Huge news out of Camden Yards, as the Orioles have signed 31 year old first baseman Pete Alonso to a 5 year, $155 million dollar contract! After years of talk from this front office about opening up David Rubenstein's checkbook to spend money on the free agent market (and intervening swings and misses on big targets), the O's have finally landed their white whale (or, polar bear) in the longtime Mets masher. How did all of this finally come together for an organization that had become synonymous with disappointment in free agency? How does Alonso project to fit into this young clubhouse, and their aspirations to return to the top of the AL East? What does the future hold for current players that a move like this no doubt affects? The guys get into all of that, and plenty more on tonight's show. The delicious pizza at Pizza John's brings all of our friends together to talk baseball in Essex. Our MLB insider Luke Jones and legendary sports cartoonist Ricig join Nestor on the Maryland Crab Cake Tour to take a deep dive on the everything Baltimore Orioles offseason. From the leadership of Mike Elias and the hiring of Craig Albernaz to the expectations of spending hundreds of millions of David Rubenstein and Michael Arougheti's money before Valentine's Day, it's always baseball season here. Earlier this week Jerry Coleman asked David Rubenstein about a potential payroll increase for the Orioles. The owner said there are no financial constraints and they will do whatever it takes to field a great team. Are you buying that?
The guys fire up the livestream to at long last discuss some Orioles baseball following the dawn of a new era at Camden Yards. The 2025 season was one that was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, from a miserable start in the opening few months, the in-season firing of Brandon Hyde as a result of it, and the painful (and ultimately unsuccessful) attempt at clawing their way back into playoff contention. Since then, the O's saw a division rival once again represent the AL in the World Series in a seven game set that was won by a Dodgers team who look miles ahead of where Baltimore needs to be in just about every facet of the game. They've now hired a new manager in Craig Albernaz who looks and sounds every bit the part of the guy who can get this group of talent back to where they need to be; but as we've learned in Birdland this calendar year, talk is cheap. In Albernaz' opening press conference, he, Mike Elias, and David Rubenstein said all the right things regarding what it will take to turn things around. Can they do it? Only time will tell. As a wise man once said at the end of another extremely difficult Orioles season, "you just... don't... know." Thanks as always for tuning in, and we'll be back at you very soon! David Rubenstein says the Orioles won't have any financial constraints this offseason. Nolan McGraw is responding by saying "show me." History shows that those who try to find bargains and value are left in the dust while the top ten spenders routinely make the World Series.
Do you know who Catie Griggs is and what she does? How about Sashi Brown? Well, they are the millionaires who run your "local" sports franchise as the "caretaker" for billionaires David Rubenstein, Michael Arougheti and Steve Bisciotti. The Orioles were one of the most banged up teams in baseball this past summer, but that was just one piece of their dysfunctional puzzle. Bob and Nolan aren't happy to hear David Rubenstein harp on the same injury talking points.
This year's World Series matchup featured two teams that ranked top five in spending. Will the Orioles see a significant increase in their payroll for 2026? Rich Dubroff is awaiting David Rubenstein's upcoming comments.
Harvard University President Alan M. Garber joins David Rubenstein to discuss the university's decision to sue the federal government over the freezing of approximately $600 million in research funding. He also addresses Harvard's large endowment and recent changes to admissions policies following the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action. Garber explains how Harvard handled campus protests related to the conflict in the Middle East, the uncertainty around visas for foreign students and the importance of having different viewpoints on campus. Join Bridgewater founder and #1 New York Times-bestselling author and investor Ray Dalio for an urgent conversation about America's role in the global economy and debt — and his new book, How Countries Go Broke: The Big Cycle. Ray Dalio, one of the preeminent investors of our time, anticipated the 2008 global financial crisis — and he has deep concerns about US government debt. Does government debt threaten our wellbeing? Could the US really go broke? Where do we stand? In his new book, How Countries Go Broke, Dalio answers these questions with a clear-eyed perspective on US financial policy and global investment, laying out a remarkably simple proposal for what the US can do to prevent a debt crisis. In a special conversation, hear Dalio discuss the risks of big government debt, why the US is struggling to catch up with China, what it means for our collective economic future, and more. Fan Favorite: This episode originally aired on January 11, 2022. If you've been following me for any length of time, you've probably heard about the years I spent chasing money - and how it left me emotionally bankrupt. Don't get me wrong - money is a powerful force. It gives you the ability to close your eyes, imagine something that you want to create, and then open your eyes and actually be able to go out there and do it. However, I've also found that people have wildly different opinions on money, how we should relate to it, and how it affects our levels of happiness and fulfillment. But what do people who have really mastered the game of money have to say about it? What constitutes a wealthy life? How should we define success? How do we create and monetize long-term value for those we serve? Todays' episode of Impact Theory answers those questions, and many more.
