In this episode of The Future is Human, I'm joined by Conor McGlynn — a writer and PhD researcher at Harvard's Program on Science, Technology, and Society — to discuss his Compact essay "AI and the Myth of the Machine." Drawing on the 20th-century technology critic Lewis Mumford, we talk about techno-optimism as a kind of secular faith, what the Amish and Orthodox Jewish communities understand about adopting technology on their own terms, why the data-center boom feels so undemocratic, and why technological "doom" is not a future event but something already unfolding around us. In Clare's view, the problem isn't porn per se – it's patriarchal porn; Pornographic content that was once niche and difficult to find – including incest, racism and rape - has been normalised and is widely consumed. Clare joins Anita to discuss the harms of extreme pornography. The prevalence of chronic pain is higher among women than men, but for millions of people living with it, the hardest part can be the sense that it is taking over their life. New research from University of Warwick shows how ‘mental defeat' drives suffering and causes people with chronic pain to withdraw from everyday activities. Anita speaks to Professor Nicole Tang, lead researcher and Fiona, a former nurse who has lived with chronic pain for over 30 years.Samantha Harvey, winner of the 2024 Booker Prize with novel Orbital, has adapted Barbara Pym's 1977 book - Quartet in Autumn - for the stage. In the second of our compilation interviews carried out on the Murder Week press day, we interview a slew of stars including the incredibly sweet Sydney Martin, off the wall James Cartwright and telly legend Pauline McLynn! As with last week, these interviews are all available to listen to on our YouTube channel, and a number of them are quite visual in parts, so we'd definitely recommend that option if you're mulling over which one to go with. Sound quality is variable again, we're afraid, but we did have the help of a couple of hardworking listeners who did what they could to take the edge off the tinniness... Wherever you listen, we hope you enjoy these!

McGlynn argues Russia uses nuclear signaling as everyday coercion, exploits Western self-deterrence, and conducts long-running manipulation by targeting societal weak points, making resilience depend on trust and social cohesion. They discuss Russia's expansionist pattern until meeting a firm frontier, the need to impose asymmetric costs in the hybrid domain, and the West's performative messaging and slow procurement cycles versus Ukraine's rapid wartime innovation. McGlynn warns Russia's aims remain eliminating Ukrainian sovereignty and testing NATO if successful, stresses cooperation with Ukraine as Europe's key security guarantee, and describes work to build an occupied-territories insights hub to better document occupation realities.----------

