In this episode, Ceri talks about cultural curation with Salma Tuqan, Director of Nottingham Contemporary. From her early days at Art Dubai to influential roles at the V&A and beyond, Salma shares her views on how cultural institutions can evolve, adapt, and remain relevant in challenging times. Salma explores everything from collection strategies to institutional sustainability while highlighting the importance of collective effort and generosity in creating inclusive cultural spaces. KEY TAKEAWAYS Salma's leadership philosophy focuses on building collective effort, demonstrated through her work at Nottingham Contemporary where she leads a team of 70, prioritising collaborative decision making and community input. Throughout her career at the V&A, Salma challenged traditional museum structures by working to integrate Middle Eastern art across departments rather than isolating it, showing her commitment to breaking down institutional silos. Drawing from her Palestinian heritage and early exposure to diverse cultural practices, Salma approaches curation with an understanding that Western categorisations of art aren't universal. In her role at the Delfina Foundation, Salma developed innovative funding models for under resourced regions, creating pools of resources from multiple small contributions to support artists from areas like Central America. At Nottingham Contemporary, Salma prioritises long term artist relationships over one off exhibitions, allowing creative partnerships to evolve naturally from small collaborations to major shows. Rather than arriving with preset plans at new institutions, Salma's approach is to first listen and understand the existing ecosystem before developing strategies collaboratively. Through projects like "While We Wait," Salma demonstrates her commitment to considering the afterlife of exhibitions and ensuring local communities can access the art they inspire. As a director facing multiple contemporary challenges, Salma emphasises the importance of maintaining joy as a form of resistance while building solidarity networks with other cultural leaders. BEST MOMENTS "I'm a big believer in collectively working, and that's a big part of the ethos of my leadership style as well. I believe that things happen with people." "When we look around the world and with everything that's at stake, there's never been a moment where the role of institutions is as important as it is." "There's a lot of focus around the public facing aspect of institutions, particularly thinking about the artistic program and what does that mean when you're platforming artists who are talking about labour issues and simultaneously cutting the hours of the lowest paid workers." "I think joy is also a key form of resistance too." "The V&A is a huge entity, a huge institution, and I spent a lot of time developing relationships first and listening to people." "I really believe that the best work happens and is developed collectively." “Waiting” means to bind together (perhaps by twisting), i. e. collect to expect. It's an ancient biblical discipline that brings us into oneness with the One true God. My three-year-old granddaughter might call it “Boring,” but it's not; I call it, “Soaring.” The disciples waited and then the Wind came. While We Wait on the Court's Decision...New information regarding the alleged child abuse from the father has come to light, causing the judge to delay his order enforcing the father's custody of Ty and Brynlee Larson. While we wait on the results, we return to our episode from earlier this year to discuss the ins and outs of the case while we're still on our hiatus.Alienation in UtahHigh-conflict situations often include extreme behaviors and the case we'll discuss in this episode is a perfect example of extreme behaviors. In the U.S. state of Utah, a 15-year-old boy released a TikTok video detailing his family's high-conflict drama. According to the video, he had barricaded himself along with his 12-year-old sister inside a room at their mother's house in order to avoid a judge's order to reunite with their allegedly abusive father. His videos detailing this harrowing and dramatic experience have made him TikTok famous, at the very least. The issue in many (most) alienation cases is that the courts don't know who to believe. Is mom lying? Is dad lying? Are the kids lying? It's a mess for the courts to identify what's happening and a tragedy for all involved. In today's episode, Megan lists the case details and asks you, the listener, to decide who is lying and who is telling the truth. Then, Bill provides an analysis of the case and how we can use a structured approach to understanding what's going on, or at least make a best attempt at figuring it out.Links & Other Notes: RELATED NEWS ARTICLES Updated ProPublica article ProPublica article New York Post article COURSESHigh-Conflict Co-Parenting Online Course (coaching optional) BOOKS BIFF for Co-Parent Communication: Your Guide to Difficult Texts, Emails, and Social Media Posts Don't Alienate the Kids ARTICLES Alienation Update High Conflict Divorce and Separations Basics (audios) Our website: https://www.highconflictinstitute.com/ Submit a Question for Bill and Megan All of our books can be found in our online store or anywhere books are sold, including as e-books. Backchat looks at the koala wars, natural disasters and what the opposition has in store for the environment if they win. Next, we'll be chatting to Sophie Li, a researcher for the ‘While We Wait' project from the Black Dog Institute about the extended wait lists and wait times for young people to access mental health services, and just how risky these wait times can be. Join Health Affairs Insider.Welcome to While We Wait, the second series from Health Affairs Pathways. In this series, Sania Ali and Avni Kulkarni explore the mental health boarding crisis. To start, Avni and Sania introduce you to the story of Karin Broadhurst and her son who waited for 36 days in the hospital for psychiatric treatment in Boston. Long delays in care are commonplace for mental health patients who arrive in the emergency department (ED). Rather than a safety net, the ED can be a place with no progression in treatment where patients wait for change. Why? Because a mental health emergency can be an emergency that the ED isn't ready for. The Mental Health Boarding Crisis refers to the long-standing, nationwide problem of holding patients for hours, days, or even weeks in emergency departments and other observational settings because there are no available inpatient psychiatric beds in the hospital.Guests on this episode include Karin Broadhurst, Dr. Patricia Ibeziako from Boston Children's Hospital, and Massachusetts State Senator Cindy Friedman. Welcome to Bethel! Today we have the privilege of taking part in the Lord's Supper. For the message we will be looking at what Jesus has called us to do while we wait for his return. We will be reflecting on Matthew 28:16-20, While We Wait. This is a familiar passage and is often called the Great Commission. Yet in this passage, Matthew tells us that they worshipped Jesus when they saw him, but some doubted. This observation from Matthew has always puzzled me, how can they doubt Jesus after everything they had seen? We will explore that question, as well as how can we participate in the Great Commission.
They also discuss the merger of the RatingsGameMusic.com and the ill-advised wise guys podcast as they launch the Dream Vizion Network!!!!
