I was recently diagnosed with ADHD. At the grand old age of 45. If you haven't heard of it before, that stands of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - a disorder that affects the functioning of the brain and includes symptoms such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. I've found it uncharacteristically difficult to talk/write about, but I'm sharing it here in the hope it might be of help (even just as a reminder that everyone has their ‘things' to deal with). In this special podcast episode, I share the story of how I discovered I had ADHD and why I believe it's my secret superpower as an entrepreneur. {Click on the player above to listen to the podcast episode and/or read on for a detailed overview. Scroll down to the bottom to read the show notes including all the links mentioned in this episode} By the time you get to the end of this post, there's a good chance you'll be thinking one of three things (or maybe all three). But I do those things too But you don't seem the slightest bit ‘hyperactive' Janet ADHD isn't real...it's just your personality type So, to put it into context...yes we all do some of the things I share with you here sometimes. What makes the difference with ADHD is (a) the frequency with which the symptoms occur (b) the extent to which it affects your life. It's also worth mentioning that ADHD shows up differently in different people….particularly in girls and women (which is why it's often missed). For example, the hyperactivity and/or restlessness can be mental rather than physical (as in my case). And while educational/professional achievement in people with ADHD is often lower, it can show up in high achievers too. In fact the ability to 'hyperfocus' - to zone in on a particular area of interest and block out everything else - can be EXACTLY the thing that helps you to become a high achiever (another reason why ADHD can get missed). I always felt there was something a bit ‘different' about how my brain worked - but like many people - I associated ADHD with hyperactive teenage boys, so never imagined I could have it. Then I stumbled across an article about women and ADHD and thought…'oh my God, that's ME.' I spent the next year or so reading and researching, which is what, eventually, led to me getting tested and getting a diagnosis. More about Kinsey: I am a registered nurse, women’s health, hormone and fertility coach, birth and postpartum doula, wife, girl who goes crazy for matcha, chicken mom, cat mom, goat mom, pig mom and dog mom. I wear a lot of hats! My husband and I are midwest homesteaders based in Springfield, MO and thrive in natural holistic living. I haven’t always been all those things, though. The one thing I have always been is wildly passionate about women and helping them as they walk that journey in whatever capacity fits them best. I AM ALL ABOUT G I R L P O W E R. So I guess it was fitting I ended up here. I remember stepping onto my postpartum floor as a new graduate nurse knowing I had made an amazing decision for my future. Little did I know, I would fall in love with hormones, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Even more so, I was unaware of how many women wanted and deserved more from their birth and postpartum experience. They desired freedom, knowledge, support, love, a helping hand, a confident “you can do this.” and to know they had C H O I C E S. From years of experience as a nurse working in postpartum, OB-GYN, holistic health, pediatrics, neonatal ICU, I dug deeper into that knowledge. When we journeyed through our own personal experiences starting a family and I was in the shoes of a patient, I wrote a list of all the things I wish I had asked, things I did not even know to ask, sincere words I wish had been said to me, along with support and resources that would have been helpful to have had. Those experiences shaped me into an empathetic listener, compassionate supporter and firm believer in making decisions that are best for your wants, needs and family without fear or judgement. While I LOVE being a nurse, I started to crave deeper relationships with my patients and their families. I wanted to play a different role in their unique journeys, I wanted to walk with them for more than a twelve hour shift. Most of all, I want to remind mamas how important they are. Quick note about today’s show. If you listened last week, you know that this week I’m talking to Chrissy King. She is a powerlifter, fitness/nutrition coach, and writer, but that is not the whole topic of discussion today. After the events in Charlottesville, VA in August of 2017, Chrissy wrote a powerful blog post about why social justice issues DO belong in the fitness/wellness conversation. After reading her post, I decided to invite her on to continue the conversation that her post started. We talk a lot about how to train and what to eat on this show, but we also speak often to total well-being. This includes stress management, mindset, overcoming challenges, changing your perspective, relating to others, and finding strength within oneself. This is what we’re talking about today. I understand that this may feel like a way too political conversation for a ‘paleo’ show. I get it. I acknowledge that we may have very different views and some of you may feel defensive, upset, or even find this conversation offensive. In that case, go ahead and skip the show. I ask that you try to open your mind, heart, and ears in an effort to get uncomfortable for the sake of growth. Part 2 of our listener question episode. We’re talking about a lot this week, so here are some terms that you may want to be familiar with: Macros – Refers to macronutrients (Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats). Macro-plans provide people with a set level in grams of each macronutrient to eat each day. Collagen – Collagen helps make up the structure of skin, bone, cartilage and muscle. It  is made by our body throughout our lifetimes, with the purpose of helping tissues be more elastic and withstand stretching. We used to eat more collagen in our food (bone broths, bone marrow, stews that cooked forever), but these days it’s less common in our daily diet. When we were posed with a question about counting macros and how that relates to recovering from an eating disorder, I decided that our listeners would be better served by my calling in someone with more specific experience on the topic. So I called someone who doesn’t only focus on motivation, mindset and athletics, but studied the psychology of eating which deals with who we are instead of just what we eat. I met Melissa Hemphill at the BirthFIT Coaches Seminar in Venice, CA. As the Regional Director at BirthFIT Colorado , Melissa was speaking at the seminar, covering the mind/nutrition section of the work. A few things that she talked about in regards to how our psychology impacts not only how we view food, but the success with which we’re able to set and achieve our health and fitness goals. When this question came through, I knew that she was who I wanted to call in. Melissa Hemphill graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2011 and is currently a Captain in the US Air Force based out of Colorado. She has a M.S. in Biology, an Eating Psychology Coach certification, and a few CrossFit, weightlifting, and prenatal yoga certifications.
