My guest for my 100th episode is a human that I hold very close to my heart- a human who, if not for his very existence, my life would not be as it is today. I started following Andy Petranek during my first Whole Life Challenge, as he was the co-founder, and posted a lot of content I found motivational.By the next year, I knew with 100% certainty that meeting him was part of my path forward. He was far from me geographically and had no idea who I was, but it was like there was an other-worldly force pulling me in his direction. After we finally connected in early 2020, it began to reveal itself that the path I was walking, and the path Andy was walking, were destined to overlap in divine timing. We were both deepening our consciousness and our conversations began to reflect that.I have learned so much within those conversations. From the very first one, Andy awakened in me an aliveness that I hadn't felt in over a decade, a connection with myself so deep it is almost too sacred to mention.I think that's why, for the longest time, I couldn't bring myself to share him with the world on my podcast.Andy's my complete opposite and one of my dearest friends. He's a phenomenal Dad, a loving husband, and a source of love, joy, and compassion for so many. He has the memory of a goldfish and the best laugh on the planet. If you've met Andy, you know that there's a brilliant light that shines through him. When he holds space, his heart is as open as the sky. This podcast isn't an “interview” as much as it's a conversation between two very good friends about some very powerful stuff. I invite you to come and experience it. It's far out, just like we are. Thanks, Andy, for being on my 100th episode. I couldn't have gotten here without you. ❤️Find Andy at andypetranek.com, or on all socials: @andypetranek✨GTFO Notes: The Sober Series has moved to begin on Dec 14 at 7:00 p.m. It is not too late to register. We live in society that rewards having. Having a nice house, a fancy car, an important job title, a college degree, a fit body. And there's nothing wrong with any of those things. I have or have had all those things. But where we run into trouble is when we allow having these things to define who we are. In other words - when our internal value is derived from having these external things. We feel we need to have these things in order to be worthy – to be enough. So we often do – or act – from a place of unworthiness in order to get these things so that we – and others – will consider us to be worthy. But what if we flip that script? What if we start from a place of being worthy – of being enough, and THEN do the work for the things we desire from a place of self-compassion. What if you, as a spiritual entity, already are – and always have been – enough? My guest today is Andy Petranek. Andy has a fascinating story. He was a musical prodigy as a child, then went on to join the Marines, ran eco-challenges and eventually became a Red Bull sponsored adventure racing athlete, was a CrossFit Games athlete, opened and one of the most successful CrossFit gyms in the world, and co-founded the Whole Life Challenge. He was on top of the world – he had accomplished so much. But all of that came suddenly and unexpectantly crashing down when he became paralyzed by anxiety and severe panic attacks. What happened? How did this former Marine, CrossFit Athlete, sponsored adventure racer end up here? While that's a fascinating part of this story – it's not near as compelling as what came next.Join us this week as Andy shares his incredible story – his rise and his fall – and how he rebuilt and reimagined himself to become a professional life, leadership, and performance coach who helps people create greater levels of confidence, joy, fulfillment, and meaning in their lives. Has your memory of things past and the negativity that stuck with it failed you? Does it seem like nothing is making traction, and you are all the more stuck where you are? You may be allowing past failures to define you, and it has limited you to a certain extent to discourage you from taking the next step to reach your goal. Have you taken a look at what you do to yourself when things don't go well midstream when reaching for those goals? How do you make yourself be pulled towards your vision and goal consistently? Andy Petranek is a professional life, leadership, and performance coach who's been helping people create greater levels of confidence, joy, fulfillment, and success in their lives for over 25 years. He is a veteran of multiple overseas deployments, including Operation Desert Storm, Andy is a former United States Marine who served for four years as a combat engineer and small unit commander. Also, he is a Red Bull sponsored athlete in the sport of adventure racing, he captained teams and navigated courses all over the world in races like the Eco-Challenge and Raid Gauloises; in 2009 he became the oldest competitor to qualify for and compete in the CrossFit Games He was an early adopter of CrossFit starting one of the first and most successful affiliate gyms in the world in 2004, CrossFit Los Angeles. He launched a successful consulting business and taught hundreds of other CrossFit Affiliate gym owners his gym management success strategies and systems. He also co-founded the Whole Life Challenge, a global, online health and wellness game that has had over 200,000 people participate over its 9-year history. He holds a master's degree in spiritual psychology. He has been the beneficiary of decades of personal self-exploration, discovery, and expansion through his work with coaches, healers, guides, and teachers. In this episode, Andy shares how to live your life free from your very own critic, forgiving and loving yourself, becoming more self-aware of who you are so you move past whatever is hindering you from getting success. He also talks about starting from a clean slate free from your judgments of the past, so you reach your highest potential and serve your client better on a deeper level. He doubles down the importance of the language you use as words have a substantial impact on projecting how things should happen. And it's best to avoid words that create pressure and anxiety. Make things free-flowing, making them become just a way of life. "If you could just separate from all the stuff that has gotten in your way -- the belief systems, the structures, the cultural ways of being you've learned from your family, from your community, from your friends, and step into the version of you that you want to step into, based on what you want to create as a possibility, that's powerful. Because you're operating from a blank slate." - Andy Petranek What you will learn from this episode: 03:15 - His takeaways from his Marine Corp stint 10:15 - Stepping into a new operating system without fully taking out one's uniqueness 13:46 - How it's important to create a vision of how you want to be and seeing it demonstrated in real life 16:10 - Allowing yourself the flexibility to change gears midstream 18:18 - What do you do to yourself when you don't hit the goal? 21:37 - The full acceptance of yourself not worrying about whether you falter or not 26:16 - Self-acceptance as a ticket to personal freedom 34:12 - What's with the words 'have to' and 'want to' 36:49 - The behavior of a 'have to' person 38:53 - Important thoughts on 'choices' 44:05 - How important is self-awareness in starting your journey to self-acceptance 46:20 - The goal is not to get rid of your weaknesses but to see it, accept, and to master it 49:46 - Connecting with your clients on a much deeper level 56:02 - What happens when you operate in guilt, shame, and scarcity Connect with Andy Petranek: andypetranek.com Facebook Instagram Connect with Gavin McHale: maverickcoachingacademy.ca LinkedIn Instagram
