What considerations go into taking a 150HP engine and making it produce 600HP with huge cylinder pressures, reliably? When you want to double, triple or even octuple an engines output, at some stage you're going to find the limitations of your factory block and head castings either in dramatic fashion or via constant repairs and rebuilds for ‘minor' issues. In professional motorsport, either outcome is unacceptable.Want to learn how to EFI tune? Start with some free lessons right here: hpcdmy.co/tunebDavid Mountain of MounTune runs Andre though some of the block failures they have seen during their engine development programs where very high cylinder pressures are seen to produce large amounts of low-end torque for World RX competition engines where they are running 4 times the power the engine would produce in factory trim.Discussed are the bore size, block weight, cylinder bore centers and other design parameters they must work within depending on class regulations, how they get away with the pressures a diesel engine would run in a steel block using aluminium instead, and some of the coatings they use on bore liners and piston rings to make it all work.David also gives some great insight into cast vs billet block production including some of the advantages when it comes to casting. We also learn how 4 week to 3-month production lead times for modern 3D computer-aided design (CAD) production via software like SolidWorks compares to the 5-6 month days of 2D drawings. Interestingly, even with the use of finite element analysis (FEA) a lot of real-world experience is drawn on to ensure a balance is found between the many, many considerations and tradeoffs that every design tweak carries.Lastly, we learn how MounTune avoids any issues with cylinder sleeves dropping, why the factory design for head studs is not optimal once you start running higher pressures, Nikasil coating use and how before any tools have been lifted the CAD process can be used to ensure those regulation weight targets are hit along with avoiding any major design flaws. While some of this technology seems like magic that does the work for you, in reality without that real-world experience and knowledge bank to draw on it's useless. Just like any quality tool, the person in charge needs to know what they're doing to get the desired results.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. PORSCHE MACAN EV TEASED "The development of the all-electric Porsche Macan is finally moving from the drawing boards and computers to the real world. The Stuttgart-based automaker has just teased the EV SUV, prototypes of which are now heading outside Porsche’s proving grounds for the first time. " says Motor1: "The available photos show heavily camouflaged test cars that are heading towards Germany's public road network for real-world tests. With the new teaser images, Porsche also reaffirmed the Macan EV will be launched on the market in 2023 and will become the brand’s first model to be underpinned by the PPE electric vehicle architecture." https://www.motor1.com/news/506375/porsche-macan-ev-teased/ CHINA APPROVES NATIONAL EV BATTERY SWAP STANDARD "the country has just approved the first official swappable EV battery standard and safety guidelines, which are set to go into effect on Nov. 1, CNEVPost reported Monday. according to a statement made by Xin Guobin, vice minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, there are a few reasons, but the biggest are reduced cost to vehicle buyers, cheaper charging by charging during off-peak hours and customers being able to choose the size of battery they need on a given day." writes CNET.com: "Companies like NIO and BAIC have advanced the new battery swap standard, but it's Geely that seems to be sprinting ahead, based on a recent YouTube video showing off its 1-minute automated battery swapping station." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/china-ev-swappable-battery-standards-approved/ HARLEY-DAVIDSON IS TURNING LIVEWIRE INTO ITS OWN BRAND "A couple years ago, Harley-Davidson built its first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, to largely positive reviews. Since we now live in a world created by constant brand consultant input, however, the company has announced they are branching out LiveWire into an entire separate electric motorcycle sub-brand" says Gear Patrol: "Harley-Davidson says LiveWire will "draw on its DNA as an agile disruptor from the lineage of Harley-Davidson," whatever that means. Per Harley, the new LiveWire entity will have a virtual headquarters paired with "initial hubs" in Silicon Valley and Harley-Davidson's home, Milwaukee. Livewire will launch its first new branded electric motorcycle on July 8th. LiveWire