Video (television, film, the moving image generally) is today's most popular information medium. Two-thirds of the world's internet traffic is video. Americans get their news and information more often from screens and speakers than through any other means. The Moving Image: A User's Manual (MIT Press, 2025) is the first authoritative account of how we have arrived here, together with the first definitive manual to help writers, educators, and publishers use video more effectively.  Drawing on decades as an educator, publisher, and producer, MIT's Peter Kaufman presents new tools, best practices, and community resources for integrating film and sound into media that matters. Kaufman describes video's vital role in politics, law, education, and entertainment today, only 130 years since the birth of film. He explains how best to produce video, distribute it, clear rights to it, cite it, and, ultimately, archive and preserve it. With detailed guidance on producing and deploying video and sound for publication, finding and using archival video and sound, securing rights and permissions, developing distribution strategies, and addressing questions about citation, preservation, and storage—across the broadest spectrum of platforms, publications, disciplines, and formats—The Moving Image equips readers for the medium's continued ascendance in education, publishing, and knowledge dissemination in the decades to come. And, modeled in part on Strunk and White's classic, The Elements of Style, it's also a highly enjoyable read. Peter B. Kaufman is Senior Program Officer at MIT Open Learning. He is the author of The New Enlightenment and the Fight to Free Knowledge and founder of Intelligent Television, a video production company that works with cultural and educational institutions around the world. Ara Erickson is Vice President of Corporate Sustainability at Weyerhaeuser, where she is accountable for the development and implementation of the company's comprehensive sustainability strategy, including three areas where the company is in a unique position to participate: working forests contribution to climate change solutions, the role of sustainable products in ensuring housing for everyone, and support for thriving rural communities. She serves as a board member for American Forests, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States, is a founding steering committee member for the Women's Forest Congress, and uses her voice to be an advocate for sustainable, working forests. Ara is an authentic, compassionate, and driven leader, best known for building partnerships through collaboration, transparency and honest communication. Prior to Weyerhaeuser, she served as Director of the Green City Partnerships program with a regional conservation organization, Forterra, and as a forest-based researcher, environmental consultant and educator. She received her M.S. in Forest Resources from the University of Washington and her B.S. in Resource Management from the University of California, Berkeley. Ara Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The development of Weyerhaeuser's sustainability strategy How timber harvesting is done sustainability  Weyerhaeuser's forest carbon credit principles  Plans for achieving emissions reductions goals by 2030 Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Ara's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give to other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  I think all of us in sustainability are here because we're passionate about sustainability, but primarily there's also something that drove us here. For me, I'm passionate about forestry and forest and these products that make our lives so much better. We get warm, cozy homes to live in, we hope, and I've been able to channel my passion for sustainability and forestry at the same time. So I always recommend finding the thing that you get excited about and want to be part of, whether that's outdoor recreation or literature, whatever it might be, and then channel sustainability through that passion.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  I love that sustainability is finding its way into all the nooks and crannies inside companies, whether that's company level strategy or employee volunteering programs or community involvement. That it is so broad and that can make it really complex, but I just love that I'm seeing sustainability showing up in so many levels of companies now, and so many very important decision making levers and places where employees feel really connected to it and communities are directly impacted. To me, that feels like sustainability has reached the point where people are recognizing how important it is to help drive strategy and help drive outcomes for both their own employees and and their communities.  What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read?  I have one sitting on my desk right now that I just started to read. I'm about a quarter of the way through it and it's been wonderful so far. It's called Chief Sustainability Officers at Work: How CSOs Build Successful Sustainability and ESG Strategies and by Chrissa Pagitsas. It's a great compilation of an incredible amount of leadership from all different types of companies on how they've been able to drive these strategies in their companies.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  I have a set of things that I rely on a lot. One of them is just the basic Strunk and White old book which has been around for a long time. But as sustainability professionals we really need to know how to write compelling pieces that are clear, so I always have that in my toolkit. I also think it's really important for us sustainability professionals to be able to take care of ourselves and make certain that we still have the energy to keep doing our work well, whatever that means for our daily practices of self care. I personally do a lot of meditation and journaling in the morning and tea drinking in order to really help settle me into a space where I can be really productive and impactful when I show up to my job. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Weyerhaeuser?  We have a full website at www.weyerhaeuser.com. At www.weyerhaeuser.com/sustainability we have tons of information and resources, great examples that we talked about today like the principles documents and our carbon record. There's some fun videos on there as well. Then there's a ton of information about forestry in general that's put out by some organizations like the National Alliance of Forest Owners, and there's a great tool that the American Wood Council has created that's about fiber sourcing and where your wood comes from. You can actually type in the grade stamp of the lumber if you happen to buy a piece of lumber and find out the region it comes from. Those are both sites that we've really helped generate a lot of the content for and fed materials to so that people can be learning about these incredible forests and the products that come from them.

