Andy Petranek is a remarkable man. He is a United States Marine, the oldest CrossFit games qualifier, and a performance coach. He founded Crossfit LA in 2004, where I met him. He became one of the more positive influences on me at the time and since. Two weeks ago, after celebrating 20 years of sobriety, he sent me an incredibly touching message, which is why we decided to do this podcast. We dive into self-compassion, honesty, accountability, and balancing the spiritual abstract with the harshest aspects of mundane reality. Please check this man out at https://andypetranek.com and on his socials https://www.facebook.com/andypetranek https://www.instagram.com/andypetranek/ Do me a favor and like/subscribe so I can be happy. Andy Petranek and Michael Stanwyck know fitness. Petranek was a former adventure racer and RedBull Athlete before founding one of the first CrossFit gyms. Soon after, Stanwyck walked in looking for a new type of workout and quickly became CrossFit LA’s manager. But while their classes made gym members stronger, the pair longed to have a more holistic impact on their clients. In 2011, they created the Whole Life Challenge, a six-week program that focuses on seven lifestyle changes that optimize well-being. The Challenge, which turns healthy living into a game, now attracts more than 50,000 participants a year. Last week, Petranek and Stanwyck sat down with Outside editor Chris Keyes to discuss the problem with diets, the keys to changing habits, the power of crowds, and how small lifestyle changes add up to make a big difference.

You ever think about how much you use your hands when you train? Think about it. When you are using a barbell, a kettlebell, the pull up rig, or a pair of rings, your grip strength is playing a huge role in your strength, how long you can perform the movement, and the level of movement capacity you have. More importantly, it is typically the first thing to give out. In this week's show, we caught up with Andy Galpin and Kenny Kane at CrossFit LA to talk about how you can step up your game when it comes to grip strength. We dive into wrist mobility, gymnastics drills, and why you need to be training your grip in different positions. Example: the 2015 CrossFit Games Pegboard challenge. Some of the strongest athletes in the world are throwing massive weight overhead, doing gnarly metcons, and performing kipping pullups for days ...but as soon as they are required to turn their hand position 90 degrees, their grip strength goes to shit. You can bet that the games athletes who fell apart in that event are going to be spending some time training their grip strength. You should too, and a great place to start is with this episode. Enjoy the show, Mike
Today Jared and Alex go Behind the Podium with Kenny Kane – a coach, comedian, podcaster, hip-hop dancer, martial artist, fellow SEALFIT KOKORO graduate, father, business owner, and ambassador of the pursuit of mastery. Kenny owns and coaches at CrossFit LA—The School of Mastery–in Santa Monica, CA, and is the founder of the positivity project, and The Mastery Method, formerly known as Context Coaching. Early adopters should be familiar with The Mastery Method, programming that intentionally differentiates between practice days, competition days, and mental toughness days, from our first guest episode with Matt Cipolla, who works with Kenny at CrossFit LA. We cover: Breakthrough can lead to breakdown – but at what cost? How the time is over to compartmentalize your fitness practices. Why intention is most important when you are coaching. The most important question to ask your clients. How bringing people together to improve their quality of life and build human connections is the most important piece of any business.
