Willie Stewart runs Nyahh Records from his home in Co Leitrim. After releasing the brilliant I Am Kurdish by Mohammad Syfkhan in February, Willie talks about how that album came together and talks about Mohammad's story and musical output. Then he talks through other releases on the label, like Natalia Beylis' collaboration with Eimear Reidy, Ian Lynch's solo debut, and the two compilations from 2023: A Collection of Songs in the Traditional & Sean-Nós Style and Under the Island: Experimental Music in Ireland 1960-1994. Nyahh Records discography on Bandcamp: https://nyahhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/under-the-island-experimental-music-in-ireland-1960-1994 Ley Lines: https://daily.bandcamp.com/ley-lines/ley-lines-february-2024 Mohammad Syfkhan tour dates: March 28: Record Room, Limerick March 29: Bello Bar, Dublin April 4: Vicar Street (Gig for Gaza, w/ ØXN, Junior Brother, Pretty Happy) Mohammad Syfkhan is a Kurdish/Syrian Singer and Bouzouki player. He began playing music in 1980 while he was in college studying nursing. When he got his degree in 1983, Mohammad moved to the city of Raqqa, Syria where he began working as a professional singer and started his own band, The Al-Rabie Band which played concerts, parties, weddings and festivals all over Syria. The Al-Rabie Band were a much sought-after group. Their live sets included Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish and some Western songs as well as Mohammad's own original material. Mohammad continued to play with his band while also working as a surgical nurse until the war broke out in 2011. This unfortunately brought tragedy to Mohammad's family when one of his sons was killed by Isis thus threatening the lives of the rest of his family. His family had no choice but to leave their home and seek safety in Europe. Three of Mohammad's sons were resettled in Germany while Mohammad, his young daughter and wife were taken in by Ireland. Mohammad has spoken at length of his confusion and despair with fundamentalists and how their message is a far cry from the teachings of love and understanding that he considers the true message of Islam. Since arriving in Ireland, Mohammad has used the language of music to integrate into the local community by playing at private parties and concerts. He regularly plays at weddings and events for the Kurdish and Syrian communities all over Ireland and in Germany. He has collaborated with such Irish artists as Martin Hayes, Cormac Begley, Eimear Reidy, Cathal Roche and Vincent Woods. In 2023 he opened for Lankum at the Cork Opera House and received huge applause from the packed out room. Mohammad's own brand of ecstatic music takes elements from Middle Eastern and North African music to create an atmosphere of joy, love and happiness. The songs on ‘I am Kurdish' have been recorded and mixed with the view to make them to suitable for listening to at a small get together or to be played on a big rig at night clubs. Either way, it is a record that will make people dance. Three of the tracks on the album feature accompaniment by two fellow Leitrim-based musicians: composer, improviser, sound artist and saxophonist Cathal Roche and composer, improviser and cellist Eimear Reidy. Mohammad says: “I thank everyone who has stood with me and supported me. And I especially thank the Irish people who have engaged with my music in such a wonderful way. I consider myself lucky to have come to this wonderful country that has welcomed me and all refugees. I thank God for everything, and now, thanks to this wonderful country, I am a musician and have a safe home. Thank you to the Irish government and people for giving me the honour of calling this country my home.”

The bouzouki arrived in Greece following the 1919–1922 war in Asia Minor and the subsequent population exchange between Greece and Turkey. The early bouzoukia mostly had three courses (six strings in three pairs, known as trichordo) and were tuned in different ways, according to the scale one wanted to play. At the end of the 1950s, four-course (tetrachordo) bouzouki started to gain popularity. The four-course bouzouki was made popular by Manolis Chiotis, who also used a tuning akin to standard guitar tuning, which made it easier for guitarists to play bouzouki; this angered purists, but allowed for greater virtuosity and helped elevate the bouzouki into a truly popular instrument capable of a wide range of musical expression. Recently the three-course bouzouki has gained in popularity. The first recording with the four-course instrument was made in 1956.