will target new buyers in a younger urban market. That's a substantially different buyer from the people who purchase Harley-Davidson's bread-and-butter touring bikes." https://www.gearpatrol.com/cars/motorcycles/a36395359/harley-davidson-livewire-brand/ SUBARU’S FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE IS CALLED THE SOLTERRA "For Subaru diehards holding out for an electric vehicle, the wait is almost over. The Japanese automaker just announced new details about its first-ever EV, which is set to hit the streets in 2022. Subaru will call its first EV the Solterra, a fitting name for a brand synonymous with outdoor adventures and you know, the sun and the Earth. Also fittingly, Subaru’s first full-fledged EV will be an SUV that ships with the manufacturer’s well-regarded all-wheel-drive capabilities." writes Techcrunch: "The Solterra is built on a new platform the company is developing in partnership with Toyota, which the latter company will use for its impossibly named bZ4X crossover. Subaru has only released two teaser images so far, but given that the new SUV will share DNA with the Toyota bZ4X, Subaru’s offering will likely look like a toned-down, less aggressively styled version of Toyota’s forthcoming futuristic electric crossover." https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/11/subaru-solterra-ev-2022/ ELECTRIC SEVEN DUE IN 2023 AS FIRST CATERHAM EV "Caterham is working to safeguard the future of the Seven in the face of looming homologation and legislative hurdles – and is set to launch its landmark first EV in the coming years. the priority is to ensure that any electric version of the diminutive two-seater “rides and handles like a Caterham”." syas Autocar: "the ‘EV Seven’ will be developed with a focus on keeping weight down in an effort to preserve the model’s trademark agility and pace. The suspension geometry and other aspects of the chassis will be recalibrated to mitigate the extra heft of the battery and electric motors, for example, and it will go without the weighty associated systems that are common on mainstream EVs, such as regenerative braking. a racing version would need to be equipped with rapid charging or an “interchangeable battery” but the road car – which, like the current Seven, will be geared towards occasional use – is less likely to receive these technologies." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-seven-due-2023-first-caterham-ev STAR-STUDDED LINE-UP TO CONTEST FIA RX2E DEMO A legendary line-up of rallycross talent will go head-to-head during a one-off FIA RX2e Championship demonstration competition at the upcoming RallyX Nordic meeting at Höljes. The event will provide an opportunity to see the cutting-edge electric vehicles – which are set to face off in the first-ever FIA electric rallycross championship this season – race wheel-to-wheel. Multiple World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm will join the likes of World Rallycross title-winners Johan Kristoffersson and Timmy Hansen in the inaugural Superteam Challenge while RX2e test driver Oliver Eriksson, who is a double RX2 champion and 2020 RallyX Nordic Supercar title-winner, is also in the mix. RX Lites title-winners Kevin Hansen and Kevin Eriksson are also in the talent pool while World RX race winners Andreas Bakkerud and Sebastian Eriksson complete the line-up of participating drivers. The electric vehicles, which generate 250kW (335bhp) of power and up to 510Nm torque, will be showcased in four heats and two finals as the world’s best off-road racers do battle at Höljes. QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power. I have never heard anything like a 20% rate of EV drivers being unhappy with electric. Would you ever go back? Yes, No and tell me why! How does a former graphic designer get to travel the world and talk about motorsport for a living? Well, to answer that question we sat down for a chat with the only ex-designer-come-commentator that was free the other week – Andrew Coley. The only person to commentate on every World Rallycross event held to date and part of the Extreme E team for the inaugural season, he oozes motorsport. His ‘mega' style of describing what is happening for viewers is completely unique – you're on the edge of your seat even if there's not much happening in the race. We sat down with the enigmatic rallycross nutter to discuss his career, the current state of WorldRX, the future of rallying and how it all fits into the virtual world and esports. What camera angles does he use and how is life adapting from controller to a steering wheel? Watch to find out. MEEEEEGA!!!!!