Michael Stanwyck is the co-founder of The Whole Life Challenge, an idea that developed during his seven years as a coach and gym manager at CrossFit Los Angeles. He graduated from UCLA with a BA in philosophy as well as a degree from the Southern California School of Culinary Arts, and feels food is one of the most important parts of a life - it can nourish, heal, and bring people together. Michael believes health and well-being are as much a state of mind as they are a state of the body, and when it comes to fitness, food, and life in general, he thinks slow is often much better than fast. Stopping regularly to examine things is the surest way to put down roots and grow. He knows he will never be done with his own work, and believes the best thing you can do for your well-being starts with working from where you are right now. Self-described as “a self-improvement junkie, a nut-job, an early adopter, a tinkerer, a quick-start, and a life-explorer,” Andy Petranek is also the creator of the Whole Life Challenge, a life coach, an avid outdoorsman, and a lifelong devotee to the pursuit of growth and knowledge. His leadership experience as a Marine equipped him with the skills that brought him success as one of the first CrossFit affiliate owners, and his focus on improving the lives of the “normal” people in his community led him to develop the Whole Life Challenge. To this day, his mission is to “help clients stay committed to making better choices each day, outside of the gym, where it really matters, in their everyday lives.”Andy joins me for a chat about the apps that improve our lives, unusual sleeping practices, the reason a lack of motivation is keeping people stuck in unhealthy patterns, and the benefits of isometric movement. We explore the connection between mouth-breathing and respiratory rate, look at strategies for longevity, and discuss both the foundational methodology of CrossFit and our thoughts on where the brand is headed. I couldn’t have the founder of the Whole Life Challenge on the show without talking about the Whole Life Challenge, of course—so we dive into what it is, why everyone should do it, and what the best starting place is. Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify For Thad Beaty, musician-turned-triathlete, “Music That Moves” is the literal summation of his incredible journey thus far. A guitarist who has spent 9 years with country juggernaut Sugarland, he has shared stages with Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Rhianna, and Beyoncé as well as contributing as a writer on albums selling upwards of 10 million copies. After his mother’s diagnosis with colon cancer and his own realization that the rock and roll lifestyle had resulted in his own poor health, he set out on a new journey to reclaim his health, the health of his family, and now, a quickly growing community of triathletes all over the world. Music That Moves was born out of Thad’s journey back to health in all areas of his life. Through the medium of a plant-based diet combined with a goal to compete in an IRONMAN, Thad found himself over 70 pounds lighter and surrounded by fellow athletes and musicians who wanted his help with their own journeys. Never one to do anything halfway, he dove in head first and pursued multiple coaching certifications (USA Triathlon Level 2, USAC Level 2, Training Peaks Level 2, USMS Level 2, Newton Running, Dynamic Movement Assessment,TRX, Spartan SGX, Triathlon Research, and Scheduled to sit for his Nutritionist certification and NSCA CSCS) to better coach the athletes he is leading. After discovering his passion to affect people’s lives for positive change, Thad was asked to be a celebrity mentor on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Weight-loss Edition, helping to coach and train a participant to complete the New Zealand Half-Ironman. From Andy: Thad is one of the most down-to-earth real rock stars that I've ever spoken with. His willingness to get real and raw and share some of the realities of his life made the conversation light, fun, entertaining, and enlightening. He's got a serious passion for helping others change their lives in a similar way to the way he's changed his. You're going to LOVE this one! Enjoy! Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Mark Sisson is founder of Primal Nutrition, LLC and Primal Kitchen, LLC, New York Times Bestselling Author, health and wellness revolutionary, and founder of Mark’s Daily Apple, the #1-ranked blog for over a decade in its health and fitness category. He is also wrote The Primal Blueprint, which was credited with turbocharging the growth of the primal/paleo movement back in 2009. Prior to his life as a health and wellness educator and leader, Mark was a gifted runner and triathlete. In 1980, he qualified for the US Olympic Trials, and earned a 4th place finish in the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. The inhuman amount of training and weekly racing those results required was taking its toll, though. Mark found himself constantly sick or injured. That pushed him to explore nutrition and supplementation as a way to enhance his performance, to support his damaged body, and to bolster his immune system. Mark retired from competition in 1988 and decided to do whatever he could to help others avoid making the kinds of health mistakes that he had made. Mark uses his pre-medical background, degree in biology, and an intense desire to unlock the health secrets that he knew were out there—answers to questions about health, wellness, anti-aging, safe weight-loss, nutrition and supplementation—to find the natural ways of achieving good health for himself and others. FROM ANDY: I'm always stoked to have a recorded conversation with Mark. He and I have been friends for many years, and I always learn something new each time I talk to him. This time was no exception. In fact, in this podcast, we were able to cover topics about each of the WLC's 7 Daily Habits. You'll want to take notes during this one for sure! Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Paul Greive is making a difference. He's the co-founder and CEO of PastureBird - the country's largest supplier of REAL pasture raised, free-range chicken in the Country. And what do I mean by real? Well, "pasture raised", when you see it on packaging in the market, doesn't mean what you think it does. Here's his story: When Paul got out of the military in 2011 and became a Certified Public Accountant, he decided to do something about his aching joints, arthritis, and constant Motrin use. He'd heard the hype about Paleo but never committed to trying it out. He finally gave it a go and after two weeks he says he felt like a kid again. He could breathe through his nose, his joint pain was gone, energy levels were up, and his sleep returned to normal. His wife and her whole family even jumped on board. People were losing weight, feeling better, and just overall healthier and happier. They were working hard to find good, clean foods and spending a lot of extra money on fancy labels like "grass fed", "free range", "organic", and "antibiotic free". The problem was, the more he learned about labels the more he found that they were complete BS. Free Range chickens never actually went outside, and "Antibiotic Free" birds actually got a bunch of antibiotics. Oh, and organic, that just dealt with a single certification for the feed. Wait, what? He felt cheated, misled, and lied to. Then, in April of 2012, the family sat around together over Easter, joking around about getting some chickens for the backyard. Nobody had any type of a farming or livestock background, so Paul thought it was just a big joke. But sure enough, his brother in law Rob disappeared from the room for about 5 minutes and returned with a big grin on his face. "Guys, I just ordered 50 chicks and they'll be here in 2 weeks" Rob said. From Andy: The more I learned about Paul's story, the more disturbed I became about the quality of the food that's on my family's dinner table. Do the chicken and eggs we spend good money on based on their labels actually meet the standards that a "reasonable person" would expect from the words "free range" and "pasture raised"? Tracy has been at the forefront of a number of the sports’ innovations and advances over the past 40 years, including the1974 effort to introduce and involve chiropractic in track & field, in 1980 when he initiated the first test case with prize money and above-the-table appearance money in long distance running, and more recently in 2005, he created the first Wave Start plans for marathons and half marathons to better manage the density and comfort of runners on the course. Tracy's actions, events, and programs have always epitomized his core belief that sport should positively impact all of society and look to include as opposed to exclude, involving all constituencies and athletes of all ages and abilities. His recent accolades include induction into the Running USA Hall of Champions and being named head manager of the United States Men’s Track & Field Team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro Tracy now runs Everything Running, a small consulting company focused on “anything and everything track and field, running, and race walking." From Andy: It's rare these days that you get a chance to sit down and hear stories from a true legend, leader, and innovator in a modern sport. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to do just this with Tracy Sundlun. His stories are mesmerizing, as he takes me back to times in the running world when things that we take for granted today were totally non-existent. To chronicle his journey back from the dead to a place of truly living, Josh wrote his #1 best-selling book, The Beauty of a Darker Soul. The book carries a universal message about trauma that empowers people to transcend through their most challenging experiences. Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Kevin Carter is a 14-Year NFL veteran, Super Bowl Champion, Sports Broadcaster, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist. He recently hosted the highest rated college gameday show on ESPNU - The Experts and College Game Day. With four stellar seasons in the NFL, Carter turned his fifth season with the Rams into the best of his career. In 1999 he led the NFL in sacks with 17, earning him Pro Bowl, All-Pro, and All-Madden honors. Carter accomplished his ultimate goal as an NFL player that same year. With his help, the St. Louis Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, earning the team its only Super Bowl title in team history. Not only did Kevin make plays on the field, but off the field as well with vast community endeavors through The Kevin Carter Foundation, which he began in 2002. He was voted by his Titans’ teammates as the Community Man of the Year during three of the four seasons he spent with the team. Throughout his career, Carter fell in love with philanthropy and giving back to the community. In 2002 he began a unique celebrity charity event in Nashville entitled Waiting for Wishes Celebrity Waiters Dinner, where celebrities join him to wait tables for patrons. April 2018 marked the 17th Anniversary for the event, which has raised over $2.2 million for The Kevin Carter Foundation and Make- A-Wish Middle Tennessee. Looking back on his career, Carter says what he is most proud of is the work he has been able to do in the community, raising millions of dollars for various causes through his foundation. FROM ANDY: I was touched, moved, and inspired by Kevin's commitment to helping others, especially after watching the video on his website here, and felt compelled to have him on as a guest. While yes, Kevin was a pro football player, which is interesting in and of itself, his work today is focused on supporting his wife and son, and in helping others gain access to many of the opportunities he's had in his life. In short, he's using his celebrity for doing good and helping others. That's the focus of our podcast conversation. This one was more like a close conversation with a good friend than it was an interview, as Kevin opens up the things that challenge him in his life today and how he's setting himself up for the future. Episode Notes — 147: Kevin Carter Kevin’s philanthropy work: How the measure of a man is not what happens on the field, but what happens once the lights turn off. Kevin’s childhood… it’s not anything like what you would think: Coke-bottle glasses, plump, speech impediment, emotional, a dreamer, and band-geek. His mom’s powerful influence on the context of his life and being a hero. As a kid, he committed to always standing up for the underdog, the underpriviledged. Kevin tried out for his junior varsity football and basketball teams his freshman year of high school - didn’t make either. While his older brother was smart, strong, good looking, and the super athlete. He had a massive growth spurt between freshman and sophomore years and everything changed on the outside. Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Charles Mayfield, both an early adopter and leader in the paleo nutrition world, got started down this road based on personal desire to put the best, healthiest, and nutritious food on the table for himself and his family. His intention recently expanded from that to now include being responsible for raising healthy livestock and taking care of our land, making it sustainable and renewable for years and generations to come. Charles is the co-author of one of the first cookbooks ever written for paleo recipes, is the co-founder of Atlanta Strength and Conditioning, and is the owner of his own farm, Mayfield Pastures, primarily for providing pastured poultry, pork and beef for his family while building the size and infrastructure to expand his operation and offerings to his local community. Charles is also an avid hunter, gardener, distiller, and BJJ enthusiast. This was a particularly fun interview for me as Charles and I connect on so many things at so many levels. He was an early adopter of CrossFit, he attended the CrossFit Games in 2009, the one in which I competed, he was friends with Robb Wolf before Robb was a known figure, and he co-wrote one of my favorite of all time paleo cookbooks! When I met him at Paleo FX, I was amazed that we hadn't spent more time getting to know one another prior to that time. Charles' farm adventure is incredibly inspiring, considering the fact that he's only been at it for 2 years. After reading and studying the likes of Joel Salatin and regenerative farming, he decided to take action (many of us never get to this part... thinking about an idea for years before doing anything to move forward.) Moving his family from Atlanta to rural Tennessee, he built a regenerative farm with chickens, pigs and cows, and his entire family is reaping the rewards of it today. Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Paul Chek is a holistic health practitioner, a.k.a. "a healer." He developed a knack for it quite by accident about 30 years ago, when his teammates on the US Army boxing team found that they felt better and healed faster after having him work on them. He went on to study healing arts for the majority of two decades all over the world. He didn't leave a stone unturned, learning from as many different types of healers possible, in as many different modalities. As a result, he developed an innate capacity to heal others - especially when traditional methods didn't work. He's also known for having been largely responsible for first introducing the Swiss Ball to the world as an exercise tool for rehab, corrective exercise, and training. In an effort to reach more people with his vast knowledge base and experience, he founded the CHEK Institute where he teaches his methods and philosophies to health practitioners from all over the world. His programs and approach, addressing the foundational root causes of a problem, have literally changed the lives of thousands of his clients, his students, and their clients. Paul is currently a sought-after international presenter and consultant for companies like the Chicago Bulls, Australia’s Canberra Raiders, and the US Air Force Academy. He has also produced over 60 DVDs and 17 advanced-level home study courses and has had articles featured in Wall Street Journal, Men’s Health, Glamour magazine as well as TV and radio. His book, The Golf Biomechanics Manual and course are PGA-approved, and have been adopted for use by professional golf schools, as well as featured on the Golf Channel. Paul is a registered Native American Spirit Guide and Medicine Man with the Nemenhah Band (people of the truth) and Native American Traditional Organization (NAC) where he initiates a process of awakening comprehensive healing through sacred ceremony. From Andy: This was an especially meaningful conversation for me as Paul was one of my first mentors in the fitness industry (I went through many of his correspondence courses and three of his certifications). Paul's ability to assess disease states down into their foundational elements, and then to create a healing program addressing them is one of his truly great gifts, as his willingness to teach it to thousands of practitioners around the world. His contribution to the world of health and healing is massive. I especially loved the part of this podcast where we talk about how he's boiled down everyone's everyday health to what he calls "The Last 4 Doctors You'll Ever Need" - Dr. Happiness, Dr. Movement, Dr. Quiet, and Dr. Diet. From Andy: Katie in one word - "amazing". She has intentionally set up her life (and her family's life) to be in alignment with who she is and what she values. To do that, she's had to make some really significant changes and sacrifices, and it hasn't always been comfortable or easy, but she and her family and kids are already starting to reap the rewards of her efforts. Her story is a reminder to me of the importance of aligning our lives and our actions with what we truly value. This week: a conversation about our experience with the Whole Life Challenge. This was the first time that Zachary and Lesley participated in the challenge together; we discussed our experience as individuals, and of course, doing it together as a partnership.

Since 2015 Megan has been hosting and producing shows on TWiT (This Week in Tech), Leo Laporte’s technology network. She currently hosts iOS Today (a show about how to use your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV) and Tech News Weekly (a show that keeps you up-to-date on all the tech news that matters.) She co-hosts Know How (a maker show), Triangulation (a longform interview show), and The New Screen Savers (a tech variety show). She also covers live tech events and product announcements. From Andy: This was a really special conversation for me. I have been a HUGE fan of Leo Laporte and Megan Morrone for many years. Leo has had a radio show called “The Tech Guy” (who is Leo) on KFI in Los Angeles on Saturdays for almost 20 years that I’ve listened to on and off since it’s inception. And I’ve known Megan as his counterpoint on TWiT TV (This Week in Tech). When I saw via Twitter that Megan was reviewing our WLC App on TWiT TV, I almost fell over! By the way – the review is as fantastic as it is hilarious – you can watch it here. After watching the review, I started up a conversation with Megan on Twitter – when she asked me if she could come on the podcast to talk about tech, health, and fitness! Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Jimmy Rosenberg was looking for a way to make some dough in the summer of 1983. He got this idea…sell juice on the beach. So he got some fruit, blended it in his kitchen, and started selling the juice by the cup (poured from a jug) on the beach in Santa Monica. Little did he know that inauspicious start would lead to the formation of two mega juice companies – Naked Juice and Evolution Fresh. His first attempt, a pretty impressive first attempt by the way, was a company called The Naked Juice Company. After growing it to a size that allowed him to serve most of California, he sold it and got out of the juice business entirely. But not for long. Two years later, with a renewed commitment to delivering the highest quality juice possible to consumers, he started Evolution Fresh. He steered this company for 19 years before being acquired by Starbucks in 2011. Before I sat down with Jimmy, I didn’t tell him that I’d be asking him for photos and a bio, or that I’d be posting his story about this podcast on social media. He’s a very private person. He’s never been on social media and has never shared these incredible stories about the two companies he’s championed. Fortunately for us all, and in spite of this, he agreed to proceed. I’m incredibly grateful for his willingness to share his story, and trust me, you will be too! Fortunately for us all, and in spite of this, he agreed to proceed. I’m incredibly grateful for his willingness to share his story, and trust me, you will be too! The thing I relate to most about Jimmy – he’s just an ordinary guy like you and me. But for some reason, he was willing to listen, to experiment, to put in the hard work, to be open to learning on the job, and to be steadfast in his commitment to never sacrifice the quality of his product. These have all be part of his journey, all part of the reason he’s been so successful, twice! Listen. Love. Learn. This story has it all. Enjoy! Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Dr. Jeremy Brook, aka “The Spinechecker,” is a Los Angeles-based chiropractor, yogi, and movement specialist. He is the founder of The Life Center Chiropractic, a unique healing oasis that incorporates the disciplines of chiropractic, spinal corrective protocols, yoga, and other movement art forms to make sure the spine, body, and mind are aligned. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Brook has been teaching an anthropological, evolutionary and energetic approach to anatomy and also teaches chiropractic adjusting seminars to Doctors of Chiropractic and students of chiropractic. When he’s not “spinechecking” and adjusting, he can be found on his yoga mat, lifting weights at Deuce Gym, and slacklining between palm trees on Venice Beach. From Andy: Dr. Brook (or Jeremy as I call him during the podcast) is my chiropractor. I went to him about 8 months ago thinking that chiropractic was the last thing I needed. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Through a regular practice of adjustments and full body exercises to address the hips, spine, shoulders, and neck, I’ve seen my spinal and full-body mobility take a dramatic turn for the better. Jeremy has an amazing way about him. Part doctor, part healer, part yogi, and part athlete, he’s able to bring a real-life, practical approach to his healing practice that is incredibly unique. He’s built a program and culture in his office that is strong, encouraging, and self-propagating. And in terms of chiropractic, he will challenge whatever preconceived notion you have of its purpose. He also lays down a solid foundation for its place in the world of health and well-being for all functional aspects of your body. Hope you love this conversation as much as I did! Enjoy! Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify How do you describe Ronnie Teasdale? Figuring out how to capture him in conversation and in writing, that’s the problem I ran into after spending a few hours with him recording the podcast. Ronnie grew up in Michigan playing hockey practically every day of his life until he was 23 years old. At the height of his hockey “career,” he was what I’d call an “enforcer” — the guy you’d put in to take out (by brute force) whatever player on the other team was scoring goals or causing problems. Sports, to him, were a zero-sum game. Someone wins, someone loses — and doing anything necessary to win was just part of the game. When he moved west to California, he did so to pursue a more holistic calling. With degrees in psychology and exercise science from Oakland University, Ronnie opened a gym, started studying yoga, and left his hockey and win at all costs mindset behind. Then he discovered CrossFit, the sport of fitness. Since he already knew how to win, this was a way to combine his prior-life mindset with his newfound passion for fitness. He opened a new gym called CrossFit Mean Streets, and became known in the world of CrossFit as a fierce competitor, bad boy, and also a super-fit human. But there was a side to Ronnie that no one really knew — a side that he talks about a lot in our conversation. His quest has always been to optimize human performance, and he has been able to achieve that since leaving hockey with quite unorthodox methods involving recovery, rejuvenation, and optimization rather than super hard or aggressive training. Ronnie now is finishing up his Kundalini Yoga teacher training, has just changed his name to his new spiritual name, Ravi Chander, and spends much of his time reading, studying, and developing expertise and personal experience in what he calls “humanology.” This is the longest podcast I’ve ever recorded, and it’s a conversation I enjoyed thoroughly. We get into “weird” stuff right out of the gate, though Ronnie is about as un-weird as it gets. It opened my eyes to many new intriguing concepts such as optimizing performance without training, as well sound healing and sunlight. Enjoy! When Maryann Berry was in her 20’s she suffered from chronic knee, hip and back pain. She ended up in a wheelchair, unable to walk due to excruciating hip pain. She had multiple surgeries and tried every medical treatment under the sun including injections, prescription drugs, chiropractic adjustments, and physical therapy. She was left broke, still in pain, and with seemingly no prospects for healing. Then she was introduced to Posture Alignment Therapy, a revolutionary exercise technique that treats the underlying cause of pain by correcting posture alignment. Maryann began following the program every single day. Over the course of roughly three years, putting in lots of work every day, Maryann went from being unable to walk to enjoying full range of motion and function of her hip, as well as eliminating her back and knee pain. Today, Maryann’s hip, back, and knee are fully recovered and 100% pain free. She feels like she got her life back. For complete show notes, please click here to visit our website. Now certified as a Posture Alignment Specialist, Maryann created Realign Therapy to teach others how to take responsibility for their own health. Maryann works with people online and in-person at her studio in San Diego, California as well as creating workout and mobility videos for players of the Whole Life Challenge. I really love Maryann's passion and enthusiasm for what she does and how simple some of the things are that you can do to positively affect your posture. Do yourself a favor and check out the 4 videos below and add these to rest breaks you take in front of your computer or desk. They will make a difference. Definitely check out our conversation for more insight, context, and inspiration.