Bouzouki player Eoin Ó Neill has been a vital part of the Clare music scene, in Western Ireland, for more than 40 years. Through the years he has played and recorded with players like Mary Custy, Sharon Shannon, Kevin Griffin and Miko Russell, as well as tons of local talent both young and old. In 2015 he was given the MÓRglór award for outstanding contribution to traditional music in County Clare. We meet up in Ennis during the Fleadh Nua festival. Since the town is very busy, we record the podcast in Eoin's car just outside town. Eoin is a passionate and spontaneous person, and our conversation bounces around between different topics, including the story of how he discovered his love for the music of Clare, his playing style, his new album “In Session 2”, his passion for discovering and encouraging new talent, how music allows for important ways for people to connect with each other, and many other things! This episode was great for me! I've been playing guitar since the 5th grade. It's been more of a hobby and something I have dreamt about doing professionally but it wasn't on my path. I track lots of guitarists and about 8 years ago I came across Steffen. I was blown away by his style, technical ability and composition. There was something very unique and fresh to his music. Shortly after staring Titans of Transition I made a list of people I would love to interview. Steffen was on the list but it took me months before I worked up the courage to ask him. I thought it was a long shot. After all I am quite far away he is in Denmark and I am in the USA. Also I am quite a few years his senior. He graciously accepted. Thanks Steff! As with all my episodes, I explore Steffen's career and life transitions, from his classical training on violin, cello and piano leading up to his discovery of guitar. He went all in on music and left Gymnasium (High School) to devote more time to his passion and gift-music.Unlike other interviews, I have to admit I geek out a bit with him on guitars, guitar tone and music. Through it all we had a great conversation about transitions, life, music and lessons we have learned along our respective journeys. - Joe MillerThe video version is available HERESteffen's Contact Information:Website Youtube channel Instagram Facebook Twitter Steffen Schackinger was born right in the centre of Denmark - in the capital of the island Fyn - Odense. He started out on the violin as a kid, and moved on to cello and classical piano. With the classical and electric guitar he finally found his right instrument. At the age of 13 he started out as a band guitarist, and he soon earned a reputation, as an extraordinary guitarist.Steffen completed his education as a rhythmic guitarist at The Carl Nielsen Academy of Music, and the self-released cd with the band GRACELANDS - where Steffen sang the lead vocal and played guitar - got major airplay on the Danish radio stations with the songs "Electrified", "Climbing Into Space" and "Supersonic View".Steffen has been recording countless of records as a session musician, along with being a theatre musician on several occasions. He also found himself in a bowtie playing with Symphony Orchestras as well as representing several guitar- and FX producers at guitar clinics. Steffen started out as very young composer, writing classical songs. Now he is writing pop- and rocksongs as well as instrumental songs. For the past years Steffen has been focusing on ethnic music and been finding inspiration in both Irish folk music an Indian Rhythms. The Indian Sitar and the Bouzouki has been added to the list of instruments he's playing. Steffens guitar playing contains elements from rock/hardrock, blues, jazz/fusion and country. He has found inspiration from several of the major guitar heroes - amongst others: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, Robben Ford, Joe Satriani, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Bill Frisell, Van Halen, George Benson, Eric Johnson, Frank Zappa, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Pat Metheny, Albert Lee, Paco De Lucia, John Mcloughlin and Larry Carlton. Also, classic music and composers like Bach, Beethoven, Paganini, Stravinsky and not least Stephen Sondheim have had major influence on the musical development of Steffen Schackinger - as a guitarist and as a composer.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/titansot)

