The research found that low arginine levels were linked to reduced production of MHC-1, a protein that displays abnormal cellular signals to T cells, according to the report. In mouse models, arginine-rich diets were associated with fewer colon tumors and milder influenza and SARS-CoV-2 infections, the researchers reported. The findings add to prior work linking declining immune function to cancer progression. When arginine is scarce, cells struggle to produce MHC-1 proteins, which appear on the surfaces of cells throughout the body and display foreign or abnormal proteins to T cells. Researchers repeated the dietary studies using mouse models of influenza and SARS-CoV-2, conditions previously associated with unusual levels of different amino acids. One of the most dramatic patterns to emerge was that arginine was the most depleted amino acid in all of these diseases. Not only did mice with an arginine-rich diet have milder symptoms from viral infections, giving the mice arginine after influenza infection improved their outcomes too. Yeast food supplement helps immune cells fight cancer more effectively Trinity College Dublin & University College Dublin, July 9 2026 Researchers from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin (UCD) have shown for the first time that a food supplement made from yeast helps the body to make stronger immune cells that can fight cancer. The research teams found that adding a yeast-based supplement to the food of obese laboratory mice changes how their immune cells grow and help to make better cancer‑fighting cells. Mice were fed a standard or high fat diet supplemented with yeast beta-glucan for 4-12 weeks and then their immune system was challenged by different types of cancer cells (colorectal, skin and breast cancer). The study also tested whether yeast supplementation could overcome immune dysfunction caused by obesity and whether protective effects persist after weight loss. Crucially, this dietary intervention restores anti-tumor innate immunity in obese mice and reverses long-term immune memory defects that persist even after weight loss, a major unmet clinical challenge. Physical activity linked to lower stroke and death risk in adults with atrial fibrillation Arctic University of Norway, August 5 2026 (News-Medical) Being physically active was linked to a lower risk of stroke and death for adults with atrial fibrillation, or AFib, according to new, independent research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. AFib is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that occurs in the heart's upper chamber known as the atria. According to the American Heart Association, it can lead to blood clots, stroke and other heart-related conditions. The prevalence of AFib in the U.S. was estimated at 4.48% of the adult U.S. population. The study tracked more than 87,000 adults in Norway for about 15 years, capturing information about AFib, stroke and death from national health registries. What did the analysis find? Compared to adults who were inactive, adults with a low, moderate or high level of physical activity had a 9%, 19% and 18% lower risk of stroke, respectively. Having a low, moderate or high level of physical activity was associated with an 11%, 18% and 22% lower risk of death from any cause, respectively. For people with AFib, staying active was tied to living an average of 0.5 to 1.2 years longer compared to those who were inactive Phthalates may contribute to high blood pressure in pregnant women Harvard School of Public Health, August 10 2026 (News-Medical) Phthalates, which are chemicals found in plastics, personal care products and hundreds of other consumer goods, may contribute to high blood pressure in pregnant women, according to a study published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society. The researchers measured phthalate exposure and blood pressure in 338 pregnant women at three points during pregnancy. They analyzed whether higher levels of these chemicals-individually and in combination-were linked to higher blood pressure or an increased risk of pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorders. The authors found that pregnant women with higher urine concentrations of fragrance-associated phthalates and those in personal care products had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure markers of an increased risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. About 13% of participants in the study developed a pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorder. Women with higher levels of certain phthalates, especially those found in personal care products, tended to have higher blood pressure later in pregnancy. Daily Collagen Supplement Alters Bone-Related Blood Markers in Female Runners, Study Says Fitchburg State University, University of Connecticut & Mayo Clinic, August 4 2026 (Natural News) A four-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that female distance runners who took 20 grams of collagen peptides per day showed an approximately 5.1 percent rise in P1NP over four weeks, a blood marker of bone formation, while the placebo group showed no such change, according to a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition. The collagen group also showed a drop in IL-6, an inflammatory protein linked to bone breakdown, while placebo levels held steady or rose, the study reported. The trial included 22 female runners ages 18 to 35 who ran at least 35 miles per week, and no adverse effects were reported. Collagen is the most common and abundant protein in the body, accounting for about 30 percent of total protein content and providing structural support to bones, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues, according to published research.       Discussion about this episode

