Send us a textOne of the most heard statements people post online, and that I get asked about a lot, is; Diastasis Recti is a lifelong condition that you will always need to manage. So in this episode I talk about why this is clearly ridiculous. Also; Postpartum backpain is very common but that doesn't mean it's inevitable or can't be resolved. So that's what we're talking about for the other half of the podcast.and, very briefly, why I don't think the type of diet you choose for weightloss matters that much and why I don't find it interesting. Send us a textIn this week's episode I have the pleasure of being joined by Dr Emilie Wilson.Emilie is a Naturopathic doctor and, more importantly, she's also the author of "POST: The Essential Guide to Creating Your Postpartum Self-Care Plan in Pregnancy" .We are talking about the importance of planning for your postpartum life during your pregnancy. As I've mentioned before; the more you plan for things going well, and things potentially not going great, the easier your postpartum life (and mental health) will be.Emilie talks us through the things to focus on and one or two things that very often get overlooked. We speak about Postpartum Depression and Anxiety and how preparing for everything early on can really help if you are unfortunate enough to be one of the many women who suffer from this.Emilie also explains how to set up a good support network and how to bring the family in successfully. As always when discussing these things we also talk about the gaps there are in the healthcare system, how it could be improved, and how to navigate your way through that yourself. Her book is a tremendous reference work and you can download a FREE guide that actually helps you out a lot already hereYou can find her in all the right places; Her websiteInstagramFacebookAnd definitely get that guide!!As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles. It was my first understanding in how diet, stress, and environment can have a major impact on our health."Heather - "Hi! I'm Heather and have been teaching Pilates since 1999. I am a Mother of 2 boys and I own this wonderful business where I get to help people find their groove again. After my first was born, I healed my Diastasis Recti and pelvic floor using the methods I have learned through Pilates and other DR work. After my second, I was so busy with the first, I had a much harder time healing my DR. After 3 years and still not loving the way everything looked, I dove deeper.I lift, CrossFit, and practice Pilates. My core was strong, but after having two babies late in the game (my first came when I was 37 and the second right before I tuned 40), I lost more elasticity than I was willing to admit. The work I had done was working to a point and halting.I found Sarah Duvall's Postpartum Exercise Specialist Certification program and through what I have learned from her and my own experience, I have been developing a system to help mamas heal their pelvic floor and Diastasis, help answer those embarrassing questions as to why I pee when I jump, and empower these mamas to feel strong and beautiful."Connect with Clare and Heather on Facebook and Instagram @mamacarecomplete or check them out on their website at www.mamacarecomplete.com.------------------------------------------------------Ready to get your toddler to listen in 2 seconds?Heather has her M.Ed, and a proud Twin Mama of busy toddlers. After receiving a tonne, well 6, of emails about postpartum backpain over the past few weeks I am bringing you a chat I had with David Jeter who is an awesome physical therapist. We're talking post-partum back-pain and the benefits of physical therapy and exercise generally. We discuss many, many things including; What is post-partum back pain and what causes it?Is surgery THE solution? Why is post-partum backpain soo often ignored by both the medical community and those suffering from it?Why are people not aware just how effective physical therapy is to deal with back-pain?How the PT community is doing a terrible job of promoting the benefits of exercise and is spending too much time selling cheap-tricks.And how you can help yourself if you're suffering from any sort of muscle related pain.In the news this week, this article from the American Association for Cancer Research which demonstrates nicely how certain myths don't die out. I hear the following phrase a lot in my daily life "A glass of red wine a day is good for you" and it's just not true,ALL types of alcohol raise the risk of certain cancers, which is something to be aware of. HOWEVER...That doesn't mean drinking gives you cancer..stuff like this isn't black and white. As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles. This week I try to highlight that postpartum recovery, and postpartum health issues, are generally nothing to be scared of.Diastasis recovery, pelvic girdle pain and back pain solutions are often sold to new mums as "you have A PROBLEM!! BE AFRAID!!" rather than "Yeah, we can sort this. Don't worry about it."I highlight some of the tactics used to trick you into buying something you don't need.I also talk about why I think most people will have enough if they have follow a good postpartum program for 3 months. After that you should really be able to start doing what you actually want to do again. As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles. Just because your class is called 'core' it might not be doing you as much good as you think! Why? Too many fitness