Uilleann pipes and sub-drops. Connor Hoy and Austral share their infectious energy live at the National Celtic Festival. Let's start off with who Austral are: On uilleann pipes and whistle we have Connor Hoy, on fiddle, bouzouki and vocals we have Angus Barbary, on fiddle also we have Caity Brennan, and finally, on guitar, didgeridoo (didgeribone?), cajon, tambourine and other assorted wizardry we have Rhys Crimmin. To follow Austral and to witness the magic for yourself go here: www.australband.com www.facebook.com/australmusic/ www.instagram.com/austral.music/ To buy Austral's music, go here: https://australtradmusic.bandcamp.com/album/austral ... We were so lucky to have a chance to spend an hour with these four at the National Celtic Festival. They even brought a few beers with them. And we started off chatting with Connor about his background because he was in from Adelaide, and it was a good chance to nab him. But the chat soon wondered on to some more other areas - specifically, the momentum and dynamics the band work so hard to create during their live gigs. And which they totally pulled off in front of our audience at the Bendigo Bank Community Room. And as is customary in Blarney Pilgrim interviews, we scored a direct hit on the Planxty Bingo - the first mention of Liam Og O'Flynn, piper and whistle player, and towering figure in traditional music. (The current tally, since you ask, is something like Andy Irvine 572 mentions, Donal Lunny 16, Liam O'Flynn 1, and Christy Moore 1.) So Liam O'Flynn - a carrier of the (uileann) piping tradition into the modern era, through his Planxty work and solo projects. One of which was a double header with poet Seamus Heaney at the Royal Concert Hall (I think) in Glasgow. I was there (I think.) On a cold autumn night listening to Liam play unaccompanied, and Seamus Heaney read - that's an intensely lyrical experience. It's hard to put into words (which doesn't mean I won't give it a shot...heh...) But it was...what...the traditions playing off each other seems too narrow a way of describing it, even though that's what was going on. But there was a tonality to it, the combination of the tone of Liam O'Flynn's pipes, and the timbre of Heaney's voice, his intonation and rhythm and swing. In fact, the common ways of describing music and poetry - tone, rhythm, swing - give you an idea of what it was like. One of those experiences that echoes through your system for a long time after. So hearing Connor mention Liam O'Flynn's impact on him as a young player was really great. And it's always cool to hear the uileann pipes at close quarters. They really work in a room setting - very different to the (Scottish) bagpipes, which a friend of mine used to play in a tiny stone cavern of a bar years ago as a party piece after we finished our main set. Sending the tourists reeling ecstatically out into the night air with ringing ears and blood thundering around their beery bodies. Awesome, fearsome. And it was so, so great to have a live audience with us - thank you everyone who came along. Including Connor's grandmother, who we'll be chatting with in a future episode. She joined us on stage for a quick tune, and we're really excited about talking to her when we make it to Adelaide in the months to come. Look out, too, for an interview with Angus from the band in a future episode, and with Caity too. Thanks again to Austral. Find them when you can, and go see 'em - they're not to be missed. And thanks also to the National Celtic Festival, and Una McAlinden in particular, for the chance to record on location. ...
From a teen growing up in Crumlin in the 90s, to touring the world as a multi-award winning solo artist, Daoirí Farrell shares his incredible journey with us and treats us to a few tunes along the way. To follow Daoirí, and more importantly, to buy his CDs, you can find him here: http://daoiri.com/ https://www.facebook.com/DaoiriFarrell/ ... Where do you start? Maybe the obvious place, the place I first came across his music thanks to a tip from my good mate from Ballycastle, Alex Campbell: his version of The Creggan White Hare. This is the song me and Darren refer to in our intro, a song which at the time of writing has a meagre 1,287,874 views on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPI_tHNjS78 I first heard The Creggan White Hare on the Dick Gaughan / Andy Irvine album 'Parallel Lines.' Which, to be honest, is an album I've never loved. I mean, what's not to love about a collaboration like that? I love Andy Irvine's music, I love Dick Gaughan's music. It should be my all time favourite. And yet, somehow it doesn't quite work for me. Though it does have a very stately version of Dylan's 'My Back Pages.' There's something about Daoirí's version of 'The Creggan White Hare' that I prefer. It's more robust, or something. I mean, it's unstoppable. That's what it is. It has a sense of fate about it. It's existential, man. As for The Pursuit of Farmer Michael Hayes...you can find it on the Planxty album After The Break. There's some interesting info here about possible origins: https://mainlynorfolk.info/folk/songs/thepursuitoffarmermichaelhayes.html We also chat at the end of our interview about 'Christy Moore, Donal Lunny, Jimmy Faulkner, Live In Dublin' - an album I first heard thanks, also, to my pal Alex Campbell. I can remember the cover of that album so clearly, and trying to decipher the newsprint while sitting on Alex's bed. We'd listen over and over again, trying to learn the chords of 'Hey Sandy,' until his mum took pity on us and arrived up with a plate of ham sandwiches and mugs of tea. God love her, she had the patience of a saint. Anyway, it's another album that's worth hunting down if you've not heard it already. https://www.discogs.com/Christy-Moore-Donal-Lunny-Jimmy-Faulkner-Live-In-Dublin/release/2219545 Thanks again Daoirí.

