Quick New Year rant on why having a system beats just being motivated long term. Most adults aren't lazy. They're overloaded with...Work, Kids, Stress, Alcohol, with No Margin. And when life gets full, motivation disappears first....this is why having real structure is vital. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows!   This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track!   Check out today's questions:    Arianne: Hi Dr. Cabral, First, I want to say thank you for all of your resources! I start every day with your podcast - it is truly the best out there! My question is regarding the medication, Leucovorin, and its use in treating Autism. I have a 3 year old son who is non-verbal and is moderately Autistic. His pediatrician has prescribed Leucovorin on a titration schedule where he will be monitored for its effects. To note my own lab results, I have MTHFR, high levels of mercury and aluminum, low electrolytes/minerals, anemia/low ferritin, and gut issues - likely these were passed along to my son. I plan to have him complete the labs now that he is old enough. What is your advice on Leucovorin and its safety & efficacy, also should I be concerned with potential fillers and aluminum in the drug?       Sheena: Hi Dr C! Hope you and your team are well. I was just wondering if all bovine collagen has protein in it, even if it doesn't say it on the label? And if so, does the protein count towards my daily protein intake? Thank you so much in advance for answering!                                                                                                                                                                      Jonny: Hello Dr. Cabral, Recently done some mitochondrial testing and found that my complex 2+3 are operating at 16% activity, and complex 2 at 58%, so there unable to turn substrate into energy efficiently. I'm wondering if you have any advice. Currently dealing with CIRS, Sibo/dysbiosis/chronic stress/Trauma. Non starchy carbs make me jittery, as well as stressors in general, but it's not blood sugar, as I've worn monitors and my levels seem fairly ideal. I think it's the CIRS jitters, shakiness that I've heard you speak of. I just got your new book, so I'm going to read through that for any tips. Already taking adrenal soothe, working with a therapist, doing my best to lower the stressors in my life. I know 90-120 days for red blood cell/mitochondrial turnover, so things can take time. Thanks                            Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral, I've heard conflicting advice on cold plunging for people with high stress or adrenal dysregulation. How to you determine if cold exposure if supportive or not. Thanks!                                                                           Sarah: I'm curious about histamine intolerance and allergies. why do some people suddenly develop reactions to something that haven't had all their lives. I used to not be allergic to horses for instance, I could ride them when I was younger, but now I can't even be in the same room with someone who has been around them. Welcome back to Bri Books, the podcast (and corner of the internet) where we educate, entertain, and feel our way through ideas both on and off the page. As we head toward the end of 2025 and look ahead to 2026, I'm sharing my best-of beauty and skincare favorites — the products I've loved all year and continue to reach for during the colder months. These are my true winter staples: products that prioritize hydration, warmth, glow, and comfort when the weather (and life) feels a little harsher. If you're new to the show, leave a review of Bri Books on Apple Podcasts, and listen to Bri Books on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Please tell me where you're traveling to by using #bribooks on Instagram and subscribe to the Bri Books newsletter at bribookspod.com/newsletter.  So cozy up with your tea, light a candle, swipe on your favorite lip gloss, and let's begin. Bri Books' Winter Beauty Philosophy I always think about winter beauty through memory. Last December, I was sipping hot cider by my Brooklyn window, watching snow fall, listening to my radiator hiss, and feeling my skin crack, peel, and protest. Late winter dryness hits me every year, so I've learned to curate intentionally. Here's how I nurture my skin and my beauty in the winter and beyond. 