Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 29ú lá de mí Aibreán, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1977 bhí na Aontachtaí ag iarradh labhair leis na dílsigh chun stop a chur agus aistarraing na hoibrithe ar feadh cúpla lá. I 1994 bhí an banc taisce chun moladh a thabhairt chuig an rialtas go mbeadh an bhainc náisiúnta sa tír ábalta cheannaigh ceannas den acmhainn stát. I 1997 dhún an tionad snámha I nDurlas de bharr gur tharla loitiméireacht leis an chostas timpeall 3 mhíle punt. Chuaigh an drong isteach ón bhfuinneog sín agus thóg siad na soicéad ón mballa agus chaith siad an múchtóir dóiteáin agus an scipéad airgid isteach sa linn snámha. I 2011 tar éis 92 bhliain bhuaigh An Caiseal RFC agus bhí Brendan O'Connor mar chaptaen den fhoireann an bhliain sin agus d'ardaigh sé an corn nuair a bhuaigh siad I gcoinne Cork Con. Sin Spandau Ballet le True – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1983. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2001 chuir Rod Stewart cheist chun a móideanna pósta a athnuachan. Dúirt sé go raibh sé ag teastáil de bharr go raibh na ngealltanas a rinne sé níos mó ná 600 bhliain d'aois agus nach raibh siad ag shroich 35 bhliain d'aois. I 2007 shroich The Arctic Monkeys uimhir a haon lena halbam Favourite Worst Nightmare. Bhí siad ar barr na cairteacha ar feadh trí sheachtain. Bhí an t-albam ainmnithe don Mercury Prize an bhliain sin agus bhuaigh siad an t-albam is mó ag The Brit Awards an bhliain tar éis. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh aisteoir Jerry Seinfeld I Meiriceá I 1954 agus rugadh aisteoir Daniel Day-Lewis sa Bhreatain ar an lá seo I 1957 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 29th of April, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1977: the united unionist action council called on the norths loyalist workers for a total stoppage and withdrawal of labour from mid night on monday next. 1994: the trustee savings bank was expected to submit formal proposals to government that the national irish bank should be allowed to buy control of the state asset 1997 - THURLES Swimming Pool was forced to close as a result of an act of vandalism costing in the region of £3,000. The gang gained access tby a skylight, They then set about pulling sockets from the wall and threw the fire extinguisher, and cash register into the pool. 2011 - HAIL the conquering Kings of Cashel. On the greatest day in the clubs 92 year history team captain Brendan O'Connor from Cashel RFC , got to finally lift the Munster Junior Cup defeating sixteen time winners Cork Con 23 - 20 That was Spandau Ballet with True – the biggest song on this day in 1983. Onto music news on this day In 2001 Rod Stewart asked for a change in wedding vows bringing them up to-date and to be treated like a dog licence. Stewart said 'a change is needed because they've been in existence for 600 years when people used to live until they were only 35'. 2007 Arctic Monkeys started a three-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare. The album was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize and won Best British Album at the 2008 Brit Awards. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – actor and comedian Jerry Seinfeld was born in 1954 and actor Daniel Day-Lewis was born on this day in the UK in 1957 and this is some of the stuff he has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.
