They lead a popular course called “Cults and Popular Culture,” which examines, among other things, the idea of naming something a cult, and the reasons human beings are so obsessed with them. In an interview with Berkeley News, Saha discussed why it's important to teach students, especially at a top research university like Berkeley, to look past the label and dig deeper: What was the original intention of a particular organization later labeled a cult? What did it offer? What were its practices? Who joined and why? What does it tell us about spirituality and culture in America?“What makes a cult different from a religion or a sect, and why the word cult so often produces revulsion or compulsion. She has also been bi-sexual as well.Lynn is currently a lawyer-turned-freelance-editor who edits books, articles, screenplays, and everything in between. In fact, they didn't appear to have very many answers at all. In his desire to seek guidance and reasoning, he began to uncover things he quickly understood he'd never be able to unsee. Despite his devout upbringing, and attending church multiple times each week, he began to see the cracks in the lessons being taught by the church, vs the choices they were showing him through their actions. After specific events that caused even his parents to finally leave their congregation, he realized he not only didn't want to go to church anymore, but he wasn't even sure he believed in the teachings of the bible. In this episode, Rich walks us through his deconstruction journey, and what he has experienced in the years since finally identifying as an “atheist.”____________________________Find this episode, and others here:Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2EHJGf8kGbSV9SRbqsfYKSApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-up-fundie/id1602008078Amazon Music:https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ad6ac91e-c2fb-47d6-8658-df8aed941eac/growing-up-fundieSupport us on Buzzsprout Subscriptions:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1908164/supporters/newSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/sydneydavisjrjrYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5QuI5etVfbJoTVAhbRGMkADiscord:https://discord.gg/XQNG4nD5Join us on Reddit on r/GrowingUpFundie: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingUpFundie/More about the host, Sydney Davis Jr. Jr.sydneydavisjrjr.comThink you might make a great guest, or know someone who would be?Apply for yourself, or nominate someone here:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeHiy8KYW38tyKUD6MbFmOwCKdeWVHAbIA9qst1RBQf4rRPXg/viewform?usp=share_linkSupport the show

At one time, James Aames led worship at a megachurch, held Bible studies, gave sermons, witnessed on the streets, went on mission trips, and never missed his daily devotional regimen. He walked the walk and talked the talk. But forcing his faith didn't work for him, and he was soon miserable. At 33 years old, he finally called it quits.Since then he's been writing, reading, thinking, and healing. In an effort to right the wrongs he feels that he's done to so many people through his ministries, he's written "How to Become a non-Christian,” a book that provides instructions for how to leave your faith.TikTok: @ioncewasfound.https://jamesaames.substack.com/_______________________________________________________________Find this episode, and others here:Website:www.growingupfundiepodcast.comSpotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2EHJGf8kGbSV9SRbqsfYKSApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-up-fundie/id1602008078Amazon Music:https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ad6ac91e-c2fb-47d6-8658-df8aed941eac/growing-up-fundiePatreon:https://www.patreon.com/sydneydavisjrjrBuzzsprout Subscriptions:https://www.buzzsprout.com/https://www.buzzsprout.com/1908164/supporters/new1908164/supporters/newYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5QuI5etVfbJoTVAhbRGMkADiscord:https://discord.gg/XQNG4nD5Our Subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingUpFundie/More about the host, Sydney Davis Jr.

In her book "Permission Granted, Take the Bible into Your Own Hands," she encourages people of faith to explore the texts on their own, freed from long-held myths and misconceptions; experience the Bible anew; and appreciate this holy book for what it is, not what we think it should be. Dr. Bird has taught in New Jersey, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Oregon and Virginia. Her varied background within:the United Methodist Church, education in a Presbyterian affiliated institution, time spent in several ministerial contexts, six years of graduate work in biblical studies, and more than 20 years of teaching in classrooms of all kinds inform her approach to having quite honest, and sometimes difficult, conversations about what is actually to be found in the scriptures of the Christian Bible.Find out more on her website:https://www.jennifergracebird.com/bio_______________________________________________________________Find this episode, and others here:Website:www.growingupfundiepodcast.comSpotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2EHJGf8kGbSV9SRbqsfYKSApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-up-fundie/id1602008078Amazon Music:https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ad6ac91e-c2fb-47d6-8658-df8aed941eac/growing-up-fundiePatreon:https://www.patreon.com/sydneydavisjrjrBuzzsprout Subscriptions:https://www.buzzsprout.com/https://www.buzzsprout.com/1908164/supporters/new1908164/supporters/newYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5QuI5etVfbJoTVAhbRGMkADiscord:https://discord.gg/XQNG4nD5Our Subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingUpFundie/More about the host, Sydney Davis Jr.

