Today's edition of Midday on Music continues now with two great musician friends of Midday joining Tom in Studio A: They are Robin Bullock, who has appeared as a solo artist and as part of Helicon, and Sue Richards, who is a member of Ensemble Galilei. We streamed their performance today on WYPR Facebook Page, and you can watch the video here, beginning at 36:00 into the feed. The duo plays two tunes from the Highland Ramble CD: ----Loftus Jones---- by Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan, and ----Farmors Brudpolska,---- a traditional 19th century Swedish wedding polska.Robin Bullock and Sue Richards are playing at 7:30pm tonight at the Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore, as part of the Common Ground on the Hill Concert Series. If you miss them tonight, they’ll be back in Baltimore on December 6th at Govans Presbyterian Church, and Robin will be playing a solo all-Bach concert at An Die Musik in Baltimore on November 1st.

I find it intriguing that I know the names of lots famous male composers through the centuries: Turlough O'Carolan, Mozart, Bach. But I can't name even one woman. So I got really excited to talk with Apryl Knight at Sherwood Forest Faire a few weeks back. She had me captivated by her knowledge of women in music through centuries.   But first, I have a big change to share. I started this month with the goal to raise $1200 on Patreon for my next album. Sadly, I've only raised about $100 in the past 18 days. There are lots of reasons for that. But one of the biggest is that I think crowdfunding will work much better on Kickstarter.   And so I'm pleased to announce a new Kickstarter for my Firefly album. Go to marcgunn.com/kickstarter to find out more about it, pledge your support, and get some great rewards.   I have one more Facebook Live scheduled for next Tuesday at 11 am Central. That's all of the live internet shows planned. If you want free internet shows, join me on Patreon. YouTube just started offering free live streaming. So I'm gonna give that a shot next month.   Apryl Knight has been playing music since she was 3 years old. She plays the bowed psaltery and the hurdy gurdy at Renaissance festivals SCA events around the country. She does it solo as well as with her band Tulstin Troubadours.    She started telling me about women in music in history. I decided to sit down and find out more through an interview. She shared some of her favorite medieval women in music, plus thoughts on traveling as a solo female on the road. And her favorite app while traveling as a vegan too.   Right now, she's making a Thing a Week on YouTube. You can also support her on Patreon. Email us at  garyandruth@celticmythpodshow.com, or call us using Speakpipe   The First Shoots of Spring by James Olin Oden Samhain's March: A Winter's Journey James Olin Oden is singer/songwriter of Celtic and Americana music out of Raleigh, NC. Does it move the heart or cause the foot to stomp? If so, then James Olin Oden plays it. With me it's always been about what moves the heart. The songs I sing are compelling stories whose telling must be told over and over again. The stories range from dark acts that should not be forgotten to the silly revelries that we should never forsake. My hope is that as my heart is moved by the music so too may yours be moved. Sláinte Mhór...James James Olin Oden plays Vocals, Classical Guitar, Bodhran, Bones, & Whistles. We are privileged to bring you his superb track, The First Shoots of Spring, which comes from the album, Samhain's March. You can find out more about James on his website or on his Contributor Page.   The Trooping Fairies & the Tale of Frank Martin by W. B. Yeats W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) This superb and charming piece comes from an anthology of Irish folklore, edited by W. B. Yeats in 1888 called Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry. Many of these stories are from books which are archived at this site; some are from books which have yet to be converted to etext or now-rare source material. He selected many of the best (and often funniest) tales from other writers such as Lady Wilde, Croker, Lover, Hyde, and Carelton. Yeats wrote introductory material and notes to many of these stories. William Butler Yeats was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years he served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was born and educated in Dublin, but spent his childhood in County Sligo. He studied poetry in his youth and from an early age was fascinated by both Irish legends and the occult. Those topics feature in the first phase of his work, which lasted roughly until the turn of the 20th century. His earliest volume of verse was published in 1889 and those slow-paced and lyrical poems display debts to Edmund Spenser, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the Pre-Raphaelite poets. sheeogue sidheóg deenee shee daoine sidhe Book of Armagh Tuatha De Danān slooa-shee sheagh sidhe Marcra shee daoine maithe lepra-caun Ballisodare Plain-a-Bawn pooka A brief sample of "A Pretty Maid Milking her Cow" by Black Dog Boonzy can be heard in this piece, as can two harp pieces by Turlough O'Carolan played by Darren Raleigh (see below). Another brief sample of the pipes heard in the ancient tune of "Lough Erne Shore" by Andy Irvine and Paul Brady can also be heard where mentioned in the text. You can find the full text of the book on the Sacred Texts website and this piece at Trooping Fairies.   