Show #834 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 9th June 2020. OSLO HAS THE MOST EVS PER CAPITA IN THE WORLD "Oslo, Norway's capital, is now reportedly the world leader in terms of electric vehicles per capita (along with the country's second-largest city, Bergen). This comes as no surprise since Norway leads the way in EV adoption, and its capital has set itself a very ambitious target to be near-zero emissions by 2030." says InsideEVs: "Currently, around 18 percent of all passenger cars operating in the city are fully electric, 9 percent are plug-in hybrids and 5 percent are regular hybrids. And this shift isn’t only in the passenger car segment; electric vans have also gone up in popularity too, with 23 percent of all new vans bought in Q1 2020 being fully electric." https://insideevs.com/news/432911/oslo-most-evs-per-capita-globally ELON MUSK ABOUT TO GET ANOTHER $1.8 BILLION PAYDAY FROM TESLA "Musk's pay package, approved by Tesla shareholders in 2018, doesn't pay him any salary or cash bonuses. Instead, it laid out a plan that could eventually give him 20.3 million stock options over the course of 10 years, in 12 equal blocks of 1.7 million options, as long as the company hits a series of operational and market value goals." according to CNN: "The company's share price has continued to climb steadily, rising more than 70% since Musk received the previous options grant. That gives the company a current market value of $258.6 billion, and a six-month average of $138.6 billion. That new market value is closer to the next target than it might appear. Tesla shares need only to stay at this level for the next two weeks to hit the six-month average of $150 billion. Musk has yet to exercise his options." https://www.msn.com/en-us/finance/companies/elon-musk-about-to-get-another-2418-billion-payday-from-tesla/ar-BB16Aqz9 MUSK SAYS TESLA IS ‘VERY CLOSE’ TO DEVELOPING FULLY AUTONOMY VEHICLES "Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc. is “very close” to developing fully autonomous vehicles and could work out the basics of that technology as soon as this year, he said in a prerecorded video played during the World AI Conference in Shanghai." according to Bloomberg: "Musk reiterated that the electric vehicle maker has solved most of the essential challenges toward achieving Level 5 autonomy, or a fully self-driven automobile that needs no human behind the wheel. The Tesla and SpaceX chief was reaffirming a goal first expressed in 2019." https://www.msn.com/en-us/finance/companies/musk-says-tesla-is-e2-80-98very-close-e2-80-99-to-developing-fully-autonomy-vehicles/ar-BB16w6q4 TESLA IS NOT AHEAD IN LITHIUM-ION BATTERY TECH, SAYS AUDI CEO "Over the years, Tesla has been hard at work improving its batteries, and as the company heads towards its highly anticipated Battery Day event, it is becoming more and more evident that the electric car maker is one of, if not the, leader in lithium ion batteries for electric cars. " says TEslarati: "That is, of course, if one does not ask Audi CEO Markus Duesmann. In a recent talk with German magazine Focus.de, the Audi CEO...stated that he does not see Tesla being ahead in lithium ion battery tech at all. With this, it would not be long before Germany’s automakers catch up. “We’re catching up with seven-mile boots,” Duesmann said. "Interestingly enough, it will only be a matter of time before Tesla manages to capitalize on Germany’s car making mastery. The electric car maker is currently building Gigafactory Berlin, a facility that is expected to start operations next year by producing the Model Y." https://www.teslarati.com/audi-ceo-tesla-not-ahead-battery-tech/ BMW UNVEIL ITS HOTLY ANTICIPATED IX3 EV NEXT WEEK "The hotly anticipated BMW iX3, the company’s first electric vehicle that’s part of its core product line up, will be officially unveiled next week. On July 14 at 10AM CEST, the German automaker will take the covers off the EV and it’ll be the first time the public or press has seen it for real, CarScoops reports." according to The Next Web: "The iX3 has so far been reported to have a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 282 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’ll also have a 74 kWh battery pack capable of powering the car for approximately 273 miles (440 km). Early last month, the Bavarian marque announced that it had already started production of the vehicle, which is being made in China. The first customer deliveries are expected later this year." https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/07/10/heres-how-to-watch-bmw-ix3s-unveiling-happening-next-week-july-14/ STOHL TO LEAD HISTORIC DEBUT OF ELECTRIC RALLYCROSS CAR "An electric car will race in rallycross for the first time this weekend, as former world rally driver Manfred Stohl is set to compete in an electric