I've surprised myself with my reaction to this plan to open a bottle store right across the road from the bus interchange, in central Christchurch. But I think it's a terrible idea. And it's a gut thing. Seeing all the stuff that goes on in the central city, my gut tells me that that's probably the last place you'd want a bottle store. I'm surprised by the way that I feel about it because, normally, I'd probably look at this proposal and think that if people are going to buy booze, they'll buy booze. And, normally, I'd probably say that there's already booze available in town, so why have a problem with a bottle store? But I'm different on this one. And I'm not alone. The police. Health bosses. They're all against it. So is Liz Gordon, who is with the Communities Against Alcohol Harm group. She says the bus interchange is one of the most crime-ridden areas in the country and it's not an appropriate location for a bottle store. I don't know about that claim about the interchange being one of the worst places in the country for crime. But I agree with her with that it's not the area to have a bottle store. She's also opposing another proposed bottle store just down the road on the ground floor of an apartment block on the corner of Manchester and Cashel streets. And I'm with her on that one too. Where this has come from, is the owners of the Fresh Choice supermarket in The Crossing want to open-up a bottle store next door to their existing business. I know the people who are pro the bottle store will say that there's an alcohol ban in the centre of town so it's not as if people would be able to buy alcohol and start guzzling it outside. My response to that would be, yes, there is an alcohol ban. But there's also a ban on people having their dog in town with no lead - but people still do it. All sorts of things are banned - but people still do them. And it's not as if there's a dire shortage of places to buy alcohol in the centre of town. Another person opposed to the new bottle shop is Medical Officer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton. She says there are already 10 other off-licence locations within one kilometre of the proposed site and 19 locations in close proximity where drinks can be bought over-the-bar. The argument in favour of the bottle store is that there are way more people living in the central city these days and it makes sense to be able to buy the type of alcohol that you can't get at the supermarkets. So your spirits and your RTDs. And I get that argument. But there's enough going on - particularly in that part of the central city - without needing to add a bottle shop into the mix. It's being reported today that, in their licence application, the supermarket owners say they don't anticipate any alcohol-related problems from the bottle store, if they get approval to open it. But they would say that, wouldn't they? As if they'd say anything different.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Arthur went to Dublin and he used the 100 pounds to pay for the 9000 year lease in St. James's Gate. So when you go to the storehouse in Dublin now, you'll see that the first 10 years of his brewing career in Dublin was brewing an ale, and that was the ale that his father taught him in Cashel. If it was not for the Archbishop of Cashel, we would not have Guinness. And therefore, we consider ourselves the Godfather of Guinness.”We're in great company with Adriaan Bartels, the award-winning General Manager of Cashel Palace, a magnificent regal manor in the bountiful heart of Ireland, Tipperary's Golden Vale. With origins in the 18th century, the manor is meticulously restored and exquisitely reimagined as a five-star luxury hotel, enveloped in nature and overlooked by ancient history. Here, a tapestry of timeless hospitality, proud Irish heritage, and sustainable modern practices are seamlessly woven together for guests to experience Cashel Palace in all its glory – from its notable thoroughbred horse breeding ties to its acclaimed humble beginnings of Guinness. In this episode, Adriaan reminds us what it is about our ties to and dreams of Ireland – from the rich soil to the flowing spirits to the convivial music – that inspire so many of us to paint the world green on St. Patrick's Day. Sláinte!Top Takeaways[2:45] How Irish hospitality thrives on genuine curiosity, with locals eagerly connecting you to their world by finding those delightful threads that make strangers feel like distant family.[6:40] From archbishops to aristocracy, from country leaders to leading ladies, from a hundred pounds to the first Guinness pints, Cashel Palace boasts a rich and illustrious history of notable hospitality dating back to 1732. [10:20] Adriaan learned to wear many hats during Cashel Palace's transformation – at one moment an architect, the next an interior designer, soon after a general manager – all the while learning to balance Irish traditions and heritage with innovation for modern travelers and times. [19:45] Watch and listen as Cashel Palace transforms from a buzzing hub of daytime activity and attentive service to an intimate evening retreat complemented with fireside drinks, creating the perfect atmosphere for guests to unwind.