The Rabbit Song by S. J. Tucker Blessings Fans of all ages come to see SJ Tucker for more than just the stories she weaves into her songwriting -- her musical talents are second to none. Her style is classified, at times, as "Celtic Blues", while her instrumental and vocal talents earn comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, and Jeff Buckley. Not confined to one type of song or another, SJ spans opera, chant, and rockergrrl, employing deft guitar hands and the bluesy, powerful voice of a 300lb gospel singer--finely contained in a petite frame which earned her first band the name 'Skinny White Chick' by accident. An incredibly prolific writer, SJ Tucker has composed over 130 original songs and independently produced six full-length studio albums. SJ Tucker started on the road with her first album in 2004, and she is taking the nation by storm -- on her own power -- state by state. We are really proud to bring you her Rabbit's Song from her album Blessings, a powerful exploration of totems and the Trickster just perfect for Ostara. You can find out more about Sooj on her website at sjtucker.com or on her Contributor Page.   Blodeuwedd by Rick Allen The Inconstant Bard An immortal voice and talent. The lyrical, bardic poetry of a Celtic warrior and spiritual seeker, this recording of Rick Allen's unforgettable voice, accompanied by the musical gifts of The Constant Cohorts, brings the listener back to the days of yore when Druids thrived, the Green Man freely roamed the land, passionate Love was a path to the Mysteries, the Muse was a Lady in White, “. . . and men were true.” This is Rick's own Tribute to the Maiden of Flowers, Blodeuwedd. Please visit our Contributor page to learn more about Rick Allen's story.   Celtic Maidens by Ceri Norman Celtic Maidens From a young age Ceri Norman's love of mythology and history has inspired her. After gaining a degree studying History and English, Ceri worked in libraries and museums sharing this love with the people she met. Seeing the pleasure that books and history gave, Ceri started writing fiction that people of all ages could enjoy and relate to. As a deeply spiritual person she prefers her writing to have a spiritual and mystical flavour. Celtic Maidens is a supernatural tale of love, lives & obsession set against the dramatic scenery of the Welsh Mountains. Celtic Maidens tells the story of Siân Derwyn whose life holds few pleasures except for her friends, her interest in local folklore and the standing stones until the day that Ryan Ackley arrives in her remote Welsh village. Learn more about Ceri Norman on her website or on her Contributor Page.   Atholl Highlander by Connemara Stone Company Original The Connemara Stone Company (CSC) are a Celtic Folk Rock and Folk Rock Band from Germany. They have now been together since 1995. In this period of time they have advanced from a Local Band to a fairly well known Band in the Celtic Folk Rock scene. Their main strength is in their ability to entertain a wider public with their own style of Celtic music in a modern Folk Rock style, appealing to all generations and a audience that are not only folk fans. Their ever increasing fan base comes from all walks of live and various tastes in music. This great, high-energy, track - Atholl Highlander - is from their brand new, 2013 album, Original, released on St. Patrick's Day. Teaspoon Ring   Oak, Broom & Meadowsweet by Damh the Bard The Spirit of Albion Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. This beautiful track, Oak, Broom & Meadowsweet, comes from Damh's third CD - The Spirit of Albion; a superb album that captures the full range of this master's talent. One of the better-known compositions of the great Turlough O'Carolan. Tony has set this arrangement in 4/4 rather than 2/2 or “cut” time, that is 4 groups of 2 quavers rather than 2 groups of 4. This is a subtle difference although with a tune played at the somewhat slower tempo than a reel, or even a hornpipe, the difference is barely noticeable. On reflection this tune could be written as 4/4 or 2/2. In the first part of the tune there is one high B (6th bar). And the second part of the tune has some tricky left hand work so we’ve included in the transcription the left hand fingering Tony uses for playing the tune. Note that your local Classical Guitar Club members will probably be horrified by some of the fingerings but they work for Tony! The finger number is notated directly under the relevant note. Where there is no fingering markings you can assume that normal open position fingering applies. There's a rather busy chord progression in the accompaniment, and Tony suggests you will need to spend longer than usual learning it. The chords are G, D, Em, C, A7 and D/F#.
