Full Plate: Ditch diet culture, respect your body, and set boundaries.
Chrissy King is BACK for her second round on the pod. This time, we're diving deep into the intricate ways diet culture, body autonomy, dating culture, and yes, even childless cat ladies, are all connected. I promise there's a through-line here—and it's more liberating than any “hot girl summer” meme you've ever scrolled past. Some of the things we chat about... What is on Chrissy's Plate How she is accepting rest as a part of achievement How we can think of rest as a privilege and as freedom Childless cat ladies and being child-free by choice The parallels between dating culture and diet culture What Chrissy means when she says she is decentering men in her life The choice to not have children Why chasing men is like chasing thinness Breaking free of rules for how to live as a "good" woman Liberation beyond the body How to know what we want and choose that No longer organizing our life around our appearance Reclaiming time and energy from chasing what isn't meant for us And so much more! Send us a Text Message.Have you heard the term 'Hot Girl Summer'? Yes, thank you diet culture for once again making a season all about women's bodies, and making us feel that we are somehow wrong and need to change!* In response to the surge in popularity of "weight loss" drugs such as Ozempic, some influencers have taken it upon themselves to let us know that we DON'T need to partake in these drugs because if we just walk 15,000 -20,000 steps per day, we will achieve the same result - once again conflating exercise with weight loss.We have several problems with this advice. Why should we be chasing thinness? Can movement not just left alone? Can we not walk because it blows the cobwebs away, and we get a chance to connect to nature? Can we not move because it's good for our physical and mental health and brings us joy?Why does the end result of movement need to be shrinking our bodies when we know that exercise alone is not an effective weight loss tool? Movement holds numerous benefits which have NOTHING to do with weight loss! And weight loss is not a behaviour. So if you want to FEEL better in your body this summer, focus on the things that make you feel good. Movement, that brings you joy. Food that nourishes your body and is satisfying. Fostering friendships and feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin.Your body is not the problem.*(Inspiration for this episode came from the wonderful Chrissy King. Please follow her on Instagram. ) Are you feeling stuck in the 'earn and burn' cycle with your exercise routine, or as summer approaches, are you feeling self-conscious about wearing a swimsuit on the beach? Maybe you just want to stop worrying so much about food or how your body looks. You are not alone and your body is NOT the problem Please reach out if you would like some support. March 8th is International Womans Day 2024! As we celebrate International Women's Day and Women's History Month under the banner of "Inspire Inclusion," we promise you'll be moved by the remarkable stories that are defining women's empowerment today. We're delving into the power of influential literature, like Michelle Obama's "The Light We Carry" and Chrissy King's "The Body Liberation Project," and discussing the impactful ways in which International Women's Day galvanizes unity and progress for women around the world. And have you ever wondered how a box of Girl Scout cookies could represent a giant leap for womankind? We discuss this on the podcast too. The path to the top is steep, especially for women in leadership, and the view from above reveals a landscape still lacking in diversity. This episode pulls back the curtain on the stark underrepresentation of women in the highest corporate roles, and I'll share how mentorship turned my own aspirations into achievements. We're laying out practical steps and initiatives—such as mentorship programs, workshops, and advocacy campaigns—that promise to elevate women's voices and dismantle the barriers that have kept too many from reaching their potential. Our journey through this month's theme we discuss the inspiring women who have guested on the show who are changing the game across many different aspects of midlife. You'll hear about Elizabeth White's innovative CoLiving solutions for older women, Susan Salinger's expertise on women in healthcare, and the transformative role of women in sustainable agriculture and sports and dance with Julia Adam. These stories not only highlight the strides we've made but also serve as a call to support fundamental causes like Take Your Daughters to Work Day and We The Women by Julie Suk about the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, underscoring our collective responsibility to champion women's equality every single day.ObsessionsTish: Find Girl Scout Cookies https://www.girlscouts.org/en/cookies/how-to-buy-cookies.htmlEllen: shares three great books to celebrate womens history month and IWD The Light We Carry - Michelle Obama Chrissy King The Body Liberation Project We The Women by Julie Suk Give us a review... Chrissy is an author, a speaker, and an educator. In our conversation, we talk about the many tentacles of white supremacy, including the ways in which we ourselves have clung to our proximity to privilege. Chrissy helps us understand how diet culture is inherently racist and how the body positivity movement was co-opted by the mainstream from Black women. We also dissect the white feminism of the Barbie movie. The timing of this episode feels like kismet — both because it is the beginning of Black History Month and also because we have recently watched white feminists who have been silent on genocide get very loud about the white women in the film who did not receive Oscar nominations. If you're not sure what white feminism is, how it upholds white supremacy, or why the Barbie movie is problematic in this regard, you'll learn so much from listening to Chrissy in this episode. She has such a special ability to talk about these serious issues in a joyful and hopeful way. Chrissy's IG @iamchrissyking Chrissy's website chrissyking.com Leah's IG @leahsoojinkim