Jesse hosts the Learnings and Missteps podcast and introduces guest Maya McGlynn, a Pennsylvania-based construction influencer, writer, photographer, and fractional support partner who focuses on “the people behind the work.” Jesse gives an LnM Family shout-out to Bryce Ager for reviewing one of Jesse's construction trainings, and notes his business offers training, coaching, and consulting. Maya explains her passion for blue-collar stories comes from building relationships and bridging gaps between management and shop/field workers, emphasizing retention and the need for leaders to “give a shit,” not just attract more people into the industry. They discuss treating people well as foundational to solving construction's workforce challenges, rising interest in more human-centered workplaces, and how companies that only rely on pay raises and ignore relationships will be left behind. As the full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth year, resistance to Russian occupation has undergone a radical transformation. The public displays of defiance that defined the war's early days — with civilians blocking tanks and holding street protests — have long been crushed by the Kremlin's ruthless occupation regime. By blending systematic brutality, bureaucracy, and pervasive surveillance, Russia has sought to extinguish dissent and erase Ukrainian identity in occupied regions. But this has only forced the resistance deeper underground. In this episode of The Naked Pravda, deputy editor Eilish Hart sits down with Dr. Jade McGlynn, the head of the Ukraine and Russia program at the Center for Statecraft and National Security at King's College London, to discuss this shift. Drawing on her extensive field research and recent report for the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Dr. McGlynn analyzes how resistance efforts have adapted to survive life behind the front lines. When emotional outbursts, anxiety, or learning struggles show up, the root cause isn't always obvious. In this episode, I sit down with Niki McGlynn, a UK-based homeopath specialising in primitive reflex integration and ADHD coaching, to unpack how early movement patterns shape the nervous system. We explore how retained primitive reflexes can affect emotional regulation, focus, and learning, including links to dyslexia and ADHD. Niki breaks down key reflexes like the Moro and neck reflexes and explains what their impact can look like in everyday life. She also shares practical, movement-based ways parents can support integration in both children and adults. Episode Highlights: 02:16 - When personal healing sparks a career shift 06:09 - Understanding Primitive Reflexes 07:24 - Is it ever too late to integrate reflexes? 10:12 - Seeing Irlen syndrome from a new perspective 11:41 - What mums should look out for to make sure reflexes are properly integrated 14:35 - The timeline of primitive reflex development 16:59 - Understanding the fear paralysis reflex 19:31 - How urinary incontinence links to spinal reflexes 20:35 - How homeopathy and movement complement each other 23:18 - When parenting courses don't feel enough 28:04 - Niki's Daughter's Dyslexia Journey 31:05 - Why bad handwriting might be a reflex issue 35:04 - Common misconception about primitive reflexes 38:10 - Finding Practitioners for Reflex Integration About my Guests: Niki McGlynn trained as a homeopath in 2000, she always had an interest in neurodiversity, writing her dissertation on Can Homeopathy Improve Communication in Children with Autism. After she and her daughter both received a dyslexia diagnosis in 2012 she looked for additional help and discovered the incredible world of primitive reflexes. She began using primitive reflex integration techniques with her existing clients, continued training to be an instructor and teach other therapists and now runs her own training. Understanding primitive reflexes, how they manifest and how to encourage them to integrate has been an incredible journey that sits very comfortably alongside homeopathy as it is another truly holistic practice. Clients can use simple movements at home with their child or on themselves which gives them some responsibility for their own care and will help remedies do their work. Niki runs regular training courses all over the country and is happy to provide training to any group of people if they can organise a venue. David Miller, Simon McGlynn & Chris Connelly in conversation with David Eastaugh THE SHEER ACTION OF FINI TRIBE is the first retrospective of the band, curated and designed by the band. It includes a wealth of archival photographs, an essay by original member ANDY MCGREGOR, who also designed the sleeve, and essays by longtime friend SHIRLEY MANSON and author ALASTAIR MCKAY, an early champion of the band. The release features the first legendary JOHN PEEL SESSION produced by DALE GRIFFIN and originally broadcast in May 1985. FINI TRIBE was born into the cash-poor but culturally-wealthy environs of post-punk Edinburgh in the very early 80s – 1980 to be almost precise. A tiny three piece with no drummer would soon swell into a muscular six piece with inherited or cheaply-purchased instruments. Band members CHRIS CONNELLY, SIMON MCGLYNN, ANDY MCGREGOR, DAVIE MILLER, PHILIP PINSKY, and JOHN VICK haunted the cold, damp warrens of the Niddry Street and Blair Street rehearsal rooms, just off the high street in Old Town Edinburgh.

