Bex Scott is back for a new season of Pyrex with Bex and in this first episode of the season, she's diving into the rabbit hole of collectible salt and pepper shakers. Her own collection started when she found lots of them in an online estate sale and discovered that her favorites are the kitschy anthropomorphic shakers. Why were so many made? When were they popular and why? Which ones are most valuable now? Bex reveals what she learned in this episode. Salt and pepper shakers were easy to collect because of their size, small, and they were also very affordable. They date back to around 1858 though there is some dispute over the exact person who created them. Strangely, the kitschy eye-catching salt and pepper shakers were one of the few things whose sales didn't dip during the Great Depression. Because they were small and cheap, they were easy to continue producing and still affordable to collect or gift. Bex explores how salt and pepper shaker designs reflected the time periods they were created in, the themes that became most popular, the rarest and most valuable salt and pepper shakers to look for now, and a family who collected 80,000 sets and started a museum just to house them. And on today's episode it's salt and pepper time. We are talking all about salt and pepper shakers. And for me, this is a super fun topic because I have been collecting salt and pepper shakers on and off for the last couple of years. I don't have a huge collection, but they are one of the easiest things I've found to collect and to unfortunately amass in large quantities. Bex Scott: [00:01:04] So my salt and pepper shaker collection started back when I found a bunch of huge lots of them in an online estate sale, and I didn't actually know how many I was buying until I picked them up. And I probably had three moving boxes full of them, and unpacking them and cataloging them and photographing them was a massive endeavor. But one of the most fun things you can do as a collector, as you guys probably know, is unboxing and seeing what's inside, what you've bought from a sale or an online auction, and finding the little nuggets of maybe a really collectible item or something that you really love. Bex Scott: [00:01:53] So most of these salt and pepper shakers that I did buy, I ended up selling online on Facebook Marketplace or on Poshmark and some of them even on Whatnot now. And I've had a few friends on Whatnot who have had full on salt and pepper shaker sales, and it's so fun to watch them go through each of the shakers and to see just how fun they were. My favorite ones, hands down, are the kitschy salt and pepper shakers, and my great grandma had an absolute love of Lefton Bluebird, so I've been lucky enough to inherit some of her bluebirds. I have the salt and pepper shakers. I also have some of the more kitschy anthropomorphic ones. I have little kittens that are sitting on balls of yarn. I have some skunks that are sitting on logs and they're just very fun, cute, and you can store a lot of them in a small place. So this led me down a hole of looking into salt and pepper shakers, their appeal, their history. And I actually learned quite a bit about them. Bex Scott: [00:03:07] So. Salt and pepper shakers were easy for people to collect because of their size, and they were so affordable and they were just really easy to come across as well. They held on to them or passed them down. And you could, before, get a figural set of a dog, a cat, a bird for 5 to $7. Now the prices have gone up a little bit because they are in higher demand. People are reselling them and there are more that are collectible, some more than others. Salt and pepper shakers, they go back to about 1858 and they were created, some believe, by a man named John Mason who also created the Mason jar. So some people kind of refute this and are questioning whether that's actually true. But this is what I've found so far in my research. And before the salt and pepper shaker came to be, people used a bowl of salt called a salt cellar. And I've come across a lot of salt cellars in my collecting days, and a lot of the really cute ones are the little hens on the nest. I didn't actually know the purpose of a salt cellar. I knew that it was called that and you scooped the salt up with a spoon. People often added rice to it to keep the moisture at bay. And then it wasn't until 1911, when the brand Morton Salt Company introduced magnesium carbonate into salt that helped it to not clump, which is why people don't often put rice into their salt shakers now. Bex Scott: [00:05:02] So with these cute little kitschy and fun sets on home and restaurant tables, there was a high demand for the aesthetically appealing styles, and it was important for homemakers to have these on their table to show them off and to just have fun collecting them. So many people purchased them on road trips back in the day. One of the most popular types of salt and pepper shakers was the souvenir shaker that you got on your road trip that may have said the location it was from and where you got it. Now the Great Depression came along and there was no dip in salt shaker sales because it was one of the cheapest items in the kitchen. And during the 1930s and into the 1940s, the salt shakers went from glass and tin containers to the ceramic or plastic figurines. Most were from occupied Japan after a halt in production during the war. And the kitschier the better. So salt and pepper shakers became more cute, more eye-catching, and the number of salt and pepper shakers sold at local five and dimes and the fancier stores was just increasing. So some of the fun ones that you could find were the anthropomorphic fruit, fish, dogs. There's a set called the Extra Long Daschund that is really cute if you want to look up these funny little skinny wiener dog salt and pepper shakers. Bex Scott: [00:06:45] So by the 1970s, these cute figural shakers had completely gone out of style, out of production, and they were replaced by what we now have, which is a more standard boring cylindrical-style salt and pepper shaker. Don't get me wrong, there's some beautiful salt and pepper shakers out there now still, but it's just not the same anymore. And some of the ones that they were replaced by that people still collect are the Tupperware salt and pepper shakers, which were really popular during that time and not so much the conversation starters of all the cute, anthropomorphic, kitschy ones that you used to be able to find. So by the 1990s, people started to realize that the salt and pepper shakers were worth something because of the demand that collectors had made for them. And some of the most popular ones are cute little ones hanging from trees that have little baskets. I just sold a set. It was an adorable little dog that had two hanging baskets on the left and the right that you could remove, and those were the salt and pepper shakers. And the baskets were filled with flowers. Lots of kissing and hugging shakers. I have two little bears that when you put them together, their arms wrap around each other. Lots of Christmas ones. And some of the most sought after are from Lefton, Napco, Holt Howard. Bex Scott: [00:08:18] So a lot of this information that I found from my friend Worthpoint, and in this article that I was reading they went through the most collectible shakers from Lefton, Napco and Holt Howard, which I thought was super interesting because as a collector, I'm always wondering which ones I should be on the lookout for. So if you want to start the hunt, Lefton's most collectible are Bluebirds, Christmas angels, Miss Dainty, which is the girl with the red and white hat, Mr.Tootles the Maltese dog, Miss Priss the Blue Kitten, Thumbelina, The Green Fairy, Kissing Santa and Mrs. Claus, Christmas birds which are green, the Puppy Pal dogs wearing blue hats, and pink poodle chef, which in brackets they say is beyond expensive. I've actually never seen the pink poodle chef. Bex Scott: [00:09:21] Napco, you have number one, Miss Cutie Pie, two anthropomorphic fruit people, so that would be the artists, musicians, kissing Valentine birds, the bowler and hard hats, devils, flower girls, and long neck animals. And then Holt Howard, you have the Nodder Rock and Roll on springs, merry mice,they are pink and mischievous, Holly Poinsettia girls, winking Santa, Daisydorables, rooster, and pixieware are the most desirable of all the Holt Howard shakers I've seen. Not in person, but on a lot of my favorite collectors Instagrams and some on Facebook Marketplace. The pixieware salt and pepper shakers. They are so cute! Next up we have Enesco. Number one is the Sweet Shop. It says very pricey and rare. Anything anthropomorphic, fruits, vegetables, forks and spoons. I have had some forks and spoons. They're very cute. You can't really hold a lot of salt and pepper in them though, so definitely more for display. Golden Girls, Country Kids, Snappy the Snails, Missy Mouse, Doctor WO Owl, and Jonah and the whale. Bex Scott: [00:10:37] So going into more of the research, I discovered as well that people have local chapters of salt and Pepper shaker clubs. I didn't know that, but it makes sense. There are clubs for Pyrex collectors, Facebook groups and pages, many of which I'm a part of. So it would make sense that these salt and pepper shaker lovers would come together and sell and swap stories about their salt and pepper shakers. So after digging into some of this research about salt and pepper shakers and finding out that there was a salt and pepper shaker museum, I looked into this article by the Smithsonian magazine by Derek Workman, and it goes over this family's 80,000 shakers worth of salt and pepper shakers. So they have 40,000 pairs of shakers. They are called the Ludden family. And they have enough shakers to fill two museums. So it's Andrea, her son Alex, and her daughter, and they are in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with all of their salt and pepper shakers. So andrea said she started completely by chance when she bought a pepper mill at a garage sale in the mid 1980s. I'm sure that most of the collectors out there listening can totally relate to this. You find one item at a garage sale and it takes you down a spiral of collecting. I know that that's how things usually start for me with my addictive collecting personality. That's how my Pyrex started with finding it in my grandparents garage. So Andrea says that she had this pepper mill. It didn't work, so she bought a couple more, and she used to stand them on the window ledge of her kitchen, and her neighbors thought she was building a collection. Bex Scott: [00:12:32] She said nothing could have been further from her mind, but her neighbors started to bring new ones over, and eventually she had 14,000 on shelves all over her house, even in her bedrooms. And her husband Rolf told her that she needed somewhere else to put these or they're going to get divorced. So that's when they decided to create this museum. So you can wander around the museum. It says there's fat chefs, ruby red tomatoes, guardsmen in bearskins, Santas, feet sticking from a chimney, pistols and potatoes, a copy of the salt and pepper shaker cufflinks worn by Lady Diana. That is very cool. And Andrea, she was or is an archeologist by training, and when she moved to the States, she couldn't find work in her field. So she turned her attention to social anthropology, and she studied everyday life since the early years through her growing collection of salt and pepper shakers. And she says here in the article, "there's almost nothing you can imagine that hasn't been copied as a salt and pepper shaker. And many of them reflect the designs, the colors and the preoccupations of the period", which is very true. And when you think about it, when you look at a salt and pepper shaker you don't really think that deeply about it, but a lot of these designs were reflections of what was going on in the time. Bex Scott: [00:13:58] So they go into how, in the article, it was because people could travel more freely, either for work or on vacation, that the souvenir industry came about. And salt and pepper shakers were cheap, easy to carry, and colorful, and they made ideal gifts. So among the earliest producers of salt and pepper shakers were the German fine pottery maker Goebel. They introduced its first three sets in 1925, and today its Hummel shakers, introduced in 1935, are highly collectible. And ironically, it was the Great Depression of the 1930s that gave a major boost to the popularity of salt and pepper shakers as a household item and a collectible item, and ceramic producers worldwide were forced to restrict production and concentrate on lower priced items, and this helped because salt and pepper shakers were small, easy to produce, bright and cheery, and really could be bought for a few cents at most local hardware stores. Soon other ceramic companies got into the act, and Japanese firms had a large share of the market from the late 1920s through the 1930s. As well, from the late 1940s through the 50s, and production halted during World War Two. So the shakers they produced in postwar years labeled 'made in occupied Japan' or simply 'occupied Japan' are extremely rare and highly sought after. In the 1950s and 60s, they began producing shakers made from plastic. Plastic was very fragile, so fewer of these examples exist, making them extremely valuable. Which is another good thing to know because I have seen a lot of the plastic shakers around. Bex Scott: [00:15:49] Sometimes they're not in the greatest shape, but knowing this, that they are more rare and collectible, definitely makes that a bit exciting for me to try and find the plastic ones over some of the other ceramic ones that you can find. So they go into how, at first glance, the museum seems bright and happy, if a bit haphazard. The displays are well thought out and organized, especially considered the many models on display. I can't even begin to imagine how hard it would be to categorize and organize that many salt and pepper shakers. And because you can work by style, age, subject matter, color, Andrea says they try to do it in a way that combines all of the elements at the same time. There are hundreds of themes, and in those themes there will be many colors. But her mom has a way of laying out displays that are highly planned so that the colors within a theme are displayed together. For example, she continues, all the greens, yellows and reds of the vegetables are arranged in vertical rows. You get bright color bands, but all the shakers are on the same theme. It's a lot more complicated than it sounds because there are so many. A large number of the shaker sets are humorous. There's an aspirin salt shaker, a martini glass pepper shaker, and when they're all set up, there's sometimes an opportunity to create a visual joke. Andrea says that you see what looks like models of the southwest US Adobe houses of the style found in New Mexico with cactus and cowboys and Indians but behind them are two UFOs that have crashed and two aliens that glow in the dark. Bex Scott: [00:17:33] It's amazing how many of these shakers tell a tale that isn't obvious to everyone. One of her favorites is a chef holding a cat in one hand and a cleaver in the other. I always thought it was just a fun item, says Andrea, but her mom explained