On this episode of Tent Show Radio, legendary Southern Rock band The Ozark Mountain Daredevils perform a career spanning set during their thrilling return to the Big Top stage. One of Southern rock's more inventive exponents, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils have always been indefinable in terms of music genres, producing sounds of country-rock and electric bluegrass all on the same record, writing lyrics both whimsical and poetic, and singing harmonies that send shivers up your spine. The Daredevils were formed in 1971 by the songwriting team of John Dillon, Randle Chowning, Larry Lee, and Steve Cash; with Michael "Supe" Granda and Buddy Brayfield completing the line-up. When the band emerged with their self-titled debut in 1973, they evoked not only the spirit of the age but the place from which they sprang: Springfield, Missouri, and the Ozarks—a place of pop, rock, country, mountain music, and much more. The critically acclaimed record, recorded in London under the direction of producer Glyn Johns, contained the US Top 30 single "If You Wanna Get To Heaven", while a second success, "Jackie Blue', which reached #3, came from the band's follow-up collection, “It'll Shine When It Shines.” Recorded at Randle Chowning's ranch, these records achieved “gold” status and showcased the group's strong harmonies and intuitive musicianship. Following a hiatus, the Daredevils were reactivated in the late 1980's by Dillon, Cash and Granda. The resulting album, “Modern History” found the band with a new lease on life as they carried on into the new millennium with a new line-up featuring Dillon, Cash, Granda, Ron Gremp (drums) and Bill Brown (guitar/vocals). In the years that followed, the Daredevils released a number of major label and independent record label recordings, traveled millions of miles performing throughout North America and Europe, and continued to grow and maintain a loyal and dedicated fan base throughout the world. Now more than 50 years since their founding, their songs are still regularly played on Classic Radio stations. With two of the original co-founders still on board, John Dillon (guitar, mandolin, vocals) & Michael "Supe" Granda (bass, vocals), their current lineup of talented musicians includes Ron Gremp (drums), Ruell Chappell (vocals, percussion), Bill Jones (woodwinds, horns), Dave Painter (lead guitar), Nick Sibley (harmonica, guitar, vocals), Kelly Brown (keyboard), and Molly Healey (fiddle). With their signature sound and style remaining intact and vibrant, they continue to delight Dareheads with their live performances. Fly By Night is the album where Rush takes its final form. Original drummer John Rutsey left the group shortly after their eponymously named debut album was released. Health problems related to diabetes made it difficult for Rutsey on tour. He was replaced on bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee's 21st birthday by the soon-to-be legendary percussionist, Neil Peart. Together with guitarist Alex Lifeson, the trio would become icons in the prog rock genre. Most of the material for this album was written while the band was on tour opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann. Rush went into the studios for about 5 days to record the album, which was mixed by January when the group flew to Winnipeg for a concert on January 15th. Fly By Night would also be the album in which Peart takes over much of the lyrical work with the songs, while Lee and Lifeson compose much of the music. The lyrical styles are noticeably different between the first and second album, complete with literary themes which reflect Peart's habit as an avid reader. This album is also the one which saw Rush moving in a decidedly prog rock direction. This could be attributed to Neal "The Professor" Peart's lyrics, but the entire band wanted each song to show a different side to their writing and playing, creating a diversity of styles in the tracks.Friend of the show Sean Mooney stands in for WTR Rush Ambassador, Bruce Fricks to bring us this classic prog rock album. AnthemThe lead-off track to the album was originally conceived by Lee and Lifeson while Rutsey was still in the band. The name of the track is from an Ayn Rand novella, as do the lyrics. Peart's inspiration by Rand would return when the group penned their fourth album, 2112.Beneath, Between and BehindThis is the first song to feature Peart's lyrics. It was about the discovery of America and the birth of the United States. The lyrics reference the American dream and growth as well as some darker history like wars and immigration. "Beneath the noble birth between the proudest words behind the beauty, cracks appear. Once with heads held high they sand out to the sky why do their shadows bow in fear?"Best I CanOne of two tracks written before Peart joined the band, this song's music and lyrics were both penned by Geddy Lee, and the song saw regular performance during Rush's first North American tour. The lyrics have a more rock theme than Peart's more literary efforts. "Don't give me speeches 'cause they're oh so droll. Leave me alone, let me rock and roll."Fly By NightThe "hit" single from the album leads off side 2, and peaked at number 88 on the Billboard charts. The lyrics reflect Peart's first trip away from home when he traveled from Canada to England. "Fly by night, goodbye, my dear. My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture The Stepford WivesThis dystopian sci-fi thriller finds a couple in the town to Stepford, where the women mysteriously transform into submissive domesticated housewives. STAFF PICKS:Song for America by Kansas Wayne leads off the staff picks with the single cut to a 10-minute epic paying tribute to America. It reflects the beauty that can be seen from a jet, but also the ugliness of industrialization. The 5/4 time interspersed in the song marks it as a prog rock masterpiece.Jackie Blue by Ozark Mountain DaredevilsRob brings us a cool groove about a woman in pursuit of happiness, but who never stays with anything long enough to find happiness. The original inspiration was a guy they met in Los Angeles who was strung out on drugs. Drummer Larry Lee takes lead duties for this song which made it to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.#9 Dream by John Lennon Lynch features a song released before he was born from Lennon's "Walls and Bridges" album, which coincidentally went to number 9 on the charts. The song literally came from a dream Lennon had, with no inspiration. The "mystery voice" in the background is Lennon's girlfriend at the time, May Pang. Several of the lyrics are nonsense words.Adam's Apple by Aerosmith Sean finishes the staff picks with a deep cut from Aerosmith. The lyrics are inspired by the story of the temptation of Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 3. It appears on Aerosmith's album "Toys in the Attic," which Steve Tyler wanted to name "Love at First Bite" at one point, a line from this song. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Express by BT Express We finish off this week's podcast with in instrumental hit from the early disco era.