Aaron Yost identifies as a member of the Reformed faith, who often align themselves with Calvinistic beliefs. According to Encyclopedia Brittannica: (The Reform Church) sees the Bible as the only source of truth, and they accept two sacraments—baptism and Communion, or the Lord's Supper. Along with other Protestants the Reformed churches also believe that people are saved by having faith in God, not because of anything they do. The Reformed churches also believe in predestination.Predestination is the idea that God decided before you were even born whether or not you were going to heaven, or going to hell. In this episode, Aaron shares his thoughts on God, his faith, his predestined future, and what it means to accept the sovereignty of God.Aaron is a member of the Conversation Coalition, a team of four Christians and Four Atheists who have live (and free-to-attend) discussions over important and often polarizing topics related to faith and the Bible. When Ring was a child, they were raised within a strict Foursquare household. As they put it: “Foursquare is very much Pentecostal lite (same great flavor now with zero snake bites).”1Ring remained active in their church until they joined the US military, where they also came to recognize themselves as a trans/enby individual. Nathan is a talented Jazz musician, veteran of the Army National Guard, and a former member of the Assemblies of God Evangelical Church. After being raised with strict rules related to dating, worship, socialization, and morality, Nathan began to question what he was being told in sermons, vs what he began to see, and the people he began to meet in the "real" world. Through the lens of a person who knows they can't undo the past, and can only move forward from here, Nathan shares his story on personal growth, and how he's accepted his past as a learning lesson that he can use to brighten his future. _______________________________________________________________Find this episode, and others here:Website:www.growingupfundiepodcast.comSpotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2EHJGf8kGbSV9SRbqsfYKSApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-up-fundie/id1602008078Amazon Music:https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ad6ac91e-c2fb-47d6-8658-df8aed941eac/growing-up-fundiePatreon:https://www.patreon.com/sydneydavisjrjrBuzzsprout Subscriptions:https://www.buzzsprout.com/https://www.buzzsprout.com/1908164/supporters/new1908164/supporters/newYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5QuI5etVfbJoTVAhbRGMkADiscord:https://discord.gg/XQNG4nD5Our Subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingUpFundie/More about the host, Sydney Davis Jr.

As a child, he took pride in memorizing thousands of Bible verses, and listening to the sermons of famous Evangelical pastors on the radio with his parents. After being homeschooled throughout his youth, Tim attended the now-infamous Bob Jones University (in SC) and Lancaster Bible College (in PA) for his undergrad. He also attended New Tribes Mission Institute (currently Ethnos 360), for one year, to prepare for a career in tribal evangelism and church planting. After getting sidelined by severe insomnia, Tim shifted to "secular" work, including being a customer cabinetmaker, a stock broker, a fraud analyst, and a social media manager, before transitioning this year to being a full-time YouTuber. He began his deconstruction journey in 2016, and had fully deconverted by the Fall of 2019. Through his YouTube channel,"Harmonic Atheist," Tim posts content in an effort to help his audience remove themselves from mythology-based worldviews, heal from religious trauma, and empower themselves to share their own personal stories.Checkout his episode of “Growing Up Fundie,” then find more of his content via the links below:Tim on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HarmonicAtheist/videosTim'd Linktree: https://linktr.ee/harmonicatheist______________________________________Find this episode, and others here:Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2EHJGf8kGbSV9SRbqsfYKSApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-up-fundie/id1602008078Amazon Music:https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ad6ac91e-c2fb-47d6-8658-df8aed941eac/growing-up-fundieSupport us on Buzzsprout Subscriptions:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1908164/supporters/newSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/sydneydavisjrjrYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5QuI5etVfbJoTVAhbRGMkADiscord:https://discord.gg/XQNG4nD5Join us on Reddit on r/GrowingUpFundie: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingUpFundie/More about the host, Sydney Davis Jr. Jr.sydneydavisjrjr.comThink you might make a great guest, or know someone who would be?Apply for yourself, or nominate someone here:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeHiy8KYW38tyKUD6MbFmOwCKdeWVHAbIA9qst1RBQf4rRPXg/viewform?usp=share_linkSupport the show
Rodney, the host of @TMMYT89 (Tell Me More) launched his channel only a month ago, with his first guest being Aron Ra. With such a major guest right out of the gate, Rodney proves himself to be nothing less than a self-starter with a penchant for learning, growing, and discovering. That being said, Rodney didn't always feel that way. In the beginning, he was a young teen trying to find his purpose in this world, whose first introduction to his "purpose" was through the evangelical church. Join me for episode 113, where Rodney shares his amazing journey from bible college, to a YouTube channel in search of the truth. ______________________________________Find this episode, and others here:Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2EHJGf8kGbSV9SRbqsfYKSApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-up-fundie/id1602008078Amazon Music:https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ad6ac91e-c2fb-47d6-8658-df8aed941eac/growing-up-fundieSupport us on Buzzsprout Subscriptions:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1908164/supporters/newSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/sydneydavisjrjrYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5QuI5etVfbJoTVAhbRGMkADiscord:https://discord.gg/XQNG4nD5Join us on Reddit on r/GrowingUpFundie: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingUpFundie/More about the host, Sydney Davis Jr.

Alie knew at a young age that her experiences within the Catholic church were different than most of her peers. While they were being taught that they had certain expectations, and should think or believe a certain way in order to be the ideal follower of Christ, her family allowed her to explore her creative side and break the mold. As an adult, Alie continues to push herself to express her thoughts and opinions freely, living the life she feels driven to live, instead of one she's expected to via scripture, or societal pressure. If you're a fan of wild rides, strap in for episode 110 featuring Drew Scharfenberg.Drew was raised within the Evangelical Christian church by formerly-Catholic parents who gravitated towards the conservative ideas encouraged by the Southern Baptist Convention, and the churches that associate with it. From a young age, Drew began to question many of the messages he was receiving from the pulpit, as well as the lack of diversity in the congregations he was often involved in. Through a combination of personal curiosity, his love of research, and his introduction to higher education, Drew has now learned to question everything, pursue the truth, and welcome the changes that he anticipates he'll experience as he learns and grows into the person he was meant to be.
