Melissa Bank, who passed away in 2022, was a fabulous writer and an incredible person. We met a few times in person, out here in Southern California when we were both speakers at the Literary Guild, and in NYC when I traveled there for conferences. She came on the show a couple of times, for Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing and The Wonder Spot. Her output was modest though her books became bestsellers. She received an MFA from Cornell University and won the Nelson Algren Award for short fiction from the Chicago Tribune. I'll always remember when I asked her to talk about how to write a novel, she said, “I don't know how to write a novel.” What she knew how to do, she was, was write stories. Stories became chapters and chapters become a book. If you've never read these two books, check them out. My guess is you will become a fan. You'll have to tune in to find out about Stephanie Oswald's recent celebrity author encounter! What's the common thread in your writing? As Stephanie Oswald has been working on manifesting the future version of herself as a writer on stages and tour, she kept wondering what she'd talk about in those moments. Sure, she could talk about what her book is about, but what's really at the heart of the stories. What's the purpose for showing up to write everyday to get her book written. That's what Stephanie felt was missing. As an additional writing coach supporting Elizabeth Wilson's Memoir Master Plan Cohort, Stephanie found she could take the content from the program and apply it to her fiction writing. Your core message is how you connect with your readers through your writing. For Stephanie Oswald, it's the theme she's landed on that is helping her stay focused and find purpose for showing up to the blank page each day to keep writing her novel. A lot of life events derailed Stephanie's process, but it's been through her connection with the memoir writers in the Memoir Master Plan Cohort that she's been able to bring deeper meaning to her work in fiction. “I'm not asking for everybody to center queer characters in their narratives in world-building, which would be nice, actually, you know, as nice as that would be.But just to include us and to show that we exist and in whatever ways are appropriate in your world, whether that is a more like marginal existence in some worlds.” - Chad GraysonIn this episode on the How To Write the Future podcast, “Seamless Queer Characters in Fantasy World Building,” host Beth Barany talks to sci-fi and fantasy author Chad Grayson about the importance of queer and neurodivergent representation in world building, protecting your creativity, and shares productivity tips for neurodivergent writers.ABOUT CHAD GRAYSONChad Grayson has worn many hats: tech support flunky, gas station philosopher, reluctant middle school wrangler, and, for one unforgettable night, cheese-mold removal specialist. These days he lives in far Northern California, where he writes hopeful, character-focused sci-fi and fantasy that will break your heart and duct tape it back together. He can usually be found painting tiny fantasy heroes and monsters, wandering the woods in deep narrative contemplation, or yelling at his plot outlines like they've personally betrayed him (they know what they did). His superpowers include procrastination, dyscalculia, and making emotionally devastating story beats sound like a perfectly reasonable life choice. Here is a short story collection that showcases my fiction. https://dl.bookfunnel.com/b2p8y4vi0lWebsite: https://www.chadgrayson.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/c.e.graysonRESOURCESSupport our work for creatives!Buy me a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/bethbaranyGET HELP WITH YOUR WORLD BUILDING - START HEREFree World Building Workbook for Fiction Writers: https://writersfunzone.com/blog/world-building-resources/GET SOME FREE WRITING COACHING LIVE ON THE PODCASTSign up for the 30-minute Story Success Clinic with Beth Barany: https://writersfunzone.com/blog/story-success-clinic/GET SUPPORT FOR YOUR FICTION WRITING BY A NOVELIST AND WRITING TEACHER AND COACHSchedule an exploratory call here and see if Beth can support you today: https://writersfunzone.com/blog/discovery-call/SHOW PRODUCTION BY Beth BaranySHOW CO-PRODUCTION + NOTES by Kerry-Ann McDadeEDITORIAL SUPPORT by Iman Llompartc. 2025 BETH BARANYhttps://bethbarany.com/Questions? Nicholas Binge has lectured in creative writing, co-hosts the 'Binge Reading Book Club' podcast, and has just published his 4th book. It's called 'Extremity'.It follows up the success of 'Professor Everywhere', which won the Proverse Prize for Literature, 'Dissolution', and the bestselling, 'Ascension'. 'Extremity' is a time-travelling police procedural. It follows Julia Torgrimsen, brought out of retirement to investigate the murder of a billionaire she once worked with. When she finds the body... there's an identical one right next to it.We discuss how this book came to be a novella - does the idea dictate the form? Also, you can hear why he found it tricky becoming a full-time writer, why he always tries to celebrate the small wins, and about his winding path to publication. This episode is sponsored by IngramSpark. Indyana Schneider—international opera singer and novelist—shares practical ways to write rhythm and desire on the page, craft scene-level tension, and shape compressed-time narratives; plus lessons from drafting her debut on the Tube. You'll learn:How to build sentence-level cadence: vary lengths and read aloud to tune flow.A simple spine for short-timeframe novels: day-by-day beats, rising stakes, a final choice.Where to start and stop scenes so pages move (start late, leave early).Writing desire without cliché: stay in character voice; revise for rhythm and clarity.Turning musical training into prose: sensory sequencing that guides attention. When to query (and what “ready” looked like) plus handling editorial feedback.Smart ways to measure success beyond sales and keep momentum across careers. Today we're busting one of the sneakiest myths out there: that you need a literary background to write a great novel. Spoiler—you don't. In this episode, I share a story from a coaching call, plus my own late start as a