1. Dyson Corrale Flat Iron — $499–$539 I've used the Dyson Corrale for over five years, and it remains unmatched. Its flexing plates reduce heat damage and tugging, which is especially important when winter hair is already dry and fragile. Yes, it's an investment — but if you want salon-quality results at home, it's worth it. 2. Kérastase Nutritive Range — $40–$85 per product at Sephora For deep nourishment, the Kérastase Nutritive line is my winter hero. I use the shampoo weekly, followed by either the conditioner or the Riche mask. I always finish with the Nectar Thermique heat protectant and the split ends serum. When my scalp is dry, I add the hydrating scalp serum. If you're heat-styling more, always pair it with a mask. Winter hair loves moisture. 3. Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm — $42 at Sephora This cult favorite transforms from balm to oil to milk and melts away makeup and SPF without stripping the skin. It feels incredibly luxe — and in winter, hydration should feel indulgent. 4. Sephora Collection Overnight Hydrating Dose Mask — $10 each 2025 had me on more planes than ever — Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Mexico. Sephora's sheet masks became my travel and weekend staples. They're affordable, effective, and easy to keep in rotation when your skin feels parched. 5. Elasten Liquid Collagen — $99 on Amazon This is my only true "health" pick of the year. Collagen production declines with age, and liquid collagen supplements can help support skin elasticity and hydration — especially when paired with vitamin C. I take mine in the morning with tea. It's a small ritual with a big payoff. 6. LUSH Bath Bombs & Epsom Salts — $6–$13 per bath bomb Long soaks are my ultimate self-care reset. I love LUSH bath bombs for the sensory experience, paired with classic Epsom salts for muscle relief. There's nothing like a hot bath before diving into life admin — or after a long day. 7. Mandelic Acid + Vitamin C — $20–$100 depending on brand After years of experimenting, I've stabilized my routine with professional guidance. Mandelic acid gently exfoliates while vitamin C protects against dullness and boosts brightness — a winter glow essential. 8. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic — $185 Still my gold-standard antioxidant serum. It protects against oxidative stress from dry air and gives the skin a true glow shield. 9. Byredo "Mixed Emotions" Eau de Parfum — $235 Fragrance sets the mood for me year-round, and Byredo has completely captured my heart. Mixed Emotions is warm, woodsy, softly sweet, and deeply comforting — like a winter hug. 10. La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 — $49 SPF is non-negotiable, even in winter. This lightweight, broad-spectrum sunscreen works beautifully under makeup and doesn't irritate my eyes or sensitive skin. 11. OPI Infinite Shine Holiday 2025 — $7–$15 Winter nails take a beating with constant handwashing and gloves. OPI Infinite Shine delivers gel-like durability without the commitment. I love deep reds, classics, and neutral shades all season long. These are my winter beauty favorites — the products that carried me through 2025 and will absolutely stay with me into 2026. Let me know what you've tried, what you're curious about, and what you want to explore next. I'm always here for cozy beauty conversations. At some point after 35 or 40, a lot of guys quietly decide that decline is normal. They chalk up weight gain, low energy, aches, poor sleep, lower confidence, and slower recovery as “just getting older.” That mindset is killing men early. Aging is real... but giving up is optional. The truth is, most men aren't actually losing their edge because of age. They're losing it because they stopped training with intention, stopped eating with structure, and stopped having a real plan... we dig into all this on the episode. Naomi shares how her clinical background shaped the development of collagen-stimulating treatments, why skin quality is becoming central to modern aesthetic practice, and what clinicians should understand about choosing and using these products safely. This episode also touches on the often-misunderstood regulatory landscape in Australia, including how topical products differ from TGA-regulated medicines, what clinicians should be checking before introducing a new product, and why transparency from suppliers matters more than ever. “Paraben-free,” “non-comedogenic,” “medical-grade skincare,” "collagen-boosting," "benzene-free," “fragrance-free,” and “dermatologist-tested” are