On today's troubling episode of Quick Charge, we explore all the troubles befalling Tesla (and TSLA stock) in the month April – with top executives fleeing the ship, demand plummeting, sales slipping, government incentives at home and abroad under threat, and a raft of receipts brought on by an OpenAI lawsuit hitting the brand, it's already a bad month for Elon ... and there's still 20 more days to go! None of this even touches on the $43 million "backlogged" rebate scandal Tesla's facing in Canada that's being blamed for people's negative attitudes about the brand (ha!) or the fact that neither the long-promised Roadster 2.0 or the Tesla Semi will see production anytime this year, either. We're taking a look at some of the recent hydrogen failures of 2025 – including nine-figure product cancellations in the US and Korea, a series of simultaneous bus failures in Poland, and European executives, experts, and economists calling for EU governments to ditch hydrogen and focus on the deployment of a more widespread electric trucking infrastructure. On today's tariff-tastic episode of Quick Charge, we've got tariffs! Big ones, small ones, crazy ones, and fake ones – but whether or not you agree with the Trump tariffs coming into effect tomorrow, one thing is absolutely certain: they are going to change the price you pay for your next car ... and that price won't be going down! Everyone's got questions about what these tariffs are going to mean for their next car buying experience, but this is a bigger question, since nearly every industry in the US uses cars and trucks to move their people and products – and when their costs go up, so do yours. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Is Elon Musk using the missing $1.4B to fund anti-Tesla protests as part of a massive false flag operation that will give him control of both the police and the courts? There's absolutely ZERO evidence to support that idea (plus: I just made it up), but it's 2025 and that means anything goes on today's bats**t episode of Quick Charge! This week the guys try and make some sense of the current political environment in America. Why Tesla is now hated regardless of the product. DOGE is gutting the governement to what end? Privatizing parts of the government is a bad way to go for a number of reasons. Why are we angering our long time allies? MAGA posts are hard to ignore and almost never based in any kind of fact. Watching the President actively going after his political rivals is unreal. The White House press secretary is awful. Foo wants to know what is the first movie made you tear up? Plus more!

In some ways, Elon Musk had a quiet week—if making news on a daily instead of hourly basis counts as quiet. This week on Elon, Inc., the panel— Max Chafkin, Dana Hull and Bloomberg Businessweek columnist Amanda Mull—discusses Mull’s latest story about the wrong turns Musk has taken with the Tesla brand. And while Tesla dealerships and Supercharger stations are increasingly the focus of anti-Musk ire, the panel ponders the future of SpaceX and Starlink, especially as the latter is seeing growth among its competitors.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We also cover Toyota as it moves to position itself for global battery dominance by suppling batteries to more than 400,000 electrified Honda vehicles per year, plus an upgraded Xpeng G6 electric SUV that makes everything on this side of the Pacific look positively plebeian. Shoot us a Text.Today, we're talking about how the White House lawn became a Tesla dealership yesterday. Plus, we're covering Ford's investment into EV charging for its drivers and how Southwest is ending its longstanding free bag policy.President Donald Trump, long an opponent of Joe Biden's EV push, threw a political curveball on Tuesday by inspecting—and even considering purchasing—a Tesla at the White House. The moment was seen as an olive branch to Elon Musk, a vocal supporter of Trump's administration and a key player in the EV industry.Despite campaigning against Biden's EV mandates, Trump praised Tesla's technology and price points at the event. His appearance with Musk comes amid protests and boycotts of Tesla by liberal groups unhappy with Musk's alignment with conservative policies.Tesla's stock, which saw its worst day since 2020 on Monday, rebounded slightly after the event. While admiring Tesla's tech, Trump drew the line at a new model lacking a steering wheel, saying, “I'm going to pass on that.”An eagle-eyed photographer at the event noticed that the President's handwritten notes looked a lot like a sales pitch for Tesla, with phrases like “Teslas can be purchased as low as $299/month or $35K.”Ford has officially delivered over 140K NACS adapters to its EV customers. This move grants Ford EV drivers access to Tesla's vast Supercharger network, marking a major step toward simplifying public charging and expanding infrastructure options. The milestone follows Ford's 2023 announcement to integrate Tesla's Supercharger network into its ecosystem.Ford EVs now have access to over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers—up from 15,300 last year and Ford's BlueOval Charge Network has over 180,000 chargers at over 50,000 locations, making it North America's largest public integrated charging networkIn February, Tesla Superchargers accounted for nearly 20% of Ford EV charging stops.Plus, Ford EV drivers using Apple CarPlay can now plan Tesla Supercharger stops directly in Apple