent does to help direct their career, and gives valuable resources to give practical help to the writer. Steve talks about a proposal, and the difference between a proposal for a fiction vs. non-fiction book. They also talk about the difference between self-publishing and royalty based (aka traditional) publisher.