among the most commonly used terms in cosmetic and skincare marketing worldwide. These familiar labels are often treated as shortcuts for trust, quality, and clinical legitimacy—yet without consistent regulation, their meanings can be surprisingly fluid. Do they carry meaningful weight from a scientific and dermatologic standpoint, or are they simply marketing buzzwords that blur the line between evidence and persuasion? In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Michelle Wong, PhD. Dr. Wong is a Chemistry PhD, beauty and cosmetic science communicator, and author based in Sydney, Australia. She is known online as Lab Muffin Beauty Science, having amassed over 1.5 million followers by educating the public about the science behind beauty products and ingredients.Dr. Wong received her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Sydney, with a dissertation focused on cyclic peptide-based structures for medicinal and supramolecular applications. Welcome to "Thriving in Midlife Redefining Aging with Wellness" the podcast where we discuss how to live an extraordinary life in every aspect. I'm your host, Kellie Lupsha, a high-performance health coach, who is delighted to be your guide to vitality. In today's episode, Dr. Heide and I dive into a topic most women don't think about until it becomes a problem: the truth about bone strength, aging, and preventing the kinds of injuries that can dramatically change our future. As winter sets in and the risk of slips, trips, and falls increases, I wanted to have a real conversation about how we can support our bodies from the inside out.Key Highlights:Why women are more prone to falls and fractures (especially hip fractures). The myths about calcium supplements and why calcium alone isn't enough. The importance of vitamin D, K2, and magnesium for bone strength. How movement, especially jumping, rebounding, lifting weights, and unilateral exercises, activates the parathyroid gland to strengthen bones. Why the U.S. has high hip-fracture rates despite heavy calcium supplementation. The role of collagen and strontium in bone remodeling.Personal and client success stories with OsteoStrong and strength training. The message: bone health is built over years, and what you do today determines your mobility, aging, and longevity.Key Takeaways:“Once a woman… gets that hip fracture, your chances of survival for the next three to five years plummet significantly. You just shorten your lifespan dramatically after that hip fracture.” -Kellie Lupsha“Every time you work out, every time you jump up and down… we activate the parathyroid gland, and it really charges up or balances that calcium in our body.” -Dr.Heidi*TAKE THE FREE ~ DISCOVER YOUR MIDLIFE HEALTH BLUEPRINT*****>>> Click Here

Title: Enhanced Collagen Detection in Liver Fibrosis: A Comparative Study of Picrosirius Red Staining With and Without Bouin's Pretreatment   Authors: Nate Rampy, BS, Amber Moser, BS, HTL(ASCP)cm, Hannah Benton, BS, Brad Bolon, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVP, DABT and Elizabeth A. Chlipala, BS, HTL(ASCP)QIHC, Premier Laboratory, LLC, Longmont, Colorado; GEMpath, Inc., Longmont, Colorado Abstract: The use of Bouin's solution as a post-fixation treatment, rather than a primary fixative, remains largely unexplored in Picrosirius Red (PSR) procedures for collagen detection. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of PSR staining in liver samples from mouse, rat, and human with and without Bouin's solution as a pretreatment step. Liver sections were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, processed and embedded in paraffin before being sectioned at 4 microns and stained with PSR. Bouin's was applied prior to staining for 60 minutes at 70º C, not as a fixative, but as a mordant to enhance dye-tissue interactions. Stained slides were scanned at 20x with an Aperio AT2. Visual assessment and image analysis in bright field microscopy demonstrated that the slides pretreated with Bouin's had significantly improved collagen differentiation, with enhanced contrast. By comparison, slides stained without the Bouin's pretreatment showed weaker and less distinct collagen staining. Our findings suggest that Bouin's pretreatment significantly improves collagen staining contrast and differentiation. The use of Bouin's pretreatment may serve as a valuable revision to the standard histology protocol for PSR fibrosis evaluation as well as general collagen visualization.