professionals are still cueing the wrong muscle activation, meaning that we just do Ab work, not core! The result is more internal pressure and more dysfunction, often leading to pelvic floor weakness (even among young girls). In todays episode I deep dive into this issue and help you to identify if your core is actually just ab work! Answering member questions this week I am talking about the difference between the various kinds of diastasis and whether you should do different exercises to help recover from them. And I'm talking about whether you can heal diastasis just by losing weight and if being overweight is actually that big of a deal when it comes to diastasis recti.Believe it or not, this takes me 25 minutes so you're welcome :)Email peter@healthypostnatalbody.com if you have any questions or comments or want me to interview a specific person As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles. Today's we're delving into a topic that's surprisingly common yet often overlooked – diastasis, or abdominal separation. Now, I know what you might be thinking – "Isn't that just a post-pregnancy thing?" Yes, it often is, but it's not exclusively and it isnt always something that just sorts itself out. It's estimated that between 50% and two thirds of all postpartum women experience some degree of abdominal separation. But here's the thing; it's not just about the aesthetics. It's about the deeper impact on your core health and overall well-being.Abdominal separation isn't just about the size of the gap. It's about the coordinated activation (or lack of) of the deeper layers of muscle and fascia that make up your core. When these aren't working together, it can lead to issues beyond just the appearance of your belly. We're talking about core stability, pain management, and overall body function. And here's the twist – the pain from abdominal separation often shows up in other areas like the lower back, hips, or even the neck. It's a ripple effect that can cause discomfort and frustration. But the good news is, there's so much we can do to restore and support the healing process. I want to invite you to join me on a transformative journey. Whether you're a new mum, a not so new mum, or just someone looking to prioritise your core and pelvic floor health, I've got you covered.I'm thrilled to report that my signature "6 weeks - Transform Your Core" program is returning in September. It's not just trampolining that places excess strain on the pelvic floor. By understanding where and when your pelvic floor is in its strongest V's most vulnerable position, you can better manage your movement to minimise pelvic floor compromise... or better still, learn to how correctly identify and strengthening the key muscles! In todays episode I unpick the anatomy and bio-mechanical impact (dont worry, nothing too technical) of the pelvic floor and share details of how you can get 100% clear on which of your pelvic floor muscles (yes, there is more than one) that you need to be strengthening and how to do it! Recognising when something is not working for us, is critical to progress. We need to understand and admit when what we are doing is not working and we have to change our course of action. Climbing the perilous spiral staircases of our local 11th Century castle, was such a great 'aha' moment for me to comprehend that 'no ' really can be the right answer. Whilst on the surface it can feel like defeat, its crucial to look closer and appreciate that a balanced, educated decision can be the right one for our body. And enables us to work at things from a different angle. Are you one of the many women who grabs a pad, or puts up with their prolapse at the gym, or to head off running? Sometimes we need need to stop and appreciate that battling on ignoring the issue is not actually what our bodies needs. In this week's episode I am lucky enough to answer several great questions from someone who emailed in.Here are the questions I was asked;1. I'm not sure I'm doing the home workouts right. When there is a spot that says "breathing (lying)" or "(standing)", does that just mean I do the upward motion breath that many times while lying or sitting? (I explain why we do this) And am I supposed to breathe up from my lower abdomen as shown in the breathing video every time I exhale in an exercise?2. So, I was super diligent the first 6 weeks, but then I had a whole bunch of things come up right after the other and I've been pretty inconsistent for the last 6 weeks. I got all the way through weeks 1-4 and noticed a huge difference in strength and my diastasis gap and then got half way through weeks 4-8. I've done the workouts off and on since then but my gap seems to have digressed and gotten bigger... is that possible or am I imagining it? And if it is possible, how do I stop it from spreading apart again, are there certain motions I just can't do anymore? 