In today's conversation, Dr. Lanna shares her inspiring origin story, and we explore the influence of sexual health and genitourinary syndrome of menopause, common symptoms women experience, and why so few women receive treatment despite how common the condition is. Dr. Lanna explains non-surgical treatment options that improve blood flow, increase orgasms, and improve pelvic floor health, and discusses the influence of senescent cells, the celebrity non-surgical facelift, and how GLP-1 medications influence facial aging. She also shares interesting insights on Korean skincare benefits versus a concierge U.S.-based system, clarifies what biostimulators are and how they stimulate collagen production over time, and explains the influence of PDGF growth factors, cadaver fat transfers, energy devices, and estrogen used on our faces. Stay tuned for a fascinating conversation filled with practical insights into women's health, medical esthetics, and healthy aging.  IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How the continuum of symptoms associated with genitourinary syndrome of menopause is often dismissed as something women simply have to live with The value of vaginal estrogen, and how many women are still denied that treatment due to outdated concerns following the WHI study Non-surgical procedures that can improve blood flow, collagen, elastin, lubrication, sensitivity, orgasms, and pelvic floor health, and why Dr. Lanna considers them regenerative sexual health rather than cosmetic procedures Why it's essential to seek practitioners with extensive training for intimate procedures Dr. Lanna's celebrity non-surgical facelift combines multiple approaches to address every layer of facial aging. How rapid weight loss associated with GLP-1 medications can accelerate facial aging The advantages and limitations of Korean esthetics, and how it differs from a concierge U.S.-based approach What biostimulators are, and how they stimulate collagen production Why Dr. Lanna introduces energy-based devices according to skin quality rather than age alone Dr. Lanna shares her perspective on using topical estriol or estradiol for facial skin Bio: Dr. Lanna Cheuck, DO, FACS, is the CEO, Founder, and Medical Director of LC Medical PLLC with multiple locations and her flagship in the heart of midtown Manhattan. How do you turn a lab-born regenerative medical device into a solution that surgeons actually want to use and investors want to back? The path from academic innovation to clinical adoption is full of practical hurdles and strategic pivots, where compelling science alone isn't enough.David Brühlmann welcomes back Eva-Maria Balet, whose journey spans tissue engineering research at EPFL to leading Regenosca through first-in-human trials, fundraising, and an executive MBA completed while running the company. This conversation covers the practical realities behind that journey, from quality control to clinical setbacks to investor pitches.Topics discussed:Defining TissueSpan's regulatory path and quality control as a medical device (02:49)The significance of first-in-human studies and what early clinical experience reveals (04:11)Selecting an initial clinical indication and opportunities for technology expansion (05:50)Realistic assessment of where soft tissue repair technologies apply—and where they do not (07:18)The stepwise progression from in vitro to animal models in product development (08:18)Navigating setbacks, including the impact of Covid-19 on clinical trials, and the value of adaptability (10:36)Bridging science and business in biotech fundraising and communication (12:15)Key takeaways from pursuing an executive MBA alongside building a biotech company (13:42)The importance of collaboration, mindset, and meaningful networks in driving biotech innovation (15:19)Smart insight: The transition from scientist to founder brought its own learning curve. Eva-Maria pursued an executive MBA while running Regenosca, and points to financial and business vocabulary as the skill she'd have built earlier if she could. For a technical founder or CMC lead, the lesson isn't to become a business generalist, it's that the moment you're translating a manufacturing process or clinical dataset into an investor pitch, fluency in the language of accounting, market strategy, and cost structure becomes as load-bearing as the science itself. This week's episode with Eva-Maria Balet steps out of bioprocessing into MedTech, following a collagen scaffold from EPFL lab bench to first-in-human implant. These back-catalog picks cover similar ground: what it takes to win investor buy-in beyond the science, the discipline of turning a lab process into GMP manufacturing, why regulatory classification shapes a product's whole trajectory, and what it really takes to commercialize a lab discovery.Episodes 259 - 260: Why Strong Science Isn't Enough to Get Funded: What Investors Actually Look For with Michael RomeEpisodes 257 - 258: Why Regulatory Affairs Belongs in Drug Design: 30 Years of CMC Lessons from Discovery to GMP Manufacturing with Milan TomicEpisodes 105 - 106: From Proteins to Cell Therapy: Why ATMPs Aren't Just Complex Biologics with Oliver KraemerEpisodes 183 - 184: From Lab to Market: Secrets to Commercializing Cutting-Edge Biotech Innovations with Chervee HoConnect with Eva-Maria Balet:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/eva-maria-balet-72561737 Regenosca website: www.regenosca.comSupport the show

