Way back in September 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk planted the idea of a “compelling” $25,000 electric vehicle. The promise came as the company worked to reduce the cost and boost the range for its EV batteries. That attractive price point has been a lingering idea for Tesla in the years since Musk threw out the figure during a “Battery Day” event. But this week, during the company's third quarter earnings call, Musk called a regular $25,000 Tesla model “pointless” and “silly.”“Like, it'll be completely at odds with what we believe,” he told investors.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

TESLA'S ROADMAP TO A RENEWABLE ENERGY ECONOMY: INSIGHTS FROM INVESTOR DAY Tesla's recent Investor Day and Battery Day presentations highlighted the company's commitment to transitioning the world to a sustainable energy economy. The expanded Master Plan 3 aims to create a renewable energy economy using storage, renewable power, and manufacturing expense. Tesla estimates that achieving this goal will require 240 TWh of storage, 30 TW of new solar/wind, and about $10T. Elon Musk outlined an ambitious plan for global decarbonization, emphasizing the role that batteries and electric vehicles can play in making this transition possible. Tesla's next-generation vehicles and radically reinvented assembly process were also showcased, positioning the company well in the race for electrification. In terms of reducing the cost of producing electric vehicles, Tesla plans to produce its own batteries and reduce the cost by as much as 56 percent. The company's new battery design, which incorporates a tabless electrode, will increase energy density by up to 5 times and reduce the cost of manufacturing by up to 14 percent. Tesla is also working on electrifying high-temperature industrial processes and reducing the total cost of ownership of electric vehicles. The company aims to reduce the cost of its next-gen vehicle by 50 percent compared to the Model 3. Overall, Tesla's presentations demonstrated the company's commitment to driving innovation and cost reduction to make sustainable energy and electric vehicles more accessible to consumers. The focus on reducing costs throughout the supply chain and improving end-use efficiency will enable exponential growth in volume, making a sustainable energy economy within reach.

Welcome to February 18th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the ancient origins of batteries and wine. Have you ever noticed that smoke alarm batteries go dead in the middle of the night? This happens because batteries slow down when it's cold, setting off that annoying sound. As convenient as they are, batteries are far from perfect. But there are reasons to celebrate these portable power sources by seeing just how far they have come! A two thousand year old battery was discovered in a Baghdad museum. This ancient wonder combined a ceramic pot, a copper coil and a rod of iron. Great minds are still making improvements and today smart batteries are even able to detect when they need changing. Maybe in the future they can wake themselves up in the middle of the night so you can spend National Battery Day recharging yourself!   People have enjoyed alcohol throughout history. But its discovery was likely a happy accident. Fermentation occurs naturally with grapes because yeast is on their skin. Because this happened without having to do anything to the crushed fruit, ancient people viewed the process as something magical, created by the gods. Fermentation occurred with grain and other fruits, but folks found that it worked best with grapes. Once they understood the fermentation process, winemaking became more elaborate and created a tradition that continues to this day. Oenophiles rejoice! It's National Drink Wine Day. To deliver Model Y and Model 3, the company dispatched three cargo ships from China. So far, two of the three have already reached the shores of Europe and docked at ports in several countries to deliver the long-awaited vehicles to consumers. Vessel Helios Ray with the first Model Ys for the European market arrived at the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on August 15, later it headed to Emden, Germany, and now it is in Bremerhaven, Germany. According to Tesla ship tracker @mortenlund89/Twitter, a number of Model Ys were unloaded in Zeebrugge to be transported to Norway in another vessel. - Glovis Supreme arrived at the port of Zeebrugge, into which the Model Y from Helios Rayl is supposed to have been loaded. After this, according to @mortenlund89, there were 1,300 Model Ys aboard the Glovis Supreme, which was delivered to Norway on August 20. The first shipment has arrived at the port of Oslo and over a thousand happy customers will soon take delivery of the long-awaited Model Y. It's now expecting to do the same with the rest of the Bolt EV population, including models recently delivered and those in dealer inventories. - The Bolt EV and EUV models use cells made by LG Chem in South Korea through mid 2019, and then Holland, Michigan from mid-2019 on. GM had previously said that the so-called “design level N2.1” made in Michigan were unaffected - GM now recommends that until customers receive new battery modules, they should set their vehicle to a maximum 90 percent state of charge, charge their vehicle more frequently and not allow it below 70 miles of range, and park the vehicle outside immediately after charging. - GM could potentially be replacing all the battery modules—or full packs, as it may turn out—in more than 140,000 Bolt EVs in North America, of which more than 110,000 are in the U.S. - The expanded recall would cost the company $1 billion more than what had been spent on previous Bolt