Episode Notes It's the start of a new year, and unsurprisingly one of the most reported New Year Resolutions is fitness-related. According to a survey from Forbes Health/One Poll, respondents most frequently cited improved fitness as a goal. Every day we are bombarded with messaging from media, advertisers, friends, and family about what our bodies should look like and how we can take control of our bodies. Many of these messages are inaccurate and harmful, but how can we break free especially during the New Year when ads for new gym memberships seem to be everywhere? And, what is at the root of all of this focus on body management? Today I'm joined by Chrissy King, author of The Body Liberation Project: How Understanding Racism and Diet Culture Helps Cultivate Joy and Build Collective Freedom. We discuss how we can detach from society's obsession with controlling our bodies and not just for our own personal well-being but as a component of collective liberation. If you've ever found yourself hating your body, believing that losing a few more pounds would lead to happiness, or frustrated that you can't attain the latest body goals, then this is the conversation you've been waiting for. ** ** Chrissy King is a writer, speaker, strength coach, and educator with a passion for creating a diverse and inclusive wellness industry. Not just her body, but also her voice. Considering the unrealistic beauty standards that were being set as the precedent, she viewed the gym as a “fix” for her body. But once she lost the weight, happiness did not immediately follow. Instead, she shifted her mindset to ask, “How am I cultivating a life that feels joyous and not directly related to my body?”Chrissy released a book earlier this year about body liberation, which discusses the origin of body positivity and some of its misconceptions. Her work focuses on cultivating a diverse environment so that every person feels a sense of belonging. In today's episode (and in her book), she recognizes that none of us are free until all of us are free. Chrissy's overarching message today is clear: you can find joy outside of your body.Learn more about The Scooty Fund's work at https://www.scootyfund.org/ & learn more about Chrissy's work at https://chrissyking.com/Please consider supporting our work by donating.Follow The Scooty Fund:InstagramTwitterLinkedInFollow Chrissy:InstagramTwitterFacebookChrissy's book: The Body Liberation Project

Chrissy King spent nearly a decade of her life yo-yo dieting and being consumed by her weight, equating her worth with her appearance. But when Chrissy finally reached her smallest size and strongest body, she was the most miserable she had ever been as an adult. And with this, The Body Liberation Project was born. Taking back control of the narrative around our bodies, tune in as Chrissy and your Triggered hosts share their experiences with body image, self-worth, and how you can become so liberated in your body that it becomes a force for good. KEY POINTS: - How the Eurocentric standard of beauty has affected the way we see ourselves - The rise of diet culture and the quick-fix mentality - Why we need to be mindful and curate our social media following - Steps to repair our sense of self-worth - What inspired The Body Liberation movement? - Is size a real metric of health? QUOTABLES: “Body image is not a one-time situation. It's something that is a lifelong journey, especially because we're going to keep getting these messages that tell us something is wrong with us.” -Chrissy King “If we are deriving our worthiness simply on how we look, it's impossible to feel worthy because this physical vessel is just the thing that's allowing us to have a human experience. And this vessel is going to change, regardless if we want it to or not.” -Chrissy King GUEST RESOURCES: Chrissy King Chrissyking.com IG | instagram.com/iamchrissyking FB | facebook.com/ChrissyKingFitness Twitter | twitter.com/iamchrissyking PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: For more info, visit their website: triggeredafpodcast.com Like what you're hearing? ICYMI, last month the New York Post published an article claiming that the worst fashion trend of the 1990s & 2000s was making a comeback - heroin chic. If you lived through this the first time, you probably recall how damaging & shaming this trend was, and you might have felt more than a little traumatized by seeing this headline pop up. So this week, we're breaking down all the reasons why we're never going back to heroin chic. We're talking about our own experiences of this trend the first time around; how beauty trends are used as distractions, and who benefits from those distractions; why these trends are political and disproportionately harm folks who are already politically and socially marginalized; and how we, as consumers, can learn to think critically about body types being sold to us as trends.Want to learn more about Intuitive Eating?
