This week on the Scary Spirits Podcast, we pay solemn tribute to two titans of terror—the incomparable Peter Cushing and Sir Christopher Lee—by revisiting the chilling 1972 cult classic, Horror Express. Step aboard a snowbound locomotive hurtling through the frozen desolation of Siberia, where something ancient, unspeakable, and utterly relentless stalks its prey beneath the dim glow of gaslight. Civilization fades with every passing mile… and survival becomes a most uncertain luxury. Your hosts, Karen and Greg, guide you through this atmospheric nightmare with equal parts wit and reverence, dissecting the film's eerie legacy, unforgettable performances, and the dread that lingers long after the final frame fades to black. And what, you may ask, is terror without a proper indulgence? In honor of this devilish journey, they sip upon the elegantly crafted “Beautiful Friendship” cocktail—a drink as refined as it is deceptively potent. So, steel your nerves, pour yourself something worthy… and join us for a celebration of gothic horror, cinematic brilliance, and the enduring legacy of two gentlemen who defined the genre. All aboard… the Horror Express awaits. Beautiful Friendship Cocktail • 1 pinch cinnamon• 3/4 oz Cointreau• 1/2 oz fresh lime juice• 5 leaves fresh mint• 1 1/2 oz Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum• 1/4 oz simple syrup• 2 oz soda• 1 bar spoon tamarind concentrate Instructions: Add the mint leaves and simple syrup to the bottom of a shaker and gently muddle to release the mint oils. Add the rum, Cointreau, lime juice, tamarind concentrate, and a pinch of cinnamon. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain the mixture over fresh ice into a tall Collins glass. Top with club soda, gently stir to combine, and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. Source: cointreau.com A Brief Synopsis: Alexander Saxton, a brilliant British anthropologist researching in the Russian Far East, boards the Trans-Siberian Express with his latest discovery, a frozen specimen he hopes to prove is the missing link. But en route to Europe, passengers begin to turn up dead, and terror engulfs the train as Saxton and his partner, Dr. Wells, struggle to contain a mysterious — and increasingly murderous — force with the power to control minds. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: We learn about the Trans-Siberian Railway. Karen tells us all bout the Toy Poodle dog breed. Dr. Karen tells us why we have fold in our brains. Greg makes an Iron Maiden reference. Our rating of the film: This movie was OK. It took us 3 cocktails to get through it. Take our online survey! This week's guest is Kathleen Saxton, who dives deep into the complexities of narcissism, family dynamics, and the painful journey of healing from childhood wounds.Kathleen breaks down the three types of narcissists, ‘grandiose', ‘covert', and ‘malignant', offering an eye-opening framework, particularly highlighting covert narcissists who use pity and victimhood for supply. She explores how children of narcissists often stop loving themselves, losing their sense of identity in the process, and how family roles like the golden child, scapegoat, and lost child perpetuate unhealthy patterns. Kathleen also explains why those raised by narcissistic parents tend to attract similar partners, as dysfunction feels like home.Through practical tools like the "empty chair technique" and her three-step recovery roadmap: accept, have compassion for yourself, and design your future, Kathleen offers actionable steps to begin healing. Start with something tiny and plod.”A lighter finish includes an overrated/underrated game (champagne, dressing up, height, hustle culture, social media, coconut oil), Salima's plan to audition again, and why dark humour matters when things get rough.“A sense of humour is absolutely vital. David W. Saxton's God's Battle Plan for the Mind (Reformation Heritage Books, 2015) presents a compelling argument for recovering the lost art of biblical meditation, a discipline once central to Puritan piety and spiritual formation. Saxton argues that the modern church, though rich in theological resources and preaching, suffers from a superficial spirituality precisely because it has neglected meditation—a practice essential for transforming doctrinal knowledge into heartfelt godliness. Drawing extensively from the Puritans and Scripture, Saxton defines biblical meditation as the intentional, sustained, and spiritual reflection on God's Word. Unlike Eastern or mystical forms of meditation that promote mental emptying, biblical meditation involves filling the mind with divine truth, leading to spiritual transformation and godly living. The book is structured thematically, beginning with the importance of meditation, contrasting it with unbiblical forms, and moving through practical guidance on how to meditate—whether occasional or deliberate. It outlines occasions for meditation, offers advice on selecting subjects, and highlights both the benefits and the spiritual enemies of the practice. Saxton concludes with pastoral encouragement to begin and persist in this vital spiritual discipline. Rev. Saxton is pastor of Cambridge Bible Church in Cambridge, Ohio. Salima Saxton is a writer, an actor and a coach, and she co-presents the podcast ‘Women are Mad'. She has 3 children aged 9, 12 and 15 and she recently caught my attention with her amazing Moth story about a Valentine's Day announcement by her husband which changed her life. It's 5 minutes of supreme story telling; you must listen! Salima and I talked about how she grew up with an alcoholic Dad and was always trying to be a ‘good girl'. Now she embraces a messy, crazy family life and says it's vital to show up as yourself. Early in our chat we also confessed that we are both ‘secret control freak' mums, but let's not concentrate on that! I love Salima's idea of connecting with your 8 year old self and maybe doing some of the things that SHE used to love doing. Now, where are my rollerskates...?Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. Hosted on Acast. On the evening of October 6, 1898, forty-eight-year-old George Saxton, brother of First Lady Ida McKinley, was riding his bike to the home of his lady friend Eva Althouse when an assailant dressed in black emerged from the shadows and fired two shots. Wounded, George crawled towards Eva's house and had just reached the front steps when the shooter approached and fired two more shots, killing him almost instantly.Within hours of Saxton's death, his former mistress, Anna George, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. For more than a decade, Saxton and George had been carrying on a scandalous relationship that began as an illicit affair until Saxton successfully convinced George to divorce her husband, supposedly with promises to marry her. However, once she was a single woman again, Saxton's enthusiasm for marriage had cooled and over time his interest in Anna waned. Anna George's sensational arrest and trial dominated headlines for months and, as Saxton was extremely unpopular, many people sympathized with the accused woman and even reveled in Saxton's death. After an intense and closely watched three-week trial, Anna George was acquitted of the murder and soon after she faded out of the spotlight, leaving the murder of George Saxton officially unsolved to this day.Thank you to the glorious David White, of the Bring Me The Axe Podcast, for research!ReferencesAkron Beacon Journal. 1906.