3. Are the exercises you have us do in this 12 week program safe for early pregnancy as well, or just for postnatal?4. And last question, how will I be able to tell once my body is strong enough again and how can I know that my diastasis is healed? (Since it's apparently normal to have a small gap there, I'm not sure how to tell once I've achieved a healthy level of separation.)As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles. So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! It's been such a wonderful start to 2024, seeing women progress and feel confident with their movement, core and pelvic floor! So, this week I'm taking on the role of Easter bunny and spreading the love!Too many people STILL cue navel to spine to activate their core and feel demotivated with 'lazy glutes'. No, no, no. Let's get educated and empowered to move in a way that supports and strengthens! As a population, we are largely switched off, stressed and disconnected. We expect to jump into great movement patterns when we exercise, but it takes focused unpicking of habits, followed by re-education and practice of new ones in order for the magic to happen! We need to connect with and restore the breath, to enable the pelvic floor to brace the core... and then bring in a whole glorious symphony of bio-mechanical shifts... that enable the body to move in a way that feels good, supported and ultimately stronger! This is what I passionately try to deliver in each and every class I host. And, whilst I'm taking a break this Easter, I'm treating you to test out the MembersHub FREE for access to 100's of my classes until April 8th 2024... plus if you are super speedy, you can join Fridays LIVE class at 8.45GMT! Can't make it live? Don't worry, within the MembersHub I upload each class, so you can hit play that evening when it suits you! Keen to jump in.... In short, our answer is ‘yes'. With all of the physical challenges of pregnancy, delivery and the early post-partum period, we believe everyone should get pelvic floor physical therapy. But let's dive into why that is!First, let's recognize in America we are significantly behind the rest of the world with this. In many places in the developed world pelvic floor physical therapy is automatically prescribed to every single person after having a baby. Here's why this is so important: 1. Pregnancy is nine months of body changes. Things seem like they're changing every day. You move differently. Your center of balance changes. You're likely dealing with some discomfort or pain (especially if you aren't going to a pelvic PT during pregnancy). You have increased demand on your pelvic floor for nine months. These are massive changes to the body!2. Delivery (no matter how you delivered) is a major trauma. Giving birth vaginally is a marathon event. The body is taxed to it's outer limits - and beyond - for anywhere from 4 hours to 2 days. And a C-Section is a major surgery! 3. Postpartum has it's own challenges. Once baby is here, your daily life changes overnight. You're lifting and carrying. You're holding the baby to your chest to breastfeed. You are hoisting car seats and carriers. This often creates issues not just in the pelvic floor but in your back, hands, feet or other areas. The vast majority of people who delivery a baby have post-partum issues like:Low back pain (77%)Incontinence (50%)Diastasis recti (50%)Prolapse (30-40%)Painful Intercourse (40%)C-Section Scar Healing (25-30%)General Pelvic Pain (10-20%)Like anything else, these symptoms don't get easier to treat the longer they are ignored. We want to make sure we're able to resolve these before they get worse or start impacting other areas. No matter how long it's been since your delivery, pelvic floor physical therapy can help. You don't have to live with post-partum issues or feel disconnected from your body!Local to Southern California? If you're local to Southern California, make sure to give our office at PelvicSanity (www.pelvicsanity.com) a call. Diastasis recti (also known as DR) affects ⅔ of women during pregnancy and continues into postpartum for most women. The separation of your abs as a result of pregnancy and/or postpartum can be really frustrating and cause women to feel self-conscious. In this episode we are talking all about what diastasis recti is, how to know if you have it, and what to do to improve it.I, Krystle, walk you through a test you can do on yourself to see if you might have DR. I also share my own personal experience with DR and how I didn't get it until almost a year after I had my third child. I want you to remember that there is a lot that we can do about DR and toward the end of this episode I talk you through some exercises that you can do at home to help improve your symptoms. I hope this episode helps you understand how to better connect with your core whether you have DR or not. Really being connected to our bodies is so important to the function of our nervous system which can in return help us feel more confident in our own skin.If you enjoyed listening to this episode, we would love it if you could share it to your Instagram stories and tag us, @expectingandempowered. We're back!! after an extended festive break, I have a glorious new batch of chats for you, with some changes along the way, including some solo clinical spotlights from me - let me know if you'd like me to cover a specific topic! And who better to officially launch this new season than Munira Hudani? Whether you call it diastaysis or die ah stasis, this is a contentious topic in postnatal rehab, and I think the conversation around Diastasis rehab is still evolving. I had the pleasure of hearing Munira present on conservative treatment of Diastasis using a bio psychosocial approach at Pelvicon last September, and her second session there was on rehab after surgical repair/abdominoplasty so I knew I had to invite her on the podcast for a chat! In this episode, we discuss: the appearance vs the experience of Diastasis integrating the psychosocial with the bio in Diastasis rehab body image & body dissatisfaction function vs aesthetics