that it was very significant to older people who had been through the Depression and major wars. Food was short, but you still had to eat, so if a cat strayed by, it went into the pot and came out as chicken surprise! Oh my. As they continue the tour, they're absorbed by all the weird and wonderful shakers. Coca Cola cans, Dolly Parton's photo on a souvenir from Dollywood, the Smokies most fun place, Mickey and Minnie in chef tucks and aprons, the Beatles with the cropped hair and collarless jacket of the early days, a turquoise TV with Lucie Arnaz and her neighbor Ethel Mertz on the screen, and a sofa with an I Love Lucy heart shaped cushion, alligators with sunshades from Florida, bullfighters and bulls from Spain, kangaroos from Australia, a bobby and double decker bus from London, before and after versions of Mount Saint Helens made from the actual volcanic ash. Very cool. And if you are buying them to resell them, it is really important to look for damage on them. They, I've found, are one of the easiest things to chip and to break, even the smallest little bump. They chip quite easily, especially if you have, like the little Lefton bird shakers, looking on the ears of animals and the beaks. And just anywhere where there's a corner that they may have been hit against something, just keep an eye out. Artist and academic Sequoia Danielle Barnes redresses the ugly side of kitsch and ‘cute' toy cultures, telling histories of trickster rabbits from Peter Rabbit to Bugs Bunny, appropriated from Black Southern American folklore from the 16th century to now. With ceramics, fabrics, and super sticky slugs, Sequoia Danielle Barnes' new installation is an Afro-surrealist retelling of Br'er Rabbit and the Tar Baby, a folktale developed by her enslaved ancestors after being ripped from Africa and displaced in Alabama, in the United States - the place she grew up before pursuing her practice in ‘transatlantic' institutions. Here, stories about figures like Uncle Remus, Uncle Ben, and Aunt Jemima, often first told as a means of action guidance for outsmarting slavemasters, were mainstreamed into 20th century pop art and cultures. Sequoia's exhibition takes its title from the 1946 film, Song of the South, a nostalgic representation of the antebellum, pre-Confederate South, revealing how ‘cuteness' masks anti-Black racist tropes and propaganda. We discuss how popular consumption of Western/European films, TV adverts, and commercials can perpetuate forms of oppression and marginalisation, including racialisation, infantilism, violence, and the cannibalisation of enslaved peoples. Sequoia tells of her interest in ‘Tellytubby lore', how children's cartoons and animations can sustain critical traditions of surrealism, and why younger people more readily engage with her work than adults. From her creepy and uncanny collectibles, we discuss why major institutions protect and preserve golliwogs, golly, and ‘piccaninny' dolls, and Sequoia's ‘Black radical art practice' in spaces like CCA Glasgow, Fruitmarket, and the National Museum of Scotland. Sequoia shares her subversive influences from the Black diaspora, including Faith Ringgold, Betye Saars, Robert Colescott,and Eddie Chambers. With Theaster Gates, Patrick Kelly, Joe Casely-Hayford,, we explore Afrofuturism, and find entanglements in their own practice, between works with textiles, fashion, and pottery. Beneath the dark humour and sweet surfaces of their works, Sequoia speaks of connections between contemporary consumption and capitalism, and historic sugar cane plantations. exposing how legacies of colonialism, slavery, and global trade still shape society today. This phrase was introduced to me by my Persian wife, who herself displays a great deal of "Vojdaan" in her life. She and I were discussing potential names for a podcast that would identify with me and my values, and we both said at the same time, "conscientious." She then told me about this beautiful Persian word, and it stuck. She and I used this name for a joint podcast we did more or less for fun, but it's very much apropos for our day and age, so I've repurposed it for this show.I don't know about you, but I'm alarmed by the lack of conviction and integrity in our culture. People are on "autopilot" morally and spiritually. Whatever the talking heads on the boob tube tell us to think, that's what we think.Sure, this has always been a problem since the dawn of time, but it just seems more pronounced in recent years.And no one notices.And those who do notice...they seem to either not care, or have given up trying to make a difference.This podcast is one man's response to this pandemic of moral laziness and apathy. Her book, recently published, is entitled White Burgers, Black Cash: Fast Food From Black Exclusion to Exploitation. The book has been received very positively by the field. And was recently named the best book in the field of urban affairs by the Urban Affairs Association.   Interview Summary I was so happy to see your book because people have talked about the issue of race off and on in the field, but to see this kind of scholarly treatment of it like you provided has been really a welcome addition. Let me start with a general question. Let's begin with the fast food situation today and then rewind to where it began. Are there patterns to where fast food restaurants are located and who fast food is marketed to? Absolutely. There's quite a bit of research, and you just alluded to the work that's been done in the field. There's a lot of research that shows fast food is most dense in African American communities. Not every study has the same finding, but overall that's what the accumulated evidence shows. On the one hand you have the fact that Black communities are disproportionately saturated with these outlets. Then there's also the case that apart from the physical locations of the restaurants, fast food is strongly racialized as Black in terms of how it's portrayed to the public. It [Fast Food] relies on images of Blackness and Black cultural productions such as Black music for its marketing. These sometimes these veer into racial caricature as well. One of the things I talked about in the book briefly is the TV commercial character Annie who Popeye's introduced in 2009. They basically created this Black woman that Adweek at the time was calling "feisty," but it's really just this stereotypical idea of the sassy Black woman and she's in the kitchen frying up the chicken for Popeye's. And actually, some of the language that was used in those commercials really evokes the copy on late 19th century and Aunt Jemima pancake mix packaging. It's a really strong departure from fast food's early days, the way that fast food is now relying on Blackness as part of its core marketing constructs. I'm assuming that it follows from what you've been saying that the African American community has disproportionately been targeted with the marketing of these foods. Is that true of children within that community? Research shows that in terms of fast food marketing at the point of purchase. There's more - display advertising for example at restaurants that are in Black communities. And then there's also been research to show, not in terms of the outlets themselves, but in terms of TV programming that there tends to be more commercials for fast food and other unhealthy foods during shows that are targeting Black youth. How much of the patterning of the fast food restaurants is due to income or due to the amount of fast food consumption in these areas with many restaurants? Almost none of it really. It's not income and it's not the amount of fast food that people are consuming. In fact, one of the main studies that led me to start researching this book, because I was coming to it from public health where there was a lot of research around the disproportionality of fast food restaurants. We actually did a study in New York City, some colleagues and we published it in 2009, where we looked at how fast food was distributed across New York City's five boroughs. And restaurant density, we found, was due almost entirely to racial demographics. There's very little contribution from income. So, the percentage of Black residents was what was driving it. That was the biggest predictor of where fast food was located. It wasn't income, income made very little contribution and if you compared Black neighborhoods that were higher in income to those that were lower in income, they basically had about as much fast food exposure. Then if you compare them to white neighborhoods matched in income, Black neighborhoods still had more. So, it wasn't income, it was race. There are other areas that were high in fast food density like Midtown and downtown Manhattan where you have commercial and business districts, transportation hubs, tourist destinations. So, you expect fast food to be in these really dense and kind of busy commercial areas, but the only residential space that had comparable density were Black and brown neighborhoods. The assumption that many people have is that, okay, well if it's not income, then it's probably demand. So probably fast food is just dense in those neighborhoods because Black people eat so much fast food. But again, the data do not bear that out, not just in our study, but in others. And in fact, apart from the study we did specifically on fast food, we did another study where we looked at retail redlining for a number of different kinds of retail sectors. And again, demand is not what situates, you know, where stores are or are not. And then when I got to this project, just digging through the archives, you find that until the industry really went in on targeted advertising to increase the numbers of visits that Black people were making to fast food restaurants and the average check size that they were spending, Black consumers were mostly using fast food as a quick snack, it wasn't a primary place for meals. So it's really the case that the restaurants proceeded the demand and not the inverse. It is an absolutely fascinating picture. My guess is that what you've just said will probably come as a surprise to some people who are listening to this, not that fast food isn't dense in particular neighborhoods, but that it's particularly dense in neighborhoods by race just because people generally think that fast food is popular everywhere. So, let's talk about why this occurred and dive a little more deeply into what your book does and that's to provide a historical view on how and why this evolved. So, what did the early history look like and then what happened? So, the book traces what's basically a national story, but I focus particularly on certain cities like Chicago, New York and DC. But it's tracing how fast food changed racially and spatially from the early 1900's to the present. I break out that early history into what I call first and second-generation chains. So, they opened in urban and suburban areas respectively. The birth of the first generation fast food restaurants took place in what is termed the Nader of race relations in the US from the end of the Civil War to the 1930s. So, this is a time during which you see Plessy versus Ferguson, for example, ushering in legal segregation. Lynchings are at their worst. You have the destruction of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That's taking place and other notable incidents and forces that were undermining Black life at the time. It's during that context that the first generation restaurants are born. And so, these are burger chains like White Castle, that was the first actually big burger chain. People often assume it's McDonald's, but it's actually White Castle in 1921. And then there are knockoffs of White Castle, like White Tower and Little Tavern, which was an East coast brand. And then there were also other restaurants that were not burger chains, but more like hot shops was more of a sit-down restaurant. And then you had Horn and Hardart, the outlets where they had auto mats. So, you know, this was kind of high tech at the time, but you would go in and the food was behind little glass compartments and you would put in your requisite number of nickels and then take out your little plate of food. These were all the restaurants that I'm calling first generation restaurants. So, you had quite a bit of diversity in terms of what they were serving, but they were all in urban centers. They were not franchised. They were corporate owned outlets and most importantly everything about them was white, whether figuratively in terms of who dined and worked there or literally in the architecture and the design and the name like White Castle. That veneer of whiteness was doing two things. On the one hand, trying to offer the promise of pristine sanitary conditions because this is a time when food production was rife with concerns. And then also it's trying to promise a kind of unsullied social whiteness in the dining experience. So, first generation then leads to second generation fast food, which begins in the suburbs instead of the urban centers. Second generation fast food starts to grow in the early 1950s. These are the brand names that are most synonymous with fast food today: KFC, Burger King, McDonald's. So, for example, Ray Crock launches McDonald's as a franchise in the all white suburb of Des Plaines outside Chicago near O'Hare airport. And he set to fly over prospective sites looking for church steeples and schools, which to him were an indication of a middle class and stable community, but of course, racializing that as white. Because you could have Black neighborhoods with church steeples, but that was not where the restaurants were going. So, what ends up happening with second generation fast food is that it takes this theme of purity and shifts so that it's not just the purity of simple kind of fuel for the working man, but instead the purity of white domestic space. And where first-generation restaurants targeted working adults, the second went after families and children. Fast food then becomes more than just food - it's about fun. Those are the two key ways to think about the early history. One could obviously find many, many, many examples of different racial groups being excluded from the economic mainstream of the country. For example, areas of employment, and my guess is that being excluded from the marketing applied to consumer goods and lots of other things. But do you think there's something special about food in this context? Oh, that's a good question. It's interesting because fast food. It's food, but it's more than that the way that fast food initially excluded Black people. One of the things I talk about in the early part of the book is James Baldwin going to a restaurant and trying to order a burger and being rejected and facing discrimination. And the idea that it's not just that you can't get a burger, it's not the same thing as if you try to buy, I don't know, a ham sandwich or something. But like what burger means something more than that, right? It's bigger than a burger is Ella Baker said. Fast food is kind of like the closest thing we have to a national meal. It sort of occupies a special place in the heart of America and is symbolic of this quintessential all-American meal. And the notions of a good and simple life that we purportedly have in this country. So, it means more I think the way that