recall efforts, and it stated today that it will seek reimbursement from LG Chem, the cell supplier. These generators are used for longer periods than the propulsion systems but operate at lower power, which makes it easier to replace them with battery-operated versions, - The company is aiming to replace 15,000 combustion engine generators on boats and RVs with electric-powered versions by 2023. - Consumers typically don't spend as much on fuel for their boats as they do for their cars, which complicates the cost-benefit analysis of going electric - The primary market for electric boats today is smaller lakes and waterways where the distance requirements are limited and speeds are lower. Most of the interest comes from Europe where certain municipalities that are highly dependent on boat traffic - The market is even more niche in the U.S.; one of the more popular applications is electric dinghies that ferry the well-heeled from the dock to their parked yachts - about 90% of electric models being sold today operate below 10 horsepower. BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler also signaled a change in delivery expectations due to the shortage. Earlier in the year, BMW said it had ordered enough semiconductors and expected its suppliers to deliver, but in a recent statement, the Bavarians said that supply would remain tight in the second half of the year. The lost output was around 30,000 units so far this year. - Toyota will cut production worldwide 40 percent in September. That translates into 80,000 fewer models produced next month than originally planned. The production cuts will affect Europe, China, United States and other markets. In the U.S., just this month alone, Toyota will deliver 60,000 to 90,000 vehicles fewer than originally planned. - The latest production issues follow news that German chipmaker Infineon was forced to suspend production at one of its plants in Malaysia in June, due to a coronavirus outbreak. A large portion of the worldwide chip production is located in Malaysia - Most analysts point to a return to normality sometimes in 2022 Original Source : https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/08/19/chip-shortages-may-be-getting-worse-for-automakers BATTERY POWER CAPACITY IN THE US GREW BIG TIME IN 2020 - Power capacity — a measure of how much power a battery can instantly discharge — for large-scale batteries grew at an unprecedented pace in the US last year, according to an annual report released this week by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). - 2020 smashed the previous record set in 2018 for the biggest growth in power capacity in the US with 489MW of large-scale battery storage added. That's more than twice what was added in 2018. - Big batteries can also step in when a disaster knocks another power source offline. So on top of cutting down greenhouse gas emissions, they can make the grid more reliable and resilient. - Electricity is currently responsible for a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. But a clean grid could tackle emissions from other sectors like transportation and heating as cars, homes, and buildings go all-electric. - Battery storage costs have tumbled 72 percent since 2015, the EIA found, which helps explain why the vast majority of large-scale battery storage power capacity available today only came online within the past six years. Comments about the Hardware 4 computer were made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk during AI Day, which featured an in-depth discussion on the company's AI-driven initiatives. - Musk remarked that a HW 4.0 or FSD Computer 2 would be introduced in the future. This unit would be a step up from the already impressive HW 3.0 both in performance and safety. - HW 4.0 will be introduced in the Tesla Cybertruck “in a year or so.” Musk later noted that with Hardware 3.0, Tesla's self-driving systems could perform about 300% safer than a human, but for HW 4.0, this number could increase to 1000%. Among these tests was a fundamental and indispensable part, the winter test. This included a systemic and complete collection of dynamic tests on all types of low-adhesion roads to ensure a safe and comfortable driving experience for users in different scenarios. The summer season in China did not provide the environment and low temperatures the test required. However, New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere allowed NIO to complete the test promptly. - In July 2021, NIO spent a month testing the NIO ET7 in winter conditions. The renowned Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds (SHPG) of New Zealand, with about 4.9 million m2, boasts 37 snow flats, ice flats, and handling tracks. Situated in the piedmont area adjacent to the Cardrona Valley near Queenstown, a complex mountainous landscape simulated various test environments close to everyday vehicle-use scenarios. - The entry level 70kWh unit offers a 310-mile (500 km) range, with a 100kWh version offering 435 miles (700 km). The top model with a ginormous 150kWh battery pack has a claimed range of more than 621 miles (1,000 km). All the figures are calculated using the Chinese NEDC system. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA TAPS TINY STARTUP’S TECH TO BUILD CHEAPER, CLEANER BATTERIES - Two weeks before Battery Day, Tesla purchased a number of patent applications from Springpower International, a small company based just outside Toronto, for a grand total of $3, according to public records.   - Buying the patent application means that when the patent itself was finally granted in January, it was issued to Tesla, with no mention of Springpower.   - Manufacturing cathodes for electric vehicle batteries traditionally generates large quantities of contaminated water — up to 4,000 gallons containing ammonia, metal particles and toxic chemicals for every ton of cathode material produced. Springpower’s process cleverly recirculates the chemical solution, removing the need for expensive water treatment.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/XZtxS/ Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/04/tesla-taps-tiny-startups-tech-to-build-cheaper-cleaner-batteries/   TESLA USES SPRINGPOWER INTERNATIONAL TECH   - Thus, the purchase of patents, the description of Springpower technologies for the production of Tesla 4680 batteries, and several other factors indicate that the two companies have close cooperation, and perhaps hint at something more, such as an acquisition. For example, Springpower CEO Michael Wang has consistently interacted with posts by Tesla employees on LinkedIn, which may hint at a close and warm relationship.   - it is likely that Tesla has acquired a tiny startup whose technology was considered by others to be too far from commercialization. The symbiosis between Springpower and the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the world will definitely bear very juicy fruit in the form of critical savings in battery production.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/2KIGW/ Original Source : https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-uses-springpower-international-technology-to-produce-batteries-economically-and-environmentally   Amrit Bhogan | LinkedIn Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/CrN0y/ Original Source : https://www.linkedin.com/in/amrit-bhogan-b395a1140/     Yang Liu | LinkedIn Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/lki9B/ Original Source : https://www.linkedin.com/in/yang-liu-8b50a9a2/     MG ROOF RAILS SAGA ENDS AFTER 7 MONTHS - After initially marketing the all-electric MG5 EV as having a roof carry capacity of 50kg, then backtracking and telling owners not to put anything on the roof, MG should soon be able to confirm that owners can actually add 35kg of luggage to the car’s roof rails. Seven months after the car first went on sale.   - it came to MG’s attention that key testing had not been done and therefore it could not confirm how much load can be carried on the car’s roof.   - The latest development is that the roof capacity should soon be confirmed as 35kg, once final signoff has been received from the UK vehicle standards body, the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), following a long series of tests.   - MG told us a validation testing procedure was missed due to human error, and the company has since amended its processes to prevent it recurring. Similarly, the original stated capacity of 50kg was also a result of human error.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/rdZLr/ Original Source : https://www.which.co.uk/news/2021/05/7-months-after-going-on-sale-mg-can-finally-say-whether-owners-of-its-electric-car-can-use-the-roof-rails/       FORD MUSTANG MACH-E PRODUCTION NUMBERS (1) Matthias Schmidt on Twitter: "20,960 all-electric Ford Mach-E manufactured during the first third of 2021 according to Ford data. That explains why US sales are trailing off a bit. Ford still has only so much production capacity, and it is starting to spread it more widely. While little-known as a name outside its industry, it supplies many of the world's major electric-car brands. Known in short as CATL, the company makes batteries for Tesla (TSLA) vehicles at the carmaker's new factory in Shanghai, as well as supplying BMW (BMWYY), Volkswagen (VLKAF) , Toyota Motor (TM) , Honda Motor (HMC) and the Chinese owner of the Volvo and Lotus brands, Geely Automobile Holding (GELYF) .   - Zeng owns around 25% of CATL, so his fortune has risen as fast as the battery maker's shares, tripling since early 2020. By Forbes calculations, there are 9 billionaires on their rich list that owe their wealth to their holdings in CATL. The commission’s ruling in favor of LG had threatened SK with a ban on supplying batteries in the country and put its facility under construction in Georgia at risk. The plant, which is still under construction, will supply batteries for electric vehicles for Ford and Volkswagen, and with the settlement agreement, SK is now also free to seek business from other companies."   "Their compromise will allow SK to complete the construction of the $2.6 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Georgia, which will supply electric vehicle batteries for Ford and Volkswagen. SK earlier said it could shut down the Georgia plant if the import ban is not overturned, which could hamper the Biden administration’s EV push and pledge for American jobs" reported Korea Bizwire: "LG, which supplies Tesla and a number of automakers, is the world’s No. 2 EV battery supplier with a share of 23.5 percent, and SK Innovation was in sixth place with a 6 percent share in the global EV market last year, according to SNE Research. The Seoul government welcomed their agreement and vowed to expand support to make the nation a battery power house."   