His joy of writing and why he wants to share his experiences with others. Training with John Cena and what it has been like to work with him. Why his father introduced him to weight and strength training when he was just 13 years old. The secret sauce to becoming a CrossFit athlete without getting injured and burnt out. Why focusing on transitions between work and home can give us space and help us to deal with everything that's going on in our lives. What he's learned from going to the gym and what it continues to teach him about life. The importance of always showing up and being present in wellness and relationships. Why children deserve to be involved in health and wellness at an early age. How he's helping people program their life for better wellness through movement and personalized training. What we can do to be more mindful and present with everyone we come into contact with every day. Taking Breath, Balance, and Behavior and using them in programs to help people begin working on their breathing to help change those who are in pain. Power Quotes From The Show "Fitness goes well past the movements, tissues, and joints. It's about behavioral health, but how do we even begin creating good habits? A lot of people will get burned out because they think being fit means going all out every time they exercise." - Anders Varner "Even though I've been meditating for over three years, I still struggle with focusing on my breath. That's what makes me come back to it because it's such a skill to be able to slow down and be in the moment. The slower you breathe, the better you get at it and that in itself is a challenge." - Anders Varner "Meditating really helps to peel back the layers that allow you to uncover ultimate truths, what motivates you, where you want your life to go, and how to create your next path. You don't want to attach yourself to the next big thing that comes along or continue to be someone who is unhealthy. Work through some of your stories and then rebuild from there." - Anders Varner "When I opened my business, I lost all of my friends that I used to hang out with at the gym. I went from about 300 to 4 friends because I had to change. I had to move on from my old life and recreate everything about me. Everyone has that opportunity to change; you just have to be comfortable with your own growth and know that you have to keep going so that you can be authentic to yourself." - Anders Varner "Pain is a response that happens because something is not right. The brain doesn't have enough mechanisms to handle those dysfunctional movement patterns or inflammation so it sends the pain signal. Many people need a medical doctor, but most people just need to relax and get rid of all the negative energy in their lives. They need to slow down, unwind, and focus on their breathing as a way to heal." - Anders Varner Links From Today's Show: Anders Varner Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Yin Strength Training The Low Back Fix Facebook Twitter YouTube Movement Rx Facecbook Twitter Instagram YouTube The Performance Lifestyle by Anders Varner Warrior by Theresa Larson and Alan Eisenstock Science Agrees: Five Facts to Fix Your Lower Back Scaling and Modifying Workouts for Lower Back Pain San Diego Athletics Whole Life Challenge The Headspace App The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast The Life Extension Nutrition Center WFR 160 Petteri Lahtela of Oura Ring WFR 134 Dr. Andy Galpin WFR 105 Dr. John Sullivan About Anders Varner A San Diego-based movement specialist with more than twenty years of training and coaching experience, Anders Varner is the co-founder of The Low Back Fix. This is a particularly personal interview for me. Not the subject matter, but the broader context - the fact that the editor of Outside Magazine is on my podcast! You see, Outside Magazine has been my magazine "bible" since the early 1990's. It was THE place I turned for articles, inspiration, gear, adventure, and innovations. It was where I turned time and again for figuring out what to buy, where to go, and what sponsors to go after when looking for new gear for adventure racing. So when I found out that Outside Magazine, and in particular, the editor, Chris Keyes had contacted the Whole Life Challenge about participating in our event, I was floored. But wait, it got even cooler. Chris wanted ME (and Michael) to be on the Outside Magazine Podcast, and wanted us to come out to Santa Fe, NM to record it. So that's exactly what we did... and while there, I got Chris to hang out for a couple hours on Sunday to record this one. So... what do you talk about with the editor of a major magazine? Writing, journaling, apps, reading, how an article goes from birth to finished form, and of course, outdoor sports! Hope you enjoy this as much as I did! - Andy Petranek P.S. Andy Petranek and Michael Stanwyck know fitness. Petranek was a former adventure racer and RedBull Athlete before founding one of the first CrossFit gyms. Soon after, Stanwyck walked in looking for a new type of workout and quickly became CrossFit LA’s manager. But while their classes made gym members stronger, the pair longed to have a more holistic impact on their clients. In 2011, they created the Whole Life Challenge, a six-week program that focuses on seven lifestyle changes that optimize well-being. The Challenge, which turns healthy living into a game, now attracts more than 50,000 participants a year. Last week, Petranek and Stanwyck sat down with Outside editor Chris Keyes to discuss the problem with diets, the keys to changing habits, the power of crowds, and how small lifestyle changes add up to make a big difference.

“There is this misconception that we have that we can kick the can down the road in anything in our life that we’re not happy with. We can just wait ‘til tomorrow...these tomorrows may never come.” -Eric Remensperger We each have moments in our lives that forever shift our trajectory. Sometimes they are clearly positive - graduating from college or meeting our future spouse, for example. Other times, the positive side is hard to see, such as being diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. For Eric Remensperger, stage four prostate cancer was both life-shattering and an undeniable call to purpose, a call which he now devotes himself to answering. [Note: For the complete set of show notes, links, and contact info, head to https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast] Once a hard-drinking, hard-living New York City attorney, Eric knew that he couldn’t maintain that lifestyle and expect to live a long, healthy life. He started down the wellness road in the 90’s, making big changes in long-term habits to improve his well-being. He quit smoking entirely, moved to Los Angeles, began seeking out alternative medicine healers, acupuncturists, functional doctors who focused on wellness (rather than sickness). By 2010, his life looked radically different - he had become a person obviously committed to his own health and well-being. Imagine his surprise when in 2016, after twenty years of “clean living”, he found himself in a doctor’s office getting the news that his body was riddled with cancer. Through a treatment program of his own design and implementation, with diet as a key component and without the use of radiation or chemo, Eric’s cancer is now in remission. You don’t need to be fighting cancer to learn from Eric - if you are someone who hopes to live long and prosper, or you just enjoy being inspired, be sure to tune in for this special episode of the Whole Life Challenge podcast!