fast food was positioned as something that was totally wrapped up in this exclusionary whiteness. Your book traces the long pathway that fast food traveled going from exclusion in the beginning and then later exploitation. Can you describe a couple of the key turning points? Well I would say that it wasn't like a light sort of got switched on that caused fast food to shift abruptly from utterly excluding Black people to then pursuing them full throttle the next day. It was quite a long and bumpy pathway and really American retailers in general have continually had to discover Black consumers and the fact that they exist over and over. And then sort of trying to think like, oh, how do we reach them? We don't understand them, like they're this enigma kind of thing. Fast food was doing the same kind of thing. There was both what the industry was doing and then there were also pull factors that were causing fast food to be drawn into Black communities as well. There are a lot of turning points, but I would say if you start fairly early in the history, a key one was after second generation fast food got going. Where suburban fast food right, is trying to position itself as this white utopia. But almost immediately that notion was fraught and unstable because concerns quickly arose around teenagers. They were money makers but they were also rowdy. Their behavior, hot rodding and goofing off in the parking lot and so on, was off-putting to the adult diners. So, it became this difficult kind of needle to thread of like how are we going to track this consumer segment that's foundational to the enterprise but do so under conditions that would keep them in line and not mess up the other potential revenue that we have going. As the kind of nuisance of fast foods became more pitched, municipalities began introducing ordinances to control fast food or even ban it. And that made the suburbs harder to get into or to maintain a foothold in. Corporations then start looking more at the cities that they were avoiding in the first place and the Black communities there that they had excluded. So that happens fairly early and then some other key turning points occur throughout the 1960s. Here we have urban renewal, you have urban rebellions taking place and during the late 1960s when these rebellions and uprisings were taking place, this is the time period when you get the first Black franchisees. Into the 1970s you have oil crises, then you have the burger and chicken wars as the industry called them in the 1980s. And this was referring to corporations battling each other for market share. So, all throughout the history there were different turning points that either accelerated the proliferation of fast food or sort of change the way the industry was looking at Black consumers and so on. Now in some discussions I've heard of this issue off and on over the years from people who have looked at the issue of targeted marketing who have talked about how there was a period of time and you made this clear, when Blacks were excluded from the marketing and they just weren't part of the overall picture of these restaurants. Then there was a movement for Blacks to be included more in the mainstream of American culture so that it was almost seen as an advance when they became included in the marketing. Black individuals were shown in the marketing and part of the iconic part of these restaurants. So that was seen as somewhat of a victory. What do you think of that? It's true and not true. I mean when fast food decided to finally start actually representing Black people in its marketing, I think that is important. I do think that the fact that they were finally making ads and conceiving of campaigns that saw Black people as part of the actual consumer base at which they were, yes, that that is important. But it's also the case that corporations are never doing anything for altruism. It's because they wanted to shore up their bottom line. So, for example, Burrell Advertising is the biggest African American ad shop based in Chicago. They get the McDonald's account and so they're the first ones to have a fast food restaurant account. They begin their campaign in 1971 and at that time, their advertising actually positioned Black families as regular people doing everything everybody else does and going to the restaurant and enjoying time together as a family and so on. And I think those kinds of images were important that they were creating them, but again, at the same time it was only the context in which Burrell got that account. The reasons why McDonald's was reaching out to Black consumers was because, again, in the early 1970s white suburbs were becoming more saturated, and McDonald's needing to expand. Then you have the oil crisis in which people are not driving as much, and Black people because of racism are centered in urban centers and not in the suburbs. So that makes a logical place for them to go and so on. So, it's not without its vexed context that those new advertising images and opportunities were taking place. Okay, thanks. I know that's a complicated topic, so I appreciate you addressing that. You know, something you mentioned just a few moments ago was that when Blacks started to become owners of franchises, can you expand on that a little bit and say what was the significance? Yes. First of all, cities were changing at that time. White residents were moving to the suburbs, multiple public and private policies were keeping the suburbs white and white residents were moving to white suburbs. So, Central City was changing, right? The neighborhoods that had been white before were now changing to become predominantly Black. And so, the fast food outlets that were located in those neighborhoods found their client base changing around them. And many of those operators, and indeed their corporate superiors, were uninterested in and uninformed about a Black consumer base at best and outwardly hostile at worst. You end up with as neighborhood racial transitions are taking place, white operators are now in communities they never meant to serve. Som as urban uprisings rack one city after another, Black franchisees are brought on kind of as a public face in these changing urban areas. The primary goal was to really have Black franchisees manage the racial risks that corporate was finding untenable. They realized that it wouldn't do to have white managers or franchise owners in these neighborhoods. So, they bring in Black franchisees to start making that transition. And then after fast food becomes more interested in trying to deliberately capture more Black spending, Black franchisees become even more important in that regard. For their part, the Black franchisees were seeking out fast food outlets as a financial instrument, right? This was a way to contest and break down unfair and pervasive exclusion from the country's resources. So, it was never about how much fast food we can possibly eat, right? Again, with the demand issue. So, Black franchisees are basically trying to get their part of the pie and then the federal government is heavily involved at this point because they start creating these different minority enterprise initiatives to grow Black small business. And so, it wasn't only the Black franchisees, but also Black franchisors who were starting their own chains. So, for example, former NFL Player Brady Keys started All Pro Chicken, as just one example. So, this idea of expanding fast food franchising to Black entrepreneurs who had been shut out on its face, seems like a laudable initiative. But again, it's like this is not just altruism and also the way that franchises were positioned in this kind of like you can get into business and do so in a way that's low risk because you know you don't have to start from scratch. You're buying into a thriving concern with name recognition and corporate support and all that. And all of that sounds good except you realize that in fact the franchisees are the ones who have to bear all the risk, not corporate. That's what the government was doing in terms of trying to put in all this money into franchising is really. It's like that's the response to the real life and death failures, for example, around policing, which was always at the heart of these uprisings. You have these real life and death concerns and then the government's responding with giving people access to fried chicken and burger outlets, which nobody was asking for really. Not only was the method problematic, but the execution as well. Just because Black people had more access to the franchises doesn't mean that the rest of the racism that was present, suddenly disappeared, right? The theoretical safety of a franchise didn't bear out in practice. Because of course they still couldn't get access to credit from lending institutions to launch their restaurants because they still didn't get support they needed from corporate, which in fact there are still lawsuits to this day by Black franchisees because the communities in which they're operating were still contending with deep inequality. All of that meant that that whole project was not likely to work very well. And you know, it's no surprise that it didn't. You mentioned chicken several times. In fact, there's a chapter in your book entitled Criminal Chickens. Can you tell us more? Yes, Criminal chicken is towards the end of the book. So, the book is organized in three parts. Part one is white utopias, part two is racial turnover, and part three is Black catastrophe. In each of those you see how Blackness is problematic, but in different ways. So Criminal Chicken is really dealing with the fact that by the 1990s, fast food had become pervasive in Black space and was thoroughly racialized as Black. And so, since fast food has saturated these neighborhoods, of course Black residents began to consume it more. With that, a program reigns down from the dominant society over Black people's alleged failure to control themselves and an assumed deviant predilection for unhealthy dietary behaviors, whether fast food, but also the same kind of discourse circulated around soul food. And the tenor of the discourse really raises W.E.B. DuBois's age-old question, which is how does it feel to be a problem? That was really the tenor of the conversation around fast food at that time. The chapters about the ways in which Black people's consumption was frequently characterized as deviant and interrogating the paradoxes around the symbolic meanings of fast food. Because like what we talked about earlier, Black people are basically being criticized for eating something that's supposedly at the heart of Americana. It's a kind of a no-win situation. On the one hand, certainly overseas, fast food continues to enjoy this kind of iconic status of America and American Burger and so on. Even within the country's borders it still retains some of that allure as something emblematic of American culture. But it's also now more fraught because, you know, we're in a moment where local and organic foods and so on are held in high esteem and fast food is the antithesis of that and it's industrial and mass produced and homogenized and has all these nutritional liabilities. So, basically, it's looking at the changing ideas around fast food and race and how that intersected with Black consumption. That's so interesting. I'd like to wrap up with a question, but I'd like to lead into that by reading two quotes from your book that I think are especially interesting. Here's the first. It is painfully logical that Black communities would first be excluded from a neighborhood resource when it was desirable and then become a repository once it was shunned. And then the second quote is this. The story of fast foods relationship to Black folks is a story about America itself. So, here's the question, are there ways that you can think of that fast food and food systems could be reconceptualized to help address issues of justice and equity? I would say that addressing justice inequity in food systems of which fast food is a part, is really about dealing with the other systems that govern our daily lives. Meaning, it's not an issue of trying to fix fast food, right? So, that is a discreet industry it behaves more equitably with communities because what it has done over the history that I trace in the book is it's not so unique in its practices and it also can't have taken the trajectory it did without intersecting with other institutional concerns. So, for example, housing is instructive because you know, of course you can't exploitatively target Black consumers unless residential segregation exists to concentrate them in space. And to do that, obviously you need a lot of different institutional policies and practices at play to produce that. And in a similar way, housing went from exclusion in the form of rank discrimination, resource hoarding, redlining, the denial of mortgages, all of that, to exploitation in the form of subprime lending. And Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor talks about predatory inclusion and I type that in the book because I think it's also a useful way to think about fast food as well. So, if you're thinking about equity in food systems, then you have to think about why is it that resources including food, but also beyond food, in this country are distributed the way that they are. And I think you can't get at the issues of justice that play out for fast food or injustice without addressing the key issues that reverberate through it. And so that's false scarcities that are created by capitalism, the racism that undergirds urban policies around land use, around segregation, deeply ingrained ideas in the American psyche about race and but also about other things. So, for me really, reconceptualizing fast food is really reconceptualizing how we live in America.   Bio   Naa Oyo A. Her research has centered primarily on the ways in which urban built environments reflect racial inequalities in the United States, and how racism directly and indirectly affects African American health. Kwate's research has been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and by fellowships from the Smithsonian Institution, among others. Prior to her first major book, White Burgers, Black Cash: Fast Food from Black Exclusion to Exploitation, she published the short work Burgers in Blackface: Anti-Black Restaurants Then and Now, which examines restaurants that deploy unapologetically racist logos, themes, and architecture; and edited The Street: A Photographic Field Guide to American Inequality, a visual taxonomy of inequality using Camden, NJ as a case study. Kwate has been a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the Newberry Library, and has received fellowships from the Smithsonian Institution, the European Institutes for Advanced Studies, and elsewhere. She is currently writing a book investigating the impact of corner liquor stores in Black communities from 1950 to date.