https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/11/business/dealbook/battery-dispute-electric-vehicles.html   http://koreabizwire.com/lg-sk-reach-last-minute-settlement-in-itc-battery-dispute/186988   FREIGHTLINER OPENS ORDER BOOKS FOR ECASCADIA AND EM2 EV TRUCKS "Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has announced that its two very first all-electric trucks - the Freightliner eCascadia and Freightliner eM2 - are now available for order. The decision to start sales comes after a few years since the reveal of the proof of concept in 2018." according to InsideEVs: " During that time, the company has launched and gradually expanded its pilot fleet of 38 electric vehicles that collectively covered nearly 750,000 miles (1.2 million km) in customer hands in North America. The eCascadia and eM2 prototypes were tested in a variety of applications, including drayage, regional and local pickup and delivery, and food and beverage delivery. The Detroit ePowertrain offers three battery options:   210 kWh: charging in 1.5 to 4 hours 315 kWh: charging in 2 to 6 hours 475 kWh: charging in 2 to 6 hours"   https://insideevs.com/news/500134/freightliner-opens-orders-ecascadia-em2/   FRANCE TO OFFER GRANTS FOR ELECTRIC BIKES "France will offer the owners of old internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles a grant of €2,500 ($AU4,000) if they hand over their vehicles for scrap and buy an electric bicycle, according to Reuters. Reporting on Monday, Reuters said that French lawmakers in the National Assembly approved over the weekend an amendment to the country’s ‘Fight against climate change’ bill currently passing through the French Parliament." says thedriven.io: "The bill, which aims to set a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 40% by 2030 based on 1990 levels, will unsurprisingly include a raft of minor legislative goals to reach the country’s ambitious greenhouse reduction target. Included amongst these legislative targets is a plan to offer a €2,500 grant to buy an electric bicycle, in exchange for the scrapping of an old ICE vehicle."   https://thedriven.io/2021/04/12/france-to-offer-grants-for-electric-bikes-in-cash-for-car-clunkers-program/   NEWMOTION'S CHARGING NETWORK JOINS ELECTRIC JUICE NETWORK Octopus Energy and NewMotion, a leading European smart EV charging solutions provider, have agreed that customers of the Electric Juice Network (EJN) can now use the public charge points of NewMotion. NewMotion, a Shell group company, has thousands of charge points in the public charging network in Europe and the UK, including a growing amount of rapid charging at Shell Recharge. Drivers of electric vehicles will now be able to pay with their Octopus Energy account across the participating charging networks, with all costs appearing on a single bill.     PANASONIC SEES BIGGER CELLS AS KEY TO AFFORDABLE EVS "In a rare interview, Panasonic's EV battery boss provided a glimpse of the company's response to the larger battery cells promoted by client Tesla. Speaking to Bloomberg, Yasuaki Takamoto said bigger cells are the key to affordable electric cars, but indicated he's not convinced by Tesla's proposed cell format." says Green Car reports: " Tesla presented its 4680-format cylindrical cell as its future during its Battery Day last year, but it hadn't then produced any significant volume of them. Musk presented it as potentially halving cell cost over time. VW kwam met Power Day. En daarin werden hun plannen voor zes elektrische autofabrieken tot en met 2030 ontvouwd. Ze gaan bovendien flink investeren in Europese laadstations. In een vrij kapitalistisch systeem kunnen goede ideeën snel gekopieerd worden. Allemaal ontwikkelingen waar u als consument beter van wordt. In de afgelopen verkiezingsstrijd heb ik sommige partijen horen praten over de negatieve kanten van het kapitalisme. Deze technologische race laat u de andere kant van de medaille zien. Bob Morris is a battery metals expert who worked for industry heavyweights Umicore, INCO and Vale for many years before starting his own consulting company. Few people have the depth of the battery supply chain experience that Bob has. Although we dealt with many of the same customers and both spent time as expats in China and Japan, we never crossed paths until we were introduced recently by Dan Blondal, CEO of Nano One. In this episode Bob shares the basics of industry dynamics for both nickel and cobalt. We discuss why expectations for the growth of high nickel cathode were unrealistic - noting that demand estimates from industry pundits without significant experience often are. We also review why cobalt is likely to have a place in the battery world for a very long time despite the desire of many to minimize use of the metal. As the development of 811 NMC continues to fall short of expectations, we examine the reasons why 532 and 622 NMC are still viable. We move on to the resurgence of LFP and the ramifications that may have for lithium supply. Bob provides his thoughts on Tesla's Battery Day, range anxiety, and why every cathode will continue to have a place in the market for the foreseeable future. We close by discussing the future of recycling and why Northvolt's 2030 ambitions for using recycled battery materials are unrealistic.

Tesla has announced that Battery Day 2020 will happen September 22, and rumors of a "million mile battery" have dominated headlines. But what exactly does a"million mile" battery mean? The Minerals Manhattan Project catches up with Sam Jaffe, Managing Partner of Cairn ERA to understand what Tesla's announcements mean for the battery industry.Tesla's announcements matter for the entire battery ecosystem, who will be judged against where Tesla is. Sam breaks down what $ per kwh means as a metric for battery costs, and why the magic US $100/kwh as a parity point with ICE vehicles is an oversimplification. We discuss vertical integration vs. specialization, with Sam predicting that EV companies will not become fully integrated battery makers.Sam shares what he sees as the most important technology developments within the battery (thicker electrodes), and what pack design is doing to improve energy density (cell-to-pack). We get into cathode chemistries and costs of raw materials, including the LFP vs high nickel debate. If you want more Sam, you can follow him on twitter or check out his website:@SamJaffe
