Welcome to the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast! In this episode, Dr. Sarah Smith is joined by Sue Peters—a healthcare improvement leader with a background in audiology and extensive experience in quality improvement for clinical teams. Sue and Sarah dive into the day-to-day challenges clinicians face, from the dreaded in-basket workload to the complexities of team communication and patient care coordination. Together, they explore practical strategies to streamline processes, clarify roles within clinical teams, and leverage everyone's unique skills to create more efficient and sustainable practice environments. Sue shares actionable tips on offloading non-physician work, optimizing EMRs, and effectively onboarding patients—all while ensuring that both providers and patients benefit from these improvements. Plus, they chat about breaking old habits, embracing true teamwork, and even finding ways to take things out of everyone's overloaded "backpack." Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: Embrace Team-Based Care: Don't try to shoulder all the work alone. By clearly defining roles and empowering every member of the care team—from RNs and LPNs to MOAs—practices can improve patient access, reduce wait times, and allow clinicians to focus on what matters most. Optimize Your EMR Processes: Standardizing how we populate and use EMR data not only improves patient care, but also makes it much easier to delegate and manage population health. Consistency in documentation enables actionable reporting—and lets the right team member handle the right task. Involve Everyone in Change: Successful quality improvement requires all voices at the table, not just physicians. When team members participate in designing solutions, they're more engaged, invested, and open to new ways of working. Sue Peters Bio: Sue Peters is a Healthcare Improvement Leader working with Primary Care and Specialty Teams to achieve true team-based care through Quality Improvement. Imagine a team where every member has a critical role in patient care and is working to top of scope, allowing you to focus on the work for which you are highly trained - It is possible. -------------- Would you like to view a transcript of this episode? On this week's episode, Chris and Sylvie struggle to find anything of value to say about a show for preschoolers that is the epitome of lazy edutainment. A cobbled-together variety program which lets the creators of Thomas the Tank Engine and stock footage from 60 years ago pad the runtime, there is nothing to the paltry animation of Salty's Lighthouse beyond the decades old footage it records over. Yes, turns out this was a secret CanaDUB episode all-along that took the British nautical puppet show TUGS and made it more Canadian. We had nothing to talk about here, so we mostly let Sylvie politely hijack the episode to teach Chris about the rarely discussed Canadian classic Theodore Tugboat. We pulled a real Salty's Lighthouse and padded our own runtime this week...yet we showed more effort, somehow. Episodes covered for the podcast are Episode 19 & 20 "Strike Up the Band" & "Blanketly Blank." Animation directed by Sue Peters and Jeff Hall, and written by Barry Harman, Steve Edelman, and Scott Guy respectively. Original airdates February 6th and February 13th, 1998. Welcome back to the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast! In this episode of the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast, Dr. Sarah Smith is joined by special guest Sue Peters. Sue is an expert in optimizing teams and systems for better patient care in family medicine. They discuss the importance of distributing responsibility among a team that supports each other, the need for standard processes in clinics, and the role of practice facilitators in implementing sustainable models of clinical medicine. They also dive into the issue of workload management, the benefits of electronic medical records, and the value of team members working to their full potential. Join us for an enlightening conversation on enhancing patient care through effective team building in clinical medicine. Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: 1️⃣ Distributing Responsibility: Sue emphasized the importance of distributing responsibility among a supportive team. Building a strong team takes time, but it's crucial for progress. 2️⃣ Investing in Primary Care Teams: We discussed the significance of investing in primary care teams and funding those positions. By lightening team members' workload and delegating non-physician tasks, we can create capacity and space to focus on tasks that truly make a difference to patients and provider workload. 3️⃣ Collaboration and Quality Improvement: Engaging with someone who has quality improvement methodology and practice facilitation is crucial. Practice facilitators are available in different jurisdictions and can help teams develop capacity for improvement. By constantly identifying issues, discussing solutions, and implementing consistent plans, we can gradually improve patient care and create a better working environment for healthcare providers. Sue Peters Bio: Sue Peters is a certified Clinical Audiologist, Organizational Change Professional and Lean Leader with 34 years of healthcare experience working in both the public and private sector. As a Practice Facilitator, Sue supports physicians, both specialty and primary care, and other clinical team members achieve work-life balance and improve care delivery within their practice environments. She coaches teams to build their capacity for Quality Improvement and adopt a mind-set of continuous improvement. I'm really enjoying these episodes with my FOCUSED community, and I hope you are too! Today, Sue Peters is with me, and we dive into the difficult world of chronic pain through an ADHD lens. When Sue was finally diagnosed with ADHD in her mid-twenties, she had already identified that there was something different about her and had even tried reaching out for help. But ignorant and insensitive “experts” failed to give her the guidance and support she needed, which left her with a lot of rejection, shame, and emotional pain from childhood through young adulthood. Everything compounded when her family went through a scary surgery situation with her child, and one day she woke up with immobility and excruciating pain that changed the course of her life.Sue and I discuss how things like trauma and emotional wounds can eventually weaken the immune system to the point of breaking down physical health, and how important it is to receive therapy and coaching in a way that's sensitive to ADHD. Listen in to hear her incredible story of resilience with ADHD and chronic pain, and how she's working through it all at her own pace, finding her path, surrounded by community. Are you being treated for ADHD but still aren't quite achieving your potential? Try my group coaching program FOCUSED and experience the difference. Be sure to hang out with me on Instagram HERE.Shout-outs:@kamden_adhd