3[3:31] So his dad was very close to this guy, and so that's why he got that name.Um yeah he went on tomarry his high school sweetheart and began hiscomedy career at the age of 17 by performing stand-upon street corners in new york he had his datefirst debut as hustle manon the television show martin sohe's been working hard since he was akid um and it shows i meanhe lists his influences as carol burnett lucille balljackie gleason which i actually see the mostin a lot of what he does uh martin lawrenceeddie murphy and richard prior uh buthe learned about that is a great pedigree huh yeah that's athat's a really good good lineup but yeah the thingis he he says he learned his comedy first fromhis dad who taught him about jonesing whichis basically roasting people he put put himon his lap and they would roast people on the the streetand he also drew from his uncles who he said were also very funny so you knowit runs in the family um you can actually see his first stand-up gig which isan apollo theater amateur night on youtube so if you want to go out and seehis first big break it's there for you to find.Track 3[5:08] The line between Tracy Morgan and Tracy Jordan is remarkably thin. That's right.Yeah. So he has lobster for dinner every day.He does in fact own sharks. He has, at this point, 15, and he has a backyard tank.And now, to be fair, he has a very close relationship with his daughter,who wants to be a marine biologist.So at least partially he's doing this for her. Oh, it's a shark pony.Track 3[5:40] Yeah, it's a shark pony. Yeah, some people get pony ponies.She got a shark pony. um yeah toentertain his daughter uh and her friends he turnshis basement into a haunted house and he goes allout to the point he every halloweenhe actually won't go into the basement because he's afraid ofthe haunted house that he sets up in his own house umthat's spectacular now he whendrinking he does have a alter ego uh namedchico divine that he describes as thethe coolest dude who would never hurt anybody but chicodid at least piss piss one person off as princekicked chico out of his house uhfollowing a pre-grammy party he got a little out of control um now the thingis this actually helped turn tracy's life around because he got a dui whichled to a confrontation between himself and his son and from that point on he's been sober.Track 3[7:09] So it was a real uh great great thing for him to do to honor his dad that is great,what a tear-jerking end to trivia this week yeah a little bit more serious and and uh,intense uh trivia but it was one of those things where it's like you know iwas reading it i'm like should i you know leave this out because it's a littledown but it's like it really helps explain explain a lot of his comedy and thecharacter behind Tracy.I mean, I've met people who've done shows with him and they say he's like a really sweet dude.And this is where a lot of this comes from. Awesome.Well, our friend, Jeremy Dove is here and he is down with Thomas right now.So let's turn it over to those two.Track 4[13:14] Today, we're here on the SNL Hall of Fame. See, I got to get into SNL Hall of Fame mode.Yeah. Yeah, I was going to do this introduction like I was on Pop Culture 5,but we got to get into SNL Hall of Fame mode here.I know, it's a brain shift. It is a brain shift.So, today we're talking about Tracy Morgan here on the SNL Hall of Fame.Tracy joined the cast when he was 27. He auditioned at the same time as Stephen Colbert.Track 4[13:38] Stephen Colbert and Tracy Morgan auditioned, and Tracy auditioned with a littlekid character named Biscuit. Have you seen his audition?I have. I have seen it. Well, can you describe his audition and who Biscuit is?Because it was a really memorable audition to me. I'll be honest, right?Track 4[13:57] It's really weird. For the whole audition, there's certain people,like when you watch Phil Hartman's and Will Ferrell, and to me,it's just like, oh, that's a lock.Track 4[14:06] That guy has to be on. or even Jimmy Fallon forTracy's it was really like I'm likeman like it's not that it's not funny but it'sjust so it's just so different and unique andI'm just like I wonder what they talked aboutin the room once he like got done and saidthank you like you know what I mean because like you mentioned Biscuitand Biscuit was just this I'm probably gonnastruggle to describe but like just this odd character thathe kind of like had I feel like he did it from his stand-up days yeahit was like a little kid who was this kindof shy kid but not almost a socially awkward kidbut he would but then the premise was that he was asked torecite like a christmas poem or something yeah soit was like he was this shy kid but like hewas awkward but would kind of say these like weirdlike i don't know sassy kind of stuff at times like itwas was just really like it was differentit was just so weird for a character to biscuit littlekid named biscuit that's like definitely a tracy morgan touchon this and so like i mentioned he he and steven colbert were two of the finalistsand i've heard norm mcdonald even say like norm mcdonald was part of the selectionprocess and he watched the uh all the uh people audition and And he even said,he's like, I just assumed that Stephen was going to get it.Track 4[15:31] Yeah. We saw both of them. And even Norm said, I just thought,oh, Stephen Colbert is going to be a cast member. Right.Track 4[15:38] But I don't know. His audition, Tracy's audition won the show over, Jeremy.So one, I mean, what do you think?Track 4[15:50] It was about Tracy that might have won SNL over.And two, that's quite the what if between Stephen Colbert and Tracy. Yeah.Well, number one, I believe Tracy just has raw charisma.There's some people who they're just naturally funny.It's like the guys, like the class clown when you're in school or at the lunch table.Track 4[16:16] They just are funny. and they can almost like readthe phone book to you and they'll crack you upand Tracy has that you know a lot of times comedians they'rethey're you know it's an art form and it's trained it's timing andall those things but then there's just some who break throughwho it's just something about them they just make you all their mannerisms justmake you laugh and you can't pinpoint one specific thing you're like I likethis guy he just cracks me up and Thomas I don't know this is a hot take foryou or not but when i'm thinking about tracy morgan and getting ready for this episode.Track 4[16:52] I think this is lauren michaels most uniquehire and i also think whenit comes to judging how good of a talent evaluator lauren michaels is i go totracy morgan as number one yeah because of it's such a unique hire like thisshows me like lauren he thought outside the box when it comes to who who he's bringing on the cast.No, I don't think that's a hot take. I think I used a different word,but I think it encapsulates the same thing.We were probably both thinking along the same lines. I think it's one of Lorne's most inspired hires.That's a good word. It's a better word. No, it's a different word,but I think unique's a great word too for it. A unique hire, an inspired hire.I have to give Lorne and the other producers, I think Steve Higgins was probably,Obviously, Steve Higgins has been there forever.He's been there longer than Keenan. That's how long Steve Higgins has been there. Yes, yes.So I have to think whoever is in charge, Morrissey. Mm-hmm.Track 4[17:52] Choosing Tracy Morgan, they could have gone the easy route and chose StephenColbert and, you know, just plugged him in.But choosing Tracy was just like such a – it was a conscious,it was a deliberate choice to choose somebody like Tracy.Yeah, I'm wondering, like, if you look at the cast, like, do you think at thetime that they needed somebody like Tracy, like, to feel some sort of thing to add?Well, it's interesting because he came in 96, so he's not part of that 95 castwho saved the show again with Will Ferrell and Sherry O'Terry and everything.But he's still remembered as part of that group, even though he came a year later.He's still kind of grouped in with those guys as part of the group that kind of saved the show.So it's interesting because that's one season kind of removed from the toughesttime Lorne has really had on the show where like the network executives werekind of breathing down his neck and being like, you got to get the show funnier.And, you know, you kind of lost. And we've talked about this before.We kind of understand where they're coming from. That 94, 95 season was not really that good.So I think he was looking for people to kind of had an original voice.I think you hear Lawrence say that a lot when he's doing those interviews.I think he wanted people who were original and kind of got back to.Track 4[19:21] Snl really is and i think he wanted someone totracy's credit who people like towork with and was easy to work with too and ithink that's also a big thing that people don't talk about for tracyi'm glad you mentioned about the show's originalvibe and hearken back to that because there's an element of tracy that i thinkis part of the spirit of the original snl and that's almost that danger aspectyes yes like that unpredictability and that's that's a good thing and tracycould be unpredictable but in like a controlled way he's still a professional,he's still you know it's not like he sabotaged sketches ordid anything like that tracy was a professional but he had this aura vibe abouthim that was uh dangerous or unpredictable i think that did harken back to theoriginal time then that was something to me they probably wanted to shy awayfrom that in season 21 because they had just come off of sandler and farley and they were.Track 4[20:18] Dangerous quote-unquote and unpredictable but it got to bea disruption on the show i think right i thinkthey maybe consciously didn't hire somebody like that for the immediate seasonfollowing sandler and farley and those guys but maybe they re-evaluated andlike let's get somebody who can add that danger that unpredictability i meanis there something to Am I just being a weird SNL fan? No, no. I think there is.It was that tamed. Like you said, it's a controlled danger.It wasn't someone that, oh, he's off the rails and is not willing to work.And I think also he brought a confidence, too, where just from Tracy's background,his upbringing, you know, doing stand-up, I think, as well.Like there's a difference between being an improv actor and being a stand-upcomic. and I think Tracy just kind of did...Track 4[21:11] Not to say he's in this person's ballpark overall as far as SNL,but one thing about Eddie Murphy,when he was a part of that cast that replaced the original people from the firstfive years, a lot of those guys, and I understand, rightfully so,they're replacing the epic first five years. They were scared.They were nervous, all this pressure, the presses on them, and everyone alwayssaid Eddie just had a confidence where he didn't care.He's like, I know I'm good. I'm doing it. And I'm not saying Tracy's Eddie Murphy,but Tracy kind of always gives a confidence of, I know who I am.I don't care what you think. I'm here. I'm ready to go.And I think that's what Tracy kind of really brought. I feel like Lorne andthe others kind of saw in him.He wouldn't be scared of the moment. No, I definitely agree.And Tracy was confident in the material. He's like, I know this is funny.I know my inflection's funny. I just know what's funny about this.And so I'm going to get on screen and show you. So that, yeah,that's such a good point.And I think another element, especially around this time, 96,when Tracy got hired, that fascinates me.It's hard to think about Tracy getting cast around this time,to me, without thinking about SNL's history, somewhat tenuous history with black cast members.Track 4[22:26] So I'm wondering, Jeremy, like, can you talk about the show's history with blackcast members, like up until that point, and even like on?On yeah yeah it's always it's beensomething um i remember when ifirst saw tracy do stand-up comedy was after hehad left snl but people in the crowd wereyelling out like you know brian fellows and everything and hemade the joke that honestly my whole life i heard which is like black peopledon't watch snl except for when eddie murphy was on there right in my wholelife people my own family a lot of said i felt weird because me and my brotherliked it but they were like ohwe don't watch that except for when Eddie Murphy was on and it was always,you saw what happened in the original cast with Garrett Morris and how,you know, he really was neglected and just kind of stereotyped and.Track 4[23:15] Made to just either wear drag or just play this token black.And I think Eddie Murphy, he talked about his struggles and he had those battlestoo, but he was such a star and the show had no stars.So he kind of really emerged and became that guy.But then you see Damon Wayans came and he had struggles and just frustrationsof being that only black voice.Track 4[23:40] And you're seeing a room filled with white people who don't understand you.Not willing to really understand you becausethey're going to go to this performer who they either knowor feel like will get their work over better they're notsitting down trying to understand your comedic sensibility understandyour background and you know you saw that from damonit went to you know chris rock had the same battles and hereally struggled there where everyone here knows chrisrock and legendary stand-up comic but if hewasn't who he became came after SNL no one reallyremembers what Chris Rock did in that time and that'sa glorious time those early 90s of SNL soreally you look at from Eddie Murphy by thetime Tracy comes on there you know Tim Meadows was onbut he you know did his roles andstuff like that but didn't really like stripe it and I feel likenow he gets a little more appreciation forhis time on SNL but I feel like he was kind of like an underrated hecould do a lot of things but minus likeyou know the oj when the oj trial happenedi feel like that kind of helped him out and then the ladies man a little bitbut never really got that shining star treatment that i think tim meadows shouldhave gotten too so i think tracy is really an interesting um i guess like amarker for blacks being on the show where.Track 4[25:05] He still battled it too, and I know we'll talk about that, but he kind of reallyset the stage to me for Kenan, for Leslie Jones, Jay Pharoah.He was that guy to kind of really set the stage for seeing SNL starting to improveon that relationship with Black cast members.Oh, that's really great perspective and well put. And even though we're allSNL fans, love the show, I wouldn't be doing an SNL podcast if I didn't love the show.But there's also in the show's 49-year history stuff that they need to reckon with.You know, this is their treatment of women, their treatment of black cast members,maybe not enough representation.Yeah. Even like as a Latino myself, I always kind of look like about Latinorepresentation as well.I mean, that's just the reality of it and something that I know.You know, SNL, about when Leslie got hired, that's something that they madea conscious effort to get a black woman onto the show.And that was almost spearheaded by Kenan, telling them, you know what,look, you need to hire a black woman.Track 4[26:16] Plenty of qualified black women to do a lot of these roles. You need to get one on the gas.No. Oh, and I think it was shown in the conversations. Like,you look at it when In Living Color came out in the early 90s and just like,okay, then what are we saying here?Like, there's this show on Fox that's reaching this other demographic.And then people are kind of, like, I think kind of trying to say,like, oh, there's not that whole excuse of, well, there's