[23:40] Local produce and purveyors are always in season at Cashel Palace as their commitment to sustainability sets the table for some of Ireland's most flavorful bounty – from the native Irish bee's wild honey to the centuries-old mulberry tree's fruit jam.[28:50] Cashel Palace is the crown jewel of the equine world and its owners, The Magnier Family, have been at the very heart of Ireland's rich tapestry of thoroughbred racing and breeding legacy for generations – which is why they invite guests to experience exciting programming and exclusive access to some of the most prestigious racing farms in the world.[32:30] From Cashel Palace's doorstep, Tipperary's Golden Vale reveals its soul through untouched small-town authenticity – ancient pubs with crackling fires and quaint shops nestled in a landscape that captures Ireland's timeless pastoral beauty.[35:40] For those travelers seeking a climate sanctuary growing rarer in our warming world, you might just discover that the true pot of gold at the rainbow's end is Ireland's emerald-green landscape.Notable Mentions Rock of CashelThe Story of GuinnessGuinness Brewery, DublinCoolmore Stud and BallydoyleLarkins Bar & Restaurant on Lough DergMikey Ryan's Bar & Kitchen Donoghue's Traditional Irish BarThe Origins of HalloweenSkellig Michael Island from Star Wars Visit For YourselfCashel Palace Website | @cashelpalace Give the Palace a Call | +3536262002

The new commission-free Love Tipperary Gift Card has gone live in the county with over 190 businesses accepting the card, including national brands and independent businesses. Tipperary businesses say the new gift card will drive footfall in local towns, take 'shop local' to the next level and provide an easy way to reward staff. County Tipperary Chamber and Tipperary County Council are behind the newly launched county-wide gift card for the towns of Carrick-On-Suir, Clonmel, Cahir, Cashel, Tipperary Town, Thurles, Templemore, Nenagh and Roscrea. Available to buy online as physical gift cards or digital e-cards, a range of shops, restaurants, salons, attractions and services are participating. Edel Kennedy is the owner of ladieswear boutique Edel's Boutique in Nenagh and said the gift card is a positive move for the county: "Nenagh is a thriving market town with many wonderful restaurants, coffee shops and of course boutiques. It's a shopper's paradise, we have it all! Nenagh's success can definitely be attributed to the fact that so many of the businesses are managed and run by the owners. We really do care about our customers and our town. Edel's Boutique has been in Nenagh for 19 years and has seen so many changes in that time, including plenty of challenges for small business owners. "The gift card is a fantastic initiative because it keeps money in the community. Small businesses have to pay commission to accept the national gift cards which is tough when margins are already tight. But the Love Tipperary Gift Card is commission free. As we approach the Christmas trading period, we as business owners are very excited for the launch of the gift card. We feel positive that we can take 'shop local' to the next level and put Tipperary on the map. "In Ireland, we have such a great incentive to reward staff tax free through the Small Benefit Exemption scheme and what better way to reward staff than the Love Tipperary Gift Card, encouraging employees to shop in the county, driving footfall and helping create thriving towns where people want to live and work. It's a no-brainer for organisations." A unique feature of the gift card is that it can be spent with both national brands and independent businesses, including New Look in Clonmel. Aisling O'Meara is the store manager and said: "New Look in Clonmel is one of the most profitable in Ireland but even as a national brand, we'd noticed a drop in footfall and were keen to look at initiatives to increase both footfall and dwell time in Clonmel. When we heard about the Love Tipperary Gift Card, we said 'this is amazing and how do we get involved'. "Even though New Look is a big brand, we're all local businesses staffed by local people and we all have pride in our town. By working together and backing each other through the gift card, we can help our town and our businesses to succeed. "The great thing about the Love Tipperary Gift Card is that it has to be spent in Tipperary county and will encourage people to visit Clonmel and other towns. I think the choice on offer with the card is really good. People will look at where to spend it, visit one business, and likely stay to try others. We have a reward and recognition scheme at our store, and this year we will buy the Love Tipperary Gift Card because it puts the money we invest in rewards back into our town." 5th generation Tipperary Town business O'Rahelly Sports is also participating. Bryan O'Rahelly said the gift card promotes the county: "The fact that people will have a card in their wallet - physical or digital - that has Tipperary on it is brilliant. It's a bit of advertising for our county and it's a push for people to shop local who might not have otherwise. It also means it's less likely to be forgotten about. "Some of the national gift cards have a 10% commission for businesses to accept the card whereas the Love Tipperary Gift Card has no commission, so when people buy the Love Tipperary Gift Card as a present, or orga...