While it's easy to pick on concierge medicine practice for its highly visible moniker, small medical offices outside of this niche space are often more guilty of this than concierge practices. Here are ten compelling reasons why this marketing strategy is flawed: By Editor-in-Chief, Concierge Medicine Today While concierge medicine aims to deliver exceptional care, making the physician the product can lead to significant setbacks. To succeed, practices must prioritize relationships, foster teamwork, and emphasize patient outcomes. By adopting a balanced approach that values both the physician's expertise and the contributions of the broader healthcare team, concierge medicine can achieve lasting success and genuinely serve its patients. 1. Unrealistic Expectations Could Lead to Burnout Prioritizing the doctor as a product places immense pressure on physicians, contributing to burnout—affecting nearly 42% of doctors (Maslach et al., 2018). A physician who is overwhelmed can't provide the high-quality care patients deserve. On the one hand, it doesn't take long to resent the relentless pressure and unrealistic expectations. On the other hand, it's far too easy to get addicted to them – to like being at the center too much. Way too much. 2. Erosion of Personal Connection Reducing physicians to products undermines essential personal relationships crucial to healthcare. Strong patient-physician bonds foster trust and lead to better health outcomes (Hojat et al., 2011). If you were no longer working and kicked out of the practice tomorrow, what would be left of your practice -- would it and could it survive without you?! 3. Increased Competition for Patient Loyalty This model promotes a focus on attracting new patients rather than nurturing existing ones, jeopardizing long-term relationships. Personalized care strategies tend to yield better retention than mere marketing tactics. 4. Unsustainable Business Models Investing heavily in the physician's image rather than improving patient care systems often leads to unstable business practices (MGMA, 2020). 5. Unrealistic Patient Expectations Marketing healthcare around a physician's capabilities can foster unrealistic expectations, leaving patients disappointed when their complex needs aren't met. If you were no longer working and kicked out of the practice tomorrow, what would be left of your practice -- would it and could it survive without you?! 6. Neglect of Team-Based Care Emphasizing the individual physician sidelines the contributions of the healthcare team, compromising overall quality. Effective care requires collaboration among all team members (McGlynn et al., 2003). 7. Misguided Investment in Technology When the focus is on the physician, practices may overlook necessary investments in technology that enhance care and efficiency, ultimately affecting patient satisfaction (Albrecht et al., 2019). On the one hand, it doesn't take long to resent the relentless pressure and unrealistic expectations. On the other hand, it's far too easy to get addicted to them – to like being at the center too much. Way too much. 8. Diminished Patient Diversity An overemphasis on a single physician can narrow patient demographics, reducing the practice's accessibility and diversity, which are crucial for enriching healthcare. 9. Revenue Over Care Focus When financial gain becomes the primary driver, patient satisfaction often declines. Research underscores that patient-centric practices yield better health outcomes and greater cost-effectiveness (National Academy of Medicine, 2019). 10. Missed Opportunities for Continuous Improvement Focusing solely on the doctor can stifle innovation. Continuous education and system enhancements are vital in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. Once upon a time Man Must Die released two albums on Relapse Records and toured an absolute shit load. I actually remember when they toured with Machine Head, which is a fairly impressive thing for any metal band to achieve. Man Must Die were a death metal band, and in some quarters they were even called a technical death metal band. A term that vocalist, and our good pal, Joe disputes. And with good reason - technical death metal isn't really his bag. However, he does love Cryptopsy, and he has an extensive knowledge of death metal. And metal in general, really. So this week we thought it'd be a good idea to ask him to come along to talk about Cryptopsy, get his take on the various sub genres of death metal and to generally shoot the shit about a truly technical death metal band. Paul McGlynn, the father of Jack McGlynn, has been developing soccer talent in New York City (and now western Connecticut) since the beginning of the century. Not only does he have the perspective of a parent of a pro player, he coached Tim Weah from ages 9 to 12, he's in the trenches of the ongoing chaos between MLS academies and youth clubs, and he watches soccer all the time. Great conversation. Highly recommend.MORE DETAIL ON THE ROME TRIP: https://earthlydelights.notion.site/Italia-25-with-Scuffed-1a3f3f1e0145804793e8e83e982168fdThere are still a few slots on the roster: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfp2O1bIr5KNSymt3ayP3ctERCooDo3ADM5Kf_kSHpmr6ITMg/viewform Subscribe to Scuffed on Patreon! McGlynn pays tribute to some fantastic work being done at Sligo Rovers, whilst Drogheda United continue to improve as they begin their European odyssey later in the year.

Gun stores across Illinois are preparing for the possible outcome of a federal court striking down the state's gun and magazine ban. Sometime after Oct. 20, Southern District of Illinois federal Judge Stephen McGlynn could rule on the consolidated case challenging the ban. Some expect he will issue a permanent injunction. This could be his second strike against the law. On preliminary grounds last year, McGlynn issued an injunction that lasted six days before the appeals court put a hold on his order. The appeals court eventually overturned the preliminary injunction and remanded the case to McGlynn's court to get a final judgment. A bench trial on the case wrapped up Sept. 20. McGlynn gave both sides 30 days to filed final briefs on the issues.

We welcome Chief Dave McGlynn back to the show to discuss all things leadership related. With all the emphasis on leadership these days, there are seldom discussions had on the dark side of leadership: the sacrifice, loneliness, conflict and stressors that come with being in these roles and positions. We tend to focus on the feel-good parts of leadership, while neglecting the responsibility that comes with making tough decisions and standing tall in the face of adversity. This episode is a deep dive into what it takes to effectively lead, manage (I know it's a dirty word in some circles), and mentor while still maintaining your passion in leading!