no one to bring on.And it's like, that was a lie. You saw from the Weyans to all these different people.You know, it's funny that Damon Wayans, this great comedic talent,was on Saturday Night Live and was just misused and then becomes an all-timesketch performer on In Living Color, you know, four years later.Like, what's that say to you? Exactly. He was so frustrated on SNL that he sabotaged a sketch. Yeah.The Monopoly Man sketch with John Lovitz. Like, Damon just sort of sabotaged it and he wanted out.Right. Right, and Chris Rock leaves SNL to go to In Living Color because he'slike, hey, that's where my voice will be heard.Now, he picked bad timing because it was the way in –.Track 4[27:26] They left One Living Color, so his timing was off. But the decision to me wascorrect, where it's like, yeah, who's going to get your voice heard and understood?It's like, not Saturday Night Live. And Chris Rock has said there were so manygreat comedic minds from JimDowney, Al Franken, Lorne, and great cast members, great friends of his.But still, he wasn't being represented and wasn't being heard there.Yeah, I think it's an important discussion. and that's whyI think Tracy's one of the many reasons why Tracy's such aninteresting figure to me as far as Tracy goes Jeremy likehow did you get introduced to him how are you like most familiar withTracy was it SNL you see you mentioned his stand-up yeah so he was someone Ibeing you know I know you are too big fan of stand-up comedy you I would seehim on different things and different tapes and stuff like that but honestlyit was Saturday Night Live where it It was like, I was like, oh, that dude.I saw him on like the Apollo doing stand-up and everything.Back when the, you know, Steve Harvey used to host the Apollo and it would air Saturday nights.And I remember seeing Tracy Morgan. And then when I saw him on Saturday NightLive, I was like, oh, that guy.Because like this mid-90s era is when I really started watching SNL live.Track 4[28:40] I would watch the reruns before, but like watching it live was kind of like around 93, 94.So I was really kind of getting into my SNLlike fandom you know the year before and then whenTracy arrived so it was kind of cool to see and ofcourse as a black man when you saw like that other oh they brought on a blackcast member male or female you kind of like oh okay let's see what how theydo and Tracy Tracy in his own way shined through yeah yeah that's awesome soSo we mentioned he started in 96 at SNL was on the show until 2003.What's a we'll dive into it. What's the character sketch that kind of firststicks out to you during Tracy's time?Track 4[29:25] It's one that I kind of, I'll be honest, I didn't really like at first,and a lot of people, like, disagreed with me, like friends, but Brian Fellows is funny.Like, I will give Brian Fellows, and I kind of thought it was,like, overdone and stuff like that, but as I look back on it,and I'm like, you know what, that is, it's classic Tracy.And just the way he does that and just him being this Safari,Brian Fellows, Safari planet and this animal enthusiast, but doesn't have anyidea about any of the animals and always kind of got freaked out by him.And it is really, he's playing Brian Fellows, but in all honesty,it's just different forms of Tracy in all these sketches.That's really funny to me. Our first guest is like a human cactus.Please welcome our porcupine.Track 4[30:26] No, I'm from the Wildlife Sanctuary in Austin. My name is Dale Dudley. I'm Brian Fellow.Hello, Brian. I want you to meet my porcupine friend. His name is Willie.That rat needs a haircut.So that one and then the classic Christmas band member. I thought, yeah, I loved that.I loved it when it happened. I remember watching it live and loving it.And I still love it to this day when they kind of all got back together likea few years ago to do it. I always loved that.And I love Tracy in it. And just his facial expression always cracked me up.Those are just a couple of the memorable sketches or in moments with Tracy thatI have. I'm glad you brought up Brian Fellow's safari plan at first,and not just because I think this was the most times that he did a character.I think he did it nine times on SNL, so I think that was his most recurring character.But it just, to me, the story behind this just totally encapsulates Tracy's time at SNL and why...Track 4[31:29] He's successful, I think, in a major way.So Norm MacDonald, again, Norm, said that this came about because he and RobertSmigel wrote the Brian Fellows sketch as kind of a rib on Tracy because of theway Tracy would pronounce his S's.Like they wanted to mess with Tracy at the table read and give him somethinghard to read because of how he pronounced stuff.And as far as iknow they did like tracy like norman smigel idon't know like as far as i know yeah yeah smigel sayinganything bad about tracy so i guess itwas all in good fun but i love this becausetracy took something that was supposed to be a jokeon him and turned it into something that was his own andsuper memorable like he's he he basically waslike yeah screw this like in his own little way likethis is supposed to be a rib on me but the joke's onyou because i'm going to make this like a really successful sketch and a characterso that's a big reason why like to me that almost encapsulates big reason whytracy's just successful just in general right he just keeps on yeah and andyou hit on a couple things here which is like,you know rip norm and you know smigel is a great great all-time writer but justlike Like, how messed up that is.Track 4[32:53] And, like, that's a small example of that cultural difference where,like, that wouldn't happen to him on In Living Color.You know what I mean? Or, like, whatever that day's Key and Peele or Chappelleshow, that wouldn't have happened to him.Right. He would have had writers in there who understood, who knew him,like, know his background.They can relate to him. They kind of, like, did it as a spoof.And to your point, Tracy took it. And I think that's what makes Tracy greatis there's just a confidence about him and a no fear kind of mentality.Like because he has that background and I think like, hey, I was out here,you know, selling different items in front of Yankee Stadium a few years ago,you know, just trying to make, you know, $30.So I'm on NBC on Saturday Night Live. What do I have to lose?So he has that kind of fear that was like, all right, you want to like mock it?Fine, let's go. Oh, and he takes it and makes it his most memorable character. Yeah, absolutely.Track 4[33:53] And the sketch itself, his delivery is so great.I think the just genius part about it is Tracy does these characters and hehas this delivery to where it seems like it's an accident.It seems like he's not putting a lot into it, but it's by design.A lot of his inflection, his timing, him being amped up Tracy Morgan,it's by design because he knows that that's going to get the laughs.He knows how to pull laughs from people. Like Brian Fellowes.Track 4[34:26] Just how he pauses or how somebody will say their name on the show and thenhow he'll pause and say, he'll say, well, I'm Brian Fellow.Track 4[34:35] Tracy knows that that pause and then his kind of shoulder shake,the delivery is going to pull the laugh.So it seems like he makes it look so easy and natural, but it's just by designbecause Tracy has that comedic mind.I always was entertained by the Brian Fellow Safari planet because of that.No, and to me, like you said, it was by design. It's just that inflection.But what he did, which I feel like Chris Rock didn't do, and I think a lot ofthe people who were stand-ups on the show before him didn't do,is when you're not an improv person who knows how to do that,like working with others and different characters and acting,a lot of times they say if you're on SNL as a stand-up, it's best to be on aweekend update or have a solo thing where you're on a show.You're looking in camera and kind of doing your own thing, almost like you'redoing standup and Chris rock didn't really figure that out. Right.But I think Tracy, when you have like, you know, he would have a guest on, but from Brian fellows,astronaut Jones, different things, he kind of found his lane and kind of pokedand reconstructed like improv and sketch by doing this, these individual charactersthat really highlighted his sensibility.Yeah. And with astronaut Jones again, like he made it look like,Oh, oh, that's just Tracy playing himself.Track 4[35:57] But he just knew his delivery. Maybe there's danger.He knew how to tap into just how to say something.That one in particular, Ashton Jones, is almost like anti-comedy in a way.There's a big old theme song.Track 4[36:38] The sketch itself is anticlimactic. Oh, yeah.But that's like a lot of anti-comedy. And then Tracy just has to do like just a few little things.I'm just, the Britney Spears astronaut Jones is the one that I always went back to.My name is Craig Ellera. I'm the queen of Orpheoleans. A proud and peace-lovingrace. My people have been awaiting your arrival for some time now.We're in desperate need of your help. The Galaxians have besieged our citiesand plundered our riches. What?Say what? Right. Dig. Uh-huh. Right.Well, why don't you drop out of that green jumpsuit and show me that fat ass?Track 4[37:25] It's like a one-joke thing, but it's like anti-comedy in a way, but that's just like,you brought up such a good point, Jeremy, me earlier abouttracy's just a different funny personhe's like that got the your friend at the lunch table yourfriend who just makes you you should read the phone book and crackyou up and things like astronaut jones arelike a perfect example to me no for sure actuallyand you you nailed it on what makes that you know that because i rememberthat britney spears and it was almost what was funnywas just a dichotomy of having britney and tracy togetherand it's like the odd couple effect waslike that cracked you up just being like britney spearsand tracy morgan like having even though like it's scripted andstuff but like having a conversation it just was odd but like itwas that alone made you laugh but i remember um i think it was season 25 andjamie fox was the host and it was a time where uh it was like you know in betweenwe're like you know jamie's walking and tracy's like oh what's up jamie what'sup man he goes i'm glad we got some some brothers on the show,and Jamie's like, oh, yeah, yeah.Because Tracy's like, yo, these writers don't understand me.They don't get me or that dude with the white hair.And Jamie's like, you mean Lorne Michaels?Track 4[38:38] He's like, I don't know, whatever. He's like, he's your boss.He's like, yeah, he's just always saying weird stuff and doing weird things.And he's like, I'm going to be on the show a lot this week with you here,and we're going to take over. Revolution will be televised.And Jamie's like, yeah, you know, he kind of looks all quiet,like he's sneaking something.He's like, you're right, man, we're going to take over. I got mad lines,man, and this week I'm blowing up the spot.That's what I'm saying. All right, come on, let's go. We're in the middle ofa show. Okay? Yeah, yeah, all right.Jamie? Give me a soda, bitch!Track 4[39:16] Okay all right but it was one ofmy favorite tracy morgan moments because he just just thatline get me a soda like he just nailedit bitch yeah yeah bitch and lauren just goes okaylike i'm like that was great that was like that dangerousaspect of tracy i always love likehe's he's like one of the only ones that could pull that offconvincingly quite honestly we're inseason 49 and i think the current cast ismissing someone like that for sure if they tryto do a backstage and like i wouldn't andrews music is myfavorite cast member currently i don't think hecould pull that off convincingly james austin johnson idon't think keenan can it's not in keenan's nature necessarilyto like pull that off convincingly they don't havesomeone currently like tracy morgan thatadds that kind of unpredictability danger thisbackstage stage stuff with lauren that he did he because he did that a fewtimes the garth brooks one was another yes funny oneto me when he was talking to garth brooks and he was like manthat chris gaines i don't know like uh you're doinga great job garth but like what's up with that chris gaines guy and whateverand then lauren comes to talks to tracy and and he's like hey tracy you knowand then tracy's like no i know i know i know garth is chris gaines i know thatso it's almost like yeah yeah like a turnabout like he's just telling laurenlike i know that you like you got to give Give me some credit.Track 4[40:37] And then I don't know if it was this one or another one where all he has todo is look at Lauren and Lauren goes, orange soda, right? Yeah.Track 4[40:47] So credit to Lauren for playing along. But Tracy's the only one or one of thefew, I think, over the last 25 years or so that could pull something off likethat convincingly. And I think you're right.And it's not a knock on cast members past or present. you said Kenan's greatthat's just not who he is and the people who were on with Tracy that's not who they were like.Track 4[41:13] You can't find like you can't teach that what tracyhad like just like it just comes fromit's part natural part upbringing inyour experiences but like i i alwaysthink about something um jim brewertold a story uh i forget what radioshow he was on but he talks about you knowhim and tracy kind of were high around the same time and itwas the week that you know tragically like when farley cameand hosted and how he was just not in not ingood good shape and uh marcyhe said marcy went to because he was not doingwell during the week and not showing up and was not all thereso he was trying to hang out withlike different people in the cast and jim brewer's like me andtracy weren't doing that but then like marcy andpeople were looking at those to and kind of putit on them like oh you two must be getting chris into troubleand so they said marcy went intolike the office talked to jim and tracy and waslike you two need to stay away from chris so doall these things and like leave him alone and jim brewerwas like you know i'm new so i got nervous and scared andhe said credit to tracy he said tracy stood upand said i'm a grown man with children's you can't talk tome that way i got children's you ain't gonna talk tome like that and he was like but credit to him he's likehe's i didn't do nothing i'm a grown man with children's andi'm like yeah and jim brewer said andi'm like right like he was like no new or not you're not going to come in and.Track 4[42:43] Accuse me something i didn't do and disrespect me i'm gonna stick up for myself.Track 4[42:46] And jim brewer's like he got courage from seeing tracy to be like yeah we didn'tdo anything we didn't take chris out we're not the bad influences here don'tyell at us but that But Tracy was new,and him doing that to Marcy, who's a high-up person,that shows the kind of courage he came in with.Well, yeah, that's that thing where you were right.You alluded to, I mean, he was selling things outside of Yankee Stadium justa few years back, and now he's on SNL. He made it.Track 4[43:18] He's making that salary. That's why he said during a...When he was going to his audition, he was confident because he was like,I shouldn't even be here.The fact that I'm in this