Kia is offering substantial discounts on the 2026 EV9, including $10,000 in customer cash and even larger discounts at some dealers. CATL unveiled its TECTRANS II commercial vehicle battery platform, designed to make heavy-duty electric trucks easier to integrate while offering up to 621 miles of claimed range, megawatt charging, and a long service life. GM is showing off a new infotainment interface on upcoming gas-powered Sierra and Silverado models that puts Apple CarPlay or Android Auto alongside vehicle controls, raising the possibility that the setup could eventually make its way to GM's EVs. Tesla has added insurance estimates to its vehicle order page, including a comparison of estimated rates with and without FSD usage. Tesla is also trying to speed up Supercharger construction with its new pre-assembled “Accordion” Supercharger system, which arrives at the site largely wired and ready to unfold into place. Episode 8 of Watts & Wheels – TechCentral's electric motoring show – opens with William Kelly on his soapbox, clipboard in hand, and a simple demand: keep left, pass right. Too many South African drivers, he argues, treat the left indicator as an invitation to be overtaken rather than a signal of intent, and lane discipline would save the country time, fuel and a great deal of frustration, he opines. Duncan McLeod wonders where enforcement of that sort ends – cameras and artificial intelligence deciding when you should pull over? – which leads neatly into the episode's main interview. In episode 8, William and Duncan get stuck into: • An interview with Dillan Fernando, CEO of Tracker, on what a vehicle-tracking business becomes when cars generate far more data than a stolen-vehicle recovery unit ever needed – and what happens once AI is pointed at it. • The grid maths – William sets a total Eskom grid figure of roughly 47GW against a national fleet of about 13 million vehicles, of which only some 10 000 can be plugged in at all. His conclusion: EV charging is nowhere near being an Eskom problem, and on current trajectories most of us will not live to see the day it is. • EV education in South Africa – how much do buyers actually understand about what they are being sold, and whose job is it to tell them? • Volvo gets Gemini – Google's assistant has begun rolling out to Volvo cars, starting in the US and reaching models going back to 2020. Fixed voice commands give way to something closer to conversation: brainstorming a holiday, finding a decent coffee stop on the route, summarising an incoming text and dictating a reply in another language, or simply asking for something calming on the stereo. • Tesla lands in Africa – in Casablanca – Morocco, not South Africa, is where Tesla has put its African base, with a corporate presence in Casablanca and a Supercharger network built out since 2021 across Casablanca, Tangier, Rabat, Fez, Marrakesh and Agadir. Its cars still cannot be bought through official channels here. Is Africa a sleeping EV giant? The hosts are unconvinced. • Trade deals and battery minerals – India signs a motor industry trade deal with the EU while, at home, Itac proposes bringing EV battery minerals into the list of qualifying standard materials under APDP2, at a standard value added rate of 50% against the usual 25%, provided they originate in Sacu or the SADC region. William's question: is anyone actually going to build the batteries? • Mad Chinese cars – BYD's Tang and the Denza B8, plus XPeng's GX, the brand's first three-row luxury SUV. • A moment of silence – too soon, Honda? The hosts mark the company's retreat from its electric vehicle strategy. Also in the mix is the new metal heading for South African showrooms. The Jaecoo J5 and the iCaur are on the way, along with the BYD Atto 2 DM-i, a plug-in hybrid whose entry-level version carries a 7.8kWh Blade battery – a remarkably small pack for a car you are expected to plug in. It arrives loaded with equipment, which prompts a broader observation: Chinese brands have spoiled South African buyers so quickly that the goalposts have already moved. To contrast all that smoothness with something built for a purpose, there is the new Thula – the locally engineered electric game viewer that featured in episode 5 – back for another look. The trend matters because government figures published in 2024 found 40% of UK households have no access to off-street parking, leaving a large share of the market dependent on public charging and highly sensitive to the cost of every kilowatt-hour.PRINCE AL WALEED RAISES LUCID STAKEPrince Al Waleed bin Talal's investment office bought just over 19 million Lucid shares, lifting his stake to about 5% according to an SEC filing, with the prince saying he bought when Lucid's market cap was below $2 billion following speculation — since denied by Lucid — about bankruptcy or a take-private deal. This widens the cost gap for the 32% of households without driveways, intensifying calls for equalised charging taxes.ABARTH 500E GETS UK GRANT  The Abarth 500e now qualifies for a £3,750 UK government grant, reducing its price to £24,245 and making the electric hot hatch more accessible. The incentive aims to broaden its appeal beyond early adopters since its 2023 launch.ILLINOIS EV REBATES RETURN ON AUGUST 1  Illinois will relaunch its EV rebate program on August 1 with $14 million in funding, offering up to $4,000 for low-income buyers and $2,000 standard rebates. The program runs until funds are exhausted, with strict eligibility rules including price caps, dealer requirements, and no leases.USED EVS KEEP MORE BATTERY THAN FEARED  A Swedish study of nearly 10,000 tests found many EVs retain 95–97% battery capacity after over 100,000 km, challenging common concerns about degradation. Models like the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona performed best, while battery chemistry and supplier differences also significantly affected long-term health.

