What causes people to forsake their country and take arms against it? What prompts their neighbors, hardly distinguishable in station or success, to defend that country against the rebels? That is the question H. W. Brands answers in his powerful new history of the American Revolution. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were the unlikeliest of rebels. Washington in the 1770s stood at the apex of Virginia society. Franklin was more successful still, having risen from humble origins to world fame. John Adams might have seemed a more obvious candidate for rebellion, being of cantankerous temperament. Even so, he revered the law. Yet all three men became rebels against the British Empire that fostered their success. Others in the same circle of family and friends chose differently. William Franklin might have been expected to join his father, Benjamin, in rebellion but remained loyal to the British. So did Thomas Hutchinson, a royal governor and friend of the Franklins, and Joseph Galloway, an early challenger to the Crown. They soon heard themselves denounced as traitors--for not having betrayed the country where they grew up. Native Americans and the enslaved were also forced to choose sides as civil war broke out around them. After the Revolution, the Patriots were cast as heroes and founding fathers while the Loyalists were relegated to bit parts best forgotten. Our First Civil War reminds us that before America could win its revolution against Britain, the Patriots had to win a bitter civil war against family, neighbors, and friends.HOST:  Rob MellonFEATURED BREW:  Washington's Porter, Yards Brewing Company, Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaBOOK:  Our First Civil War: Patriots and Loyalists in the American Revolutionhttps://www.amazon.com/Our-First-Civil-War-Revolution/dp/0385546513/ref=sr_1_1?crid=14MCBU3L483L9&keywords=our+first+civil+war+hw+brands&qid=1649163061&sprefix=our+first+civil+%2Caps%2C120&sr=8-1MUSIC:  Bones Forkhttps://bonesfork.com/

The crossover pod you’ve been waiting for! This week, Mike Gilligan and Oliver Martel from “Small State Big Takes” join us for our first ever collab show. In the true spirit of collaboration, we start this week’s show as the SSBT guys do every week: with our “big take” of the day. The takes were big, controversial, and raunchy…ranging from Damian Lillard to how you like to eat your muffin. BEERS: We start as we always do: searching for the best craft beer on the planet. Will and Jake return to their Tree House roots and review two classics: Moment of Clarity and Curiosity Fifty Seven. Gilli, who just moved to Philly (yes, we know it rhymes) stops at a Pennsylvania classic, Yards Brewing Company, to review Philadelphia Pale Ale. Oliver keeps it simple with a classic Blue Moon. BUSINESS: The rage over non-fungible tokens, or NFT’s, has grown significantly in the last few weeks. Second-to-none is NBA Top Shot, the nation’s hottest marketplace to own “moments” from all sorts of basketball players. Will these NFT marketplaces replace the thrill and wonder of a good-ole-fashioned pack of trading cards? What’s next for digital memorabilia? The guys also react to the news that Mark Cuban will allow Mavericks fans to pay for tickets and fan gear in Dogecoin, a viral cryptocurrency that’s gained significant exposure. Is it a pure publicity stunt or secretly genius? BALLS: Our inaugural Pod vs. Pod Conference Pick ‘Em Challenge is on! Both podcasts will pick the winners of seven conference tournaments. We’ll compete for bragging rights, switching our Twitter profile pics for 24 hours, and a small donation to the opposing podcast’s charity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/beersbusinessandballs/support

Craft Brew News – 6/21/19(courtesy of Brewbound.com)Texas Governor to Sign Beer-to-Go into LawTexas Gov. Greg Abbott will officially make beer-to-go sales at the state’s manufacturing breweries legal during a June 15 signing ceremony at Austin Beerworks.Abbott’s signature will allow consumers to purchase up to one case of beer (288 fl. oz.) per day from the state’s manufacturing breweries, starting September 1, 2019. Those sales would count against a 5,000-barrel cap that is already in place for on-premise taproom sales at those breweries. His signature will also ensure operations of the state’s alcohol regulatory body, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), will continue.Yards Brewing Begins Offering Contract Brewing ServicesPhiladelphia’s Yards Brewing Company is now offering contract brewing services to fill about 60,000 barrels of excess capacity.Yards, which opened a 70,000 sq. ft. production facility and taproom in November 2017, has about 100,000 barrels of annual capacity. Last year, Yards’ production declined 2 percent, to 40,296 barrels, according to data from the Brewers Association.Yards said its first client is New Jersey’s Cape May Brewing Company, according to a press release on the Brewers of PA website. The company is seeking additional partners.US House Committee Expected to Extend Federal Excise Tax Relief for BrewersAn effort to maintain reduced federal excise taxes (FET) on all brewers an importers could take a major step forward. The House Ways and Means Committee is expected to extend tax cuts for alcohol producers and importers as part of the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019 (H.R. 3301) extender bill.Although the committee’s version of tax relief would only extend through the end of 2020, alcohol industry trade groups say they plan to continue efforts to make the tax cuts permanent. The extender would keep in place through December 31, 2020, an excise tax rate of $3.50 per barrel (a reduction from $7 per barrel) on the first 60,000 barrels for domestic brewers producing fewer than 2 million barrels annually. The legislation also sets the federal excise tax to $16 per barrel on the first 6 million barrels for all other brewers and beer importers, while maintaining the $18 per barrel excise tax for brewers producing more than 6 million barrels. The Brewers Association, the Colorado-based trade group supporting over 7,000 small and independent breweries, also supports the bill also plans to continue working alongside the BI to advance the legislation.Cannabiniers on Verge of Next Brewery AcquisitionLighthouse Strategies — the company behind Cannabiniers and the Two Roots line of CBD- and THC-infused non-alcoholic craft beers – is closing in on its next brewery acquisition.CEO and chairman Michael Hayford said the company could finalize the purchase of a craft beer company in the Great Lakes region of the U.S. before the end of June.According to Hayford, who discussed his company’s strategy and outlook on the cannabis space at BevNET’s Cannabis Forum last week in New York City, the forthcoming acquisition will aid Lighthouse’s expansion into the Canadian cannabis market when drinkable products are permitted for sale later this year.Though he declined to name the company, or discuss financial terms of the potential deal, Hayford said the brewing facility is capable of producing between 60,000 and 100,000 barrels of beer annually. In the meantime, Hayford confirmed that Lighthouse has been working with San Diego’s Green Flash Brewing Company for contract beer production. Under the terms of that arrangement, Cannabiniers has access to 50,000 barrels of production capacity annually.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery?
