Episode 45: Andrea Lisbona is the founder and CEO of Touchland. While the pandemic brought hand sanitizer to the forefront of everyone's minds, Andrea Lisbona's vision to beautify the hand sanitizer industry began over a decade ago.  In the early 2010's Andrea sought to commoditize a stale industry that hadn't seen innovation in 20 years with the creation of the moisturizing, sleek, fast evaporating, and cruelty-free sanitizing formulations from Touchland, that are available in elevated scent profiles. In 2019, Touchland closed its first year in business with over $1.5M in sales bolstered by distribution with retailers like Urban Outfitters, Revolve, Sephora, Ulta, and Target. They also had a collaboration with Disney that increased their sales by 86% within just one week launching.  Touchland is currently in over 1,500 retails doors, has won awards from Allure, and is loved by celebrities like Kris Jenner and Mindy Kaling. In this episode, Andrea discusses:  Her journey immigrating to the U.S. from Spain to pursue her brand vision How Touchland utilized social media to accelerate its business growth The impact her company has had on a relatively untouched market  If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe/follow the show and leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. I don't remember Falling Down being this racist. Rutherford Falls co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas (Twitter and Instagram) and Dino-Ray talked about the Joel Schumacher drama starring Michael Douglas and we went on one helluva journey unpacking this film about a white man who has a bad day in L.A. We talk about Ornelas's love for Robert Duvall, the great POC character actors in this film and we compare Barbara Hershey's character to Farrah Fawcett's in the iconic made-for-TV movie The Burning Bed. We also spend too much time talking about Farrah Fawcett's catalogue of made-for-TV movies. Falling Down was giving a combination of "January-6th-insurrectionists" meets "Karen-having-a-meltdown-at-the-Ulta-cash-register" energy. From bad choices in the portrayal of Asian convenient store owners to the stereotypical Black and Brown L.A. gangster trope, Falling Down is packed with racism, homophobia and everything else. It's a terribly problematic movie and not so surprisingly, it is hyper-relevant to today. P.S. Don't forget to vote for Problematic Fave to have a live podcast episode recording at SXSW next year. The multi-tasking actor, executive producer and beauty entrepreneur shares her personal journey with BoF's Imran Amed and explains how she unlocked her full potential across a variety of pursuits.     Background:    Tracee Ellis Ross is best known for her roles in Girlfriends and Black-ish, but she is also the founder and CEO of Pattern which she launched in 2019 after more than a decade of development to address the gap in the market for products designed specifically for curly, coily, textured hair.   The Golden Globe-winning, Emmy-nominated Ross joins BoF's Imran Amed on The BoF Podcast to talk about managing the little voice in her head, killing perfectionism and cultivating self-love and acceptance.    Finding purpose and unlocking potential starts by interrogating what you love, then finding ways to merge who you are with “what makes your heart sing,” said Ross.      Key Insights:    Pattern was born out of frustration. Ross couldn't find the right tools or products to serve her needs, and never saw Black women being centred — despite sitting at the centre of culture.   Ross took learnings from developing a clothing line with JCPenney to help get her business off the ground. From there, she sought out the right partners. Key to evaluating partners was learning to be present during conversation.  In her work with Pattern and with companies like Ulta on diversity and inclusion, Ross hopes to dissolve the myth that Black hair care and beauty is a niche market.     Additional Resources:   Modernising the Black Hair Care Market: A new wave of start-ups shaking up the textured hair care space are catching the attention of major retailers and investors, grabbing more shelf space and venture capital. Building the Glossier of the Black Hair Market: With her new DTC beauty brand, Radswan, blogger-turned-entrepreneur Freddie Harrel is pitching clip-in textured hair extensions and wigs to the digitally savvy black consumer.     To subscribe to the BoF Podcast, please follow this link.