Ford Fiesta at a Hungarian Rallycross Championship event." says motorsport.com: "Stohl will compete at the Kakucs circuit in a Fiesta ElectRX, created by his STARD research and development firm, the kind of car that will be run in the World Rallycross Championship’s Projekt E electric support series from this year. With the Fiesta’s electric kit producing 450kW (the equivalent to 613 horsepower) and 1100Nm, the event will give the first clear indication of an electric car’s performance against conventional two-litre turbo charged, 600bhp rallycross Supercars. While the Projekt E series will be a standalone single-powertrain category within the World RX structure, World RX will adopt electric cars into the top category in 2022, with electric cars pitched against existing ICE machines." https://www.motorsport.com/rallycross/news/stohl-electric-ford-debut-hungary/4828329/?ic_source=home-page-widget&ic_medium=widget&ic_campaign=widget-6 NISSAN LEAF TRIALS WITH V2G TECHNOLOGY IN AUSTRALIA "Nissan’s vehicle-to-grid technology has arrived in Australia. With a government trial, called Realising Electric Vehicle Services (REVS), Nissan is preparing to launch V2G technology to the Australian market later this year." writes electrive.com: "The REVS project will see 51 Nissan Leaf EVs deployed across the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) ahead of the commercial roll-out planned by Nissan. The ACT government will operate 50 Nissan Leaf electric cars in a trial capacity, using their batteries to stabilise energy supply to the power grid." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/09/nissan-leaf-trials-with-v2g-technology-to-start-in-australia/ FORD TRANSIT PHEV SWITCHES TO EV MODE IN CITIES AUTOMATICALLY "Ford has introduced a new automatic electric mode for the Transit Custom plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which uses geofencing to ensure the van operates with zero-emissions in cities. " says CommercialFleet website: "Using live location data, the Transit Custom PHEV vans will automatically switch to electric drive mode whenever they enter predefined areas such as congestion and low‑emission zones. Vehicle operators can also create custom “green zones” to encourage low-emission driving around locations such as schools, playgrounds and warehouses." https://www.commercialfleet.org/news/van-news/2020/07/08/ford-transit-phev-switches-to-ev-mode-in-cities-automatically ELECTRIC SCOOTER CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS 2020 CAN ALWAYS GET WILDER "With electric scooters as numerous and troublesome as tribbles, it's amazing no one thought of a professional race series. That chasm in the market has now been filled by the Electric Scooter Championship, also known as the eSC and the eSkootr Championship. " according to Autoblog: "The inaugural eSC season is planned for 2021 "in the hearts of major cities" around the world, with a two-pronged raison d'être that wants to "make international motorsport more accessible, affordable and sustainable than ever before," and that wants to help cities by "[promoting] the cost, convenience and sustainability benefits of micromobility within the rapidly changing electric mobility landscape. With this series, we have created a superfast race machine capable of speeds greater than 100km/h, that can accelerate faster than a road car, and which will reach 100km/h in only a few seconds." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/09/electric-scooter-racing-esc-eskootr-championship/ [mention for Premium Partners] You can listen to all 833 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. TESLA IS HAVING TROUBLE SCALING THE MODEL Y "The Model Y went into production just before the pandemic forced Tesla to shut down its Fremont factory. Now that the factory is back to work, Tesla had hoped to ramp up Model Y production as well. But not everything has gone to plan. And CEO Elon Musk is once again taking to the factory floor to see if he can fix problems himself." Says Jalopnik: "It’s always unclear whether Elon taking to the factory floors actually helps—it seems distracting, if nothing else, if you’re trying to focus on your work and the billionaire CEO of the company is wandering around observing things. But whether it’s a publicity stunt or not—or maybe Elon’s just bored—these factory tours always just seem to come and go, and production rolls on." As per Bloomberg: "Tesla Inc.’s Elon Musk told employees the electric-car maker is having issues boosting output of its new Model Y crossover and said he’ll be walking the assembly line on a weekly basis to troubleshoot production snafus." Elon in an email on Saturday: “It is extremely important for us to ramp up Model Y production