Eric Newman speaks with Lauren Groff about her latest story collection, "Brawler," an intimate and tender exploration of the all-too-human struggle to balance a life between compassion and hatred, love and vengeance. Groff shares her approach to writing stories, from the inception of a gossamer idea or mood through to the editorial grunt work of arranging and sharpening characters and sentences, all while trying to let the work emerge organically. Groff also discusses Flannery O'Connor, the possibility of redemption, the importance of avoiding a moral judgment on your characters, and how she tries to balance the lightness and darkness of life on the page.Ā

This week are talking about Akudama Drive and honestly for us it was not that great of a show. It was not horrible but it also was not great. This anime follows a group of criminals that all literally named after what their crime or specialty is, like Courier, Brawler, Doctor, Hacker. Each character has a unique design and video game-like feel which is not to surprising since one of the creators worked for a game company. But one of the major downsides for us aside from the pacing was how predictable everything was. We also dig into the weird pacing issues, the over-the-top gore that felt gratuitous with the amount of censorship there was as well. Basically it was watchable but forgettable, especially if you're hoping for something engaging.Next Week's Pick: "By The Grace Of Gods Season 2"Have you had the chance to watch Akudama Drive or any of our previous selections? Beat em up Breakdowns: Mayhem Brawler
The Trickster as 47th President by Chris AbrahamDonald Trump was always easy to sneer at. He was a tabloid punchline long before he was the gold-plated game show boss my mother adored. The Apprentice was her favorite. I rolled my eyes. He was tacky, vulgar ā a human golden toilet. We told ourselves he'd never be more than that. Yet here we are: he's the 47th President of the United States. The only non-consecutive two-termer since Grover Cleveland. But Cleveland never danced to the Village People's YMCA more often than the cover bands. Trump does it at every rally. He does the stiff-hipped monkey dance, gives you the same punchlines, the same nicknames, the same red meat, and when the haters turn it into an obscene meme ā he grins and does it again. Most presidents beg you to respect them. They want the hush when they walk in. They correct you if you use the wrong honorific. They bristle when mocked. Hillary carried her rĆ©sumĆ© like a holy relic: āRespect me, I've earned this.ā Biden snaps āCome on, man!ā every time the mask slips. Obama, the professorial jazzman, stayed cool until the press poked too deep. Bush Sr. was so polite he looked weak next to Bubba's sax. Nixon taped his own paranoia. Carter lectured the country into a mood swing. Ford fell, Chevy Chase made him fall forever. But Trump? He lives for your laughter. He wants the jeers. He wants you to call him Donnie, DJT, a clown ā because then you're in the tent. He's the trickster who cannot be shamed. He turns every insult into merch. Every meme is another ticket sold. This is the piece the Beltway never got. They think ādangerous demagogueā means barbed wire camps and midnight helicopters. But America doesn't do Pinochet. Trump's coup was the vacuum: the working middle he stole while the party of labor became the party of brunch. The union dads who went from FDR to Lock Her Up. The old Dixiecrats who realized they'd rather be insulted by a clown than scolded by the class valedictorian. He didn't bring tanks ā he brought the carnival. They call him a āwannabe dictatorā because he never quite becomes one. Four years in office, and no mass roundups. Now he's back ā pushing 80 ā constitutionally capped at one final term. They insist the sequel will be the real nightmare. But here he stands, arms wide, the same routine, the same golden hat. The same monkey dance. If he were truly the next Mussolini, he's the worst at it in modern history.People want a trickster who won't flinch. The whole country is a hazing ritual: your tribe tests if you can be mocked, if you crumble. The presidents who survive know how to laugh it off. The ones who can't ā they fade. Trump is the bar comic who never breaks under hecklers. He keeps selling you the same show. He knows the final trick is mortal ā the lights go out in 3.5 years. But until then, the moral is the same:Never underestimate the man who never asks you to respect him. In America, that's the oldest magic trick there is.

The Last Retro Rewind for January. Ā This one from 2009 whenKid drags Wally and JMac back for the 600th fucking episode of the Goin' Deep Show. We dive into the art of sending tittie and pussy pics, drool over pregnant chicks, recap Kleen's pathetic attempt to seduce The Brawler, and suffer through JMac's singing. Go Deep, assholes.Ā Released January 2009 On Mic: Kid, Wally, JMac
Retro Rewind Week Continues: Strap in, motherfuckers, because we're diving back into more filth from The Goin' Deep Show from January 2, 2009. Episode 583 is back, and it's more offensive than a priest at a boy scout camp. The crew, consisting of Kid, GDub, The MAP, Sleeze, and the noob Byrno, decided to drag in the Brawler for a session of drunken debauchery that would make Satan blush. Here's what went down: GDub's Strep Throat 'Cure': This jackass claims he can cure strep throat with his dick. Yeah, because what the world needs is more medical advice from drunks with hard-ons. Brawler's Humiliation Hour: They bombard her with questions about her asshole, tits, and how much she enjoys getting "oopsed" in the ass. Classy, right? Titty Obsession: Byrno's chick's tits get more airtime than the fucking news. They talk about them like they're the eighth wonder of the world, with enough detail to make you want to vomit or jerk off, depending on your standards. Alcohol-Fueled Insanity: From GDub spilling his drink to discussing the finer points of licking assholes, this episode is a testament to how low humans can go when they're shit-faced. If you're easily triggered, this isn't your episode. It's a fucking minefield of vulgarity, where every sentence is a potential hate crime against decency.