novelist, to remind you that credentials matter far less than persistence, passion, and the willingness to keep learning by doing. Writing skills can be learned—but the only thing that really counts is that you keep showing up. The takeaway? Don't let yourself fail before you even start. You are a writer if you choose to be. So choose it—today, tomorrow, and the day after. Have a comment or idea about the show? Send me a direct text! In this kickoff episode, I'm talking about what it means to set intentions for your writing life—without the pressure of perfection.I'll walk you through eight prompts to help you set meaningful goals, reflect on what's been working (and what hasn't), and move into the next season of your writing with more clarity and less self-doubt.You'll also hear about the Polished Page Pack—a free bundle of tools from expert book coaches and editors to support you wherever you are in your process.Let's set the stage for a season of growth, courage, and creative momentum.Set Your Writing Goals with These 8 PromptsFirst, ask yourself: How do I want to feel about my writing this season? And what would need to shift so I can nurture that kind of relationship with my work?Next, write down three writing goals for Fall 2025. Make at least one of them a mindset goal—something that helps you foster the relationship you want to have with your writing. Now, check your goals against the lens of your reality. Are they doable in three to four months? Or are you expecting too much of yourself? Be honest, and recalibrate if necessary.Once you've refined them, break your goals into actions. What specific steps can you take daily, weekly, or monthly to move forward? Then ask yourself: How will I actually make this happen? What's my plan? And just as importantly, how will I get back on track if life derails me?Look back over the past three to six months. What worked for you, and what didn't? What needs to change this fall so you can move toward your goals and feel good about your writing?Ask: What am I willing to change this season to make my goals achievable? And my favorite prompt: What do I want to be brave enough to do this season that I haven't tried before? And finally, take a moment to reflect on your progress so far in 2025. What have you already accomplished? What small wins or big gains can you celebrate right now?”GRAB The Polished Page Pack, which is loaded with free resources to guide you through every stage of the writing process. It's 100% free until September 15, 2025.Then it's gone.Have a comment or idea about the show? Superhero violence and graphic action sequences are prevalent on the screen and on the page, but this book takes an alternative route with practical guidance, frameworks, and tools for incorporating the principles of peacebuilding and nonviolence into compelling fiction. By mapping a path less travelled but just as vital in divisive times, in n A Fiction Writer's Guide to Peace: Crafting Nonviolent Heroism (Bloomsbury, 2025) Dr. Gabriel Ertsgaard shows writers how they can enact nonviolent heroism in their characters, model civil resistance in their stories, and create worlds around a mythos that champions redemptive nonviolence. With concepts applicable to writing for fiction, drama, the screen, and narrative poetry, A Fiction Writer's Guide to Peace deconstructs the necessity for violence in popular works, explores key concepts in peace studies, and helps writers establish their own peace poetics. Focused around the narrative craft techniques of character arcs, campaigns, duels, and worldbuilding, the book features numerous creative writing prompts and examples from key works. These include films such as Trading Places, Selma, Lage Raho Munna Bai, and Frozen and literature ranging from Shakespeare's plays to Dickens' A Christmas Carol to Julia Quinn's Bridgerton novels. A timely and important expansion to any writer's toolkit, A Fiction Writer's Guide to Peace allows storytellers to understand the complex dynamics of, and the damage caused by, violent perspectives and actions, giving them a way into considering nonviolence as powerful and preferable. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Katie Chambers, owner of Beacon Point Services, helping Indie authors write with power. With a passion for words, a gift for teaching, and a flair for dynamic speaking, Katie brings clarity and energy to every conversation. She's the owner of Beacon Point, where she and her team help indie authors polish both fiction and nonfiction. Katie is equally passionate about helping authors strengthen their writing and guiding freelance editors to streamline and grow their businesses through practical tools, webinars, and resources. Here is what Katie says in her own words: I'm Katie Chambers, an organizational expert, former English teacher, and editing agency owner who helps editors run their businesses with ease and authors write with power. As the founder of Beacon Point, I lead a team of editors polishing both fiction and nonfiction, and I teach the craft of writing with the same clarity and energy that once earned me the title “best English teacher” a principal had ever seen. After becoming a mom, I had to reimagine my career, and editing became my second act. Within three months of working with Self-Publishing School authors, I was named their top preferred editor. Since then, I've helped hundreds of authors sharpen their writing and bring their message to life. Whether it's writing structure, revision strategies, character development, or crafting compelling nonfiction, I love making the writing process feel less mysterious and more empowering. But I don't just edit—I teach. I've been called the "admin queen" by editors I mentor and a "favorite conference speaker" for making business systems actually fun. I help freelance editors and creative solopreneurs streamline their workflow, manage clients with confidence, and finally stop drowning in email. I'm also a full-time mom and full-time business owner, so I speak honestly about the messy balance of running a business while raising a family, and how to build systems that support your life, not the other way around. I don't believe in gatekeeping. I believe in lighting the way. I help authors shine like a beacon.