You may have seen this week’s guest on a random Saturday afternoon while watching the Olympics or an extreme sports show with guys hucking themselves off of 100-foot cliffs on mountain bikes. Sal Masekela has been hosting shows like this for NBC and Red Bull for many years, and is currently the persona of the Red Bull Signature Series. But I know Sal through his participation with our fitness community at CrossFit Los Angeles, of which he was a member for over 5 years, and subsequently, his journey as a four-time veteran of the Whole Life Challenge. Sal leads a pretty incredible life, traveling to all parts of the earth with some of the world’s greatest extreme athletes (surf, skate, snowboard, ski, dirt bike, mountain bike, etc.) in order to bring their exploits and amazing performances alive for the rest of us via TV. He also gets a chance to hang out with these guys outside of competition. During the podcast, he shares both stories and profound learnings from the likes of Laird Hamilton, Gabby Reece, and Kelly Slater (who he hangs with regularly). Though his life is glamorous, he struggles just like the rest of us with his personal health and fitness, challenged by the uniqueness of his schedule, lifestyle and habits. He’s incredibly open about his life and shares with us many of his personal daily habits and how he makes sure to get them in each day. Join me for a conversation about the journey and joy of life, and some profound learnings from the life and experiences of Sal Masekela.
Teacher, speaker, and psychotherapist, Megan Devine, has been stirring up our culture’s ideas around grief and loss since 2009. That’s the year she started down the path of personal wisdom and expertise because in that year, on a beautiful sunny day, she witnessed the accidental drowning of her beloved partner Matt. At that moment, all of her professional experience as a therapist became meaningless. What she found in processing her own grief, was that grief literature is loaded with well-intended advice that can actually worsen and extend someone’s pain. “We just don’t know how to handle loss in our culture.” Since then, Megan has dedicated herself to helping people find a new way to deal with loss that honors their experience without trying to “solve” grief. Much of her work involves processing through writing and journaling, our lifestyle practice in the Whole Life Challenge this week, which is why I originally invited her onto the podcast She's the author of the book, It's OK That You're Not OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture That Doesn't Understand, and is known for her practical, no-nonsense approach to grief, and for her ability to guide people inside some of the most devastating experiences of life and love. She’s an outspoken advocate of emotional intelligence, and the skills needed to love each other better – no matter what life brings. I know this isn’t an easy topic, but it’s one that holds so much value for us in that we’ve all, in some way shape or form dealt with, or will have to deal with the loss of someone or something we love. There is so much value in Megan’s work, I don’t know where to begin. Can’t recommend this one enough. Here are some of the topics from our conversation: Grief - an access point to our authentic self The uncomfortableness of being around someone else who’s grieving, and how to do it Using writing to access your authentic thoughts and feelings Journaling and writing as a place to tell the truth - because for all of us, the truth needs to be spoken, (though maybe not out loud.) The benefit of not labeling yourself “a writer”, or expecting yourself to be good at it The use of a timer and a specific, pre-defined length of time to assist your efforts Writing prompts that work to access your right brain and creative mind. How to get through your resistance to writing. Grief is not a blessing, but it delivers a path straight to your heart and can be beautiful. Gratitude as a companion to grief, not as a replacement. Managing your own sense of helplessness when around others in pain. If you really want to be of service to someone in pain, show up and be uncomfortable. Journaling each day for checking in with yourself. For the full write up with resources, links and contact info, please visit www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast.

Heather Hartmann interviews Andy Petranek, the founder of CrossFit LA and the co-founder of the Whole Life Challenge.
Ryan Hurst is one of the co-founders (and head coach) of the online fitness program called GMB - Gold Medal Bodies. GMB.io is a physical training system that focuses primarily on teaching people how to know their own body and how to move it well, autonomously (appropriately for age and skill level). I mean really, what else is there? As I’ve gone through life, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges people face with their bodies caused by inactivity, lack of use, lack of awareness, and general weakness - so when I first learned about GMB, the philosophic principles upon which it’s based, and the fun I had in going through it’s basic elements training, I fell in love with it. Ryan’s been developing this program (without really knowing it) for most of his life. As a competitive gymnast until the age of 17, he established a foundation of strength, flexibility, agility, balance, coordination and stamina that most people never know. Then, still a teenager, he found his way to Japan where he went to college and started seriously studying the martial arts. In this practice, yet again, he was developing his capacity know and move his own body. As he got deeper into martial arts, he found it increasingly difficult to maintain his position in his job due to the long hours and unhealthy lifestyle practices it demanded. He also sustained a shoulder injury. Both things forced him into looking toward fitness as a career. If you’re participating in the January 2017 WLC, you’re going to see much more of Ryan - he’s going to coach you by video through a series of 8 workouts, one for each week of the Challenge. They are totally optional, but his stuff is filled with new, different, and innovative ways to move your body and to exercise. Guaranteed that no matter what your level, you’ll learn something new. I’m super excited to be able to bring him to you! During the podcast, you’ll learn much more about Ryan, his philosophy, personal experience, and why you should be super excited about him being our guest coach during the Whole Life Challenge.