Imagine a wound too large for the body to close on its own. That's the problem Eva-Maria Balet set out to solve, not with living cells, but with a structural bridge that lets the body's own healing mechanisms do the rest.In this episode, David Brühlmann welcomes Eva-Maria Balet, Co-Founder & CEO of Regenosca. Trained at EPFL, Eva-Maria brought her fascination with cellular "factories" from academia straight into entrepreneurship. Rather than chasing elegant science for its own sake, she built her company around a single principle: start with a real clinical need and build backward, collaborating with clinicians from day one so every experiment serves a patient.Highlights & Topics:Why starting with clinical needs—not just scientific excitement—creates meaningful real-world impact in life sciences (02:38)How Eva-Maria's fascination with biotechnology guided her from cell factories to developing scaffolds for tissue repair (03:51)The unmet challenges in current soft tissue repair treatments and where new solutions are needed (05:51)What makes Regenosca's fully-engineered collagen implant, TissueSpan, different from existing meshes and biological materials (07:09)The biological mechanisms behind tissue regeneration using a temporary collagen scaffold (08:28)Translating lab-scale research into a robust, scalable, and regulatory-compliant production process (10:34)The practical realities and hurdles of navigating the medical device vs. biologic regulatory pathways (11:59)Advice on building regulatory expertise into your founding team or leveraging consultants effectively (13:31)The importance of interdisciplinary teams and trust when forming biotech startups (14:36)Smart insight: Eva-Maria put it plainly: what works in the lab has to work reliably every single time you produce it for a patient. That shift, from proving a concept to controlling a process, from raw materials through in-process controls to final product testing, is the same discipline any CMC scientist recognizes: science alone doesn't get a product to patients. Reproducibility does. This week's episode with Eva-Maria Balet steps out of bioprocessing into MedTech, following a collagen scaffold from EPFL lab bench to first-in-human implant. HEALTH NEWS   Lycopene linked to lower cancer risk in major review Daily routines reduce pain and depression in older adults When nature not only restores, but fortifies Skin Damage May Begin Long Before You Can See It Study Shows Exercise Improves Brain Function for 24 Hours     Lycopene linked to lower cancer risk in major review Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (Iran), July 29 2026 (Natural News)      Lycopene, the red pigment in tomatoes, may offer modest protection against cancer and cancer-related death.   A meta-analysis of 121 studies found high lycopene intake linked to a 5% lower cancer risk, while tomato consumption was tied to an 11% lower risk of cancer death and lycopene intake specifically to a 16% lower risk.   Blood lycopene levels showed stronger protection, with an 11% lower cancer risk and 24% lower risk of cancer death.   Benefits peak at 5 to 8 milligrams of lycopene daily, roughly one to two medium tomatoes.   Cooking tomatoes with healthy fats like olive oil significantly improves lycopene absorption.   Daily routines reduce pain and depression in older adults University of Missouri, July 28 2026 (News-Medical) University of Missouri researchers have identified a simple, effective way to improve quality of life. A new study found that maintaining a consistent daily routine can reduce physical pain and ease symptoms of depression, demonstrating how everyday habits can have a meaningful impact on well-being, particularly for older adults with insomnia. Roughly half of adults age 60 and older report experiencing insomnia symptoms. To better understand how insomnia affects overall well-being, researchers analyzed survey data from 67 older adults, including 37 people with insomnia. As expected, participants with insomnia reported higher levels of pain and depression. Participants who maintained consistent daily routines tended to report lower levels of pain and depression, a relationship that may be explained in part by the way regular schedules help synchronize the body's internal clock. Those daily habits help regulate the body's circadian rhythm that influences sleep, mood and other biological functions. Even small disruptions to daily schedules can throw off the body's internal clock, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as social jet lag.   When nature not only restores, but fortifies Max Planck Institute for Human Development (Germany), July 29 2026 (Eurekalert) A walk in the park after a stressful day is a classic example of how nature can help people switch off and unwind. But natural environments may offer even more: enhancing mood and cognitive performance even when a person was not previously stressed or depleted. This is the finding of a review article published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.  For the review, the researchers evaluated 54 studies that comprised 61 experiments examining the effect on natural and urban environments on cognitive performance, affect or subjective sense of relaxation.  Focus on restoration: For decades, research has primarily examined how nature helps people recover from stress or mental strain. Overlooked ‘instorative' effects: Nature may also promote attention, positive affect and well-being even without prior depletion. Positive findings: Despite their small number, all instorative studies reported improvements in attention, affect or subjective well-being. Implications for daily life: The results suggest that green spaces not only contribute to restoration after depletion but may also promote concentration, resilience and mental health in everyday life.     