and minimize rectification needs. I want you to know that it really makes a difference to Tesla right now. Model Y, especially GA (stands for General Assembly), is the top priority for both production and manufacturing engineering. GA4 (stands for General Assembly Line 4) is also top priority for facility improvements. For those working in GA4, thank you for bearing with tough conditions. Will get better fast. I will be walking the line personally every week. We are doing reasonably well with S, X, and 3, but there are production and supply chain ramp challenges with Model Y, as is always the case with new products." Teslarati reports: "The current production line where the Model Y is built is GA4, which is an outdoor tent that sits next to the Fremont facility. Previously, the Model 3 was constructed on this line and was eventually built 5,000 sedans a week. Much like the Model Y’s current roadblocks, the Model 3 also encountered problems at the beginning of its eventually-successful ramp up stage." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-is-having-trouble-scaling-the-model-y-1843969100 TESLA MODEL Y DEMAND MIGHT BE WEAK "It's possible Tesla faces weaker than expected demand for the Model Y SUV as the company now includes the vehicle in its referral program." Says Roadshow by CNET: "Seeing the Model Y show up so soon after production and deliveries started is, frankly, kind of surprising. The whole concept is to reward the Tesla owner referring a new buyer and each receives 1,000 miles worth of free Supercharger station use. Then, hopefully, enough current owners flip new buyers into Teslas to help create more demand. In contrast to the Model Y's very early addition to the referral program, the Model 3 didn't show up until one year after deliveries started" https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/tesla-model-y-demand-might-be-weak-judging-by-automakers-latest-move/ar-BB15g5qx?li=BBnb4R5 LORDSTOWN MOTORS TO UNVEIL ENDURANCE ELECTRIC TRUCK THIS MONTH "Lordstown Motors is making good on its promise to unveil the Endurance electric pickup truck this summer, announcing that its maiden product will be introduced during a company meeting the week of June 22, video of which will be released to the public by month’s end." Reports Autoblog: "Integration work has also begun on areas like the body shop, general assembly, motor lines and paint shop, with demolition of around 200,000 square feet to make space for lines to build the battery and motors. The Detroit Free Press recently reported that Lordstown currently employs around 70 people, mostly engineers, and including a team of 20 who work in a design studio in Ford’s backyard in Dearborn, Mich. making clay models of future vehicles, with the remainder working on retooling the plant. The goal is to make 30 pre-production versions of the Endurance by December." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/09/lordstown-motors-endurance-unveiling-june/ GM CEO MARY BARRA PREDICTS MASS ELECTRIFICATION WILL TAKE DECADES "Mary Barra, the firm's CEO, conceded that battery-powered cars won't fully replace their gasoline-burning counterparts for several decades. She stressed the shift is ongoing, but she hinted it will be slower than many assume." Says Autoblog. "Leadership Live with David Rubenstein," a talk show aired by Bloomberg Television: "We believe the transition will happen over time, It will happen in a little bit longer period, but it will happen" https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/09/mary-barra-gm-electric-vehicle-timeline-decades/ TESLA V3 SUPERCHARGER TEST "We know Tesla's new V3 Superchargers can deliver up to 250 kW to Model 3's, but until now, we hadn't recorded a charging session ourselves to see exactly what the charging curve looks like." Says Tom Molougney for InsideEVs: "I had the perfect opportunity to do so this weekend, as I was conducting a 70-mph range test on my 2019 Tesla Model 3 and would be draining the battery down to zero. There's only one V3 Supercharger site open in New Jersey, and it's right off the NJ Turnpike. During the charging session, the vehicle reached 250 kW at the 5% SOC point and held it until the SOC reached 24%. That's similar to how Porsche manages the Taycan's charging curve, as it too begins to ramp down the power once the car is at 25% SOC. While charging on the V3 Supercharger, I reached 50% SOC in only thirteen minutes, and the car was still accepting 120 kW at that point. It took 28 minutes to reach 80% and the charge rate has slowed down to 54 kW at that point. Had I continued to let the car charge to 100% it would have taken longer for the last 20% than it took to get to 80%. With the COVID-19 pandemics and MG’s silence, we