Two days after a season-ending loss to the Houston Texans, controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk fired Carthon, announced that coach Brian Callahan will get a second season in charge and director of football operations Chad Brinker will be the man in charge of the roster and the search for Carthon's replacement. This is the third straight season that Strunk has made a major move within the team's leadership, and the inconsistency in who she trusts and promotes is cause for concern.

4 Questions Students Must Ask to Avoid Writing Fluff

Truth Tribe with Douglas Groothuis

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2024 10:39

What is Fluff? Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true. (Ecclesiastes 12:9-10, NIV). Harry Frankfurt in On BS: The BS-er…is neither on the side of the true nor on the side of the false. His eye is not on the facts at all, as the eyes of the honest man and of the liar are, except insofar as they may be pertinent to his interest in getting away with what he says. He does not care whether the things he says describe reality correctly. He just picks them out, or makes them up, to suit his purpose.[1] Fluff is whatever is extraneous, superfluous, or unseemly. Fluff is the opposite of the substantial or the fundamental. Physical fluff is never desired and easily floats away. No one wants it, unless it is in a pillow, perhaps. Some students pad their papers in order to meet word requirements. Such padding is always fluff and may involve going down rabbit trails unrelated to the thesis of the writing. Much fluff today is autobiographical, and there are far too many memoirs.[2] Entire books may be autobiographical fluff, such as the egregious Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller and myriad others.[3] Contemporary writers often cannot resist talking about themselves even when it is irrelevant to the point they should be making. One of the great principles of the classic writing guide, Elements of Style, is to keep yourself in the background. This is what Strunk and White write: Write in a way that draws the reader's attention to the sense and substance of the writing, rather than to the mood and temper of the author. If the writing is solid and good, the mood and temper of the writer will eventually be revealed and not at the expense of the work. Therefore, the first piece of advice is this: to achieve style, begin by affecting none—that is, place yourself in the background.[4] Exhibitionism is one of the great sins and blind spots of our age. Consider Victor Frankl's comments about why he reluctantly decided not to anonymously publish his classic book, Man's Search for Meaning: "I had intended to write this book anonymously, using my prison number only. But when the manuscript was completed, I saw that as an anonymous publication, it would lose half its value and that I must have the courage to state my convictions openly. I therefore refrained from deleting any of the passages, in spite of an intense dislike of exhibitionism."[5] Fluff may also be unseemly, which may or may not include gratuitous personal references. The unseemly is what is inappropriate—the lude, crude, or rude. What Paul applies to speech should be applied to writing. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29). To tighten it up: Fluff is what is unnecessary in a piece of writing, either due to BS, redundancy, exhibitionism, or literary boorishness. Fluff can be avoided by removing unnecessary content, by keeping yourself in the background, and by being polite. To avoid fluff, ask yourself these questions: Am I aiming at objective truth? Have I written more than is needed? Have I said too much about myself? Have I been off-putting or offensive to my reader? [1] Frankfurt, Harry G. On Bullshit (p. 56). Princeton University Press. Kindle Edition. [2] I wrote a memoir, which I attempted to justify in the first chapter. Douglas Groothuis, “Introduction,” Walking Through Twilight: A Wife's Illness—A Philosopher's Lament (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 2017). [3] Donald Miller, Blue Like Jazz (New York: Harper Horizon, 2003). The