Skin Damage May Begin Long Before You Can See It Hiroshima University (Japan), July 30, 2026 (SciTech Daily) Skin can appear structurally intact even as the collagen beneath it begins losing its internal organization. An international research team led by Hiroshima University found that the molecular arrangement and supramolecular chirality—or structural handedness—of dermal collagen deteriorate before its fiber network begins to thin or fragment. Collagen supports the skin through a carefully organized hierarchy that extends from molecules to larger fibers. This arrangement gives tissue much of its structure and mechanical strength. To identify changes that ordinary imaging could not detect, the researchers combined advanced optical imaging with chiroptical spectroscopy, a method that measures how structures with a particular handedness interact with light. They researchers examined collagen abundance and the coherence of its chiral organization within the same physical section of tissue. The measurements revealed that collagen quantity and collagen organization do not necessarily decline together. Tissue samples could retain much of their overall collagen coverage and mass even after the coherence of their supramolecular chirality had deteriorated substantially. In other words, the visible fiber network could still appear largely intact while its internal order was already breaking down. That separation suggests that collagen deterioration begins at smaller structural scales before becoming obvious through changes in fiber shape or abundance.     Study Shows Exercise Improves Brain Function for 24 Hours University College London, July 22 2026 (Natural News)     A recent study reports that moderate-to-vigorous physical activity can improve memory and cognitive performance for up to 24 hours after exercise.   According to the study, researchers tracked 76 British adults over eight days, monitoring their activity levels and sleep patterns while administering daily cognitive tests. The study found that for every additional 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, participants performed better on tests of episodic memory and working memory the following day. Episodic memory involves recalling personal experiences, while working memory holds information temporarily for decision-making. Light activity showed weaker effects, and sedentary time was not associated with cognitive benefits, according to the researchers.   The study classified activity into three categories: sedentary, light and moderate-to-vigorous. The moderate-to-vigorous category included brisk walking, running, cycling and resistance training. Light activity showed weaker benefits, and sedentary behavior was associated with no improvement, the researchers said. The study also examined the contribution of sleep. For every extra 30 minutes of REM or deep sleep, participants showed improvements in memory and attention span the following day, the researchers said.

What if almost nothing you're putting on your face is actually getting in?This week, I sat down with Madalaina Conti, the New York esthetician behind Synergistic Skincare and the first practitioner to bring Qi Beauty to NYC. She's the one I fly across the country to see. But the skin you see now? That took over a decade. Madalaina spent her teens and twenties in deeply cystic, nodular acne that sat right on her jawbone and gave her toothaches. She almost didn't go to esthetics school at all, because she figured nobody would trust a girl who couldn't fix her own face. Here's what blew my mind. She told me you're only absorbing around 4% of what you apply topically unless you're doing something to drive it deeper. Four percent. Now go look at your shelf. Then she dropped a bomb on half the trends on your feed. Collagen masks — your skin can't decode and use it. LED masks — the wavelengths matter enormously, and some of those lights are the same tech used to hatch eggs. At-home microneedling — you can trigger an immune response that has to be surgically removed. And then we went somewhere I didn't expect at all: sound healing, cranial work, dating in New York, and why getting older might be the most exciting thing happening to us.After this one, you'll never look at your skincare shelf the same way. What we talk about:- Why her cystic acne caused toothaches — and what was actually behind it- Androgen sensitivity vs. "hormonal acne," and why your labs come back normal- Why sound healing and cranial decompression belong in a facial- The zinc "butt cream" trend and what she'd do instead- LED masks, red light, and the wavelengths that actually build collagen- PDRN, salmon DNA, and whether the topical version does anything- Slugging without wrecking your skin — plus the products to skip- Why acne scars and pigment need time, not another serumCheck out the full episode on all platforms: Hydrate With Tracy DuhsEpisode Links & Resources:Website: https://madalainaconti.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/madalainaconti/Connect with Tracy:Website: https://tracyduhs.com/Hydration Shop: https://sanctuarysd.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tracyduhs/Flow FAM Community: https://tracyduhs.com/join-flow-fam/

In the final episode of Clinical Misfits, Dr Mary discusses some genetic conditions that account for a lot of the physical, mental, psychological and behavioural characteristics, present in varying degrees in the majority of neurodivergent people. These are largely due to defects in collagen!Collagen is a major structural protein throughout the body and nervous system. In the majority of cases, this causes organs, blood vessels, bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments to sag. The result may be weakness in many organs and structures, including throughout the gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, respiratory, reproductive, urinary and nervous system. Oh wait! That's pretty much the whole person! Want to know how this works? Dr Mary has some good information in this episode!