This week we chat to Anthony Candon about one of the greatest men in Irish history — Muirchertach Ua Briain (c.1050–1119), king of Munster, arguably king of all Ireland, and great-grandson of Brian Bóru. Tony tells us all about Muirchertach's reputation as a great military leader, his influence on the Irish Church, his international status outside of Ireland, the astute marriage alliances he brokered for his daughters with famous Norwegian king Magnus Barelegs and Arnulf de Montgomery, brother of Robert de Bellême, earl of Shrewsbury. We also chat how appropriate a camel is as a diplomatic gift, the Rock of Cashel and decapitated head trophies in medieval Irish warfare. To get there is just a short flight or ferry ride from Great Britain, and yet arriving can feel like stepping into another world of history, mystery and breathtaking beauty. As Halloween approaches, there's no better time to delve into Ireland's ancient traditions. Did you know that the Island of Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween? It originates from the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and even today the spirit of Samhain lingers, with festivals and celebrations that pay homage to the old ways.To help us explore some more of Ireland's incredible locations and the stories behind them, I'm joined by John O'Ceallaigh, one of our best loved travel journalists and editors, and an Ireland native from Galway on the west coast of Ireland. John's deep connection to his country, and his experience writing about it, makes him the perfect guide for our journey today. We're going to hear his Irish travel diaries today, from the wild beauty of Connemara and charming village of Roundstone to the Wild Atlantic Way's luxurious coastal castles, and windswept islands, like Aran and Achill, taking in the sights, tastes and sounds along the way because of course Ireland is a feast for all senses. Brought to you in partnership with Tripadvisor and Tourism Ireland, whether you're planning your next adventure or simply dreaming of distant shores, let this episode be your gateway to Ireland's legendary landscapes.Destination Recap: Connemara, Co. As more mothers enter the world of entrepreneurship, studies show that balancing passion and family can be overwhelming - even paralyzing. The pressure to turn a passion into a profitable business while keeping up with the demands of parenting can leave many feeling unsure of where to start or whether they have what it takes. With social media filled with perfect images of other moms seemingly "doing it all," it's easy to feel like you're falling short if your journey isn't picture-perfect. But here's the truth: Success doesn't require perfection, and you don't need to have it all figured out before you begin. What if instead of waiting for the "right time" or having the perfect setup, you took the chance by “failing forward”? Could being messy and imperfect actually be the secret to making your passion profitable? In this episode, I talk to cookbook and Substack author, Caroline Chambers, who built a successful business while balancing motherhood. She shares why action is the key to clarity and how to start small, monetize trust, and grow your passion without waiting for the perfect moment. Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why You Should Be Open to Change If you're feeling stuck, it might be because the path you're on isn't where your true passion lies, and trying something new could open doors you never knew existed. Are you holding yourself back by staying in your current routine? “Failing Forward” is Okay Success comes from learning, not perfection. What could you achieve if you let go of needing everything to be perfect and just started? Turn Trust into a Business Building real trust with your community encourages support and can create opportunities for making money. Have you thought about how you could turn the trust people have in you into something valuable? Guest Bio Caroline Chambers grew up in the kitchen on her mom's hip, learning how to cook in their Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home. Her professional food career began in her early twenties when she worked as a chef and caterer. After a stint in a professional test kitchen, Caro struck out on her own as a freelancer, developing recipes for a host of publications as well as brands such as Boursin Cheese and Kim Crawford Wine, and in 2018, she published her first cookbook, Just Married. In 2020—at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic—Caro began sharing her recipes and connecting with home cooks on Instagram (@carochambers ), and launched her newsletter, What to Cook When You Don't Feel Like Cooking, which flew to the top of the Substack charts; her podcast, So Into That, followed in 2023. Caro's latest cookbook, What To Cook When You Don't Feel Like Cooking, is available for pre-order and will be out on August 13, 2024. Caro lives in Carmel Valley, California, with her husband, George, and their three young sons, Mattis, Calum, and