first paragraph of page 103 is the most absurd and egregious collection of falsehoods I have encountered. [4] Strunk JR., William; White, E.B. The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition. Pandora's Box. Kindle Edition. [5] Frankl, Viktor E. Man's Search for Meaning (pp. 6-7). Beacon Press. Kindle Edition. Stanley Eric Goodman was born on July 6, 1963 to Willard and Essie Goodman in Scott County, Tennessee. He was married at a young age to Sherry Goodman and was a father of 3. When Stanley and Sherry split, Sherry moved to Cleveland and the 2 children spent time with both their mother and father. Terri Sue Lawson Goodman was born February 10, 1963 to Clifford and Mary and was described as a sweet and sensible person who had overcome a tragedy in her 20's. Terri Sue was almost killed in a car crash in 1985, which had her hospitalized for months and years of therapy to learn how to walk and talk again. She was never able to work after the accident but she eventually met Stanley. And they married. In February of 2000 DCS was called to the Black Fox Elementary School where 8 year old BG had confided in her teacher about the sexual abuse she was receiving at the hands of her step father Hubert. Hope Tharp, the Child Protective Services team leader in Cleveland, Tennessee, responded to a courtesy request from the Scott County Department of Children's Services to investigate allegations of sexual abuse of B.G. by her stepfather. Ms. Tharp interviewed B.G. and B.G.'s mother. As a result of the reports and the investigation, the decision was made to remove B.G. and two other children from the Sexton home.  Hubert explained that B.G. was getting this information from her sister and her father saying, Mr. Goodman had told BG to say those things so he could get full custody of the children. On May 16, 2000, Bradley County Sheriff's Detective Tony Alvarez had responded to a complaint initiated by a teacher at the Black Fox Elementary School. Along with DCS, Detective Alvarez spoke with B.G. regarding the allegation. He later spoke with Hubert regarding the allegation and advised him of his Miranda rights. Hubert Sexton waived those rights and signed a written waiver.  Mr. Goodman was not too happy about that arrangement and he was just getting the children to trump up some false allegations of improper sexual conduct. On May 20, 2000, Hubert and Preston went to work around 8:00 a.m. They left work around 12:30 p.m. Hubert drove Mr. Adams to the Budget Inn, where Mr. Adams was living at the time. Around 6:00 p.m. Hubert went to Maxi Muffler to visit with Clinton Daniel Mason, a mechanic at the Cleveland store. He asked Mr. Mason for his gun, a .22 rifle. Hubert. When they arrived at The Muffler Shop, Hubert  informed Mr. Mason that he had to "take care of some business in Scott County." E.G. accompanied the Strunk family to the races. Due to rain, the races were cancelled and the family returned home around 8:30 p.m. The Strunks took E.G. to her home around 11:00 p.m. Vella Strunk observed that no lights were on in the house. Vella Strunk remained in her car while E.G. went inside the house to get her some coffee. After E.G. returned with her coffee, Vella Strunk went home. EG then went back inside, went to her room and fell asleep for the night. The next morning, Vella Strunk telephoned her brother, Stanley Goodman. There was no answer at the Goodman residence. Within ten minutes, E.G. telephoned Vella Strunk, crying. E.G. told Vella that her father and stepmother were still in bed and that they had blood on them. Vella Strunk drove to her brother's home where she discovered the bodies of Stanley and Terry Goodman. She then called the police. The jury found, as to each count of first degree murder, that the proof established the aggravating circumstance that the murder was committed for the purpose of avoiding, interfering with, or preventing a lawful arrest or prosecution of the defendant or another. The jury determined that the statutory aggravating circumstance outweighed any mitigating circumstances and, therefore, imposed sentences of death for the murders of Stanley and Terry Sue.Support the show