Rafe Furst, graduate from Stanford in computer science, has seen his share of swings in the tech and business world, having been involved with startups since the mid 1990’s. He’s also an avid poker player, both in private games and public tournaments, once winning a World Series of Poker Championship. He’s raised millions for charitable causes over the years and is currently a pioneer in Quantitative Venture Capital, a nascent field based on the convergence of equity crowdfunding, complexity economics and securities law reform. I asked Rafe to be on the podcast because of an intriguing question he asked me during our first phone conversation. I was telling him about the 7 Habits of the Whole Life Challenge, and he posed a question, “What if there were an 8th Habit that you inadvertently built in without knowing it - the habit of good decision making?” I needed to know more... Inherent to the WLC as well as pretty much anything in your life is the necessity to make decisions. Some are easy, every day, almost automatic - habitual. Others are clear, obvious choices that have far-reaching implications for your life. The place that people get tweaked is when they mix up evaluating the quality of the decision with the outcome or result. Good decisions can lead to undesirable outcomes. An example from poker - you can make every right decision and still lose a hand. You can also make every right decision in a given evening a still lose all your money. It’s the trap that a novice player falls into - looking at the result (I lost all my money), and questioning your decisions (I must have made bad ones). Instead, Rafe looks at his success over the long term, knowing that if he continues to make good decisions (regardless of the immediate outcome), he will eventually get the outcome he wants. Do you see the parallel to health and fitness? Wow… it hit me like a brick in the forehead. People start making good decisions each day… and if they don’t see the result they expect relatively quickly (losing weight, fitting into clothes, dropping dress sizes, achieving a certain score or time for a workout), they judge their decisions as bad or wrong and quit. Or, they achieve the result they expected and quickly forget that they need to continue to make the good decisions that got them there (the yo-yo diet syndrome).

Welcome, welcome, welcome - to another episode of The Retirement Answer Man. My name is Roger Whitney and I am your host, companion, and guide to this episode, where we are going to navigate the farthest reaches of retirement theory and financial planning to help YOU create the retirement and future of your dreams. (Wow, that was a lot). On this episode I’ve got a bunch of good stuff for you, including the definition of a VERY important term (maximum drawdown), my take on the decision the FED made to raise interest rates, and I also get the great honor of introducing you to this year’s participants in my Retirement Plan Live event - James and Linda (not their real names). It’s packed, as you can see… so let’s get into it! What in the HECK does “maximum drawdown” mean? One of the features I’ve added to the Retirement Answer Man podcast recently is the “What Does That Mean” segment, where I explain sometimes complicated and other times boring terms that you really do NEED to know in order to plan wisely for retirement. This week, at the suggestion of a listener (Thank you, Rocky), I’m going to unpack the term “maximum drawdown.” You’ll not only hit the “stop” button at the end of this episode having learned what the term means, you’ll also know why it’s important in thinking through your retirement planning strategy when it comes to risk. Well they finally did it. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates. It’s been an unprecedented time of low interest rates for far longer than is normal, but just recently that came to an end as the FED finally decided to raise rates. It’s bad news for homebuyers but for everyone else it could actually be some very good news? Why? I’m going to tell you why. In fact, I’ve got 5 reasons for you to consider the interest rate hike a very good thing. It’s on this episode of the Retirement Answer Man, along with a lot of other goodies, so make sure you set aside the time to give it a listen. This year’s participants in the Retirement Plan Live event are… (drumroll, please) James and Linda! This couple has graciously agreed to lay their financial lives bare before the world as we do a few weeks of live planning sessions using their real numbers and situation. It’s an opportunity for them to get help and for you to learn a ton as I take them step by step through the things they’re looking to do towards retirement, saving for their children’s college educations, and supplementing an aging mother’s income. It’s a load of stuff and I’m eager to get into it with them. You can join us by doing your own planning right alongside… and you can get free resources to help you in the process. Give this episode of The Retirement Answer Man a listen so you can find out how to get the resources and when you can join us for the RPL sessions. Instead of a New Year’s resolution, how about a whole life challenge? Since New Year’s resolutions typically don’t stick, how about trying something different. Beginning in January I’m going to be taking part in a “whole life challenge,” a methodic way to intentionally work toward improvement in a handful of life areas. I’ve done this particular program before and found it very helpful. I’d like to invite you to join me this year as I start the program again. It’s a paid program (I’m paying, too), but I think you’ll discover that the support and accountability of doing it together will make it more than worth the cost. If you want to find out more… listen to my explanation of it near the end of this episode of The Retirement Answer Man. OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE RETIREMENT ANSWER MAN [0:24] Roger’s introduction to this episode. [0:40] What to expect from Linda and James, this year’s Retirement Plan Live participants. [1:35] Get your own resources to work alongside this year’s Retirement Plan Live (it’s free). WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? SEGMENT [3:58] Why Roger is talking about “maximum drawdown” - a listener question from Rocky. [5:47] What IS maximum drawdown? HOT TOPIC SEGMENT [9:50] The FED has finally raised interest rates…what’s it mean for you? [11:06] Reason #1 to like the rate hike: We now KNOW what’s happening. [11:52] Reason #2: The economy is progressing. [12:56] Reason #3: Savings accounts will yield more interest. [14:13] Reason #4: Corporations may begin to merge or acquire other companies. [14:46] Reason #5: This could be a benefit to quality companies. [16:09] BONUS REASON: The more they raise rates, the more we’ll be able to fight an economic shock in the future. PRACTICAL PLANNING SEGMENT [17:14] Roger’s introduction to Linda and James, this year’s Retirement Plan Live participants. [17:34] Why Linda has agreed to have her financial life exposed on the podcast. [18:45] What Linda’s hoping for through her participation. [19:17] Linda’s biggest fears regarding her involvement. We made it to 20 episodes! That's at least more than that stupid Ferris Bueller's Day Off television sit-com from the 90's. But it's still not as much as Matt LeBlanc's post-friends spin-off “Joey.” That made it to 22 episodes so I guess we have to keep going. Andy Petranek is our guest on this episode. Andy […]
Life offers us a choice – we can play leading roles in our own little, meaningless movies about our own lives which will impact only a few people – or we can play supporting roles in God’s epic adventure where Jesus is the lead and impacts lives for eternity. The recounting of these stories will invites us into His epic story, and reminds us that we all have unique roles to play, our character matters to God, but God is the ultimate Hero.