Send us Fan MailDavid Suzuki, founder and CEO of Bio-Therapeutic, explains frequency specific microcurrent: how it stimulates the mitochondria, why ATP decline drives aging, and what the clinical data shows. What is Bio-Therapeutic?A second generation, FDA registered device manufacturer founded in the 1970s by Suzuki's father, an electrical engineer who worked on Boeing missile systems before turning to the body's own electrical system. "Every function in the human body is powered by cellular energy, but the frequencies are what the commands are."How does aging relate to mitochondria and ATP?ATP production peaks in the mid 20s and declines, leaving damage unrepaired. Collagen, elastin, and circulation are all ATP driven. "What I really have when I look in the mirror is age... a collection of damage that I no longer have enough cellular energy to repair in real time."What is the difference between EMS, TENS, and microcurrent?EMS twitches muscles and above roughly 300 microamps shuts the mitochondria down. TENS controls pain without healing. Microcurrent works low. "If you're down in the more 40 to 80 microamps, that's really where the sweet zone is." A 1982 study found low microamperage can generate up to 500 times more ATP.What does the clinical data show?University of Washington studies found wound healing "sped up by nearly four times," plus a 14 percent collagen synthesis improvement, a 48 percent elasticity increase, and a 38 percent circulation increase over roughly 20 days. What order should you layer microcurrent with skincare?Cleanse, exfoliate, microcurrent, then products smallest molecule to largest. The stratum corneum is non living and non conductive. "70 to 80 percent of the products that you put on topically will get caught up in the stratum corneum and never make it to the living tissue."How much does microcurrent improve absorption?"Your electricity is going to help get much better absorption into the skin, maybe 50 to 60 percent more than if you were just topically applied," provided the skin is properly exfoliated first. Why does ingredient concentration matter? Many brands cite a study's results while dosing a fraction of the studied amount. "That is a true statement. They just left out the fact that it was a 2 percent introduction of that particular key ingredient."What pairs well with microcurrent?LED across blue, yellow, and red wavelengths, plus oxygen infusion, since the Krebs cycle is aerobic. "You start to spray that onto the surface of the skin... your mitochondria are chirping like little birds."Can you use microcurrent with Botox and fillers?Yes, with coordination and timing. "You just want to make sure that whoever your injector is, that they're aware that you're doing microcurrent." Expect a three to four week gap, longer for fillers. How is microcurrent different from microneedling or laser? Those work through controlled damage. Microcurrent upregulates what the body already does, and it moves muscle. "There's nothing else that does the sculpture of the face. And that's where microcurrent comes in."Does microcurrent fatigue your muscles? Not at proper levels. High current EMS depletes localized ATP; low level microcurrent does the opposite. "You can't really overdo it with microcurrent, but you can basically really regenerate them and make them healthy."Is microcurrent safe for the heart?Facial current stays localized between the probes. Federally required contraindications include "pacemaker, any sort of heart issues, thrombosis, phlebitis." Anyone with a heart condition or implant should clear it with their physician.Listen to the full episode with David Suzuki of Bio-Therapeutic on Skin Anarchy, available wherever you get your podcasts.Shop Bio-TherapeuticDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!*This is a paid collaborationSupport the show

In Part 2 of this mini series on Collagen Loss, Dr. Mary Alice Mina moves from biology to action: the exact morning and evening skincare routine that makes sense for post-menopausal skin, which ingredients actually have evidence behind them, and which in-office treatments are worth the money. She walks through why a routine built for oily 20-something skin works against you later, then breaks down a simple AM routine (gentle cleanse, antioxidant/vitamin C serum, moisturizer, sunscreen) and PM routine (cleanse, retinol/retinoid as the cornerstone anti-aging ingredient, moisturizer), plus how to exfoliate without damaging the skin barrier. She then ranks in-office options — red light therapy, IPL, microneedling, neurotoxins, resurfacing lasers, chemical peels, and skin-tightening devices — explaining who each is right for and when surgery becomes the better conversation. The message throughout: it doesn't need to be complicated or expensive, just consistent and matched to where your skin actually is.
