If there's one person in the local music scene who is a Rock Star, it's Akron's own Jeff Hardy. None other than critic Chuck Klosterman has compared him to Marc Bolan. ‘Nuff said! He's known for numerous bands, including CD Truth, Zero Defex, and, of course, the World's Greatest Christmas Band, Missile Toe.   In this episode, Nick and Bob talk with Jeff about his early years, his many bands, future projects, the struggles and fun of the Rock Life - and you won't be surprised - it's a lot of fun.  Don't miss this one! Listen this Thursday, May 2, at 10 pm on The Summit FM, 91.3, or later anytime on Apple, Spotify, Google, Podbean, SoundCloud, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts! (Thanks to Brad Savage)

Brad Warner was born in Ohio in 1964. In 1983 he met Zen teacher Tim McCarthy and began his study of Zen while he was still the bass player of the hardcore punk band Zero Defex, whose big hit was the eighteen-second masterpiece "Drop the A-Bomb on Me!" In the 1980s he released five albums of psychedelic rock under the band name Dimentia 13 (that's the way he spelled it), though Dimentia 13 was often a one-man band with Brad playing all the instruments. In 1993 he moved to Japan, where he landed a job with Tsuburaya Productions, the company founded by Eiji Tsuburaya, the man who created Godzilla. The following year Brad met Gudo Nishijima Roshi, who ordained him as a Zen monk and made him his dharma heir in 2000. He has written several books and just released a new one titled "The Other Side of Nothing: The Zen Ethics of Time, Space, and Being ". Brad Warner and Free Your Inner Guru host Laura Tucker talk about Letters to a Dead Friend About Zen and the dangers of pushing for a spiritual breakthrough before you are ready. Brad Warner is a Soto Zen priest, bass guitarist for the punk band Zero Defex and the author of Letters to a Dead Friend About Zen. In his most recent book, Brad Warner introduces us to Zen Buddhism through the perspective of letters he writes to his friend Marky, who has died of cancer. But he’s not just talking to Marky, he’s talking to you in the frank tone and language of telling it like it is, to a close friend on borrowed time. First, I loved this book and highly recommend it.  Second, I've been saving this interview for just the right time. We recorded this interview three days after I sat for my interview for the just-released Guru: The Dark Side of Enlightenment podcast by Wondery. After speaking about Zen Buddhism and Letters to a Dead Friend About Zen, Brad and I get going about some of the issues in the spirituality and self help circles that have become important to me based on lived experience.   It was reassuring to speak to a spiritual leader about why all things don't work for all people, and the dangers of inducing altered states in the pursuit of spiritual growth. Enjoy this big conversation with someone who doesn't shy away from going counter to the status quo. Conversation highlights: Why Brad started writing letters to his dead friend Marky. How Brad became a Zen monk, without setting off to be a monk. Is Zen Buddhism a religion, or a lifestyle? Sitting Zazen without a goal to be mindful or a better person. Re-thinking detachment: The Sanskrit word that’s usually translated as attachment has a double meaning of fuel. Laura on how meditation is like running: Even my worst run was better than the run I didn’t take. Brad on how Zen practice is like playing music, especially in front of a group. The dark side of meditation and the pitfalls that can happen when you extract mindfulness from the ethics and culture surrounding it. The down side of using drugs and altered states to push for spiritual experiences.   Mentioned in this episode: Book - Letters to a Dead Friend About Zen Brad's Blog - hardcorezen.info Hardcore Zen Youtube Channel Want to have big conversations in your life? We have a quite enlightening episode today, with Brad Warner as our guest. Brad grew up in Ohio, but also spent a significant amount of his life in Kenya and Japan. He got into Zen whilst being the bass guitarist for punk rock band Zero Defex, he is also a blogger, and the author of Sex, Sin, and Zen.   Sex, Sin, and Zen is probably one of my favorite books out there and has made me realize how I relate to Zen Buddhism and the similarities of its teachings to basic principles I live by. In this episode, we talk about Zen Buddhism, its teachings, meditation, and how Zen Buddhism views some of the most controversial subjects of our time.   Clear your mind, get grounded and tune into our conversation as we discuss: How Brad views the correlation of punk rock and Zen Buddhism, and its similarities in terms of questioning realities (3:09). What are the forms of Buddhism, and what is Zen Buddhism (4:43)? How Brad ended up writing about sex, Buddhism's interpretation of sex and sexuality, its background, the percept that Buddha used as a guide on this subject (8:06, 18:26; 19:57); and its rules for lay people (20:54, 24:11). How meditating can make it easier for an individual to reflect on their behavior and if one is going wrong (14:10). The Four Noble Truths, dealing with desires, and how Brad interprets these based on his teacher's wisdom (16:43). The Buddhist stand on homosexuality and an anecdote on how it was misinterpreted a few years ago (21:34). The Bodhisattva vows and his understanding of it (28:00). How Buddhism views porn (31:06), and an analogy he made about porn to vegetarianism (34:49). Buddhism's perception of abortion, where we're introduced to Jizo (36:12), and of prostitution, where we will be introduced to Ikkyu (41:02). The concept of attachment and how this leads to pain and suffering (43:35). How non-attachment may seem like complacency, the truth about the concept of acceptance (46:51), and how to fight for something while still practicing compassion (49:16). A Zazen meditation crash-course (51:30). If you want to reach Brad Warner, go to www.modernsextalks.com/sexsinzen for his info in the show notes.

We also discuss Dōgen's great work The Shōbōgenzō, Brad's life story, a brief history of Zen, and philosophical topics such as the notions of "no self", "not knowing", and the question of why we need to practice, if as the Buddha says, "We are all perfect just as we are."About: Brad Warner is an ordained Zen teacher and author of the books There Is No God And He Is Always With You (2013), Sex Sin and Zen (2010), Zen Wrapped in Karma Dipped in Chocolate (2009), Sit Down and Shut Up (2007) and Hardcore Zen (2004).
