Ein Plädoyer für Reiherschnabel, Stachelnüsschen & Co. in heißen Zeiten.
As part and parcel of China's compressed modernization, processes of state-led rural urbanization through land expropriation and rural-to-urban relocation have been transforming rural Chinese people's lives in unprecedented ways. This has led to different, often adverse outcomes for the affected populations – China's “landless peasants” - as well as to the construction of divergent narratives about the role of the Chinese state's measures for them. To provide a so-far missing perspective to existing research, Isabel Heger-Laube reconstructs the role of the experienced changes from landless peasants' own narratives, drawing on the “big” and “small” stories collected through fieldwork in Huaming model town in Tianjin's Dongli district. By focusing on ordinary people's subjective processes of meaning making, this book not only puts into perspective objective assessments and persistent narrative tendencies, but also sheds new light on the puzzle of social stability in the wake of large-scale, state-led transformations in contemporary China. China's Landless Peasants and the Role of State-led Rural Urbanization: Narratives, Meaning Making, and the Puzzle of Social Stability was published open access with Würzburg University Press in 2025. Free e-book version. Dr. Isabel Heger-Laube (isabelheger@gmail.com) is a sinologist and social scientist with an interdisciplinary footing in social anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Early childhood centres are lifting their game, with fewer falling below quality standards. Education Review Office monitoring shows 47% of standalone services didn't meet the quality threshold, down from 64% a year earlier. Early Childhood Council Chief Executive Simon Laube says the reviews are just snapshots and even the best centres go through staff changes and have to rebuild quality. He told Ryan Bridge that the reviews are sensitive, so anything that's slightly out of place will appear on the review, and pretty much everyone will have something. More early childhood education centres are expected to fold under rising costs. The Household Economic Survey shows the average weekly ECE fee has jumped from $25 in 2007, to $90 in 2023. Early Childhood Council CEO Simon Laube says pay parity rules have driven 443 centres to shut in the past three years. He says it drives up teacher salaries. "But the funding from the Government doesn't follow suit, so as the salaries increase, the providers are paying more and more to pay the teachers - but the funding stays the same." In this episode, Tall Cop Jermaine Galloway sits down with Kym Laube of HUGS Inc. a nationally recognized prevention leader and the newest member of the Tall Cop Speakers Network! Together, they dig into the why behind youth substance use and how communities can play a powerful role in prevention.Kym breaks down the importance of ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and how they can shape a young person's health and longevity. More importantly, she highlights how Positive Childhood Experiences and just 1–2 caring adults can serve as anchors that help young people thrive, even in difficult environments. The conversation also explores the critical impact of delaying first substance use. With 90% of addictions beginning during the teen years, Laube emphasizes that the earlier a child starts using, the higher their risk for dependency making early prevention essential.Jermaine and Kym also discuss practical strategies for supporting youth: talking openly about feelings, teaching stress-management skills, and modeling healthy ways to navigate anxiety and pressure. This powerful discussion offers insight, tools, and hope for anyone working with youth from parents and educators to prevention professionals and community leaders.Save the Date for the 5th Annual Tall Cop Emerging Drug Trends Conference on 11/12-13/2026!Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.Subscribe to our monthly newsletter here!Learn more about the Tall Cop Speaker's Network!