Today we are introducing one of our podcast segments that we like to call the "B-sides". This is where we get to rant about whatever might be on our minds at the time. Sometimes these might be short but sometimes these might go long. It just depends on what we are ranting about at the time. On this episode we are mostly chatting about the first interview on our podcast with Bone Doggie, a musician out of Denton, TX. If you haven’t listened to it, please go check it out. It is a fascinating conversation. Its worth it just to hear him play the Irish Bouzouki on the podcast! As always, you can subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Store and Spotify. While you are at it please leave us a rating and let us know what you think about the show. For more information you can also follow us on Instagram @socialrantingspodcast. Thanks for listening!

Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com It's Tuesday.....that means it's a Tampa Bay Tuesday and I am reviewing "Acropolis Taverna" in Ybor City. The address for Acropolis in Ybor City is: 1833 E 7th Ave, Tampa, FL 33605 They serve Lunch & Dinner Hours Sunday through Thursday - 11:00am - 11:00pm Friday and Saturday - 11:00am - 1:00am Website - www.acropolistaverna.com Phone - 813-242-4545 The Menu is Filled with Healthy Options! Here are a few LUNCH examples: CHARBROILED EGGPLANT: Charbroiled, thick sliced eggplant grilled with crushed red pepper over spring mix with tomatoes, kalamata olives, red onions, halloumi cheese & cucumber. Served with oven toasted pita strips and pomegranate vinaigrette. Tell your waiter “NO” pita strips! & put the dressing on the side! KARPATHOS CHICKEN Seasoned grilled chicken breast, sun-dried tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, red peppers, dolmades, tomatoes, pepperoncini and halloumi cheese over spring greens. Served with toasted pita strips and ̧Acropolis Greek dressing Again…..Tell your waiter “NO” pita strips! & put the dressing on the side! SALMON Grilled Salmon on a bed of spinach with quinoa, grapes, roasted walnuts, red onions and red pepper, topped with carmelized onions. Served with toasted pita strips and mango dressing One more time…..Tell your waiter “NO” pita strips! & put the dressing on the side! They have soups, more salad, vegetarian “MOUSAKA” as we say in NY or Mooosakaa in the rest of the U.S. Delicious Hummus…..They also have What I call …..Babaloo! but is actually called….. Baba Ganouj…..which is Roasted eggplant spread….. topped with extra virgin olive oil. The menu is Filled with healthy options! Just Leave the Pita off your plate and chow down on all these healthy vegetables, fish and meats! Here’s what I ordered the night of the review…. I asked for the best item on the menu……and w/o hesitation, I was told to order…… OCTOPUS!!!!! Now…I’ve had “Calamari” before. That makes me think of the movie “Moon Stuck” where Nicholas Cage’s plays “Ronny Cammareri” and the part in the movie, where the lady who works in the bakery says……”Stop it Ronnie, you’re scaring me” In NY…..the Italians say “Cala maaaa” Us NYers barely finish a word. Regular NYers….who are not Italian….say “Calamari” Getting back on track…..what’s the difference between “Cala Maaa” AND Octopus? Calamari is the Italian word for “Squid.” Squid has an elongated body with tentacles. The meat is white and firmer than Octopus. When cooked right, it should taste firm but NOT rubbery. Octopus has a round head and body with tentacles. The meat is sweet and not firm. You learn a lot when you research things! Never had Octopus before. I said…..bring OUT the OCTOPUS! And….I have to tell you….it was the “most TENDER” Octopus I have EVER had! Grilled octopus marinated in lemon and olive oil vinaigrette with fresh garlic, capers, zucchini and diced tomato . Delicious! For dinner……. I