thought it was going to be postponed. Yet, the guys at Cochespias.net found Chinese patent images that reveal the production version of the E-Motion." Says MSN: "With that, the new electric coupe front end lost character and looks very much like an Aston Martin. The dashboard image allows us to see that the E-Motion will have a giant heads-up display. Around the cluster, flat surfaces suggest a massive screen for controlling the infotainment system, air conditioning, and other car functions – either that or a bizarre design. If the car can still preserve the 500 km (311 mi) of range and the acceleration time of less than 4 seconds the MG E-Motion may repeat the ZS EV success." https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/mg-e-motion-has-its-production-version-revealed-by-patent-images/ar-BB15fdP1 BMW READY TO START PRODUCTION OF IX3 AT CHINESE PLANT "BMW's iX3 is scheduled to enter production in late summer, the automaker said Tuesday. The battery-electric version of the popular X3 crossover SUV will be built exclusively at a plant in Shenyang, China, which is run by a joint venture between BMW and local partner Brilliance." Reports Motor Authority: "The plant is currently building pre-production iX3s but will soon make the switch to customer examples. Both the iX3 and regular X3 will be built on the same line. BMW will start deliveries of the iX3 in China and Europe later this year but doesn't plan to sell it in the United States. Instead, U.S. customers seeking an electric BMW crossover will have to wait until the larger iNext arrives in 2021.The production version is expected to come with 74 kilowatt-hours of battery capacity, which is lower than what rivals are already packing. For example, the Audi E-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace come with with 95- and 90-kwh batteries, respectively. It means the iX3's range could be considerably lower than 200 miles if measured by the EPA, which could be one of the reasons BMW has decided not to sell the iX3 here." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1117634_bmw-ready-to-start-production-of-ix3-at-chinese-plant ELECTRIC WRX KIT COULD MAKE 2021 COMPETITION DEBUT "Austrian firm Kreisel won the tender to produce and supply the electric kits for World RX's revised electric strategy last October, but the introduction of electric cars at the sport's top level has been postponed a year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic." Says motorsport.com: "The four-wheel drive, twin-motor 500 kW kit will be built into a Skoda Fabia R5 chassis (called the Fabia REX), in a collaboration with the Baumschlager Rallye Racing squad run by three-time Janner Rally winner Raimund Baumschlager. The kit will run a single-speed transmission, produced by British firm Xtrac. While the 52.65kWh battery's safety features will be the same as those used in the World Rally Championship's hybrid switch for 2022, for which Kreisel will also be involved in supplying together with Compact Dynamics GmbH, the WRC machines will not use the same battery as the World RX Supercars" They said: ""We have our own charging system which makes it possible for us to charge the battery in 18 minutes, so this means in a normal service period in a conventional rally of 20 - 30 mins, you can recharge the full battery" https://www.motorsport.com/world-rx/news/electric-world-rallycross-kit-2021-debut/4803725/?utm_campaign=RSS-ALL&utm_content=www&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=RSS&utm_term=News GERMAN PUBLIC ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING NETWORK GROWS 60% "Germany's public network for electric vehicles expanded by 10,000 charging spots, an increase of nearly 60 percent, in the last year, the country's electricity lobby said on Monday." According to Automotive News Europe: "As part of the country's stimulus package unveiled last week, 2.5 billion euros ($2.8 billion) have been earmarked specifically to build out electric charging spots and battery cell technology. Around 280,000 electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids are currently registered in Germany. Existing public infrastructure can cater for 440,000 cars." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/german-public-electric-car-charging-network-grows-60 UK POWER NETWORKS LAUNCHES EV CHARGER SURGERY FOR COUNCILS "UK Power Networks says its new electric vehicle charging surgery for local councils could save them millions of pounds by matching chargepoints with network capacity." according to The Energyst: "UKPN said its connections team undertakes a detailed analysis of where a local authority plans to install charge points, and suggests the most cost-effective alternative locations."
