“You know Detroit is about the look, the feel, it's a Detroit essence to the culture.” That essence radiates through Jessica Blair, the visionary behind Jessica Blair Beauty, a proudly Black-owned beauty supply store in the heart of Rosedale Park on Grand River. From learning hair care in her grandmother's community-rooted home on Blaine Street to launching her own store after midnight shifts in psych hospitals, Jessica's journey is one of resilience and intention. “It sounded crazy, but I felt like it was God telling me — no, this is what you need to do,” she shares. Her shop bridges tradition and trend, offering everything from natural hair essentials like TGIN to bundles and silk press staples. And she's not just selling beauty — she's restoring a legacy. “It was very community oriented,” Jessica remembers of her upbringing, a value now baked into her brand. Through thefts, floods, and pandemic pivots, she turned setbacks into success. Her grand opening on February 21 marked more than a business launch — it's a celebration of Detroit beauty, Black womanhood, and the power of doing it yourself, for your people. I stopped wanting to be a pretty girl. I wanted a beauty, and that really does start from the inside.- the bright and beautiful artist KirbyNo one evokes love and positivity quite like this week’s guest: Kirby. The singer, songwriter, and activist sat down with me for an extremely honest conversation on her now viral video “How to Make A Non Racist Breakfast,” which led the Aunt Jemima brand and logo to be retired. But of course, that was not all. We talked about her childhood in Mississippi, decolonizing her beauty standards, and seeking nothing but positivity when it comes to her music. Prior to starting her own company, Chris-Tia represented Fortune 500 companies in complex business transactions involving technology and open source code. Chris-Tia earned her A.B. in Economics from Harvard University with high honors, and is a graduate of Harvard Law School. In 2015, Chris-Tia was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her treatment, she learned that having money could make the difference between living and dying when it came to treating this condition. In her observation, few organizations existed that provided support and social services to help women with transportation, childcare, parking, or seeking disability leave from their place of employment. Today, she uses her success in the beauty space to advocate for women experiencing financial difficulties, who are undergoing treatment, to highlight health disparities due to race and socio-economic factors, and to empower women to listen to their bodies through the tgin Foundation. Today in the guest chair we have Chris-Tia Donaldson, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Thank God It’s Natural (tgin), a manufacturer of natural hair and skin care products. Prior to starting tgin, Chris-Tia, a two-time Harvard graduate, worked at a top law firm in Chicago. It was there she realized that she wasn’t receiving the support she needed to advance in her career. She wasn’t willing to play the game anymore, so she decided to get out and create her own game. Like many of us, Chris-Tia struggled with her hair while navigating the corporate world. There weren’t a lot of products for kinky, curly, and wavy hair, so she set out to create a product that made her feel confident about her curls. Tgin is currently sold at Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Sally’s Beauty, Walgreens, and now Ulta. Chris-Tia is so transparent in this episode, especially when it comes to the money required to scale and maintain a business. I’m excited for you to hear! Chris-Tia Donaldson is the founder and CEO of Thank God It’s Natural (TGIN), a company that manufactures all natural hair and skin care products that she launched in 2013. A few years prior to launching the company, Chris-Tia wrote a book about natural hair after struggling with accepting her own while working in corporate America. The book and the product line were well-received, but Chris-Tia decided to keep her job as senior corporate counsel at a Fortune 100 company while she grew the business. After years of performing this delicate balancing act and enduring a months-long battle with breast cancer which is now in remission, Chris-Tia finally walked away from that job to focus on TGIN full-time earlier this year and is now pulling back the curtain to share this part of her journey in hopes that other people can learn something from it. On this episode, I talk with Chris-Tia about her incredible career and entrepreneurial journey so far, how being diagnosed with and surviving breast cancer has influenced and changed her business philosophy and outlook on life, what’s it’s been like working a high-powered job while also running a business that seems to keep growing by the day and so much more.