Cashel—one of whom can almost always be found in the kitchen on her hip. County Tipperary Chamber and Tipperary County Council are collaborating to introduce a county-wide gift card to champion 'shop local' and boost the local economy. The Tipperary Gift Card is set to launch pre-Christmas as part of efforts to drive footfall and spend across the county and in the towns of Carrick-On-Suir, Clonmel, Cahir, Cashel, Tipperary Town, Thurles, Templemore, Nenagh and Roscrea. Once launched, the Tipperary Gift Card will only be able to be spent with registered businesses, in person, locking spend into the county. There will be a 0% commission rate for the first 12 months for Tipperary businesses to accept the new gift card, keeping 100% of the transaction within the business. All types of businesses are eligible to accept the card, including retail, hospitality, leisure and tourism, health/beauty and services, with no additional equipment required. Businesses don't have to be a County Tipperary Chamber member to be a part of the new gift card. Michelle Aylward, Chief Executive at County Tipperary Chamber said: "Local businesses are the backbone of our Tipperary communities and now is the time for us to work together on a single shop local gift card for the whole county that will be transformative for our towns. "The Tipperary Gift Card is a phenomenal opportunity for Tipperary businesses to bring people through their doors with money to spend. With the zero commission to accept the card, there is no reason for a business not to be a part of this gift card. And as all types of consumer facing businesses can accept the card, it spreads out the benefit across Tipperary. It will provide tangible support for businesses and help to pull our communities together." Sinead Carr, C.E. of Tipperary County Council stated: "The availability of such an opportunity in County Tipperary is something I have long envisaged and I am particularly delighted to see that it will be in place for the Christmas 2024 period. Registering to accept the forthcoming Tipperary Gift Card is straightforward and cost-free. As we approach the key Christmas trading period, being a part of the gift card is a route to new revenue and new customers." The Tipperary Gift Card will be part of the multi award winning Town & City Gift Card concept active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Drogheda, Letterkenny, Sligo and Waterford. Over €7 million Town & City Gift Cards were sold in Ireland in 2023, with around 80% of sales to organisations for staff rewards and incentives. Colin Munro is the managing director of Miconex and said: "What makes the Tipperary Gift Card unique is the technology behind it. The card is Mastercard backed so the balance gets automatically updated when customers spend. Customers can check their balance in moments using the QR code on the gift card. And there will be a digital version of the card that customers can upload to digital wallets. This all makes the process of accepting the gift card friction-free for businesses, and that is vital." Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Cllr Declan Burgess stated: "The collaboration between County Tipperary Chamber and Tipperary County Council on the forthcoming county-wide Tipperary Gift Card is a fantastic example of organisations joining together for the benefit of their communities both socially and economically. When we look at the success of Town & City Gift Card programmes across Ireland, the potential of the new gift card to keep Tipperary money in Tipperary towns is considerable." See more stories here.

The Wild Atlantic Way, which stretches from Donegal to Cork, over 2,500 winding kms of glorious scenery, beaches, villages and hotels, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and we will be interviewing famous hoteliers along this world famous route over the coming months. The first two Connemara Destination episodes focus on Connemara with interviews with two hoteliers Brian McEvilly from the Cashel House Hotel and Henry Hodgson from Currarevagh House who are both founding members of Ireland's Blue Book collection, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.I love the Blue Book because they are mostly family owned and run Irish Country House Hotels, Manor Houses, castles and restaurants. You really get to see Irish hospitality at its best and the properties are generally old country houses, so you get a real sense of the history of the area you are staying in. A Blue Book voucher would always be my top travel gift recommendation and their website is https://www.irelands-blue-book.ie.Situated in the heart of Connemara, the Cashel House Hotel overlooks the majestic Cashel Bay on the west coast of Ireland. This classic country house retreat was built in the 19th century and converted to a family-run four-star hotel in 1968 by the McEvilly family. I had a great chat with Brian all about Connemara, the Wild Atlantic Way, tip and recommendations and the history of his family's hotel.
