Based in Fermanagh, he has spent decades earning respect as a rally driver, a motorsport preparation expert, and a mentor for young talent. Among the many drivers he guided, none felt his influence more strongly than Mark Fisher. Gerry played a quiet but significant role in shaping Mark's early approach to the sport—helping to refine his technique, build his confidence, and instil the discipline that would eventually carry him onto the international stage. He has tutored young drivers all the way up to competing in the World Rally Championship, and Mark's rise remains one of the clearest examples of Gerry's ability to spot potential and nurture it with care. Whether he's competing or working behind the scenes, Gerry truly represents the spirit of grassroots rallying.

Persistence. Talent. Desire. Results. And an unerring belief and love for what you do. Hayden Paddon is back in the World Rally Championship, eight years after last competing at the highest level of the sport. The Kiwi peddler, along with long-time collaborator and navigator John Kennard, has been given a third share of Hyundai's third entry into next year's global championship. Thierry Neuville and Adrien Fourmaux will contest every round of the championship, with Dani Sordo, Esapekka Lappi, and Hayden Paddon sharing the third car. Hayden will kick off the season in Monte Carlo next year, the first round of the 2026 Championship, and one of the most iconic rallies on the calendar. Since he departed the world scene not on the best terms with Hyundais world rally team, Hayden has not stopped developing his craft, or the cars he campaigns in in rallies across the world. No sulking, no what ifs, just full focus on the task at hand. Speaking with Hayden a year ago after he won the European Rally Championship for the second consecutive year, as it happens, when he won the first of the two, he became the first non-European rally driver to do so. Hayden told me he believed the WRC ship had well and truly sailed and he was looking at his current campaigns and the development of his primary interest outside of the driver's seat, the electric Hyundai Kona EV. This is pioneering work in the electric rally car space. Although Hayden's tenure with Hyundai's international rally arm faltered, he stuck with the manufacturer here in New Zealand, showing loyalty to the brand. That, along with keeping his sword razor sharp by competing at the highest level he could, he has reignited his rally career. Persistence. Talent. Desire. Results. And an unerring belief and love for what you do. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The end result went begging for Mārtiņš Sesks in Latvia, but it doesn't matter - the statement he has made to the entire World Rally Championship service park is emphatic. The question now: what happens next?M-Sport team principal Richard Millener has already said he'd love to have Sesks back in the car, but how feasible is that? If Sesks can't make an M-Sport reunion work, what other options does he have? Could there potentially be room at Hyundai with its third-driver strategy for 2025 coming under review, or does he need to wait until a new manufacturer signals interest in the WRC and needs a driver it can mould around its project? But Sesks wasn't the only talking point: what about Sébastien Ogier? Could we really see him commit to the thing he always said he wouldn't ever do - doing effectively a full season again and potentially chasing that record-equalling ninth world title? Then there's the road order debate - does a qualifying stage need to be considered again? And has Toyota got to revise its team order strategy, with Takamoto Katsuta stealing points from Elfyn Evans on the powerstage?Join in all the discussion as Alasdair Lindsay, Colin Clark and George Donaldson dissect all the major talking points from Rally Latvia 2024 on SPIN, The Rally Pod.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