I'm sure you've heard of using collagen for skin, hair, and anti-aging, but does collagen really work? It does, but in more ways than you think! Find out about the real benefit of collagen you've probably never heard about. Learn more about collagen absorption to maximize the benefits! 0:00 Introduction: Collagen benefits1:04 What is collagen?2:45 More benefits of collagen 4:10 Collagen peptides 7:58 The best collagen sources9:22 Improving collagen absorption and functionCollagen is often used for hair, skin, nails, and joints. It's been used to prevent wrinkles and as a beauty product, but the real benefit of collagen has nothing to do with beauty! Our ancestors ate animals nose to tail. This means they included organ meats, bone marrow, cartilage, and skin as vital parts of their diet.Around 30% of the protein in your body is collagen. It makes up the connective tissue of the body. Your tendons, ligaments, cartilage, fascia, and even a portion of your bones are made of collagen. In modern times, most of our meat doesn't contain much collagen. Only 1% to 3% of the protein we eat is collagen. This can lead to deficiencies in glycine, a key amino acid. When you're 17, you have the most collagen of your entire life. As we age, we lose a significant amount of collagen, leading to skin sagging, wrinkles, joint issues, and increased overall fragility. Here are some of the surprising benefits of collagen:•Antioxidant properties•Helps increase glutathione •Gut lining repair •Glycine for sleep and detoxificationMost of the collagen from the diet breaks down into amino acids. Only 10% remains as collagen peptide chains. Peptides are signaling molecules that tell the body to repair and rebuild connective tissue. These peptides trigger specific genes that activate the fibroblast cells in the body to produce collagen and elastin. When you consume muscle meat, eggs, and whey protein, you're only getting amino acids, not the signaling molecules for repairing and rebuilding. To increase your collagen intake, you can try a collagen supplement. You can also consume collagen-rich foods, such as the skin on chicken or fish. You can use bones, joints, and cartilage to make a variety of stews and soups. Bone marrow is an excellent source of collagen!Grass-fed, grass-finished beef has more collagen than conventional beef. You can even try mixing collagen powder in your coffee! Don't forget the cofactors, vitamin C, biotin, and trace minerals, which are vital for collagen absorption and function.Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting. This episode features speakers from the 2025 ADSA Opening Session Panel: Designing Dairy 2045—Envisioning the Future of Cows, Dairy Products, and Farms, which explored the long-term future of dairy.Dr. VandeHaar explains the idea behind creating the panel discussion for the opening session and his selection of the other three podcast guests as panel members. (2:02)Dr. Baes was the genomics expert on the panel. Her talk focused on what types of data have been collected on dairy cattle in the past and in the future, as well as the collaboration needed among different disciplines to ensure the right information is being collected in the appropriate way. (4:54)Dr. Hostens was the data analytics expert on the panel. He is a veterinarian by training, but has a strong interest and passion around big data. He notes that a “gut feeling is good, but data is better.” He talks about a project where an existing language model was trained with all Journal of Dairy Science abstracts since 1917 so that answers from chatbots would be fed by JDS knowledge. He talks about other ways this type of approach could be used in the future to provide answers to questions on-farm. (8:09)Eve is the Senior Vice President of Strategic Intelligence at DMI and was the food futurist expert on the panel. She notes that dairy's image is shifting to that of a health and wellness food. The question then becomes what is the future of health and wellness, and what does the dairy industry need to do to build towards that future? She talks about the roles of data and artificial intelligence in enabling us to design the foods of the future tailored to each individual. She advises that knowing more about your product than anyone else on the planet through technology and science allows you to anticipate what consumers are going to want and need in the future.   (14:33)The panel talks about genetic selection to produce particular components “naturally” rather than through food processing, where the industry is headed in regard to total milk production, breeding dairy cows for health, providing tools for making wise use of resources especially in developing countries, and how the future of big data could impact decisions made on-farm. (20:12)Eve talks about the consumer who has (processed) collagen in their coffee each morning but also demands clean, whole foods. Consumers want it all. She envisions a future where consumers will know the truth about how foods work in their body because they'll have the technology to measure it. The group goes on to talk about wearable technology like continuous glucose monitors and the variability that exists in the human population compared to variation in Holstein cows, for example. (35:05)The guests talk about where the gaps are in technology - what else do we need to take the next step? Dry matter intake might be one, but Dr. Baes notes that the Danish have technology through video of the feed bunk that allows them to predict intake with surprisingly high accuracy. (41:59)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. Red meat, when eaten as part of a nutrient-rich, whole-food diet, supports brain function and gut health by supplying hard-to-get nutrients like vitamin B12, zinc, selenium, choline, and taurine that enhance mitochondrial energy and mental clarity People who included moderate amounts of red meat in a high-quality diet had higher brain-supporting nutrient levels and greater gut microbial diversity — key indicators of resilience and emotional well-being Processed meats such as bacon and sausage are a different story; even half a slice daily was linked to faster cognitive aging, higher dementia risk, and damage caused by nitrosamine formation from nitrites Choosing grass fed and finished red meat, cooking it gently, and pairing it with antioxidant-rich vegetables maximizes nutrients while minimizing oxidative stress and inflammation Collagen-rich cuts like oxtail, shank, or bone broth balance the amino acid profile of muscle meat, strengthening connective tissue, improving sleep, and reducing inflammation for lasting vitality