last audition, I got nothing to lose.I'm going to go in here and just show my stuff and just be confident.That's just how he carried himself. He's almost like, I shouldn't be here.I already won. The fact that I'm in this room, I already won,so I'm not going to compromise myself and stand down to Marcy Klein or something like when she comes in.Track 4[43:52] And tries to yell at us for something that we didn't do, especially.That just speaks a lot to how Tracy even got to the show. Right.No, for sure. For sure. It just kind of shows, especially by the time you getto the 90s and on, even before then, but that is the goal of so many improv actors.Whether you're at Second City or the Groundlings or whatever,is to make it to Saturday Night Live.That's the goal. So then, of course, no matter how talented you are,if you're on that level and trying to get to SNL, if you get there,you're going to be, especially early on, nervous.And I'm not knocking anyone, but scared because this was your dream.This is the big time SNL. I can make it here.I can maybe be a movie star or a TV star from here.So then you're trying to kiss up to the writers and the big time producers.Juicers i think it was an advantage for a guy like tracymorgan you know same like it was for eddie back in theearly 80s that wasn't his they were stand up likethat wasn't their goal and it was just like all right like we know what it'slike to be in front of this crowd on our own and having to make someone laughand when i come here like i'm not intimidated by this stage i made it the factthat i'm already here i made it here let's go what's the worst that could happen to me Yeah,that speaks to why we're even talking about him right now and why he...Track 4[45:18] Resonates as such a fan favorite because it'shis personality it's kind of the vibe that thatTracy gives off that that compel peopleto watch that draw people to him and it comes through in the sketches and hisand his work on SNL for sure like I have a bunch of example I don't know ifyou remember this one it's toward the end if it's like his second to last seasonand he and Rachel Dratch had a it was a one-off thing it was a talking to thestars with Rachel and Tracy and they were talking to Jon Stewart.All right, well, hosting an awards show of that caliber must be quite stressful.Y'all like to get high, right?Track 4[45:59] Uh, no, no, I don't. What? Get real, Dratch.I've been backstage at those awards shows, man. The Source Awards was like Weed City, bruh.Come on, tell me. Y'all like to get lifted, right? Uh, lifted.Lifted um i find if tracy says aword that i don't know it usually means hi oh okay andthis showed like that loose loose canon element oftracy and just like how tracy mightbe if you're just hanging out with him and the bit was like thatrachel dratch is taking the interview with john store.Track 4[46:32] Very seriously she has her cards and she'sasking him questions and tracy's just being tracy he'sjust goofing around he's ribbing dratch he's asking johnstore inappropriate questions ends and that's justlike the vibe like that that one uh thatsketch with with rachel dratch like that perfectly encapsulatesjust that whole vibe to me darren likelike there's a reason like i heard you kind of breakinto a tracy morgan voice like there's areason why people want to like imitate tracy soi'm gonna take you outside and get you pregnant like peoplejust want to get you you pregnant doodoo pampasyeah jay moore does a great there's a great oh yeahbut uh there's a reason why peoplejust want to imitate him and love him and want toimitate his mannerisms and the way he you know because hejust gives off that like vibe yeah there'ssomething that he has that is rare thatsometimes it's more valuable than if you're the most polished orthe best the best writer or the best you know setupguy and you you can see it with certain peopleand you know pop culture even like in politics there'scertain people who have they just have a likability that comes through the screenand people just you like no matter what they might even portray the worst charactersthat are you know they're delivering bad news but you know what people justreally like this person and i think tracy even in that sketch with rachel dratch.Track 4[48:00] You just like Tracy Morgan. I think a lot of us fans just always liked him andgravitated toward him, which is why then and now, for those years,for that era, you hear Will Ferrell, Sherry O'Terry,Molly Shannon, but you're going to hear Tracy Morgan being mentioned too.To me, not just because of what he's done post-SNL, just talking about thatera SNL, for as he wasn't someone who was always used, I think it's incrediblethat we still talk about that era in the show's history,and one of the first names we're going to talk about is Tracy Morgan.Track 4[48:35] Yeah, yeah, right. That's why this is probably a different feeling episode,even for the SNL Hall of Fame, which is fitting to me with Tracy Morgan.He was just a different feeling kind of cast member, just a different dude that we all love.You had mentioned his stand-up, and I've seen a little bit of it.How would you describe his stand-up comedy? buthe raw and all over the place i'veseen him twice and i'll be honest the first time wasat i was at temple university um andhe was about an hour and a half late and hecame out and he seemed unprepared hehad some funny lines just because tracy's funnybut he seemed unprepared and it was kind of like underwhelmingi'll be honest okay i went a couple years later andsaw him new york in New York at a comedy club and heseemed much he was still that like we talked aboutthat raw like danger feel but likehe was more prepared he was on time and he was a lot better as a stand-up comedyso he it's almost in a way what he brings to SNL he still brings to stand-upwhich is I would never say Tracy's like number one stand-up of all time butI would tell anyone like would Would you like,should I buy a ticket to see Tracy Morgan do state? I would say,yeah, because you're going to laugh.Track 4[49:56] You're going to have a good time because of all the things we're talking about.He's just charisma, that sense of danger. You don't know what he's going to say.He doesn't care. He's not afraid of being canceled or not afraid of like someonefrom the crowd may shout something.Track 4[50:10] He's not like worried about that. He's going to fire right back or go along with it.You're going to be entertained and you're going to end up liking him.If you don't know him or you're not sure, you're going to like Tracy.So it's that same kind of vibe.Same vibe. So there's a sense of danger when he does stand-up.But maybe it's a little more chaotic because he doesn't have Lauren or SteveHiggins or Marcy Klein or the censors on him.But similar vibes. Yeah, that's how I felt with some of the stand-up that I'veseen just on YouTube or going back and watching some of bits and pieces of hisspecials or whatever. Yeah.Uh just some quick hitters too from SNL like probably some stuff that a lotof people would remember Dominican Lou.I love to watch the movies the Sling Blade, the Eddie Maguire and the English Pages.It's a good movie a lot of people they enjoy this movie they love to see itthey love to see the Tom Cruise it's very good for them they like it.Track 4[51:18] What was your favorite part of the movie i don't knowi didn't see it i have notime i'm working all the time you know but ihear it's a good movie it's a good movie people in the building they're talkingabout it a lot they love the movie they like to see the movie all the time they'retalking about it oh hell yeah he did three times i love dominican lou becauseit was like Like, Dominican Lou was this, it was a perfect,like, it's a very specific archetype of a person.It's the person who wants to be part of the conversation, but they haven't really,like, lived it themselves.So, Dominican Lou's always like, yeah, like, this thing was good.I hear everybody talking about it. So, he's not really giving his opinion.He's saying that, like, I heard people in the building talk about it.So, it's like this person who really wants to be part of the conversation.They want to be clued in. but they don't have like the firsthand experiencethemselves so they only have a certain amount of,like i said firsthand experience to go off of so he's always like living vicariouslythrough others yeah and he's fine with it yeah you know what you just said somethingthat and maybe i don't know how people will react to this but.Track 4[52:31] When it comes to, like, you look at, like, the legacy of a Dan Aykroyd,one of the things people talk about is the everyday, everyman characters thathe brought to, you know, sketch comedy and Saturday Night Live.That, like, blue-collar guy that everyone knows, but you didn't really see on,you know, sketch and on TV yet, like, being portrayed that way.And I'm wondering, I feel like Tracy Morgan, even though he has some outrageouscharacters, some of his characters kind of—he kind of brought that, too, where—.Track 4[53:01] But not like his main one, not like Brian Fellows or anything,but like Dominican Lou and some other ones like that, where it's like, you know that guy.Yeah. You know that guy, and it was the kind of representation you weren't reallyseeing on Saturday Night Live before.I think you're absolutely right. I see a little bit of that,too, in his Woodrow character.Yes. Obviously, it's like a heightened kind of thing, but I mean,you've come across someone like that.Mm-hmm. And I can see that. And the commonality, too, is like there's some heartunderneath there, too, because somebody like Woodrow, even Brian Fellows,like I root for him. Yeah. He's likable.And we had brought up Britney Spears with the Astronaut Jones,but it was like Britney Spears and Woodrow had had she did a Woodrow sketchwith him and they went they were hanging out in the sewer and having a little conversation.And there's something about how tracy portrayed woodrowwho's this uh he's a homeless gentleman yeahan eccentric homeless gentleman who told britney spears that uh that he hasthe the post office box down there because the because that's where they werehaving keeping secrets on him so he stole it and put it down in the sewer sohe says kind of goofy stuff like that but But there's a lot of human quality.There's a lot of humanity in a character like that. I think it's easy for Tracyto bring that humanity, I think, too.Track 4[54:31] And I kind of wonder, because you mentioned... I know that episode,and I remember all the sketches.Those were two different episodes, by the way. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah,okay, they're two different ones. I'm wondering, do you think...Track 4[54:45] Britney Spears kind of requested to be with Tracy in some sketches, you think?Or something because it's like, Britney Spears, I mean, people still,I think, know how big she is.But at that point, she's like, you can make a case like the hottest star outthere is Britney Spears.It's not Will Ferrell in these weird ones. It's Tracy Morgan doing these things.So I'm just like, I wonder if Britney was a fan or it could have been the writersjust thinking that's an odd couple pairing.But it's interesting. now that's a good thought so she did thewoodrow one with him in season 25 at the end of season 25and she came back in season 27 that's where they did the astronaut jones andif you watch re-watch the astronaut jones sketch at the end when he says hislike famous when he says his famous line as astronaut jones oh why don't youdrop out of that green jumpsuit and show me that fat ass.Track 4[55:38] When he says that you could see britney laughand i don't know or she's like smiled and i don't know ifthat was supposed to happen like the character because ifshe was supposed to be this robotic alien but when tracysays that you see britney crack a smile at the end and then they go to the themeto the ending credits for the sketch i kind of do think that britney likes tracyand enjoyed and enjoyed working working with him that's like that's a good thoughtman that's It's something that's a good thing to pick up.Yeah, I was just like, because it's just not, for all the people who were onSNL at the time, it's like you could have put a lot of people with Britney Spears,but it's very memorable. So, yeah, I was just wondering, yeah.Yeah, no, I love that. One of my other favorite ones, one of my last favoriteones is Uncle Jemima's Pure Mash Liquor. Yes, yes.Classic. I love the concept of Aunt Jemima's husband having his own product.And he even says in the commercial, like, they asked me, like,why mash liquor? And he's like, well, sell what you know.And I know, like, so Tracy's whole delivery of this sketch was just so greatto hear me. Oh, it was classic.Track 4[56:46] Now she says that selling booze is degrading to our people.I always say that black folk ain't exactly swelling up with pride on accountof you flipping Framjack.Ain't I right, Sammy? Listen, don't get me in this mess. Then she say,but why booze? I said, sell what you know.And I know about booze.Uncle Jemima's Pure Man Snicker has a 95% alcohol content, and that's per volume.Track 4[57:15] What the hell does that mean? That means you get up for less money.And that might be my low-key favorite one.Track 4[57:26] Great like you said like just who wouldhave thought about that like to like you know everyone and jemimaand how controversial and jemima can be looked on and for him to kind of goin there and do like her husband and kind of doing that like you know i getno respect and i gotta sell something to here and don't forget about me feelit was just classic tracy morgan i'm like that's it's a genius character honestlyyeah it's great they only did it one time i would have led to see Uncle Jemima pop up,even more and he has those cartoon birds around him andhe's swatting at them and then at the end Tim Meadows calls itout he's like what are you swatting at he asked him that's hilarious I forgotyep that's so good yeah that's so good that's from season 25 Uncle Jemima'sPure Mash Liquor yeah that was awesome is there anything else like well I thinkthis was after his tenure but,you know everyone I know is excited for the,the big SNL 50th celebration and, you know, how epic the S the 40th was,but Tracy had had that accident that, you know, his friend tragically passed away.And a lot of people thought Tracy, you know, weren't sure if he was going to survive that accident.And Tracy was absent from SNL 40.And I know Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey gave, he had a special little segment wherethey gave shout out to him. And I thought how even in the moment then and even more like now I.Track 4[58:53] How big that was that a lot of times, you know, it's sad, but that those kindof things go to like the cast members or people who have passed away.And Tracy wasn't hadn't passed. He was, you know, just injured.Track 4[59:04] But like he had that kind of lore and Alec Baldwin, you know,did a great impression of him, too.And that part, you know, was dead on. Actually, I was really good by Alec Baldwin.But in that moment, it kind of hit me like, yeah, that was somebody who wasso missing from that celebration.Inspiration and I'm like yeah I wish Tracy Tracy wouldhave been so good in that sketch or in that thinglike oh but awesome but just also like theimpact that Tracy made that for at that