Beauty Beez - Where Women of Color Feel Celebrated

The Story of a Brand

This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.   Brittney Ogike was transitioning from a career in sports management when she noticed local beauty supply stores had significant gaps regarding the variety and quality of beauty products for women of color. She decided her next play was to fill that gap, so she founded Beauty Beez.   "These local little indie retailers that sell ethnic beauty products sell hair care for curly hair, textured hair, kinky hair - they sell limited skin care options for people with black and brown skin and then makeup offerings that are a little bit more inclusive than what you would find at a Sephora or an Ulta," Brittney says. "However, the products were limited. The products' efficacy was also very limited, and the experience was not a great experience. And I'm like, why do I feel so dissatisfied when I leave the local beauty's beauty supply?"   Even the big beauty giants like Ulta and Sephora weren't selling the niche products Brittney needed.   "We just set out on a mission to create that space where women of color can feel celebrated in a world full of beauty, dedicated specifically to our unique needs," she says.   One of the first big surprises Brittney found was that the beauty space is male-dominated. That's where her experience in sports management paid off.   "It's an industry that's catered towards women, but men - specifically white men - are a lot of the decision-makers and the CEOs and the founders," she says. "So it wasn't a big transition dealing with men in sports, then going around and dealing with men and beauty."   Times are changing, though, Brittney says, with more women founders in the beauty business.   "I think that's why there's been such a renaissance in beauty because we're seeing founders and beauty from all walks of life," she says. "I think it speaks to us women as consumers finding pain points and then finding solutions for them."   The COVID pandemic caused the brand to shut its doors for a few months, but its e-commerce site flourished.   "It was booming while our store was closed, and once we were able to open the store back up, we still had tons of foot traffic," she says. "I think the Black Lives Matter movement created that during that time. That had a tailwind effect on our business. We garnered much support from our community and attention from the national media as a whole."   In Part 1, Brittney talks about:   * Gratitude to her family and husband for their around-the-clock support. * An overview of the brand * How she pivoted from a sports management career to the beauty space. * The gap in products at many beauty stores. * The renaissance in beauty. * How she created the brand. * How COVID affected the company. * How the Black Lives Matter movement affected the brand.   Join Ramon Vela and Brittney Ogike as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Beauty Beez, visit: https://beautybeez.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Brian Lenzkes. He is an internal medicine doctor based in San Diego who has focused much of his attention on clinical nutrition. He owned his own medical practice with a group of physicians from 2004-2020. Dr. Lenzkes is co-host of the popular LowCarbMD podcast, which has more than 1.4 million downloads, and is a professional speaker. Dr. Lenzkes attended UC Irvine and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology before attending the University of Southern California Medical School. After graduating in 1999, he started his Residency Program at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. He extended his residency for a year to serve as Chief Resident before starting his private practice career at Internal Medicine Associates in 2004. Dr. Lenzkes has been voted one of the "Top Doctors" in San Diego for 11 years. Even after gaining the medical community's and his patients' respect, Dr. Lenzkes felt a void as many patients with chronic conditions became sick and required more medications. At the same time, Dr. Lenzkes battled his own weight gain while following 'standard medical advice.' In this episode, Dr. Lenzkes first reveals how he learned about a fasting and low-carb lifestyle. After trying it himself, Dr. Lenzkes lost the weight he gained while following 'standard medical advice.' Dr. Lenzkes dives deep into the correlation between high insulin levels and cardiovascular disease. If you haven't already, now is the time to check your insulin levels. Tune in as we chat about reversing type 2 diabetes, the importance of muscle mass, and the massive problem with chronic stress.   Download my free keto grocery shopping list: http://www.ketokampblueprint.com Get Keto Flex on Audible for Free (New Customers Only): https://adbl.co/36d6A24 Get Keto Flex on Audible here for current customers: https://adbl.co/3699lBm / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  Paleo Valley beef sticks, apple cider vinegar complex, organ meat complex & more. One patient found fasting successful, and Dr. Lenzkes decided to research the lifestyle. After losing weight with fasting and low-carb, Dr. Lenzkes was hesitant to share this new information with his patients.  Dr. Lenzkes got a lot of backlash from his colleagues. However, Dr. Lenzkes gets patients off insulin; not many people can say that.  [13:30] The Correlation Between High Insulin Levels and Cardiovascular Disease  There's a massive correlation between high insulin levels and cardiovascular disease. Nearly 100% of Dr. Lenzkes's patients have never had an insulin check until seeing him. You don't just wake up with type two diabetes; you have ten years to predict that diabetes is coming before you get it.  Lower your insulin levels; that way, you won't need as much insulin to get the desired effect.  Dr. Lenzkes highly recommends checking out Dr. Jason Fung's work. Find it here: https://www.thefastingmethod.com/. [19:40] How Exercise and Movement Will Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes  Most diabetics, if you look at their lab work untreated, they're going to have high triglycerides in that 300 to 500 range. LDL can be increased or low; it doesn't matter. HDL will be low.  When you get HDL right and the triglycerides come down, you feel a lot better. Exercise and stress management is essential because it helps burn sugar and your fat reserves.  When you run out of reserves, you have diabetes because the sugar stays in your bloodstream.  [31:50] The Reason Doctors Don't Talk About Diet and Lifestyle During A Visit Dr. Lenzkes uses a company called Ulta Lab Tests: https://www.ultalabtests.com/. Patients can order Ulta, or your doctor can get it for less.  Doctors have been trained a certain way, so they may not want to test for insulin.  Plus, doctors are pressed for time and are judged based on how many patients they see each day.  Many doctors only see a patient for nine minutes. It is impossible to talk about diet and lifestyle during these visits.  [36:10] Many Doctors Don't See The Truth; Instead, They Stick With What They Learned In Medical Schools  Doctors are taught that you need three meals daily, and breakfast is the day's most important meal. However, that's simply not the case.  Doctors stick with what they learn no matter what evidence says otherwise.  Many doctors will see high blood pressure and tell people to cut salt. Well, salt is high because insulin is high. High insulin causes you to retain sodium in your kidney. The answer should be to lower insulin instead.  [42:50] Lower Your Insulin Through Sleep, Exercise, and Stress Management What's more important to lower insulin, sleep or exercise? If you prioritize something, it's sleep. Next, don't be stressed out and angry. Then, eat real food that isn't processed to lower insulin.  Regular exercise will also help lower insulin.  The more muscle mass you have, the more insulin sensitive you are.  Putting muscle mass on is never going to be the wrong answer. The more muscle mass you have, the longer you live. The lower your insulin levels are, the longer you live.  [57:30] Chronic Stress Could Be Causing Your Metabolical Sickness  Fatty liver disease means you are metabolically sick. When you are metabolically sick, you risk dying from all different types of diseases.  The biggest scare we have is high insulin.  When you're under chronic stress, it's not good. Think about ways to get your priorities straight through sleep and stress management.  AND MUCH MORE! U.S. Equities closed little changed today, with the Dow Jones rising 27 basis points, while the S&P500 and Nasdaq finished down 7 points and 3 points respectively after an overall choppy trading session. Big tech, HPCs, biotech, and pharma areas of relative strength, while travel, autos, and energy lagged. Powell reiterated the possibility of a soft landing at Sintra, while Mester supports a 75bps hike if conditions are unchanged. Worries that consumer resilience is showing signs of cracking, and overall too much optimism still baked into analysts earnings estimates. General Mills higher on earnings, while McDonald's and Ulta rose on upgrades. Bed, Bath, and Beyond went down the drain after first quarter losses were worse than expected. Data Centers lower after the Financial Times reported on Jim Chanos shorting the legacy operators.