Tennessee Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk fired coach Mike Vrabel on Tuesday, two days after the final game of the 2023 season. Vrabel is the third-winningest coach in franchise history and one of three to guide the team at least as far as the AFC Championship game. ... The decision was not necessarily a shock, given reports about his job status in recent weeks. However, Strunk offered no concrete answer to the question of why she made the move, and general manager Ran Carthon followed up with even less clarity on the issue at a press conference. Similarly, no one was willing – or able – to provide any detail about what they hope to find in Vrabel's replacement. ... Vrabel was 6-18 over his final 24 regular season contests, but posted a winning record (54-45) overall. Plus, his winning percentage in games decided by seven points or fewer was even better, and his winning percentage in games decided by three points or fewer was even better than that. Regardless of overall talent, his teams displayed consistency in several key areas that will be difficult to replicate. ... The general thinking is that Vrabel, the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year, will get another job as quickly as he wants to get back to work. At present, there are six other NFL franchises in search of a head coach, but his ultimate destination might be someplace else. ... Sunday's 28-20 victory over Jacksonville was a satisfying end to an otherwise disappointing season, and a fitting way to close the book on the Titans' tenures of two notable performers, Derrick Henry and Rayn Tannehill – and ultimately their head coach.

Build a Better Business Book: How to Plan, Write, and Promote a Book That Matters. A Comprehensive Guide for Authors by Josh Bernoff About the Book: Your brain burns with a powerful idea worth sharing. Could writing a business book spread that idea, create real change, and launch your career on the path to visibility and influence? Definitely. But don't start by piling up words. Instead, focus on the story. What urgent problem does your reader face? How can they solve it? And what journey must your readers take as you guide them from confusion to understanding, action, and success? Build a Better Business Book is the first accessible and comprehensive guide for authors who want to create impact. Josh Bernoff, a bestselling author, veteran editor, and insightful writing coach with decades of experience on 45 successful book projects, explains the systematic way to refine your idea and then research, write, publish, and promote a book that matters. Learn how to: Build your book not just from ideas but from people and their compelling stories — and how you can research and tell those stories. Write a first chapter that creates powerful motivation by emotionally connecting with readers. Select among the three major publishing models — traditional, self-publishing, and “hybrid” — on the axes of speed, cost, and influence. Plan your book as a project, then efficiently execute that plan with a low-stress, high-potency tool: the fat outline. Structure chapters that no reader can put down. Collaborate with coauthors, editors, and ghostwriters without excessive bloodshed. Promote your book to maximize your sales, revenue, and influence. Josh Bernoff's book projects have generated over $20 million for their authors. This guide includes the results of an extensive author survey and secrets from interviews with successful business authors like Jay Baer, Laura Gassner Otting, Phil M. Jones, Joe Pulizzi, and Scott Stratten. Don't waste valuable energy without accomplishing your goals. Construct your business book as a compelling story, and you won't just get your words in print. You'll create change in the minds of your readers. And that is the first step to making a meaningful impact on the world. About the Author: Josh Bernoff is an expert on how business books can propel thinkers to prominence. Book projects on which he has collaborated have generated over $20 million for their authors. Josh's previous book was Writing Without Bullshit: Boost Your Career by Saying What You Mean (HarperBusiness, 2016). Toronto's Globe and Mail called it “a Strunk and White for the modern knowledge worker.” He is the co-author of Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies (Harvard Business Press, 2008), which was a BusinessWeek bestseller. He works closely with nonfiction authors as an advisor, coach, editor, or ghostwriter. He has authored, coauthored, or ghostwritten eight business books, and has collaborated on more than 50 nonfiction books. He was formerly Senior Vice President, Idea Development at Forrester Research, where he spent 20 years analyzing technology and business. Prior to Forrester, Josh spent 14 years in startup companies in the Boston area. Josh has a mathematics degree from Penn State University and later studied mathematics in the Ph.D. program at MIT.