2:[1:19] There's a great, the great monologue by Billy Crystal in the beginning of that. He's like, your 20s are a blur. Your 30s, you make a little money, raise a wife, have a couple of kids, buy a house. Your 40s, you wake up one day and you think to yourself, what happened to my 30s? He goes on to every decade and then he's like, your 80s, you end up like, you eat breakfast at, or whatever, you eat dinner at five, lunch at 10, breakfast the night before. Track 1:[2:20] Like, dude, just call a happy hour. Fuck it. Yeah. So in 2004, we got the ninth studio record by The Hip, In Between Evolution. This is a, you know. Like Clockwork, every two years we've got a record from this band, you know, and they were still touring their brains out. I think it's a staggering feat, you know, that a band with their original lineup can put out a record every two years, you know, guided by voices or bands like that, notwithstanding, thosesongwriters are, you know, Bob Puller, it's just so prolific. It's, it's unreal. But in terms of band work, bands that tour extensively, I don't know of many other bands that have had this kind of halcyon run. But here we are, talking about it. And as we always do, I want to find out environmentally what you thought of the record, where you listened to it, where you first heard it and what your overall general thoughts are onthis 9th record produced by Adam Kasper. What do you think? Track 2:[3:45] I think the name is very fitting, In Between Evolution, because I feel like this record is a bit in between. And I say that, you know, when you're in elementary school, you see the monkey going, you know, to like Croag Magnon Man and then like getting up through the ages to get to the likemodern day man, modern day human. I feel like this record is maybe not any of those, but something like in between that we sort of haven't seen before, you know. It's certainly an evolved version of the hip, but I can't really attribute it to anything they've ever done before or anything I think they will do. It's very different in a lot of ways. Track 1:[4:38] Where do you listen to this one? Track 2:[4:41] I listen to it everywhere. I listen to it out and about. I listen to it in my office, working. Probably best place was in the car, you know. The car really, this record was, I feel like, made for driving, you know, like a lot of their records, you know. So I would say if I had to pick any environment, definitely my car, I mean, I don't know if it's everybody's car, I have a bit of a bias, given that, you know, I've got a pretty solid soundsystem in my car, like a premium. But yeah, I enjoyed it in the car. Track 3:[5:23] We need a soundbite that's like, that's like, premium sound system. Track 2:[5:31] We can drop that in post. Track 3:[5:32] Yeah. Well, I, you know, I'll disagree with Pete. I, to me, this felt more hip, right out the gates and you know I think Pete and I differed a little bit on the last album and I'm really liking our, you know, compare and contrast. I'll just quickly add Pete's haircuts throwing me off a little bit today, but I can deal. I can deal. But anyways, that looks good. [6:06] I thought In Violet Light, the last album, what we reviewed was a little bit of a departure and super polished and, you know, made for like, I don't know, an award stage or something.Maybe have the Oscars on the mind. but I thought in Between Evolution, I looked at the title wondering if that meant they were coming back to their own production type, style, soundrecording. You know, I didn't really understand the title for this one because it felt more like a hip album to me. [6:43] The producer, you know, I looked up to see who did this one. Adam Kasper, he did all kinds of bands in Seattle. Mudhoney, Nirvana, you know, the Foo Fighters, he worked with REM. I don't know if it was all in Seattle, but Soundgarden. He even did some work with Cat Power, who Amy and I adore. One of our favorite singer-songwriters. Just, you know, you worked with amazing musicians. And all these musicians I just listed, maybe except for kind of Aerosmith, I'm not exactly a fan of. But, you know, these are bands, maybe Aerosmith, who wear their hearts on their sleeve and really are just going for it. And almost achieving a status where they have a following and they have their shit down and they can kind of do what they want, you know? And I felt like this album went back to the band a little bit more doing what they want. So I was pretty excited, pretty excited by it. Track 1:[7:43] Can you describe that a little bit more? Like, what do you mean by what they want? Track 3:[7:49] Well, the last album I thought was overproduced. I thought it was... Track 1:[7:52] Right, right. Track 3:[7:53] I thought it was too scripted, you know, I thought it was too, like, ha, here we go back to food metaphors. It's like showing up at a restaurant with a preset menu. That's what I felt the last album was, and I felt like this one was a little bit more carefree. It was a little bit more back to experimental. The lyrics, the themes behind all the songs were, in certain ways, like what I've experienced from other albums past themes, with variation and variety. I don't know, this felt more hip to me. This just felt more like the first handful of albums that got me excited about where the band was going. So in that regard, it's like, yeah, fuck. Let's do this every two years. We're going on 10 years. Or this was the ninth album, right? So it's over 10 years. And that, that to me, as Pete knows, as someone who has recorded, that is such a... [8:58] Heroic work with Yeah with touring to as much as these guys toured I mean It's remarkable that they're all still digging each other so much, you know Yeah, but from also from acouple of things that I read during this tour Is when Gord at one point commented about, even if there's differences going on behind the scenes or Or there was some tour manager issues, Iguess, that once they got on stage and started playing, that they just were a band. They were like NSYNC and just super, super in the groove. Track 2:[9:41] Not like NSYNC. Track 3:[9:42] Yeah, they were very much NSYNC. Just super in the groove, which means they're like this fucking locomotive still. So I think it's still super impressive. Even with a band that I'm not as impressed with or fond of, it's still an impressive feat to go this far with recording, producing, touring, everything. Track 1:[10:05] Yeah. Track 2:[10:07] Yes. Track 3:[10:08] Hands down. Absolutely. Track 2:[10:09] Kudos. Track 1:[10:11] And in terms of environments for you? Track 3:[10:14] Yeah, so it was a lot of car. I listened to it pretty quick after our last review. There's a lot of car time and some home time. I don't play their music much at home over my home systems. So it's a lot of car, a lot of headphones. It's a little more intimate for me to do it that way and I also really enjoy when bands geek out on recording, and you can hear things with headphones on that you wouldn't normally reallybe in tune with if you're just walking around the house playing it through your ear. Track 2:[10:56] There's a few of those on this record. Track 3:[10:57] Yeah, there's a few of those on this record, and I love that stuff. I mean, that to me shows that a band is really caring about their listeners and their fans and their art. There's a few of that. Track 1:[11:14] Well let's dig in then. Heaven is a better place today. Track 3:[11:21] So, yeah, this one, you know, there's been a few albums where... My first listen to the first song. I've never done a random listen first try, you know, and that's the way so many people experience music these days. I hear a song from an artist. So I might have to try that as an experiment on some album. But you know, first listen to Heaven is a Better Place Today in the car. It was like, yes, here we go. Like, Pete, you mentioned a great road trip soundtrack or whatever. This is totally it. It felt like a good, fun, solid opener with a drive and the carry of the drums and the bass really throughout this album seemed a little more...I mean they're always solid butthis one just even seemed more gelled, which is kind of hard to even imagine these guys doing. I loved Gord's singing. He's kind of at an elevated pitch with this one and, you know, from what I understand, it's...well. [12:33] My first take was like, this feels like a memorial song, like this is a tribute to somebody and Of course later learned that it's in part about Dan Snyder. I mean, I'm not a hockey guy I mean even I couldn't even tell you who Atlanta's team is or was Atlanta thrashers. That's probably my favorite hockey team name though so, you know read a little bit about Danny Heatley, did I just say his name wrong? No, don't sorry Dan Snyder Snyder Um, he was killed when is with his teammate Danny Healy. Track 1:[13:08] That's right. Track 3:[13:09] They're the ones who were Wrecked some sports car, which is such a tragic story, you know to hear about somebody famous wrecking in a sports car. It's just It's kind of an awesome way to go. But anyways, you know, I thought it was good solid Opener really really easy ending. It was like, okay, let's keep going How about you Pete I dug it. Track 2:[13:32] I mean, I echo a lot of what Tim said. I mean, I feel like a great opening track. I really got some some some cure vibes here. I really felt like this song had, Yeah, just I heard a lot of the cure in here. I think Gord's vocals, clearly this is a record and we'll kind of get into it with more songs and stuff. Not just, I feel like there's so many songs that probably killed it live on this record, but that Gord's vocals really just keep evolving into something new. I mean, I feel like every member of the band grows a lot, but he's just, it's like everybody takes three steps forward and Gord takes like nine. You know, he skips where everybody just takes steps. It's crazy, man. Track 3:[14:36] Completely. Track 2:[14:37] That's not like a diss on anybody in the band. It's just, I think he thinks differently, or he thought differently, either way, I dug this song. I thought it was a great opener. The second track, Summer's Killing Us, yeah, this is another one where the vocals really do it for me. Um, there's a, there's a part, well, during the chorus, when Gord's singing, um, Summer is Killing Us, like his voice is cracking. You can hear it breaking on the recording. And it's just like, it doesn't crack. Like it's, it just fits. It's perfect. And you're like, this guy's, this guy's, he's redlining the engine and the car is still going. you, You know what I mean? Track 3:[15:33] Like, and the car, I think, has like, 300,000 kilometers on it, you know? Yeah, and it's just like, go, go, go, who cares? Track 1:[15:43] Yeah, they could sing, sing, sing all day. Track 2:[15:47] Yeah, it's I mean, it's had its oil changes and services, I'm sure. Track 3:[15:51] Exactly. Track 2:[15:52] The drums, another thing about the drums on this, I watched some, well, you guys know, I'll talk about a little more later songs, but the drums on this song, A song that just seemslike it's probably so much fun to play for Jonny Faye. Just the stops, the fills, just, it just seemed like if anybody's having a blast, it's him and Gord Downie are just fucking having a ball to this song. Track 3:[16:20] I think you've commented on that before, too. And this one, this one I noticed, you know, first listen was like, oh, he's having fun. There's some fills in there, and that made me think this one live, you know, probably varied a little bit, but probably just kicked ass, too. Yeah, I think. Track 2:[16:39] Yeah, and I gotta say, this is gonna sound really bad, so I want to frame it right. I just want to throw this in because I feel like if I didn't throw it in, I'd be... My initial thought... So this is 2004, right? Yeah. 2003, 2004. 2004 you think when they're recording writing this song I got just Gord's vocals and his phrasing very much got some like early 2000s emo vibes to it. I actually heard and I don't mean this in a disrespectful way So no, no do not give away my address JD. I don't I mean Canada's a far away from Spain, but I got getting hip to the hip calm. Yeah for for comments Emo my ass No, but I really heard I heard a dashboard confessional song Yes pretty mind-blowing, you know Yeah, okay. You hear me? Track 3:[18:20] That band always sings about summer, said no one ever. So this one, you could just go. There's awesome stops, there's a good bridge, there's... A few times on this album I think there's more of a focus on just I don't know how to say it Pete but just a better rhythm guitar less riffy like the feel like this album has riff sections thatare a little bit more defined or declared maybe yeah yeah yeah this one gourds at like the three-minute He's like, whoo, you know when he left that it is so good I love that. I love that. Track 1:[19:05] I mean I like exhausted slash. Track 3:[19:06] I'm awesome slash I don't even know what the other slash would be but it's like it's great Yeah, if you're having a moment and you stop and you can actually breathe and do thatwhoo I mean you're having a good day like something's going on something's going on that you're enjoying or you're relieved But I also thought this song was like a song about being tiredand touring and working. Also, you know, maybe some of the research I did, that maybe there were some references again to the South, or slavery, or prison life, you know, that's just like, summer's killing us, youknow? It's amazing and beautiful and tough at the same time. That's kind of what I thought about this song. It's, it felt, this is a few times I have had this happen where the song feels long, but it's like measured in a good way. It's like, it's just, there's enough verses, enough choruses. Track 1:[20:12] I think this is one of the longer songs on the record. Track 3:[20:15] Yeah, yeah. This was, this was fun. Track 2:[20:19] This song, this song also, I just wanted to throw this in too, because I kind of forgot to mention it, one of the cool things about it is that it just goes from this, the chorus is sofucking, but then when it goes back into like the verse, it just, it brings it down again. It just, it just, it flattens it like a, like a compressor. It just flattens it really quick and just makes it even again. You're like, whoo, like the dynamic of the band recordings. It's really cool. That's a hard thing to pull off, man. Track 1:[20:53] I really regret not seeing this tour. Like, really. I have so much regret not seeing this tour. Because this is the first tour that I missed since the beginning. This is the first one that I didn't go see a show. And listening to the record now, it's like, oh man, it's again, so much of it seems to be written to be live, you know? Track 3:[21:37] Back then. I mean, if we go back to 2004, you know, this is like the era, politics aside, because we'll probably get into that, but this is like the era when shit online started to take off,you know? Everybody's looked at YouTube. Some of your friends might be listening to Pandora, which at that time had the best radio feature. You could like mix stations and you know There's a lot there's a lot going on electronically The zeros are ones then i'm pretty sure i heard about this song and um, I was telling amy wifeamy yesterday this