Maps EV Routing, eliminating the need for a separate app.Southwest Airlines is making a major shift, announcing that starting May 28, it will charge for checked bags—ending its long-standing “bags fly free” policy. The change aims to boost profitability but may alienate loyal travelers.Only Rapid Rewards A-list members and business fare passengers will still get free checked bags.CEO Bob Jordan framed the move as part of an effort to attract new customers and improve profitability. Southwest has also announced plans to introduce assigned seating by 2025, revamp its fare structure, and expand its international routes to stay competitive.Southwest previously touted free checked bags as a key reason customers chose the airline.Delta CEO Ed Bastian sees an opening to attract Southwest passengers, saying, "Those customers aHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Jason and Brian dive into a whirlwind of tech chaos, cultural absurdities, and dystopian developments. They kick things off with a nostalgic nod to the internet's past, highlighting the 88x31 GIF collection and quirky single-use websites like "Trump Golf Track" and "Are We Doomed Yet?" The asteroid 2024 YR4 briefly raises existential dread as NASA's odds of a 2032 Earth impact fluctuate wildly, but relief follows as updated calculations show a near-zero chance of collision. Meanwhile, Elon Musk dominates the headlines with his bizarre CPAC appearance brandishing a chainsaw, Tesla's anti-theft dye measures for Supercharger cables, and mounting protests against his political entanglements and government layoffs under DOGE.The episode also covers corporate drama and AI controversies. The New York Times introduces newsroom AI tools amidst its legal battles with OpenAI, while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella urges the industry to temper AI hype. Uber sues DoorDash over alleged anti-competitive practices, and Meta unveils plans for the world's longest undersea cable alongside LlamaCon, its first generative AI conference. Meanwhile, Humane abruptly discontinues its AI Pins following an HP acquisition, leaving users scrambling. The hosts also explore Musk's meddling with X's Community Notes and blocking Signal links, further eroding trust in the platform. On the media front, Jason and Brian discuss upcoming releases like Daredevil: Born Again, The Last of Us Season 2, Apple's Murderbot series, and Judd Apatow's Norm Macdonald documentary. They wrap up with listener feedback, shout-outs to Patreon supporters, and a hilarious anecdote about a Tesla showroom protest featuring an employee's cheeky “We Hate Him Too” sign. Shoot us a Text.Friday is upon us once again, and today we're talking about Rivian's first positive gross profit quarter, Carvana's record quarter, how Tesla is instituting wait queues at Superchargers, and the design of Kia's new PV5 van.Show Notes with links:We could talk about tariff warnings, but we aren't going to. We could talk about the ongoing Nissan saga and Moodys downgrading their stock to ‘junk status' but we're not going to. Instead…we're going to talk about…Rivian hit a major milestone, achieving its first-ever positive gross profit of $170M in Q4 2024, a $776M improvement from the previous year.Total revenue hit $1.73B, above expectations of $1.4B.Rivian cut per-vehicle costs by $31,000 year-over-year, helping it turn the corner.Despite this, the company still posted a $743M net loss for the quarter.Meanwhile, Carvana swung to a record $159M net income in Q4They sold 114,379 used vehicles in Q4, a 50% increase year over year.Full-year revenue hit $13.7B, with a record $1.4B adjusted EBITDA.Stock dropped 12% after-hours due to concerns over softening per-vehicle margins.CEO Ernie Garcia “In 2024, Carvana became the most profitable public automotive retailer in U.S. history as measured by adjusted EBITDA margin while also resuming industry-leading growth,”Tesla's Supercharger network is the best in the game, but with increased usage from both Tesla and non-Tesla EVs, long wait times have become a problem. After a viral altercation at a Supercharger, Tesla is finally launching a virtual queue system in Q2.Tesla will roll out the queue at select Superchargers nationwide, aiming to improve the experience for the ~1% of users who experience wait times. The viral video shows two Tesla owners arguing over a charging spot, highlighting the need for a structured waiting system.Tesla has not provided details on how the queue system will work, but a broader rollout is expected later this year if feedback is positive. The company continues to expand its Supercharger network by over 20% annually to meet growing demand.Tesla in a statement said, “Goal is a net customer experience improvement,”Kia has revealed the exterior design of its PV5, the first EV under its "Platform Before Vehicle" (PBV) brand. Designed to compete with electric vans like the VW ID Buzz and Ford E-Transit, the PV5 offers a modular design for cargo, rideshare, and even #vanlife. The PBV system allows the van to transform between different body types while keeping the driver cab fixed.Uber has already signed an agreement to add the PV5 to its fleet as part of its all-electric push by 2040.While Kia has not shared powertrain, range, or pricing details, more information will be revealed at Kia EV Day in Spain later this month.“With PBV, we are redefining mobility—one platform, endless possibilities,”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