ordered the Grilled FRESH Red Snapper. Now….this comes out as a “Whole” red snapper …..the entire fish….head, EYES, tail….FISH on a plate! It is marinated in rosemary, garlic, extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemons charbroiled and topped with the house lemon herb marinade. You get a choice of two sides. I ordered the Roasted Vegetables and Artichoke Quinoa! I don’t particularly like looking at a FISH Head on my plate, and I certainly don’t like all the bones, but RED SNAPPER is a nice sized fish, where I was able to eatmost of the body meat, w/o biting into any bones. The RED SNAPPER was cooked Perfectly! The meat was falling off of the fish. Made it easy to eat & not get any bones. The Roasted Vegetables were carrots and squash. VERY Good. Seasoned well and tender. The QUINOA was FANTASTIC! Lot’s of YUMMS…..coming out of my mouth! Overall, the meal was absolutely DELICIOUS! Acropolis ….of course…..is known for it’s Delicious and Authentic Greek food…..but Acropolis….also has…….ENTERTAINMENT! A Belly Dancer starts the Entertainment! A beautiful woman dressed for “Belly Dancing” dancing around the entire restaurant, entertaining you while you’re eating. Then……the BIG entertainment begins! Every Hour there is……. Bouzouki Plate Breaking! What the heck is Bouzouki Plate Breaking you ask? It is a Greek custom of breaking plates during celebratory occasions (weddings) When the music is played from the Bouzouki…(like a mandolin) The manager or owner of Acropolis starts the clapping and moves towards the barrel or bucket. He picks up a stack of plates and then as fast as he can………he starts flinging the plates into the bucket, breaking the plates, with pure passion….until the stack in his hand is gone! This is like done in around 5-10 seconds! FAST! Then ……..the crowd reacts to the demonstration with a HUGE “OOPA” if they are satisfied! OOPA literally translates into “Ooops” but in Greek…..it has taken on the “emotional response” and admiration for Breaking the plates in excellent fashion. So the owner of Acropolis wants to hear “OPA” And that’s NOT ALL! The waiters & waitresses line up to do “Zorba Dancing” For all you Millenials out there….look up the 1964 film… “Zorba the Greek.” In the movie…..Alexis Zorbas (played by the famous Anthony Quinn) dances to not only relieve his stress, but to be the “inspirational force” that guides him to confront and finally ……. Overcome the challenges he was facing in life and work. Great movie! It’s a moving, uplifting moment at Acropolis! Patrons are waving napkins and throwing them on the floor as a final gesture of their excitement and admiration for the Bouzouki plate breaker. Lots of fun and great food at Acropolis! The food was fresh, and delicious. The staff were engaging, polite and brought out each dish at the appropriate times. The manager was seen going from table to table making sure the guests were happy. The owner, Sam was fantastic! Not only was a hell of a “plate breaker” I watched him speaking with staff as well as customers, to ensure everyone was having a great evening. How did Acropolis Rate …… Acropolis gets a BIG 2 Thumbs up for it’s fresh and healthy food choices. Don’t look at or touch the Pita’s and you will enjoy your meal at Acropolis. Acropolis also gets a HUGE 2 thumbs up for it’s Entertainment! Really breaks up the evening and gets everyone in the place involved and uplifted! Gunslinger by Garth Brooks. Garth's very last album forever: 2016's Gunslinger. We wish we could say it's a triumphant return to form… but it's more of a flaccid, bland return to form. In the original series of Fill Me In (2008-10) there were rarely (if ever) show notes -- or if there were, they were lost to the blurry mists of time. But seriously, if you're going back to these old chestnuts, do you need show notes?