Electric logistics firm Zeem Solutions celebrated some good reliability news at ACT Expo last week, after its commercial charging depot at LAX hit a huge milestone, surpassing 350,000 successful charging sessions as one of the highest-throughput charging facilities in the US. "What the 350,000-session milestone really measures is reliability at scale," says Rick Eckert, Vice President of Operations at Zeem Solutions. "Every one of those sessions represents a fleet vehicle that needed to get back on the road on time. The fact that we have been able to deliver that consistently, across an increasingly diverse set of vehicles and duty cycles, is what gives our customers the confidence to expand their electric fleets and gives us the confidence to invest in the next generation of depots." Zeem's message has consistently been that that reliability isn't just about making sure EV chargers work when you plug your car into them (and, for the record, Zeem's do, with the first 4 months of 2026 delivering more than 75,000 charging sessions and dispensing a whopping 3.2 million kWhs of electricity). To Zeem, reliability includes knowing the industries your customers work in and understanding what your partners need. To that end, Zeem is bringing an unprecedented level of operational expertise, with contracted and pre-scheduled charging sessions allowing Zeem to maintain a 98% charger uptime to accommodate a mix of light-duty, medium-duty, and class 8 vehicles on one site, while also providing 24/7/365 valets to rotate out charged units, perform visual inspections on fleet vehicles, and provide regular maintenance and as-needed repairs. Parking, security, and cleaning services are also included. On today's episode, we discuss real-world Tesla road-trip experiences, comparing Glenn's smoother 600-mile journey with James's cross-country drive to Minnesota in a Model Y — and what it reveals about the current state of EV infrastructure and long-distance travel. The hosts share how Full Self-Driving handled winding two-lane Arkansas highways, construction zones, and Supercharger routing. They also dig into the practical realities of range and charging. James's Model Y delivers roughly half the range of their Honda, and charging takes about four times longer than filling up a gasoline vehicle. With charging stations still few and far between — sometimes spaced beyond the car's comfortable range — drivers often overcharge to build in a safety buffer, adding significant time to the trip. In contrast, gasoline stations are in nearly every town, and if you do run out, a local farmer with a five-gallon can can usually get you moving again. With an EV, you're calling for a tow. James said the Tesla is by far the best option for local driving and probably preferable for short day trips. He added he would take the Model Y to Dallas or Houston before driving the Honda. However, this is exactly what Tesla needs to fix before it becomes a truly viable cross-country option. From there, the conversation shifts into legal and political territory. The hosts discuss James Comey's long history of high-profile prosecutions — from Martha Stewart to Donald Trump — and float the idea that Trump may not care as much about securing a conviction as he does about making Comey experience what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the legal system. For Trump, they suggest, a conviction would simply be lagniappe. They also explore how simply being charged — with all the lawyers, court dates, and expense — can make “the process the punishment,” along with jurisdiction choices and other ongoing cases. The hosts react to news that a high-profile murder trial will be fully televised, and they close with an aviation segment analyzing a tragic Frontier Airlines incident in which a ground worker was fatally ingested into a running engine, raising serious questions about safety protocols and investigation procedures.

On this really quick episode of Quick Charge, Slate Auto's Chief Commercial Officer Jeremy Snyder believes his new truck is the right size and price to drive fleet adoption AND fandom. We only had a few minutes with Jeremy, and Slate is nearly ready for prime time! Slate Auto had a well-optioned, work-focused version of their upcoming compact electric pickup on display at ACT Expo 2026. The preproduction truck was fitted with ladder racks and wrapped in white vinyl, and some of the staff on hand even teased a utility-style "van" body. Regardless of which bodystyle you choose, Slate will offer its affordable trucks with a choice of two US-made SK On nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery packs – the base model gets 52.7 kWh and a 150 mile range while more upscale trucks get an 84.3 kWh battery with up to 240 miles of range. The two battery will be the only Slate option that gets installed at the factory (the rest of the available options will be installed by the "dealer" at the point of sale). On this really quick episode of Quick Charge, Greenlane announces it's taking its heavy-duty EV truck charging network beyond California, and bringing diesel-level charging access straight into one of the busiest freight corridors in Texas. Greenlane CEO Patrick McDonald-King took to the ACT Expo stage today to follow up the company's completed expansion plans into the Lone Star State with news that the company had put pen to paper on deals with shipping and logistics firms Einride and Nevoya.
