Dog Poop Attracts RodentsPicking up after your dog is important, but what is the best way to do it? Cleaning up your dog's poop and putting it in your trash bin is a good start, but it isn't even the best solution. It is important to dispose of dog waste the proper way, as it can bring lots of harm. Dog poop isn't just bad for your lawn, it also attracts some unwanted guests. While flies come to the minds of many, not many people realize that rats are attracted to dog poop. If your pet's waste isn't disposed of properly, rodents may begin appearing.Dog Poop Isn't FertilizerFirst, let's address how dog poop is bad for your lawn. The experts at Vetstreet.com explain that the intense levels of nitrogen in your dog's urine and poop can cause your yard to die. It's too much for your grass to handle, which is why cleaning up your pet's poop as soon as possible is very important to both your lawn's health and yours. Not only does dog poop contain harmful bacteria, but it can leave behind a residue that can linger in the soil for years, causing harm to the environment. Furthermore, any waste that is washed away by rain, sprinklers, or other means may affect drinking water and shellfish.Rodents Can Come CrawlingNot only does dog poop in your yard affect your lawn and your health, but it brings unwanted rodents to your property. Yes, rats and mice eat your dog's poop. According to Chewy, dog poop is a primary food source for rats and mice. If that isn't bad enough, it's also important to remember that rats and mice can find their way into just about anything. Therefore, your trash bins aren't safe from rodents, either. According to Vector Control, garbage exposed to rodents causes the population of rats to grow which means an increase of harmful diseases and bacteria, bringing danger to the community.Keep Pests AwaySince dog poop seems to be harmful no matter where it is and it attracts rodents, what is the best way to dispose of your dog's poop? Cleaning up your pet's waste, disposing of your trash immediately and keeping dog poop in a garbage can that is rodent proof are possible solutions to the problem at hand. If that seems like a lot of work to go through to keep you and your family safe, then consider a well trained, professional, and affordable dog poop clean up service like POOP 911. We not only remove the filthy dog poop in your yard, but we'll sanitize your yard with pet-friendly products, so you know you're doing your part to keep your dog and the environment safe. Furthermore, by having POOP 911 clean up your dog's poop, rodents won't get to it, either. Here at POOP 911, we like to keep you informed, and we love helping pet owners keep their yards clean, safe, and rodent free. GUEST: Christie Keith is a communications and media consultant with an exclusive focus on animal welfare and veterinary medicine. Her current and recent clients include The Shelter Pet Project, the first public service campaign promoting an animal welfare cause in the Ad Council's 60-year history; Dr. Marty Becker, author and veterinarian; Maddie's Fund; Million Cat Challenge; Dr. Patty Khuly, veterinarian and author; and Vetstreet.com. As a writer and editor, Christie's work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle/SFGate.com, Bark Magazine, and the nationally syndicated newspaper feature "Pet Connection." She has been a speaker at a number of animal sheltering conferences such as the HSUS Animal Care Expo, Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets, and the National No-Kill Conference. MAIN QUESTION: How can animal organizations avoid blaming the public in their messaging when talking about the challenges they face? TAKEAWAYS: Your organization relies upon your community to make donations to support your work, to adopt animals, and volunteer. If we inadvertently blame the community for animal surrenders, we poison that well and hurt our own ability to be successful. In the past, shelters and rescue groups fell into a pattern of blaming irresponsible pet owners, backyard breeders, and an indifferent public for the problems we were facing. These were real feelings and understandable, but this approach turned out to be undermining our own success. It is important to avoid falling into these old patterns. When creating communications aimed at the public, figure out who the audience is and what you want them to do. This will guide your language. Avoid using words like “dumping” or “abandoning” pets. People are turning to you for help with an animal they got from you – that's what we want them to do. Give support instead of judgment. Invite members of the public to be heroes by becoming a foster caregiver, adopting a pet or donating to help pets in need. Share how rewarding it is to foster or adopt. In Episode 134 of the RV Podcast, we talk about Blacktop Boondocking, free or very low cost self-contained overnight camping on blacktop, specifically parking lots at businesses and places that welcome RVer, like casinos, Walmarts, Cracker Barrel restaurants and many others. Unlike traditional boondocking in wild places that allow dispersed camping like national and state forests or Bureau of Land Management holdings out West, Blacktop Boondocking has its own distinctive rules. This week, we talk to an expert who sets us right on the benefits and etiquette of Blacktop Boondocking. [spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #134 April 5, 2017 of The RV Podcast: JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK Jennifer Well, it's April and for most RVers who live in the Midwest, mountain and northern states, that means it's time to de-winterize their rigs, draining out all that sticky, sweet-smelling pink antifreeze, sanitizing and filling their fresh water tanks for a new RV season. For a lot of folks, one of the hardest things about dewinterizing is to make that water taste clean, without that bleach odor or aftertaste that seems to linger from the sanitizing process. A listener of the RV Podcast named Bob from the state of Arkansas has sent in a great tip about how to get rid of that chlorine or bleach taste. Bob suggests using one cup of white vinegar for every 15 gallons of fresh water. You can her him at [spp-timestamp time="6:37"] into the interview. We love to get your tips and suggestions for the RV lifestyle. You can use the “Leave Voicemail” link at Roadtreking.com. She asks for our recommendations. Bo is 16 months old this week which, in dog years, makes him a very active teenager. We've shared before about finding places to exercise Bo as we travel. We love to find various off leash dog parks and have found it's also a great way to get to know the towns and places we're traveling through. [spp-timestamp time="29:20"] Bo and his K9 pals Sushi and Princess playing at an off-leash dog park in Fort Walton Beach, FL But this week, we want to stress just how important it is for your pets to get exercise. We know it's important for people. But with dogs, it is even more important. According to Vetstreet.com, exercise a necessity for maintaining optimal physical and mental well-being in your dog. As with people,