navigating post-op rehab for abdominoplasty and...what all of this means in practical terms for abdominopelvic rehab!! You can find Munira on instagram @munirahudanipt and of course I'm there too as @michellelyons_muliebrity Interested in my online courses? On this week's episode I talk umbilical hernias.A lot of postpartum women have an umbilical hernia but there seems to still be a lot of confusion about whether there is a causal link between diastasis recti and umbilical hernias. Can you repair an umbilical hernia by exercise, as some personal trainers would have you believe? Is a hernia "Just diastasis on steroids"??Should you be worried about having an umbilical hernia? Can you manage a hernia? How can they be repaired?etc. etc. After that I have a little look at this paper from Finland that you might have seen flying about online (or in the Daily Mail) which concludes that Exercise does not help you live longer. But does it though, does it really say that? Or might there be one or two other things in there that mean it's a bit more nuanced like that.Just a reminder that HPNB now only has 5 billing cycles! So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! Betsy Petry-Johnson, the founder of Mama Made Strong, is empowering postpartum mothers to feel good about their bodies after giving birth. Even months after having triplets, her belly still wasn't responding to the postpartum programs she found online. So she worked towards finding her own answers, founding Mama Made Strong to help mothers struggling with the same problems. On this episode of Redefining Movement, Betsy discusses how important it is to understand how unique our bodies are; what works for one person might not work for another. By giving people the tools and education about fitness and wellness, you empower them to find the processes that best serve them, which can often bring better results. Today I chat with Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist and colleague Munira Hudani about all things Diastasis Recti. Diastasis Recti is a hot topic online with a lot of confusion. Munira clears all the confusion and gives us the real deal and what we really need to know. Diastasis Recti, or the separation of the rectus muscles at the linea alba, is a normal adaptation during pregnancy. The healing postpartum is subjective and everyone's healing timeline is different. Listen to learn more about Diastasis from Munira. Munira Hudani, is a registered physiotherapist who graduated with a Master in Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto in 2009. She developed a passion for Pelvic Health Physiotherapy with a special interest in Women's health. Her extensive post-graduate training in pelvic floor muscle dysfunction allows her to treat urinary dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, and chronic pelvic pain. She has also helped countless women recover from pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, perineal pain, and postpartum core muscle weakness including abdominal muscle separation. “Athlete Brain” is a term I coined around 9 years ago that describes that inner-drive to do more, push harder. It's a great trait to have. It's better when we leverage it to work for us, not against us. Athlete brain is what drives us in sports and fitness, but it can be utilized and applied to any aspect of our lives. It most recently has be applicable to me as I've trained hard for BJJ Worlds, undergoing a weight cut and vigorous training schedule. But it also has applied to my business, mom life, and every aspect of my life where I want to be a high performer. As coaches, athletes need people who get them see them - especially those who experience athlete brain during seasons of pregnancy and postpartum. The waitlist is open! The pendulum swing of health and fitness is real - but what if we found the messy middle? I'm currently prepping for Jiu Jitsu Worlds and it has required me to be aware of my data as I need to make my weight class. And, for the first time in my life, I'm neutral about it. I'm not obsessing over the scale or toxic about tracking my macros. It's freeing and so nice to be in a place where I can be completely neutral about it. This is the first time in my life I have been able to do this. This conversation is an extremely nuanced one and I hope as I continue dripping out content on this topic that it can develop and expand more and more. It's okay to have your goals or not have goals. It's okay to want to fuel for performance or be in a season of doing just enough to get by. I get that and I see you. The goal is to find the middle ground where we can be neutral about whatever we choose to do with our bodies. Need flexible yet effective workouts? Get ready, because this is going to be an emotional one… The decision to have a second baby seemed like an overwhelming decision after the traumatic and extremely hard experience I had with my first birth and postpartum. But, through time, I felt ready and found what I had control over and was able to turn it into a beautiful, empowering experience. I dive into what taking control with my second birth looked like by having an elective, gentle cesarean (the first time this happened for my hospital) and how everything was so different the second time around - the birth experience and postpartum was different, Chance was different, and I was a different person. Every day I am so grateful we took the chance to have Chance - it was truly a second chance in every way. Pregnant?
