Trailblazing journalist and proud Gamilaroi woman Brooke Boney opens up like never before in All of It, her powerful debut essay collection. Like many millennial women, Brooke Boney is navigating a society that expects her to chase it all – career, success and personal fulfillment – while doing so under an unforgiving public gaze. In her highly anticipated essay collection, All of It, she reflects on the pressures of life in the spotlight as the first Indigenous host of Australian commercial breakfast television and now as an ambitious scholar striving to inspire others. With honesty and insight, she explores the competing expectations placed on young women today. In conversation with Jacinta Parsons, the charismatic and thought-provoking Boney delves into what drives her sense of purpose and meaning while grappling with the generational impacts of colonisation, love, friendship, fertility and ambition. Rachel Kushner’s new novel Creation Lake tells the story of Sadie Smith, an American spy-for-hire working in the secretive world of privately contracted surveillance. Tasked with infiltrating a commune of anarchists in rural France, she becomes entranced by a mysterious cult-leader-like figure named Bruno Lacombe who believes that freedom from the pain of the modern condition can only be achieved through a return to the ancient past. Creation Lake is both a canny homage to French noir and an incisive critique of spy-novel clichés – more than that, it is stylish, witty and audaciously cerebral. Here, the two-time National Book Award finalist and Booker Prize-shortlisted author sits down to discuss this dazzling work of double-crossing, dark humour and dangerous games, with moderator Rebecca Harkins-Cross. I don't know who needs to hear this, but the stories you've been telling yourself about who you are and what you're capable of aren't even true. In this episode, we dive deep into the narratives that limit us, questioning the doubts and fears that shape our lives. The good news is you have the power to rewrite them—and I'm hoping this episode helps you begin to do just that.I'm sharing a personal story about how I once believed my voice didn't matter and how I finally broke free from that limiting belief. We'll also reflect on how these stories often stem from childhood or societal conditioning, and why they don't have to define you. It's time to challenge the narratives that hold you back and step into the truth of who you really are, friend. If you're ready to rewrite your own story, there's also a guided exercise in here to help you identify and reframe the beliefs that are no longer serving you. This episode is all about shifting your mindset and embracing the belief that you are more than enough—and always have been. You'll wanna grab a journal for this one.Reflection prompts from this episode:• What is a belief that has been limiting you? • Where did this belief come from? •  Is this an absolute truth? Is there any evidence that contradicts this belief? Challenge the belief with facts and experiences that prove it wrong.• Rewrite this belief into one that empowers you.• Now that you've reframed the belief, it's time to breathe life into it. Speak it out loud.• Close your eyes and imagine yourself fully embodying this new belief. Visualize what your life would look like if you truly believed this story, then write down what you see.Credits:Music - "I Enjoy My Space" by Sarah, The Illstrumentalist (via Epidemic Sound)Other episodes that may resonate:Hold Space for Self-Doubt, but Don't Stay for TeaAffirmations to Fill Your CupTransforming Pain into PurposeSupport the showHosted by Steph R. I used to have a vision of who I'd be by now, and honestly? It doesn't match my reality. But instead of resisting, I'm learning to lean in, trust the unfolding, and release the pressure of "shoulds."We're talking about letting go of timelines, reframing setbacks, and embracing the discomfort of not knowing. A runaway favourite of book clubs the world over, Bonnie Garmus's debut novel Lessons in Chemistry transports readers to early 1960s California. Elizabeth Zott – single mother and brilliant chemist – unexpectedly finds herself hosting a television cooking show, and changes hearts and minds in the process. Inspired by Garmus's mother's generation of overlooked and under-acknowledged women, Lessons in Chemistry examines the gender pay gap, misogyny in the workplace and women's rights. At her only Melbourne event on her first Australian tour, Garmus sits down with host Astrid Edwards to discuss her breakthrough novel. Together, they explore her funny and feisty heroine, the surprising fan phenomenon of Six-Thirty the dog, and how the novel's historical setting sheds light on the truths of today. This event was presented in partnership with RMIT Culture. From the perspective of Western science, plants have long been considered unaware, passive life forms; essentially, rocks that happen to grow. But there's something in the air in the world of plant science. New research suggests that plants are aware of the world around them to a far greater extent than previously understood. Plants may be able to sense acoustics, communicate with each other, and make choices… all this without a brain. These findings are fueling a debate, perhaps even a scientific revolution, which challenges our fundamental definitions of life, intelligence, and consciousness.Featuring Zoë Schlanger. SUPPORTOutside/In is made possible with listener support. He studied electrical signaling in plants and argued that plants use language. Read about his life and work in Orion. This is the now famous study by David Rhoades. Rhoades was derided for his “talking trees” theory, and only was proved correct after his death. A century ago, coastal dunes threatened to overwhelm the city of Florence, Oregon. The sand swallowed roads, highways, and houses. When “Dune” author Frank Herbert visited the area in 1957, he was stunned by the awesome power of the sand. Eventually, it inspired his fictional desert planet, Arrakis. But now, the dunes that inspired “Dune” are disappearing. To solve the sand problem, the US Forest Service planted dunes with non-native beachgrass, hoping its strong roots would keep the dunes in place. The strategy worked… too well. The grass spread, out-competing native species and transforming the dunes. At one popular spot, roughly 60% of what was once open sand is now gone.Producer Justine Paradis traveled to the Oregon Coast to see the mountains of sand which inspired a sci-fi classic, and meet the people working to save them.Featuring Dina Pavlis, Patty Whereat Phillips, and Jesse Beers. SUPPORTOutside/In is made possible with listener support.