story about gus This polar bear from central park and uh how they they just deduced that, He was depressed And amy's like no shit polar bear and Activity it was likeyeah, I mean a polar bear's life is what? [22:39] Sleeping, drinking, killing, eating, fucking. I mean, let's put a polar bear in captivity and see how hyped he is. I mean, that's just terrible. So this is amazing that they, I guess, Gord, I don't know who exactly picked up on the story and wrote this one. And, you know, this is also where there was some, maybe the beginning of this album with some political under things here as well but there's this first guitar riff at the beginning of thissong Pete I'm sure you heard it but there's like this there's this weird guitar kind of distortion distortion yeah like that that attack at the beginning is like I wish also I mean live it wouldprobably been so fun to hear that I'm sure it varied a little bit but that's like that outro that outro live must have been so yeah banging yeah drums are huge in this one you know and i'vejust i dug this song it was it was fun there's i could go on and on about it but you know just this poor guy gus he's staring at food all day at the zoo i mean he would eat all these people yesgawking at him so of course he's suffering from depression this is like during this era, scientists were like, he might be depressed. [24:06] Bears, animals can have sentiments of depression. [24:11] It's fucking hilarious. Terrible. Track 3:[26:13] I had the same sentiment for sure. Track 2:[26:17] It's the fucking tiger, the lion of this record. What else? I would say I literally, I literally wrote, I literally wrote that, that, that, that I would be cracking balls a little bit blue, a little bit blue over people's heads. But no, it's the tiger, the lion of this record. And I feel like Neil Young is a lot of guitar on this this record is very Neil Young focused. Track 2:[36:26] It's pretty sad, though, that we're at, that stage, I mean, to bring it back to the record and sort of to not bring it back to the record, because musically, I feel like this song, you guyssummed it up. But in terms of what JD said about the one thing I thought about this song, I kept thinking about was Gord and if he was alive today and this band was alive today. And I say that because he was such a unifying icon for Canada and the band was, I mean, the guy could bring people together completely. And I think America's been divided for a long time. Tim and I both know that pretty well and anybody from the outside who's windowed… That's like his West Coasters, right? You guys really have felt it. Track 3:[41:52] I love the simplicity of this one. It's quick. You know, what we are is what we lack. That song was just like, if anything's going to make you think about oneself and what you're portraying and working on, or I don't know, that statement just slapped me. There's Gord, I think, is faintly doing his own backup singing in this one, if you really crank it in your headphones, and it's fucking awesome, and it was even kind of cute. I just dug it. The chorus, or maybe it's a verse, I don't know, the la-la-oh-oh-yas, you know, just simple, good rock and roll. Apparently, he's poking fun at Toby Keith with this song. Track 2:[45:03] Yeah, I dug the song. I thought, I thought this is another one that would have been awesome live. The groove was just fantastic. There's a line that he delivers that I'm sure you guys all noticed, but I love the the way it's, one is stares into the blur, stares into the glare, stares into the queer. And it's just fucking, like the way he delivers it, I was like, what is he saying there? And I had to look up the lyrics, cause it was so cool. Cool. Johnny Faye, literally, I don't know what it is, man. But like, this is when he's around early 2000. He started like getting like destroying crash cymbals. And I know I pointed out to you guys this week as I was watching the video, like there's a, there's a concert they were playing, maybe it was at the Fillmore where he just broke a fuckingcymbal, because the motherfucker hit it so hard. And you can see a guy replacing the cymbal like just coming in. Track 3:[46:04] He has a drum tech, you know? Track 2:[46:06] Oh, yeah, I know. Well, I mean, he's got something to come in and do it. But like, middle of the song, guy's got to come in and replace the cymbal. I love it. Track 3:[46:14] So cool. Track 2:[46:14] So cool. This is this song and a number of others to point out at the end of the song, if you're wearing headphones, you can hear a couple drumsticks click. Mm hmm. Oh, so this is this is one of the many Easter eggs on this record. Track 2:[46:47] But I feel like these songs are like, it's just a signal to like, that was Johnny's song. Like, all the ones that have those, this is Johnny's song. Because he just fucking ripped on these ones. Track 3:[46:59] Yeah, I feel like when a drummer does that, when a drummer just slaps down the sticks, It's like at the end of a good meal, and you just set your knife and fork down, and you'relike, fuck. Just nailed it. And drummers do that with drummers that care. When bands nail it, you can't. I wish I could produce, because I would love to just yell at musicians, and tell them they're awesome, and tell them they're terrible. Track 2:[47:26] Just kidding. Track 3:[47:28] Just kidding. But that's that sound. That's like that triumphant sound of just killing it. Track 1:[47:34] I win. Yeah, touchdown. We move next to Back, in fact. Back to New Orleans. This is the second geographical song on the record of three, which is interesting. But it's also a trip back to New Orleans. And I can't think of many other bands that would have a song as iconic as New Orleans is sinking, which would still be so heavy in the tourrotation and then they release another song with the same name in it. I know that sounds like really trivial but it's interesting to me. It's really interesting. And this is a very different look at New Orleans and a very different sound but I dig this song. Track 3:[48:23] Did they play there? Chady? They played like a small clubs there, right? Track 1:[48:29] Yeah, likely. Yeah down in the down in the south. They weren't you know quite as As big as they were on the west coast and across the border for sure there was yeah They always but they always played like I mean they would do like au.s. Track 3:[48:45] Tour that would be like 40 dates probably, you know, like they they were fairly thorough There was some reference it with this one about him him going back to New Orleans withfriends or something, just for vacation. And I guess maybe in part this is about that visit, because he found places he wanted to go to that were closed, or... Track 1:[49:08] Oh, okay. It's post-Katrina? Track 3:[49:11] I mean, it's 2004. Track 2:[49:11] No, it's pre-Katrina. Track 1:[49:13] Yeah. Track 3:[49:13] Pre-Katrina. Track 1:[49:14] Okay. Track 3:[49:16] I thought this, you know, it's probably the most beautiful song on the album. It's just serene. I don't know, it's love, it's death, it's fading, you know, rashing away the smiles. It's like, fuck, that's just like storing up in your heart for the future, you know, it's just gorgeous guitar during the chorus. It's just, this is a great one. Track 2:[49:39] Yeah, I thought that, I think this probably might be one of the better, if not one of the best hip songs. And I say that, I don't say that lightly. I think it's a really good song and yeah, JD, I mean, I wrote the notes like, what's the deal with New Orleans? You know, why? Just the song was beautiful. There's the lead in to it and then throughout the song, Rob Baker's using what I think by that time was probably pretty dialed in. He was using an Ebo on his guitar, which is like one of those. You ever seen one of those before? No. I've never been able to use it. I'm not a good enough guitar player to be able to use it. Track 1:[50:27] You stop. Track 2:[50:27] No, dude, they're fucking hard to use. Track 1:[50:29] Everybody go out and buy the record, Marchika, and the first one is out. The second one is in production? Track 2:[50:39] So the the the ebow is like a light it's like a ultraviolet light on this thing and you hold it over the guitar string and it it vibrates the string so it makes it sound like a violin bow henceebow electric bow. Oh okay I had no idea. Track 3:[50:57] Me neither. Track 2:[50:58] It's an amazing effect and it's really cool um some guys can pull it off with like volume and sustain but like he's not He's using an EBO on this shit. And it's fucking, it's just a testament to the, like how talented these guys are. how you can. Take what we've heard for the first five songs of this record and then bring it to this and just you're like transported to New Orleans and just you just I thought I kept thinking I saw NewOrleans in this and then hearing this song I felt like God I wish I could have heard this live at like Red Rocks. Track 2:[51:39] Clear sky completely pitch black No lights, just drop the lights. Give me a spotlight on Gordon, nothing else. And Rob Baker during the EBO, but other than that. Track 2:[52:12] The, I dug this song. The fucking melody in this song is just, it's wild. I dug it. I dug it. It has a cool, it straps you in a little bit, like kind of soft and easy, but it just builds. I feel like the lyrics to this song are scathing. I didn't dig much into the meaning. But like reading them, just reading them once, I think when I had listened to it a number of times, I was like, Whoa, whoever or whatever this ismaking reference to is a tense subject. Track 3:[53:00] Yeah, so to speak. Gord's angry. Track 1:[53:03] Can you guys be more specific? Track 2:[53:08] If I'd brought up lyrics, I could've. Track 3:[53:10] I mean, on that note, I heard this song and I knew these guys were recording in Seattle and I figure that probably at this point in their career, probably not everything is writtenbefore recording, you know, like ahead of time, weeks or anything. And I imagine these guys, you know, what are they doing, staying in some hotel in Seattle near this recording studio? And the fucking news during this era is nonstop all the time. You know, it's just like, bad news all the time about the war and GWB. And I mean, I wrote, you know, the heaviness of this song, I wrote, we're bombarded by by fear, we were then and now, fear and despair, and then driven out to be sold by hope, tarnishedby soldiers dying, or not having proper access to healthcare, or being addicts, or suicide rates, you know, when vets return from all of our glorious wars, and it's just kind of like the bandfeeling. That the only way that anyone can attack this kind of corporate war machine that's happening is Is to sing about it, you know produce art about it there's a line in there that it keeps theeconomy alive it's like This song is the fuck that bullshit song, you know, you're everywhere point of the war man smedley butler's War is a racket. Track 2:[54:38] Yeah, you haven't read it. It's pretty it's pretty quick read Yeah. Fuck, yeah, I got a lot of what was going on during this time in this record. It felt very like, if I closed my eyes and listened to this record and I had no idea when it was made, I would have been like, 2003, 2005, somewhere in there. And not just because of the music itself, but yeah, because the content of it was just But this is another one that has drumsticks sound, putting down the drumsticks at the end. So this is another one. Yeah. This is the second song that uses a slide too, so I'm not a big fan of the slide, but It's hard to not enjoy it when it's placed properly. And a song, if it's done well. So I think this song does a good job. Track 3:[55:43] I mean, sometimes there's a time and a place. I don't know. It's more of a historical feature to guitar playing for me. I can't imagine some new song that would really enjoy that's featuring a slide. Track 1:[55:58] Well, that's why I was so strange that Vaccination Scar was the first single. Especially when Heaven is a Better Place Today is such a banger to open the record. Yeah, why yeah Don't know. Don't know. I mean it wasn't it wasn't having this place better place today Wasn't a single at all. The singles were vaccination scar. It can't be Nashville every night and then Gus Was the third single which is like pretty ambitious for a band to release that as a, single Yeah are gonna get that. That's right, that's right. Sothey're well past giving a fuck about trying to use singles to bring people in. Yeah, yeah. Track 3:[56:46] Which, how wonderful. Track 1:[56:48] How wonderful, right? Track 3:[56:49] How wonderful. Track 1:[56:50] They're just doing it for art's sake. Track 2:[56:51] Freeing. Track 3:[56:54] I mean, I have a close cousin of mine who plays in a band here in Portland, I'll give him a quick plug, 40 feet tall. And they're super fun. And they just hit it so hard and they have a few total fuck it songs and they do covers every once in a while. They're courageous in their art, which I love, but it's one of those things also that not everybody gets. Sometimes I think maybe the hip missed some listeners in the USA because fucking half Half the countries are dipshits. Track 2:[57:35] You know what, and Tim, I don't disagree with you on there too, but I will say one thing too, just being from America and now not living there, and I know you've lived in Russiafor for some time too, Tim, but. I think the difference with Russia and the United States, and this is somebody who hasn't lived in Russia, but there's somebody who's also lived outside the United States. I think America is the most, probably the most propagandized country in the world that doesn't know it's being propagandized. Like at least in Russia, you're like, yeah, this is all bullshit, but we just kind of go along with it anyway. The United States, like people actually believe like when they watch like FoxNews or MSNBC, They actually believe the shit they're seeing on TV. And so when I think about, like both the left and the right, when I think about a band like this, I think like Americans attention span is like that of a fucking housefly. They couldn't appreciate this fucking band if they had a gun to their head. Could be. Most couldn't, dude. They just couldn't. Track 2:[1:00:08] Popping a cold Coors Light. There's some really low tone. This is another song and this record really opened up my eyes because I feel like I've been a bit of a fucking Rob Baker fanboy. I'll cop to that. Track 2:[1:00:27] Last couple of pods, but Paul Langlois is a fucking solid guitar player, dude. You don't notice it unless you look to it. As a matter of fact, one of the things I was thinking of on this song... And also this week and I was watching some live hit videos and I challenge anybody in the community to do this. Listen to a song or and or watch a live recording a live, you know, performance. Watch it five times and each time focus on the instrument of the person you're focusing on and listen to them play their instrument. It is fucking cool. And I did that a number of times with Paul Aigloire. I've done it many times with Rob Baker more than I care to admit. Track So taking a cue from the awesome "High Infidelity" flick, we present our "Top 5" of our favourite skinbeaters.  We look at not only technical skill and reputation but influence and impact as well.