What could possibly happen to make a music festival be tagged as "3 Days of Sodom and Gomorrah?" How about toilets on fire? Drugs being sold as openly as sex? Young rock fans strolling naked through the streets of Sedalia, Missouri as they ditched their clothing to cope with the summer heat? Yes, all this and more descended on this small Missouri town in a festival that was marketed, in part, to town officials as a method of showcasing bluegrass music. There was a little bluegrass but there was a whole lot more of rock. As bad as the behavior of many of the fans was, that was how great the music was. Twenty-seven bands in all, including The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Eagles, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, REO Speedwagon, and more performed for hot, thirsty, and high rock fans in an epic and unforgettable weekend of rock (mostly) music.

You always hear about one-hit wonders . . . well, what about two- or three-hit wonders? This week the Modern Musicology team (Anthony Williams, Stephanie Seymour and Rob Levy) talks about those acts that made it beyond one hit. But what makes a two- or three-hit wonder? Some bands had a handful of singles and that was it for them, never to be heard from again. But then a massive band with a huge album catalog like Deep Purple, Judas Priest and Pink Floyd also only had a couple of Top 40 hits. And what about bands that were massive on MTV but didn't get much radio play? We cover it all! We talk about such diverse acts as Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Skid Row, the Hooters, the Motels, the Knack, Fine Young Cannibals, Men Without Hats, and many more! Remember "Jackie Blue" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils?? We sure do! What band is your favorite two- or three-hit wonder? Let us know! When playing solo, or when playing with her full band, multi-instrumentalist Molly Healey is a looping extraordinaire. She creates a piece of music, loops that piece, then skillfully plays accompaniment, on instruments including cello, violin and guitar. That sound, combined with her classically-trained voice, produces atmospheric music – often with full string arrangements performed entirely by Molly, multi-tracking in the studio. She's opened for and played with many bands – and in addition to her solo work, continues to play violin for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils.Find out more at mollyhealey.comHave a comment or question for DJ? Episode 156 is here! Time to head back to 1980 to take a look at the headlines, charts, and paid advertisements in Billboard magazine, dated April 26, 1980. Al Johnson, Ian Hunter, and Ozark Mountain Daredevils are a few of the other artists within the pages, plus an editorial from a light salesman that tries to convince the American public that disco is NOT dead. She's been making music for more than 60 years - recording every year or 18 months since the mid 60's. This week 82 year old JUDY COLLINS is celebrating the release of her 51st album. It's called “Spellbound” for good reason and it's the first of hers with all original material. I caught up with Judy at her home in New York. The OZARK MOUNTAIN DAREDEVILS don't really belong in the one hit wonder category because they actually had two massive hits. They guys formed their country rock band in 1972 and after 6 albums, still occasionally play together. We meet bassist MICHAEL 'SUPE' GRANDA. In the segment that's all about you, a listener has asked me to find one of his favourite artists who used to play with ERIC CLAPTON'S Derek and the Dominoes. I tracked down BOBBY WHITLOCK and the chat we have is simply awesome. If you'd like me to track someone down for an interview… just send me a message through my website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au Join us! "A Breath Of Fresh Air" with Sandy Kaye.

A guitar player's guitar player. A “riff archivist”. D. Clinton Thompson has been a guitar hero of mine since the first time I saw him play onstage. His mastery of guitar, combined with an obvious great sense of humor, complements his unique vocal style. I really think you'll enjoy this fascinating, often hilarious discussion with Donnie about his early days, crossing paths with Lou Whitney, and the many bands and artists that he's contributed his incredible talents to.Photo by Lin WilsonBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!
